Jimmie Giles On Arians-Brady

Bruce Arians chatter from a Bucs legend

So it seems like everybody and his brother is trying to figure out why Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians calls out park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, jet ski-losing, handshake-stiffing quarterback Tom Brady when Brady plays badly.

Joe has always thought it’s Arians being old school. Back in the 20th century, coaches and managers called a spade a spade. If you sucked, the coach or manager would say so. Why hide the obvious?

As Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog once said when asked why he is so blunt about a player’s performance in the press, and if that might hurt the player’s feelings, Herzog replied, “If they need a friend, go buy a dog.”

Asked a very similar question, Hall of Fame basketball coach Bobby Knight said, “What about my feelings?”

Though Knight had a very healthy ego, he was no dummy. Often, when Knight would go mental so often away from the court (he was mental always on the court), it was because he had a good team and was trying to take the spotlight, and therefore the pressure, off his team.

And Bucs Ring of Honor tight end Jimmy Giles believes that is exactly what Arians is doing when he raps Brady’s knuckles with a ruler publicly after losses.

Speaking to Clark Judge of SI.com, Giles explained this is Arians’ way of taking heat off Brady.

“Everybody’s getting on ‘Coach’ about getting on Tom Brady, right?” he asked.

Check.

“Ever thought that ‘Coach’ might be doing that for a reason?”

Um, not really. So what is it?

“He’s taking the heat off Tom Brady,” Giles said, “because if he didn’t take the heat they would go after Tom Brady. And he’s the kind of coach who’s going to get on whoever to make his team better. If everybody sees that ‘Coach’ can get on Tom Brady that means: If you don’t do your job, he’s going to get on you, too.”

This is the third person Joe has heard in recent weeks say Arians, in concert with Brady, is doing a reverse Bobby Knight. When Knight was at Indiana, he would privately warn his best players he would treat them harshly in practice to both motivate and take pressure off lesser players.

One of those sources is Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young, who claims his source is someone in Brady’s inner circle.

Look, if Brady was really ticked off about all of this, don’t you think at least his agent would be barking to his favorite reporters in Boston?

  7. gotbbucs Says:

Doesn’t change the fact that the offense isn’t doing what it should be.

It shouldn’t even be a question of whether they’re going to pick up a 3rd and short. The biggest surprise should be when they have an offensive series that doesn’t result in points.

  8. Bruce Blahak Says:

Yes, why isn’t Wilder in the ring? Nickerson too…Cotney and Wood and some originals belong up there too.

  9. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Roy T,

I believe you are right about the unrealist.
They don’t drug test at the exclamation point store.

Jimmie Giles taking the guy from the Chicago S, I think Fencek, and Doug Williams coming to his defense. Good memory. Loved those guys.

BA throws TB12 under the bus to save him from critics? Are you serious?

  12. Red86 Says:

He need to share the blame on who ever responsible for offensive play calling and Todd B. for putting Defensive End in coverage against #1 and #2 receivers. This is the old Adrain Clayborne days of putting him in coverage. On obvious passing down and you are not blitzing, use all linebackers or nickel set.

Feed Rojo, Fournette, and McCoy the ball for once. Gee.

  13. Darin Says:

    I agree with Jimmy.

I’ve been telling you this Joe since you got this blog. Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback that ever lived stop running your mouth about him and start looking a little bit under the current to what actually is. Thank you sir

  17. Ge Fit Says:

Hey why do you describe always describe Brady that way when you start your column? It was cute in the beginning it sucks now.

  18. Eric Says:

Arians, needs to stop running a 1980’s offense and scheme it up. There’s not enough movement and the defense knows exactly what’s going to happen. Look at Sean peytons offense drew Brees doesn’t launch it deep 10-15 times a game that’s not how you win unless you have tyreek hill getting 1 on 1 coverage. This offense is loaded with talent but the o line isn’t good enough to hold up for 7 seconds to risk it or biscuit ( dumbest offense strategy in the league). Brady would be 11-0 in Peytons offense. This is on arians and it’s not going to end well and if Brady leaves the bucs are toast because he will be wearing gold and black and make you wish he never left.
