All Eyes On Carlton Davis

January 22nd, 2021

Now this guy has an opinion on Sunday’s game worthy of consideration.

He’s a close friend of Bucco Bruce Arians and a man who game-planned to face both the Buccaneers and Packers this season.

He’s Chuck Pagano, who retired last week after two seasons as Bears defensive coordinator following his tenure as Colts head coach.

Pagano joined SiriusXM NFL Radio this week and was asked about the Bucs-Packers matchup and Arians his former offensive coordinator in Indianapolis.

Pagano didn’t seem to think there’s a favorite in the game, and he suspects Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis will follow stud Packers receiver Davante Adams around the field most of the game. If so, that will be a huge key, per Pagano.

Critical for the Bucs defense, per Pagano, will be forcing field goals in the red zone because he doubts the Bucs will be able to shut down Aaron Rodgers. Pagano joked that Rodgers is a reason he retired and the Packers offense rarely makes a mistake.

“They just don’t turn the ball over. He’s so frick’n good,” Pagano said of Rodgers and his offense.

Interestingly, Pagano advised the Bucs to stay with the run game, assuming they don’t get behind. He believes the Bucs will have opportunities for success there and, like any good running game, it will help the Bucs defense in their tall task.

I agree mostly. The one caveat I would say is pressure. As we saw earlier this week Adam’s beat Carlton deep multiple times, but Rodgers couldn’t get the pass off because he was being hit. I think Davis and Adams are a big match up, but the trenches again will define the game.

    mitch

i agree…pressure got to rodgers early and he was shook the rest of the game….

i hope bowles mixes it up and keeps a 2nd safety(edwards) back deep with winfield to defend the deep ball….

i wanna see rodgers hit the deck at least 3 times and hit another 3…

    GO BUCS!!!!

I’m getting so nervous for this game ugh the anxiety, please football gods let our pass rushers have a day! I kinda hope it’s a snowy windy day that is all on the defense and run game

I trust BA, TB12, and BL to come up with a great offensive game plan. Pagano is entitled to his opinion, but I think TB12 keeps us ahead in this game and we’ll run the ball mainly to keep the Packers defense honest.

Yup, gotta get some hits on Rodgers early in the game. Shake him a bit mentally.

  6. David Says:

I think Davis will be on Adams most the game but I think it’ll be the same as the Saints- 2 deep safeties with everyone else playing tight underneath, so he’ll have help over the top.

The key is going to be pressure, like it is every week.

I look for the Packers to slow down a Buccaneer aggressive defense with misdirection, cut backs and play action. Defense must be disciplined to avoid over pursuing.

  8. Buccos Says:

I learned absolutely nothing from his insight. Now I know why the guy retired. Any armchair quarterback could have told you the exact same thing.

Im actually kinda upset Carlton Davis gets little to no mention for his outstanding game Sunday. Just look at the work this guy has done over the past two seasons. Look at all the great recievers he has,not just shut down, completely owned. Do yall remember when Julio Jones used to compile half of his seasons stats vs the Buccaneers?…….Well that dont happen anymore. Carlton is the reason. Daventa Adams? Im not worried a bit.

I dont know how good if seasons the Pro Bowl CBs had but Im bettin Carlton got snubbed. One historically brutal game in primetime vs the Chiefs didnt help.

    GO BUCS!!!

Thomas was not 100% he’s going to get multiple surgeries this off season. I hope they give Davis help Adam’s is a beast. The Bucs won’t win this game running a dive up the middle EVERY first down. Go AIR or Go Home!

  11. Duane Says:

We have watched it all season. This team finds ways to win more often than not. Perfect time for the defense to continue to roll. The pass rush is due for a big game, and we need it this week. The offense can score but it would be better to run the ball and reduce the number of possessions the discount doublecheck guy gets. I sense a Bucs win and a Suh snow angel in the Lambeau end zone.

He did do a great job on Thomas. But Thomas isn’t fully healthy, Davonte is.

And Davonte has some of the best footwork in the game alongside Cheetah Hill. Been watching too many clips of them this week, and they literally just dance DBs out of position and break their ankles.

Gonna need Davis, SMB, Dean and our secondaries to have one of the best games of their lives this weekend!

Feelin it. Thats my vibe too.
    Ggo Bucs!

  14. BucEmUp Says:

The only way our pass rush puts pressure on Rodgers is if our corners play at the line.Leaving these ten yard cushions he will dump the ball.out so quick jpp and barrett will hardly even be stood up much less getting pressure.Jam.at the line, rhrow off the timing, send the dogs and when you get the ball back eat up the clock with short completions. Occational deep shots. And with Brown out I sure hope its MILLER TIME!!!!

I am so glad that on the lead up to this game, no one is talking about putting pressure on Brady. Of course, the Packers will try to do that, but as a Brady top fan throughout his whole career, I will tell you that hasn’t worked very many times. And I agree with the guy who said it might be more of a key to winning to put that pressure on Rogers. I am looking for a more balanced game between passing and running than during the regular season, but, again I still expect Brady to find the weakest part of the Packer defense and exploit that. Of course, there’s not many weakk spots in the Packers defense. It’ll be good game, and the Bucs/Brady will prevail. Bucs 27, Packers 24
