Bucs Have A Second Field Goal Specialist

December 16th, 2020

Weapon-status revealed.

Keep this in mind for the playoffs.

Kicker Ryan Succop is nailing field goals at a 92 percent clip this season, soothing fans scarred by years of horrible Bucs kicking, and Succop is conjuring memories of Connor Barth’s nearly perfect 2011 season.

However, Succop does not have a big booming leg. Through 12 seasons, his career-longest field goal is 54 yards.

But the Bucs do have a guy ready to step up and drill a potential game-winner, Bucco Bruce Arians told WFLA-TV yesterday. And that’s punter Bradley Pinion. Speaking about the Bucs ending the first half against the Vikings with a “Hail Mary” throw to Rob Gronkowski, Arians admitted that he considered sending Pinion out for a bomb of a kick but was too concerned about the Vikings catching a short attempt and returning it.

“Bradley Pinion can hit a 65-yarder,” Arians said confidently. Sunday’s attempt, if the Bucs went for the field goal, would have been 65 yards exactly.

This tells Joe the Bucs have been practicing Pinion drilling long range kicks. He’s the best in the game at getting touchbacks, but field goals are a very different animal.

Joe’s getting excited by visions of Pinion lining up at Lambeau Field in the NFC title game for a 59-yarder to send the Bucs to the Super Bowl.

65 yds. in dense Tampa air is difficult.

That’s funny, I have dreams of Aaron Rodgers breaking down and crying in the second quarter in January in Green Bay.
