Bruce Arians Likes Mac Jones’ Fit With Bucs Offense

January 12th, 2021

Is this the year the Bucs look to snag a stud quarterback prospect in the NFL Draft?

Bucco Bruce Arians was talking college QBs this morning.

Arians was a guest on The Dan Patrick Show (SiriusXM, Channel 211) chatted about watching the college football national title game last night.

Alabama, of course, dominated Ohio State with their beastly offense rolling up 35 first-half points on Ohio State. Alabama QB Mac Jones is an intriguing NFL prospect, though not necessarily a first-round pick.

But Arians made it seem like he’s a good fit for the Bucs offense.

“I think the first thing you look for in a quarterback is a brain; he’s obviously a really, really bright young man,” Arians said of Jones. “And then accuracy, and he has great accuracy with the ball. He is not one of the more mobile guys that some people really love. But if you’re going to play from the pocket and move him around like they do, very much similar to what we do, he’s a very talented young man.”

With the Bucs marching in the playoffs and riding a five-game winning streak, Joe isn’t investing much thought into the draft.

However, Joe would love to see the Bucs do the smart thing and find a quality QB prospect in the draft so they don’t waste the incredible QB incubator that sits empty at One Buc Palace. There’s Tom Brady, Tom Moore, Byron Leftwich, Clyde Christensen and Bruce Arians — and no high-ceiling young QB to soak up all that knowledge and coaching.

Joe let’s not talk about the draft till we finish this run please. is the first time in the last 13 years that we actually have a shot at making the super bowl. let’s enjoy the ride while it last.

go get em, if he’s there

  3. Durango 95 Says:

Watching Jones throughout the season I’ve been thinking the same thing. Might just be a good fit.

    So much for smokescreens…….

  5. Brian Says:

I would focus on Trask out of UF for future QB. He’s put up big numbers in the SEC

  6. Lamarcus Guiton Says:

Well take out Byron Leftwich and Brady. Those 2 can’t develop Qbs. Especially Leftwich. Would you really want him coaching a young qb? I dont. Last 2 young qbs Leftwich coached went from high potential Qbs to borderline out of the league…. IN THE SAME YEAR!!!

  7. buccs99 Says:

Agreed. If Jones falls to the bucs, i would absolutely take him. I know it’s not an immediate need for next year but we gotta have that guy ready to groom.

How did Amy Trask do against a no defense league team in the bowl game? Looked like shiite.

Oh, that's right. His coach said he didn't want to be there. That explains it. Put out bad film on purpose to show disgust about not playing in the playoffs so scouts can ding you and cost you money by dropping in the draft.

    Makes sense.

  9. Guadalajara, Mexico Fan Says:

My thought is that for first round Bucs need to focus on CB or Pass Rusher.
These are really needs that this coming weeks vs Saints will show the weakness. Hope I get wrong

Love my Gators and love what Trask has accomplished. Just not sold on the guy at the next level. He also looks like a career ending knee injury waiting to happen.

  11. Leighroy Says:

Jones: Throws 10-yard crossing routes for 50-yard tds to Devonta Smith 100 times behind an O-line of all future NFL draft picks

Scouts: what an elite QB prospect!

  12. Pewter Power Says:

This team proved they have no interest in grooming a young quarterback or edge rusher

  13. Tye Says:

It would be great and refreshing to see the Bucs draft such an accomplished QB that already has been trained in accuracy and good decision making and takes care of the ball… Who isn’t a detriment to the team constantly being the reason they lose games!

  14. SlyPirate Says:

The Bucs will draft 3/4 DL and LB in R1 and 2 (Barmore in R1).

Mac may be in play in R3-5. He’s got a lot of hype but the lipstick will come off that pig once people realize he’s got the best WR, RB, OL, Defense, and offensive coordinator in the country. (See AJ McCarron)

Seriously, how hard is it to throw #6 Smith?

  15. gotbbucs Says:

Pass rushers and pass defenders. Forget about a QB this year.

  16. geno711 Says:

I am with the group that

    1. Goes for the best player available in the draft because he is the mostly likely to help on a team that is already goo.

    2. Would not worry about grooming a quarterback for that reason. We have one of the top 10 QBs for next season. He has also said that he wanted to play past next year.

By the way, there have been times that grooming a QB has worked.

More often, a guy just comes in now a-days and shows he can play. Neither Herbert or Burrows had great offensive lines but they both showed they could play in this league. Same with Watson when he came in with Houston. Same with Wilson when he came to the Seahawks.

  17. Buczilla Says:

Good plan, count me in since Brady ain’t getting any younger despite his great season.

    ………………..

You should probably think before you type.
Gators were missing 25 players! Including the Top 6 Receivers
Who do you know that could overcome that?
    10 starters out.
SMDH at some of you pretend football fans.

  19. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I’m not a Gators fan but Kyle Trask is twice the QB that Mac Jones is.

Far closer to a Brady type with intelligence, accuracy, reading defenses, leading his receivers open, good touch, very low INTs.

And he’s projected to be taken in the second round just like Jones will be.

  20. TampaTown Says:

In addition to QB how about we draft a DE for once. DE not DT

  21. SB : Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

    Amen FLBoyInDallas!
Not only that but Trask did what he did After his top 4 wrs from last yr All went into the NFL.
He put up his numbers this yr with an Entirely different cast from the incredible numbers he put up Last yr with 4 nfl wrs.

70 Tds to 15 ints in 24 starts?!?!?!?
    Those numbers are insane!

  22. Hodad Says:

Mac Jones will be going to the Pats in the first round, mark it down.

  23. AMI_Chris Says:

Unless the Bucs win the Super Bowl this year, doesn’t next year’s number one draft pick have to be able to help the team right away? Even if it’s a stud D player, that will still help TB12.

    Is that a good fit?
A quarterback with less than average mobility. Offensive coordinator is Josh McDaniels who certainly was solid with Brady but everyone else McDaniels has favored has been mobile quarterbacks.

A quarterback with less than average mobility going to a team with some of the worst skill position players.

Not seeing the fit! Why do you see it?

  25. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Geno

As usual I agree with you. He’s not a great fit in NE.

OTOH…Who did Arians just describe? Simply change the name Jones with Brady and it’s the exact same skill set…brains…accuracy…a WINNER…and lacking in mobility. We have the line now to protect Jones.

This seems like a no brainer to me if he’s available without trading away too much to move up. I hope the other teams go with the current trend and look for running QB’s.

Jones is the perfect fit. He has the same style as Brady and would be the perfect pupil. In addition this gives Brady the flexibility to play two more years because we would have a talented backup. Could work out like Favre/Rodgers.

  26. Capt.Tim Says:

I havent thought about the draft yet.
First time Ive said that in 15 years!
    Scw you Jameis.
Totally agree with getting a young QB, DE, and OT in the building.
We should be able to get a talented guy in rounds 1-3, no matter which order.
We dont really have many holes to fill. We mostly need depth, and experience for young guys.

Pretty sure Suh, JPP, Fornette, McCoy, etc will hsng around one more year. We should be SuperBowl favorites next year.
And thats if we dont win it this year!

  27. Gofortheface30 Says:

Lol twice the quarterback Mac Jones is. Jesus stfu. So funny how gator fans and haters of Bama are coming out of the woodwork trying to minimize what Mac Jones accomplished. And no – you do not know more than scouts. No, you do not, have not, will not know how to analyze film. Spare me the whole “derrr Trask is TWICE the quarterback Mac Jones” is Gator fans because you clearly have some sort of axe to grind and you can kiss Sabans rings

  28. View from 132 Says:

I’d package the entire draft and a couple picks next year if needed… go get Deshaun Watson! Brady will not last forever, and that dude is the real deal for the next 8 or 10 years.

  29. Posey99 Says:

Call me crazy, but I’d like to see Carson Wentz as a buc. I think the coaching, scheme, play calling and recruiting are garbage in philly.

  30. Dan Williamson Says:

Everyone.Shaddup!. Focus on what we have right now. We are one of the last four teams still standing in the NFC. Ya sound stupid. Worrying about the draft off of some off hand comment from Arians taken without context. We must concentrate on sending good vibes to the GOAT and our offensive and defensive lines. That done everything else will fall into place. No wonder you keep losing your fantasy leagues. I havent paid fees in 20 years because I know its all about the grind. One game at a time. Max prep and execution from the trades to the waiver wire. So please. STIFLE yaselves. Sheeeze ya bunch of ediths. LETS GO!

  31. Kentucky Buc Says:

    Amen Dan

  32. BringBucsBack Says:

The HC is talking about the draft and the DC is interviewing for other jobs?

Are any of the other 27 coaches on the staff aware of a playoff game this weekend against the best team in the NFC?

  33. firethecannons Says:

Browns beat the Steelers by a ton. Aint no damn reason that next Sunday which is just like “any given Sunday” the Bucs can’t beat the Saints. Thats what it is with NFL each team has a certain amount of talent and sometimes the combinations just hit! Get the right attitude and play to win every play, every blade of grass every second after every snap.

  34. firethecannons Says:

This game isn’t gonna be like the last game and I think they know it.

  35. Kentucky Buc Says:

Eff the draft. Trade all your damn picks and some dbs for a couple of good corners

  36. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Ky

If you’re willing to trade up there is another guy on the Crimson Tide that would complete our defensive backfield. Patrick Surtain Jr. Just like Winfield his father was a star in the NFL which means Surtain, nor Winfield ever get star struck.
They followed their fathers in and out of NFL locker rooms and they’re not awed.

Of course being 6-2 202 lbs and rangy doesn’t hurt.

He ran a 4.5 in high school so he figures to be faster now…haven’t seen a more current 40.

And when I say this kid is a winner…it should be WINNER!!!

He was on three…yeah THREE high school state champions and that’s in the state of Florida…perhaps not Texas but still a hotbed of high school football.

He caps his career on a National Champion Alabama team last night.

Imagine if Surtain was our cover corner and Winfield was our safety. Whitehead is a pretty decent safety to pair with Winfield and Carlton Davis is ALMOST a cover corner…he’d be great as the second cover corner.

Our D would suddenly have some cover people in the backend.

  37. Charles Elliott Says:

Mac Jones is hands down the best qb in the country. Poised and cool in the pocket. Not easy to rattle. Does not make mental errors.
If I wanted a young quarterback it’s him. Trevor lawrence will be a busy. Fields is a good athletic guy, but that doesn’t last long in the league. Tom brady is the best quarterback ever. Mac Jones under Tom Brady for a year or two and see what happens.
Nobody thought Tom Brady was going anywhere.

  38. Ericb Says:

No way bucs will be able to get them…but were in a SB run here so who cares about the draft right now…what we can take from AL is thier play calling was superb!!! ….i hope BL BA and Were looking at the plays AL were running !!! Those are the type we need to be doing and well beat NO also hold back disguise our blitzes…

  39. Anonymous Says:

Have guys seen the bucs play the saints this year? They’re going to get smoked again.

  40. Carl Leonard Says:

Have to agree with Dan Willamson on that note….we will beat the saints this week. Who Dey? Who cares? Footage of Sean Payton dancing like a disco queen in the locker room after the last game should be enough motivation for a 42-17 Buccs W this week…anything less is uncivilized. Did the Steelers beat Cleveland 3 times this year? I didnt think so. Oh Cleveland blew them out….I expect the same results from MY BUCCS this week… we are aFAR better team.
