Miller Brings Offense Back To Life

December 13th, 2020

Back in the game.

There are more than one or two people that think the Bucs offense began their slide with the signing of furniture-tossing, bicycle-throwing Antonio Brown.

Before Brown was on the team, Scotty Miller was the deep threat for Tom Brady. And with Miller stretching the field, he made it easier for other receivers to get open as defenses had to respect the deep ball.

With Brown on the roster, Miller lost several deep targets.

Well today, the offense looked much better. Part of that was that, yes, Miller played more. And yes, Brady hit him with a touchdown bomb of 48 yards in the second quarter to take a 7-6 lead.

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians said after the game that there was no concerted effort by the Bucs to get Miller more touches today. Arians even went so far as to say that Miller was a secondary target for Brady on the touchdown.

“He is the deep guy on that pattern and Tom [Brady] read [the play] out,” Arians said. “It was not designed to go to Scotty, it was designed to go to someone else.”

Miller confirmed this saying he thought he was Brady’s third option on the play.

“I was one of the later reads,” Miller said. “I think [Brady] was going through a flat route and then an intermediate out-route. … I think he probably liked the matchup” Miller had one-on-one with a Vikings corner.

Later on the Buccaneers Radio Network, Miller explained more.

“Tom was protected really well, he had a clean pocket,” Miller said. “As soon as I got out of my break I looked up and saw the ball floating in the air. It made it really easy for me. I was super excited.”

And so were Bucs fans.

There may be something to this notion that the addition of Brown siphoned targets and snaps from Miller, and thus has taken some explosiveness from the Bucs.

It’s not like Brown has played terribly. He’s been fine but has he been a difference-maker? Joe doesn’t think so.

When Miller catches bombs like he did from Brady today and in Las Vegas, those are very much difference-making plays.

The Bucs are set up to play 13-on-13 ball.

  2. Wesley Says:

Signing A.B. was unnecessary and just plain dumb. Should have used that money elsewhere. Same goes with Fournette.

  3. tbbucs3 Says:

This offense has 0 identity to it. 0 rhythm.

  4. ModHairKen Says:

Stop with the blaming Antonio Brown crap. He’s done everything asked and played hard.

  5. Elita Vita Says:

Let’s just think of Antonio Brown as kind of “the player to be named later” from acquiring Tom Brady. We all were looking for an upgrading at RB obtaining Fournette made sense. As for Scotty Miller I just call him “small but mighty”!!

I am not a big fan of Scotty Miller other than as a underdog, the guy is so light he is easy to get knocked off his route , can’t deny his speed Hope he can put on another 10 lbs in the offseason

    Wesley

Fortunately those two didn’t cost us much… maybe we can package them together in a trade🤞🏻

  8. Craig Says:

Brown should be running slants. That has always been his money route and could be still.

Right now Brady has too many targets and can’t get on the same page with them all. Brown’s speed is still an unknown, while Scotty is consistent.

Let Miller do the deep stuff, Brown do a slant, Godwin those little curls that get him open, and Evans can hang at the far end of the first down mark. It would build some consistency, which is badly needed.

  9. BradentuckeyBuc Says:

How quickly we forget that when we signed AB, Evans, Godwin, OJ, Gronk and Scotty where all banged up or out

  10. Zzbuc Says:

AB had a solid game today….

  11. SlyPirate Says:

Love the Bucs rediscovered Miller. AB should just be insurance for Mike and Godwin.

  12. firethecannons Says:

    Scotty is a future pawn

watching Taysom Hill getting back to back sacks fun! saints lose good football day!

  13. Emil Says:

Scotty is a one trick pony. Can’t do anything on screens, juke anyone, doesn’t fight for the ball the way AB does. No one likes AB as a person, but to suggest they are better with Scotty on the field is absurd.

  14. Issac haggins Says:

Brady missed 4 big wide open passes today , 2 or three were for 30 yards . Really really Poor game from him ……… Pleasefor the love of football Gods bench Devin White for a game ……… Winfield played really well , which is great because he was really starting to stink it up. Bunting also played well as did numerous Vets and Young Players but White and Winfield have been struggling and White is pretty much awful and needs to shut his flap and sit for a game ………..Minter is simply a more complete player !!

  15. Issac haggins Says:

Bench White and the D gets better !! He guessing and running his flap more than being a productive player ,,,,Minter makes this D Better !! White has to be sat down to get his game right .

  16. Issac haggins Says:

Bench White Now !! I can’t watch him any more !!

  17. Issac haggins Says:

White may be the next protected MCCoy , he’s not that good folks .

Of course Scotty was the 3rd option….it was third down….I don’t subscribe to the theory that AB has been a negative….

I have been stating and I will state it again that Brady is shaky early in games….that was obvious again today….and it’s been going on for a while….it has nothing to do with gameplan or WRs on the field….

I looks like it just takes him some time to get in a rhythm.

  20. Natron Says:

I know this is off subject, but, Lovie Smith was fired today as head coach at Illinois!

  21. Pewter Power Says:

I finally saw leftwich switch it up for once. It is a given that on third and short he’s going to do deep regardless of how inaccurate Brady is with his deep ball so obviously it failed early then saw them actually run on third and short which was my shocker of the game

  22. BucEmUp Says:

I dont disagree with the brown signing because we all knew how bad this offense would be if rvans and or godwin went down. However , Miller was becoming a key component to this offense up unitl Brown arrived. Lime Fournette, Brown should be here for depth, not to replace Miller. Scotty had one catch today and that is about 5 to 8 catches shy of what he deserves. Brown didnt put in the work or grind that Miller has and its a slap.in the face that he has gotten Millers share of targets. This game was barely won if you consider all.of the missed extra points and field goals by Dan Baily. Im glad they got the win but it was ugly, and the way Atlanta is playing if Julio is active this team better continue playing less zone coverage, continue feeding Jones and give Miller.more snaps. If the only reason Brown is getting more snaps.is because his contract is loaded with incentive based money that sends a bad messaage to the other 52 guys on the team.

Yes they got a win today but it wasnt pretty..Someone needs to send Dan Baily a Christmas card with a big thank you

Agree. Perhaps because as a senior citizen it takes me longer to get in a rhythm.

Whatever…I remember an 11PM New Anchor who waited until 10PM to get serious about writing her scripts creating unneeded enormous pressure. She claimed she needed that additional pressure. Maybe Brady likes the additional pressure subconsciously.

  24. Cajun 69 Says:

When the game is on the line AB will end up being much more important than you think Chill man

  25. stpetebucsfan Says:

Did you catch the celebration in the end zone. ME points to the sky and he and Scottie do a jumping bump…then Godwin does it and knocks tiny Scottie to the ground. LOL

You don’t realize how terribly tiny he is until he standing next to the other receivers.

Those were the days. Now everybody just reads off the same script sent from Fairfax, VA.

  28. Upthegut Says:

Looks like AB is becoming a version of Wes Welker/Julian Edelman for TB12.

  29. Potato Chip Says:

Every mistake Brady makes is magnified to the 100th degree, more than any other player in the league. He had a passer rating of 120.9 for that game and a nice QBR of 83.9. These people saying he had a “really really poor game” are just looking to criticize. I know stats aren’t everything, but come on. ” Really really poor” is just being ridiculously negative. He missed some throws, but ended up having a good game overall with 2 TDs and no picks aoong with the strong QBR and passer rating. I think y’all should just appreciate the fact that he’s lead this team ito be in a very good position at this point in the season, and let’s hope they can keep it rolling. I honestly am very optimistic.

Are you speaking from experience? You work in newsrooms getting their marching orders from Fairfax?

  32. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

They should get rid of brown before he’s a real problem!! I don’t care what you say or what you show me .. Evans, Goodwin and probably even Miller took that signing to heart and it messed with their heads!! I don’t care what they SAY I care how they have performed afterwards and you can tell it affected them because they are human beings!!! They were lighting it up at first and were working hard!!.. just to be spit on by appearing to the rest of the league in desperate enough need of a WR to get someone like that trash!!!
