Godwin Points To The Chiefs

December 1st, 2020

Chris Godwin says the Bucs’ growing pains are “unfolding in front of the world.”

All season, Joe and other fans have heard about how these pains are tied to the newness of Tom Brady and an offseason wiped out by The Sickness.

Joe gets it, but now it’s December. Joe likes to pretend August and September were the equivalent of spring practices and training camp, and October was the first month of the season adjustment? In that scenario, the Bucs offense should have been humming by November — except that’s when it took a step back.

Godwin spoke on Buccaneers Radio last night night and emphasized that it’s all still a work in progress and the Bucs are “still learning on the fly,” and that “it’s important to note we’re all still learning each other.”

In a moment that made Joe take pause, Godwin pointed to Chiefs, the Bucs’ opponent Sunday, and noted their offense has been together for years.

Godwin said the Bucs’ deep ball woes are mostly about timing and location. He gave a novice football fan a simple explanation of the intricacies required.

“The timing aspect of it, it’s like, the playcall has to be the right playcall, you know, But once the ball is snapped, Tom has to have a good feel for like when we, as receivers, are going to be in the area that we’re supposed to be,” Godwin said. “Regardless of what happens with the defense, we have to be in the spot basically he’s expecting us to be.”

He went on to take about the arching and velocity of the passes, pass blocking and that it’s just something that will improve over time.

Joe’s going to play optimist and say the Bucs offense should be running at top capacity from here forward, with everyone healthy now and a bye week to really identify and eliminate the November shortcomings.

    Run the ball with ROJO!!!!!!!

A notable play was Evans running his route when the linebacker covering him blitzed, instead of turning around he kept running his route instead of looking for the ball.

Post game Michael Clayton had a long rant about how Bucs receivers weren’t completing their routes. And he implied that that is what has led to many of the incompletions and some of the interceptions. Not sure how much of his rhetoric can be trusted, but he was a receiver so he knows the position. he was particularly hard on Mike Evans actually. He said that Evans kept cheating his routes and not running them the way they are designed. Again, not sure how much of that can be trusted since he obviously isn’t in possession of the playbook, but he seemed pretty sure of himself. Regardless it’s an interesting observation. He also noted that if Evans is cheating his routes, the younger receivers probably see that and to an extent emulate that as well. Food for thought if nothing else.

I’d it was just one offense then everyone would know it by now… But when you’re trying to implement two offenses and in a push-pull situation between the two this is what happens imo

    Run the freaking ball!!

    1st down. Run!

    2nd down. Run!

    3rd and short? Run again!!

2 TE. 3 TE. Extra Tackle in the gane.

    Run the ball!!!

Stop all this 5 WR madness!

    25 carries for Rojo!

    10 for Fournette!

    Run the freaking ball!!

  6. TOM Says:

Jimeny Christmas. Can anyone on the Bucs tell the truth? Its been lies, excuses & BS the whole season. Gee, were the Bucs the only team that didn’t have a training camp? Give me an effin break. Ever since the stupid Glazers fired Chucky its been the same crap year in & year out. This year isn’t any different. I don’t think this organization cares one bit about winning & losing. Change all the front office people, GM, coaches & players its always going to be this way. Losers, losers, losers.

  7. Casual Observer Says:

I will adopt your optimism too, Joe. I like Godwin’s comments. It is hard to believe that three better wide receivers have ever been on an NFL team. These guys are outstanding (pro-bowl level) WRs. They have two weeks to get the passing game sharp enough to win the next 4.

  8. UKBuccaneer Says:

Teacherman, when was the last time a genuine ‘3 yards and a cloud of dust’ offense won a super bowl?

  9. Allbuccedup Says:

There is a reason BA’s only won one playoff game. Just look at the Saints,Rams and Chiefs game all playoff teams. Although the Rams are starting to look a little shaky.

  10. Tj Says:

Come on people KC is the best team in the NFL nothing to be ashamed of

  11. Tm Says:

They should run the same offense tom ran on his old team short passes run the ball deenk and dunk short passes then go deep give tom time its justed that simple

  12. lowercaseg Says:

    Rojo isn’t the answer.

  13. unbelievable Says:

Runs to the outside instead of always up the middle.

    Play action on first down.

    Slants and intermediate routes.

    Well timed deep shots.

This chit ain’t hard. You’ve got Mike Evans, Antonio Brown, Chris Godwin, Gronk and Brate plus RoJo and supporting guys like Miller, Johnson, Fournette… Simply no excuses to struggle this much with all that talent.

A notable play was Evans running his route when the linebacker covering him blitzed, instead of turning around he kept running his route instead of looking for the ball. That’s what Romo was talking about with the hot routes. Receivers and Qb have to identify the blitzer.

  15. Mike in LOL Says:

How is RoJo now the answer? Typically in games where he has gotten a lot of touches he has performed very well and we win.

  16. Mike in LOL Says:

    Not* the answer

  17. Wideleftandright Says:

Romo could get 20 plus touches in a game and probably do pretty well should we ever get a lead.
Slow starts have driven this team to it’s ucs current record.
At this point,if they dont get the offense fixed and kick up a pass rush there will be no playoffs for this edition of th

Seems like a better balance would help. 25 to 30 rushes. Gronk is still a force keep him 5to 8 yards as a safety valve. Tooooooo many deep routes. I believe they will start to play better if arians doesn’t screw it ip
