Do It

February 19th, 2021

Bucs OLB Shaq Barrett.

Willie McGinest knows what it is like to win rings.

He also knows what it takes from the defensive side of the ball to win rings: a pass rush. So the NFL Network talking head, and former teammate of park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, trophy-throwing Bucs Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady, believes the Bucs have one main priority in the next few weeks.

Re-sign sack king Shaq Barrett.

McGinest, speaking on “NFL Total Access,” seen weeknights on NFL Network, doesn’t believe the idea of re-signing Shaq takes 10 seconds of thought.

You have a proven player, a proven playoff beast who wants to stay in Tampa. So, McGinest says to the shot-callers at One Buc Palace, make it happen.

You can see McGinest’s take in the NFL Network video below.

no problem signing Shaq, but not for crazy money or more than 3 yrish

  2. August 1976 Buc Says:

Have Shaq signed less than 1 minute in free agency. And work out everthing from there. GO BUCS!!!

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Hate to lose Godwin but must keep Shaq……can’t have both.

    I’m thinking 3 years $45 mil…….

Give Lavonte a longer term deal than most teams would offer……for less $$$…

With the loss of Godwin….try to pick up AB on a team-friendly deal…Gronk the same…..

May not be able to afford Suh….so draft a DT…..trade up if you have to.

We will get comp picks this year….as will many teams…….

  4. SOEbuc Says:

You have to resign Suh if you’re gonna resign Suh cus Shaq is not worth that money unless you have pressure on the inside, especially on the left. For some extremely stupid reason they moved Shaq to the left after getting 19.5 sacks on the right. Great LB, but it’s too much to gamble with trying to resign others. I’m taking David and Godwin all day before I pay Shaq.

  5. Adrnagy Says:

The best to happen was the return of vea. Thanked god he’s not a free agent. All you will be picking shaq over vea including joe.

  6. Erick Says:

It would be great to keep Shaq, but he has already said he “wants to break the bank.” I feel a team will do that. If he wants to be the highest paid OLB in game then Bucs can’t keep him.

Let’s not forget, Joe almost put out an APB for Shaq and JPP pre NFC Championship. I don’t think it’s a coincidence they showed back up once Vea returned.

  7. geno711 Says:

Nobody is picking Shaq over Vea. Nobody is picking Vea over Shaq.

This is about using Vea with Shaq and JPP as a combination to make an effective pass rush. When you have all three of those guys, you have the best version of our pass rush. Two is less effective. If you think you can have Vea and no talent guys on the outside and be effective – that is just not happening.

When you create pressure with 4, most of the times you are an elite defense.

If you could just recycle guys on the outside by drafting a new one at spot 32 – let us all know which guy that would be for the Buc’s. Highly unlikely next year you get one that will be that effective. Let me know which one of those draft prospects will be for sure a hit in this defensive scheme.

If you think you can get an elite pass rusher in free agency without paying him 15 per year, tell us which guy that is please.

  8. Will Says:

Don’t want to lose this guy BUT if we do. Then I say they’ll go after Hassan Redick, he’s younger was drafted by Arizona in 2017 and went to Temple. His market value is less than Shaq’s although I don’t know what Arizona’s cap looks like. There are some good OLB possibly going to hit the market. Again I don’t want to lose Shaq but if he wants to chase the money we probably won’t be able to afford him.

  9. geno711 Says:

    Will:
An interesting take on Reddick – thanks. I actually think he is a more natural fit for Bowles 3-4 defense than some of the other pass rush guys mentioned.

Yes, if we can get him for quite a bit less than Shaq, he might be the right fit – not as much as a name but the right fit.

  10. Adrnagy Says:

Geno … there won’t be any money left to keep your 4. (Suh).
Suh had a better season, postseason and SB than shaq.

So you don’t think a melvin Ingram , v. Miller, o. Vernon etc will come take discount for SB ? And you keep 90% of roster ?

  11. tbbucs3 Says:

    Adnagy

Edge rushers are more valuable than than interior lineman in todays NFL so you have to value Shaq over Suh. (Unless your Aaron Donald)

Melvin Ingram, Olivier Vernon and JJ Watt are all over 30 and past their primes. Von Miller is not the type of guy that would take a paycut.

#1 priority is to sign Shaq whos just now entering his prime at 28 years old.

  12. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

Pass rushers with his talent too hard to find, sign him for sure.

  13. Rayjay1122 Says:

Gotta keep the Defense together. Defense wins Super bowls. I think OJ Howard and Fournette are more expendable based on our roster and positional value.

  14. geno711 Says:

    Adrnagy.

I just differ in opinions than you.

I wanted Tom Brady. You wanted Jameis Winston.
I wanted a right tackle. You wanted Javon Kinlaw.
I have always liked Carlton Davis. You have not.
I always liked BA. You have not.
You said the NFL will cancel the season. I did not.
You said that the Bucs would with 7-9 games this past year. I was silent because I had no idea.

You said that you had a close source with the Bucs in December 2019 and that you knew that Jameis and Carl Nassib would be back. I think you said at one point that Jameis was going to get 5 years and 150 million from us.

So far, I am ok with where we have disagreed.
    Maybe you are correct today.

  15. geno711 Says:

    Sorry Adrnagy and others.

I apologize. I think that last post was passive aggressive. But actually, I am not sure that I understand that concept as well as I should!

  16. mg Says:

I would do everything to keep the defense together. TB-12 with the superb O-line can win with the leftovers. He did it for 20 years in Foxborough.

  17. Adrnagy Says:

Lol.geno Mr. Perfect. ! It’s cool. I don’t hold nothing back against you or anyone.
Every buc fan will disagree and agree, but when someone holds grudges that’s something else.
Everyone has a different opinion. Move on.
I barely remember your last post and you go way back .. smh.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Our offense is mostly under contract…….Brady, Wirfs, Cappa, Jensen, Marpet, Smith, OJ, Brate, Rojo, Vaughn, Evans, Johnson, Miller…

The remaining pieces….Gronk, AB Fournette are luxuries….even Godwin

You have to spend money to keep this defense together

LVD, Shaq & Suh if you can….that is a must.

We can live without Godwin (as difficult as that will be)……we just don’t have the money.

  19. Devin DiPalma Says:

How hard is it to come to shaq, pony up the dough, but back log the steepest payments after this coming year? Seems shaq could be understanding of that.

The other thing not being mentioned on many sites is that Tampa actually has one of the best cap situations in the league. Who’s going to be able to afford to pay him more? Not many teams even have the cap space to do so.

  20. Mike C Says:

Didn’t he disappear when Vita was out?

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Our cap situation is very deceptive……we do have some space but we have many high dollar FAs to sign. We could possibly eat up the entire cap with Godwin & Shaq,

  22. DaBux Says:

    3 Years.
    66 milllion.
    45 million guaranteed.

    No more than that.

  23. Joe in Michigan Says:

I was just reading an article that said Tom Brady and Von Miller are friends. Just throwing that out there (I was looking up Von Miller to see if he’s healthy). Sign Shaq, if the Bucs can. If not, get a veteran and draft an edge rusher, 1st or 2nd Round, if there’s one there that fits the pick.

  24. Joe in Michigan Says:

I’m pretty sure Von Miller will be cut. Just my humble opinion.

  25. Bucs Guy Says:

Draft the positions you don’t resign (RB, WR or DT) most likely in the top 3 rounds unless you are building depth or pick someone up in FA. I’m assuming Bucs re-sign Shaq, LVD, Gronk and Succop. I would love to see Suh return and draft a DT at #32. You can probably get the 2nd or 3rd best in the draft vs. The 8th best Edge or OT.

I don’t see Shady or Fournette back, so you get a RB in FA and another in the 2nd rd. Try to strike gold again in the 3rd with WR to replace Godwin. Deep WR class. Maybe take a chance on an Edge here also.

Round out with depth players on day 3 at OL, CB and LB.

  26. David Says:

Shaq & LVD 4 year deals. Push some money out to when they know the cap will start skyrocketing next year. This will take Shaq through his prime and LVD to retirement.
They also need to sign Godwin to 6 years. He’s about to be 25. Extend his money out so it’s not as big a hit on the cap next year

  27. Drunkinybor Says:

I 100 percent agree. If we let Shaq walk what the hell are we doing here. He’s proven his worth he wants to be here he is elite in pass rush and stopping the run. I hope to God we don’t start thinking it’s easy to replace the guy. I’ll say it again it was a disaster letting Michael Bennett walk and if we let Shaq walk it will be for far more egregious.

  28. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

Shaq is NOT REPLACEABLE. He must be signed, at least tagged again. Some of you put Godwin ahead of Shaq are crazy. Draft an EDGE? Really? The Bucs have been without a pass rusher for how many years and you think we can just draft one with the #32 choice?! We so lucked into Shaq – the Bucs paid him $4MM in ’19. Forget 19.5 sacks, with just what Shag did this year, don’t you think ALL other 31 NFL teams are kicking themselves in missing out on Shaq?!

Joe likes to say CG and Shaq are 1A and 1B and Succop is #2. I disagree. Shaq is #1 all by himself, then Succop at #2. I might even say LVD or Suh might be 3 and 4. When you consider the money teams with throw at Godwin, he is a luxury the Bucs will have to live without and the can be done with offensive adjustments.

  29. #1bucsfan Says:

Yea we gotta keep Shaq. I will say his play dropped off when vea got injured so that should go into account I think we let Godwin go. We’re pretty deep at WR but it’s still going to hurt if he goes.

  30. JohnBoy Says:

LOL – this is why being a GM is hard. It is all trade offs.

  31. Pirate Bay@TB12 Says:

    Shaq, Suh and LVD.
