Wager Carefully With Tom Brady

January 26th, 2021

Be careful.

While Clark Judge of SI.com may not have set out to type his recent NFL notebook column with gamblers in mind, he still offered up wise information for those reaching out to their short-term investment broker as the Super Bowl nears.

The early odds at BetMGM has the Chiefs giving three to the Bucs.

And it appears the early narrative from national NFL sites, organizations and beat writers is many are thinking the Chiefs will run the Bucs out of their home crib in the Super Bowl.

Careful before calling your short-term investment broker, Judge seems to suggest. Remember who you may be wagering against.

But this is Tom Brady, people. Each year Brady haters tell us that he’s washed up, and each year we find him back in the Super Bowl. But that wasn’t supposed to happen this season because … well, because he didn’t have Bill Belichick, the Patriots and youth. Plus, he had to win three road playoff games, and when’s the last time that happened?

Sunday, that’s when.

That’s why I’d be careful before counting Brady & Co. out. They just beat Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees in succession. They won their last seven starts. Their defense is vastly improved from the loss to Kansas City this season, making critical stops and bailing out the Bucs from a second-half collapse Sunday.

And they have the greatest quarterback of the Super Bowl era.

Joe actually likes this rematch the way the defense is playing and the pass rush revived from the dead, in large part thanks to the return of Vita Vea.

And on the flip side, the Bucs’ offensive line has been dominant in the playoffs and Antonio Brown should return.

On paper, the Super Bowl seems to favor the Chiefs.

As always, the Super Bowl is never played on paper.

The team should be fully healthy by game time. Expect a solid game – and a win.

  2. SteveK Says:

    Go Bucs!

We have Vita back, and hopefully we get our safeties and AB back for the big game.

I love that we made it, and that we get a rematch against the Chiefs.

Also, I’m a big fan of us playing at home, and getting two weeks before the big game. A lot of our guys are older, especially along the D-Line, and the extra rest should benefit them a ton to come out fresh two Sundays from now.

We have to find a way to get to Mahomes with the pass rush. We can’t let him drop it off to Kelce/Cheetah and kill us. Play smart, swarm, and lay the wood.

  3. Bird Says:

    Agree joes

Vea has 2 weeks to get up to speed. I saw vea had a few more snaps then he was supposed to. Think he had 33-34. No reason he cant play 50-60 in 2 weeks. He was chucking guys around , pushing the line into the qb and taking double teams so jpp and shaq could feed.

Also , with all the drops…watch the game again. Mike evans dropped that huge pass down field wherein they should have scored points. And he didnt jump at all for the tipped INT. Tyler had the other drop downfield. Godwin had a big drop. SO AB has best hands on team. We need some sure hands back.

Dont forget playoff lenny playing better. Hopefully rojo gets healthy.

Jpp gets 2 weeks on his knee

    Winfield back

Hopefully whitehead ok in 2 weeks

The real question is: How many stops will the Bucs D get against Mahomes / Hill / Kelce? Bucs played better after the first quarter against the Chiefs last time but were too far behind by then. Just can’t let Hill get behind us…make someone else beat us.

  5. Cannon Says:

I believe our defense will stop their offense more than their defense will stop ours.

Don’t get me wrong, I foresee a shootout… but we have the better defense, and our offense is just as good (if not better) than the Chiefs.

  6. Kentucky Buc Says:

Bucs have what most teams don’t . Speed blitzers at linebacker. Teams don’t blitz Mahomes much because he escapes and makes plays. He won’t get away from LD and DW. Hes not that fast. Blitz his azz

  7. Snook Says:

Raiders were favored by 4 on this day eighteen years ago.

  8. '79 Defense Says:

“…pass rush revived from the dead, in large part thanks to the return of Vita Vea.”

Out of all of JPP’s and Shaq’s sacks on Sunday, I wonder how many of those plays Vea was on the field.

  9. Ontario Mike Says:

Get tough wit the Cheetah and double him. Follow Kelce wherever he goes. I think our D can get to Mahomes but he is a running threat too!

  10. Joe Says:

Out of all of JPP’s and Shaq’s sacks on Sunday, I wonder how many of those plays Vea was on the field.

NFL.com had a video of all the Bucs sacks (maybe they still do) from Sunday. Seems like Vea was on the field for most. He most certainly got massive penetration which trapped Rodgers. If he tried to move right or left, Shaq/JPP were there.

  11. Brandon Says:

For the record… Vea played 33 snaps. That was right around his average that he has earlier this season and past seasons. He doesn’t normally get his snaps into the 40s.

  12. ModHairKen Says:

Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce and Mahomes.

Last two weeks of players they supposedly could not beat — on the road: Rodgers, Adams and Aaron Jones. Brees, Thomas and Kamara.

Brady, Evans, Godwin, AB, Gronk, Fournette, Brate, Miller and Johnson. I’m not even mentioning the OL because everyone knows it is the strength of this team. Period.

And then on Defense, JPP, Suh, Shaq, White, David, SMB, Whitehead, Carlton Davis and Mike Edwards.

You tell me. Who’s going to win this game?

  13. Christopher Schiefen Says:

They confirmed Drew’s retirement, and basically forced Aaron to examine if he even wants to be on his team anymore. And Mahomes is banged up…

  14. alton green Says:

Ontario Miked; YOU NAILED IT! I’ve been preaching the same thing since the last game. Just watch the Pat’s 2 wins a couple yrs ago. They doubled Hill and Dante Hi-tower punches Kelse at the line just enuff to disrupt their timing. In our 1st game against the Chiefs ruined me for Todd Bowles. You can’t wait till we’re down 17 pts before you realize HOLY CRAP. Especially against the Chiefs

  15. David Says:

I agree with that assessment towards the end Joe. I like the Bucs to win it because of the O & D lines.
They just played at the Saints and at the Packers.
Both those teams have better lines, on both sides of the ball, than the Chiefs.
I think because of the play in the trenches, the Buccaneers are going to shock people.

On top of that, I fully do not expect Brady to throw three interceptions in a row again in the second half. Take out a couple of dropped passes and two interceptions and it’s a complete blowout with 40+ points on the board.

  16. 99.97.92.55.47.40.28.20.7 Says:

@joe it’s not just Vita Vea, as I recall Dean was out for the first game as well with an injury.

  17. Listnfrmafar Says:

It appears that Kelcie is not a fan of getting popped when he slants over the middle. I feel a few hits from White might make him a bit fun shy. Hill is story, it will be interesting on how Bowles approaches him and Watkins and Harman are no slouches either. I have the utmost confidence they won’t be able to run and Mahomes with turf toe eliminates some of the scrambling but the Chiefs face the same challenges with Bucs O. I see this as the best D that day wins and Bucs appear to have that edge. Go Bucs!

  18. bojim Says:

Love that they’re playing the defending champs. Beat the best and you are the best.

  19. Smashsquatch Says:

Vea is the X factor, the catalyst that makes the D engine run.

  20. August 1976 Buc Says:

Brady has made a lot of money for many people betting ON him, and Brady has cost a lot of people money that have bet Against him lol All the playoff games, and the Super Bowls. lol. Wager carefully is right, because if the O line does they Job again, And the D just keeps their head above water, the Bucs have a good shot at hoisting the LOMBARDI. GO BUCS!!!!!!

  21. ArmchairGM Says:

All the bettors see is Mahomes, Kelce, and Hill on offense. Never mind that the Chiefs lost their All Pro LT at the end of the last game and they haven’t had their RT for a while. Vea was hurt the last game.

For reference, Vea was a factor on 4 of the 5 sacks.
1st sack: Forced Rodgers to move to the right
    2nd + 3rd: Ate a double team
4th: JPP goes inside, Vea stunts around the outside, LT has no idea who to block
    5th: Wasn’t out there
