How To Burn The Saints

January 14th, 2021

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

Joe is of the mind that the Bucs will have to win a shootout Sunday.

Given Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles’ awful history against Sean Payton’s offenses and how the Bucs shamefully shat themselves defensively against a backup XFL hack, how could a sane person not expect the slimy Saints to roll up 35 points?

And in the mind of a BSPN X’s and O’s guy, the door is open to unleash a scoreboard-electrifying offense for the Bucs.

Per Matt Bowen, that opening in the slimy Saints defense is the seam route.

From Week 13 through the Bucs’ wild-card win over Washington, Brady has thrown 14 touchdowns and only one interception. He’s playing his best football of the season. He’s dialed in. The timing and ball location are there. So yes, I still like Brady throwing out of 12 personnel with play-action. And we will see that versus the Saints. But the Bucs will also need to scheme up New Orleans’ 2-Man coverage and attack the middle of the field.

Through wild-card weekend, the Saints have played 2-Man on 22.4% of coverage snaps, tops in the league. They will use their two-deep safeties to bracket, jump and cut the in-breakers in Tampa’s offense with aggressive, grabby man-coverage underneath. Look for the Bucs to clear the middle of the field this time around, occupying the safeties with outside verticals and clearing space for Brady. Think seam balls to receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin with solid location on the throw.

Joe thinks that Bowen is overlooking someone. That would be Antonio Brown.

Slowly but steadily, Brown has been more and more involved in the Bucs offense. He was virtually a non-factor in his first game when the Saints blew the Bucs out of the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway.

Joe thinks it is fair to say the Bucs are a different team now. Brady is on fire. Brown is being used often. And the Bucs are even getting solid play from the offensive line and Leonard Fournette off the bench.

Let it rip Sunday, Bruce. Joe is thinking the Bucs will need 40 (at least) to win this game.

A shootout in the Superdome can be won. No need to be too stressed about it. The Bucs did it there against the same defensive coordinator in 2018.

    Last Game:
Ali Marpet – out – left side of line completely useless
Chris Godwin – first game back with broken finger – lots of snaps, not 100%
Antonio Brown – first game as a Buc – not much impact

  2. Show Me the TDs Says:

Our Receivers and Tight Ends need to fight!!

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m thinking AB & Brate with a touch of Scotty & Tyler……Saints will focus on Evans, Godwin & Gronk……

And…..Joe may one day eat his words on the backup XFL hack bashing…..

  4. Lamarcus Guiton Says:

Yea that even if we get the ball the long enough. Brees and co are gonna dunk and donk their thru this game. We have to get stops and have them punt and we can’t have 3 and outs. Don’t get pretty. Control the clock and keep their guys off the field. Outside of doing this we have no chance of beating them

  5. Casual Observer Says:

Not worried about our O. It’s the D that needs the most attention.

  6. Georger Says:

I’m worried about no Cappa. The line has been a bright spot and has given TB12 time he needs to hit his WR. There will be pressure up the middle not good.

  7. Nick2 Says:

The key to this game is Devon White and blitzing him to get Drew Brees off his game. If anyone can do it Devon can do it. He missed the first playoff game and he played at LSU in the Superdome as home games. Jiminy Christmas Todd send 45 in and send him often he wants to show of for his boys!!! (I can here Gruden saying!!). White is hungry its the playoffs and hes going home to play in front of his family and friends. Please Devon save us from the dreaded Saints!! If the Rams upset the Packers with their defense we can go to LA and shock the world!!!

  8. All lives matter Says:

And don’t forget the RB swing routes. We get toasted a lot on them especially to Kamara

  9. Nick2 Says:

Georger I hear you, I am praying that what BA said about Stinnie being used to the strength of Suh is spot on. I mean practicing against Suh every day and holding your own wpuld be impressive. Lets pray BA is right hes the one with the eyes on Stinnie in practice. In BA i trust lets get it done GO BUCS!! I HATE THE DAMN SAINTS and their trash talking defense. It would be so sweet to shut their arses up once and for all!!!!

  10. gp Says:

In an offensive blow-out, the first defensive stop may just be the game winner.

  11. Georger Says:

Nick2 – If LA wins the will come here to Tampa and play in RJ. Could have two home games.

  12. All lives matter Says:

    just don’t defer

  13. SlyPirate Says:

    BRATE
The Bucs saved Brate all season and used him as their secret weapon in game 1. There was no tape on Brate and Washington’s #3 Defense had no answers.

    THE REAL QUESTION
Is there a secret weapon in this game?

  14. bojim Says:

    Agreed. Shootout.

  15. Bird Says:

    Last time in new orleans

We had what 8-10 penalties. 2 defense pass interference which could have been picks

Brady threw pick #1 to mike evans after a penalty and so 3rd and long. Brady thought mike continuing deep and mike checked up (first game of season with no chemistry yet)

Brady threw pick #2 after another penalty so 2nd or 3rd and forever which was pick six trying an out to justin watson who will not be running routes for bucs in near distant future. Watson screwed brady and winston

    —-

The key is brady. Defense has to many holes this year. Its needs work. So brady will need 400 and 4 to win. Brady has to put team on back.

  16. View from 132 Says:

I think Bucs fans, myself included, are conditioned by the Dungy/Gruden years (and the McKay playoff teams, too) that we need to win defensive, lower scoring games.

This team is the anti-Bucs. It is built to win 72-66. We can’t wrap our heads around it, but don’t think Sean Payton isn’t fully prepared to win with short passes, running and control the clock to keep the ball away from the Bucs offense. A shoot out favors the Bucs. The Saints defense has to get pressure on Brady because Lattimore can’t cover more than 1 of 6 or 7 potential playmakers. Just go back to when Jameis beat the Saints. It wasn’t 17-14.

  17. Perimeter Blocker Says:

Begging the defense to make some plays… (score?) The secondary has to play above their head…

  18. VABucsfan Says:

If Ryan Fitzy tore apart this Saints D, why can’t Brady! Dude put up 48 points against this D, now granted it was a week 1 matchup, but the point is, it can be done! Oh yeah, and it was with Koetter as coach. Arians offenses have been awful against the Saints!!

  19. Listnfrmafar Says:

Perimeter you are correct TPO is only necessary if you cannot score. Let them worry about that and playing catch up. Key is if they score first not to give up. Any given Sunday!!!

  20. Mike Says:

If Gronk can block against the Saints as well as he did against the Skins, Brady is going to get it done on offense. He just needs a little protection. On D, they have to be aggressive. No zone defense. None.

  21. CalBucsFan Says:

With perhaps the two best QBs and tons of talent on both teams, I have no doubt there will be plenty of offense on display Sunday.

However, I believe the coaching matchups are the real key to victory on Sunday. Not so much Arians vs. Peyton, but the ‘Aints OC Carmichael vs. Todd Bowles defense. Carmichael’s been their OC for 12 years now, he and Brees are as fine tuned as TB12 was with John McDaniels in NE. However, Bowles has only 2-years in building the Bucs defense with many key positions filled with 1-2 yr. draftees.

On the other side of the ball, NO’s DC Allen has built one nasty, dirty playing defense over the last 5-yrs., while Leftwich is only in his 2nd yr. as OC in Tampa, 1st year with Brady, and the offense just starting to mesh over the last 4-5 games.

Clearly, NOS have an advantage from the coaching-longevity standpoint with their players and system. But can the Bucs coaches and all-star cast members Brady, Gronk, Evans, Godwin, Brown, Suh, Pierre-Paul, David and White overcome those advantages and not only overwhelm but finally dominate the ‘Aints and win on at least one, if not both sides of the ball?

  22. $acbuc$ Says:

You show the team the tape of the fitz Game and Winston game when we beat them. You tell them we all got personal vendettas with our one on one battles and go head up. Beast out and get some of that Robert Ayers sauce. It’s time to FIGHT and protect your FAMILY.

Couch Coach say Brate Scooter Sneak Tyler would be my secret weapons. Give then some sniffing sauce and man up. Don’t get punked and lay it on the line for your family boys. They not expecting it. Tell mike run 9 routes on that fool and once Tom drop one in the bucket on Rattimore he gonna be rattled. His confidence go down. Mike when you go up to catch the ball he fighting you in the air. Use them unintentional elbows upside his head. Scooter they come at you tryna kill you use that dead leg on them and cook they cleats for a cause. AB and CG watch y’all legs the hitting y’all too low to be wideouts. They scared of that power. Lenny quit tip toeing and run harder baby. Although We need that tip toe in the snow in GB. I seen you take on Deion Jones and Neal in pass pro. Car crash like collision Lenny you was a BOY out there. Cam you had some of your best games against the Aints. Let’s go beat up big bro

  23. Defense Rules Says:

“Joe is of the mind that the Bucs will have to win a shootout Sunday.” Me too.

Brady is obviously the key to us scoring a ton of points, but I think 2 guys that Bowens overlooked are Gronk & Miller. Neither will get a ton of passes thrown their way, but BOTH could be the key to our scoring points.

Gronk’s been real good at moving the chains & scoring (7 TDs). Scotty’s been very good at stretching the field & scoring (3 TDs in limited snaps). Neither contributed much in our last game against the Saints … Miller was 1 catch in 3 targets for 10 yds, while Gronk had 1 catch in 6 targets for 2 yds).

Noticed something in that last game also; Brady was 1-for-7 deep in the 1st half (with 1 INT) and 1-for-1 deep in the 2nd half. So our deep ball was pretty much totally ineffective AND we only ran 5 times in the whole game. Only thing left is short passes (duh), so we kinda became one-dimensional pretty quickly, which probably made the Saints defense even happier. Almost as happy as the 3 INTs probably made them. I don’t see us making the same mistakes this time around.

  24. $acbuc$ Says:

Johnny tell the defense we need Carlton to lock Michael Thomas down like he did in game one. 2 catches. Figure out how to get Dean on Cook Tweez on Alvin . Safeties blitzing and LBs in coverage with the hands up at the line. Stop leaving Smb on a island he can’t handle all the stuff you have him doin this year. He played everything but defensive line. Herb Miller looks better in Zone then most of the corners why isn’t he playing. Ross looked like he was gonna cry last time we played them. Smb and Ross look like they been looking at Ryan Smith tape. The Trail and make the tackle not cover and read the route tape. Dean relying on his speed to much. Stop bear hugging and put your shoulder on them you to big they can’t take to many of them from you. That how you got a concussion and keep getting stiff armed. Get your face out of the tackle box boy. Capt Lavonte you held Jimmy Graham and put him out the game once how is cook cooking you. Whitehead don’t put on a quarter inch of muscle and can’t get off a block. Go low around that lineman he can’t get a solid block on a bowling ball. Use your speed and anticipate because you have superior play recognition. Todd don’t have four 6 foot 5 D linemen and not be able to block and tip passes from a 6 foot quarterback. Bruce Byron and Tom don’t have 6’5 pass catchers and let 5’9 corners defend them. Don’t have all this talent and not use all of them NOW. It win or go home.

How about throwing the ball to Brate, and leave Gronkowski in to block? Plus, Bowles needs to get with the program on DB blitzing. Yeah, Winfield is a stud, but so is Jordan Whitehead who has almost disappeared in the defense. Give LVD and Gholston their heads, and spring them loose. They are in the playoffs, and both are all too familiar with Payton.

  28. $acbuc$ Says:

Johnny Bruce offensive system needs a fullback or Kittles because Kelce wouldn’t work. He got OJ Achilles hurt and Gronk shoulder went out with all that blocking with premier pass catchers. Look at CG blocking with a broke finger. No max protection that has hurt us from the gate every since he got here. How you gonna say you like your pass catchers catching when our best mis match players are blocking. Don’t be a hypocrite Bruce you hurting our chance to make history. Buckle Up protect Tom

  29. Laura Moo Says:

A kid living his dream and leaving everything on the field in a NFL playoff game isn’t a “hack”. Could argue that Bowles is a hack.

  30. TampaTown Says:

Laura: you could also argue that Bowles su¢ks and should be fired if we get embarrassed by his defense

  31. Aaron E May Says:

***the Saints have played 2-Man on 22.4% of coverage snaps, tops in the league. They will use their two-deep safeties to bracket, jump and cut the in-breakers in Tampa’s offense with aggressive, grabby man-coverage underneath***

We need to play this same D! Plus, move our DE inside to rush the passer..with some middle blitzing from White…Let’s make this a track meet…just play aggressive…whatever happens…happens!

  32. BucEmUp Says:

Its not only about outscoring the Saints, its about keeping their offense on the sidelines. The longer our offensive drives the higher the chance of winning the game. They get cold, our defense gets rested and they run out of time.

Leftwich had better mix it up good with some short throws and pre snap motions to let Brady play at his best. This is such a winnable game. The winner will be the team with the best gameplay and coaching staff. Two loaded teams this should be a hell of a game.

  33. Delaware Bucs Fan Says:

Brate ran that middle seem route for years with Jameis. Get AB in the same area with his freak skill set. PLEASE!

This game is winnable, it will take some gutchecks and game planning.
