“Go Deep, Scotty”

December 18th, 2020

Big play Scotty.

It appears Scotty Miller, at least in the eyes of the Bucs, was not born to catch short passes.

Every once in a while, Pro-Football-Reference.com pumps out some current stats on social media. They did this today as a matter of fact. Joe found it pretty cool.

No one runs more yards downfield to catch a pass in the NFL than Miller, park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking Bucs quarterback Tom Brady’s favorite bombs-away weapon.

As you can read below, no other player runs a deeper before the catch than Miller.

Miller stretches the field like no other Buccaneer. This is why some folks think signing furniture-tossing, bicycle-throwing Bucs receiver Antonio Brown hurt the Bucs’ offense.

Arians always counts on a player to stretch the field to open things up for other receivers. Think Breshad Perriman last year. And look at what kind of seasons Mike Evans and Chris Godwin had.

With Brown taking away many of Miller’s snaps, that condenses the field, so the critics say. And that hurts the offense.

It’s an interesting theory and Joe isn’t sure it’s wrong.

But think about it, if Brown had a clean slate and no offseason baggage, if you had gotten wind that the Bucs had a chance to pick up Brown but didn’t because of Miller’s presence, you’d likely want someone locked up.

Joe isn’t sure adding Brown was a bad move. But it is interesting to know that right about the time the Bucs signed Brown, the offense started sputtering.

And Joe’s not a big coincidence kinda guy.

No, AB did not hurt the Bucs. He had helped. BTW, AB was open deep and TB missed him.

My God, one or two successful plays to Miller, and these premature ejaculations are ridiculous. Miller is good, but he’s soft. AB is HOF.

  2. Pablo Says:

But idiot Byron Leftwhich only had him play 5 snaps last week smh

  3. unbelievable Says:

It’s amazing the Byron and Araians haven’t figured out that they are both capable of stretching the field… even at the same time! Gasp!

  4. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Hit him in stride with shallow crossing patterns like Warner did on his Greatest Show on Tuff days

  5. Wesley Says:

His speed is why he’s on this roster.

  6. Zzbuc Says:

I guess that’s the biggest reason why he is here….. The kid is fast!!
On more than one laughed about scooter.
    He is good!

  7. windbaggery Says:

Brown is expendable. We gotta re-sign Godwin.

  8. catcard202 Says:

Miller has the speed to gain separation on NFL DB’s…Which is nice to take the top off on BA’s bread&butter vertical shots, 4-5 times a game…But would like to see that 4.33 speed used on some jet sweeps / quick screens a couple times a game & see if he can find a seam.

  9. Dewey Selmon Says:

They signed Ab to do Ab things and didn’t realize they already had a different version in Miller. At least the coaches realized it and are starting to
get the ball to Scooter more.

  10. mark2001 Says:

As someone said…likely Joe…Brown was out of football for quite a while…and it might take him time to work back in. It did Gronk. I expect to see him used more as we go along.

  11. Ftmyersbuc Says:

AB is ballin. He just plays the 3rd reciever position. Put AB in the x position and he’d light it up. Hes a 3rd down chain mover at this juncture. And hes got hof hands, the guy is gonna break one of those 5 yd catches soon, watch. You see how he fights for yards more than the other recievers. ME and Godwin only fight like that near the end zone

  12. Don_RyJo(e) Says:

Not just speed, but chemistry! Brady and Miller just click.

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Miller is the only one fast enough to jive with Brady.

Hard to believe we are only 2 games behind the Saints. After all we’ve seen.

Sure would be nice if they lost the next 3!

  14. Alanbucsfan Says:

Right about the time Bucs faced Saints, Rams and Chiefs….
Right about the time Marpet was out with concussion….
Miller is not better than AB.

  15. Will Says:

How bout using Miller on short stuff and see if the speed can get him to the house. He might be faster than AB but he doesn’t have the skills that AB has. He can and will learn from him though and that will be great for us in the long run. I watched Miller’s highlight tape from college and although he was playing against lesser talent he did have some moves. I have yet to see any jitter to his game on this level and someone let him know if the ball is under thrown and the DB has a better shot at it then him offensive pass interference is appropriate instead of allowing an INT.

  16. Michael Says:

Scotty Miller runs a 4.33 40 to compare him to Antonio Brown regarding speed is a joke! Brown in his best days ran a 4.5!! Wake up the guy is averaging 8 yards per reception and Scotty 16 yards per reception! Brown has not helped one bit

  17. Ben the GA Buc Says:

No one is saying Miller is better than AB. Just that AB coming in and needing targets was taking away from an offense already clicking.

Again, AB is a world class talent but he’s complicated everything since he got here. Miller has some great hands to go along with his speed. It’s nice to have but with so many mouths to feed, plus running the ball with RoJo, it’s far more complex than it needs to be.

  18. BucEmUp Says:

With Millers speed, ability and heart he should be the x factor on this offense. Deep, short put him wherever. Make defenses worry about where you are moving him around play to play and that will open up the other guys. Just sending him deep when he’s in the game is a perfect example of how out of touch this offensive coaching is. Brady would haver a field day with Miller if he had his way out there.

Playoffs approaching and I have this gut feeling they will sh!t all over themselves first round. Lets be honest our offense looks like crap and Dan Baily got the game ball last week for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers!

  19. Tackleblockwin Says:

Put Scotty and AB outside and let ME and CG do business inside.

  20. Anonymous Says:

But he’s white he can’t run fast

  21. Mike t Says:

    But he’s white

  22. Will Says:

This OC wouldn’t know how to use Tyreek Hill. He’d want everything to happen organically instead of moving him into different spots and getting the ball in his hands quick as possible. Miller has speed how many reverses have we run with him or jet sweeps? BL needs help expanding the play book.

  23. Potato Chip Says:

Schedule had a tough stretch versus several teams that had good pass rush after Brown signed. That’s it for the coincidence.

  24. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

Miller’s role is to stretch the field and that opens things up underneath – everyone gets the concept of that.

BUT AB puts Miller on the bench and simultaneously takes catches away from ME and Godwin – thus not letting them get into a rhythm. In addition, having Scotter on the bench shrinks the coverage area for the defense. THAT is why Brown is not a good fit. No one is taking anything away from his ability as a great WR.

AB is just not a good fit.

  25. Alanbucsfan Says:

AB is not a good fit – that’s ridiculous- AB is drawing double coverage when he’s on the field and he’s more physical than Miller. Miller stretches field and is a good player/ but AB creates more problems for opposing defense.
We have yet to see AB’s dominant game, which is coming…

  26. Cobraboy Says:

I chuckle when casual fans complain about too much talent on the field at once.

  27. m0j0 Says:

It’s a good problem to have with AB and Miller. We need to give them both reps and put them good position to succeed.

  28. orlbucfan Says:

Methusaleh Brady needs to get off the trip about favoring his home boys. I ‘m talking Gronkowski and Brown even when ME13 and CG14 are wide open. It better start changing tomorrow. And throw to Miller, too. Julio Jones will miss this game. Geriatric Brady has no excuse not to win in a cakewalk.

  29. Blu Says:

This coaching staff does not uses players correctly. Therr should definitely be a couple plays each game where you go 5 wide with godwin, brown, evans, gronk and miller. Especially on like 1st down or something where you need to get the ball out quick, or only need like 3 or 4 yards. You think they would be struggling to get these guys the ball in NE, KC, SF, LAR? Those coaching staffs knownhow to use players and get them in advantageous positions. Whether it be motion, split stacks, pick plays, trick plays. You see a pick play once everg 5 games here, barely any motion. Should be motion damn near every play here.

  30. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

LOL, Miller is not better than AB.
One big catch, and the premature ejaculators go off.
AB is a sure hall of famer, Miller is just good.
