White No Pro Bowler Yet

November 9th, 2020

Good, hardly great (yet).

Let’s just call it like we see it.

Devin White is excellent against the run, inconsistent on the blitz (superb sometimes, invisible other times) and awful defending the pass.

Joe has tried to stay quiet when he hears announcers call White the next superstar of the NFL. But White is no Lavonte David.

Joe really, really wants White to be a great all-around player. Right now he’s just great in one area: stopping the run.

It’s pretty obvious that teams gameplan to throw at White. This just in: teams don’t gameplan to target defensive superstars.

Can White be *that* guy? Sure he can. But after watching him get owned tonight by an average tight end and a two-bit, poor man’s Tim Tebow backup quarterback pretending to be a tight end/fullback, can we hold off on the superstar talk until, you know, White can handle a slow tight end?

white is very active and vocal but gets exposed often too…

    can’t cover a TE

  2. gp Says:

But, But…. What about the 100 million contract he envisioned in his future before he was drafted?

  3. Mike Johnson Says:

Very sad performance by the team on Sunday night. Saints now own the division again. They were ready. It seemed like we were on the field..waiting for a recount..LOL

  4. gp Says:

    Bad comparison Mike
The refs didn’t win this game for the saints, we gave it to them!

That is a very fair assessment so far in his young career. He stated on the Podcast wirth Ira and Brooks that he does much better when teams run more. So if you let the QB have crumpets and tea back there like tonight, then Devin will continue to struggle. Hopefully for Buc fans he will get alot better. But right now, Joe your assessment is very to the point. GO BUCS!!!!!

  6. Bosch Says:

You are right. He needs to be better defending the pass. But I have far more confidence he can overcome this weaknes than Q Alex with his ridiculous poor angles on tackles

This just in… when your db’s are non stop playing 15 yards off the LOS and still getting blown by, maybe you should change your game plan… 3 games later no less… Put the cornerbacks on the line of scrimmage and let them bang the WR’s off their routes

  8. NCFlorIdiot Says:

Let the cornerbacks bang the WR’s off the line and then run with them! I’m no expert, just a typical fan, but WTF! Put the WR’s on their a$$ before the QB can even look at them!

    Coaching!

Mike Smith, excuse me I mean Todd Bowles was playing that SCARED prevent defense tonight. Why do you line up and concede first downs. So it is smart to let a Hall of Fame QB sit back there and have tea and crumpets, and just take you apart. Todd Bowles known for press coverage and pressure on the QB, what happened. How did they beat A Rodgers, he was pressured more by the Bucs than anyone else. Why coach scared, play scared strategy? No pressure on Brees put the defense on a death sentence. Hopefully this changes quick. GO BUCS!!!!

  11. Rod Munch Says:

White is still young and I think he’ll get better in pass coverage, but he’s no Kwon Alexander – someone who the Saints traded a conditional 5th to get while picking up his prorated $800k salary.

I think there is a time warp going on as this is clearly a post I made every week when Mike Smith was here.

  13. Will Says:

@August I’ve been wondering the same for a few games now. Also have to wonder with all the ex pro athletes we have on staff why wouldn’t someone say that’s straight up a dumb strategy against Brees. Heck we drafted press corners and continually line them up 12yds off the ball and they still get ran by. Smh

  14. NCFlorIdiot Says:

The hard part is a$$ whipping Green Bay 2 weeks ago (Ecstatic), then returning to barely beating NYG (Normal Bucs), to getting face f*ck@d by the Taints! (Lost Decade all over again)

  15. Bucfandan Says:

Let’s not forget that donavan smith is a bum who can’t hold water too. Maybe next year we can draft another offensive lineman. I feel like our defense got put into a lot of bad situations with the spot of the ball but still no excuse white played sorry and our secondary got exposed due to lack of pressure from our front seven

  16. gotbbucs Says:

White is awful in coverage. Every team is going to pick on him until he improves. He’s teetering on needing to come out of the game on 3rd down.

  17. Hodad Says:

You nailed it Joe, White is horrible in coverage, Shaq isn’t very good at it, and you saw how well JPP catches. White should try to get to the QB 99% of the time. So should the others. We had our best pass rushers playing coverage all night.

  18. Bucsfanman Says:

We got out-coached by TWO teams last night…The Saints and ourselves.
It was not a good look.

  19. Bobby M. Says:

He’s a cheaper Kwon Alexander. Hyper aggressive but often out of position.

  20. rrsrq Says:

I think that nobody misses Vita Vea like LVD and D. White, except maybe Todd Bowles. Can’t do as much when he eats up blockers for everybody else to eat.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

While I agree that White has a way to go with pass coverage……I fail to see how you can use TEs & Taysom Hill as examples of that.

Jared Cook caught 2 passes last night and White helped him fumble 1…

    Taysom Hill Caught 1 pass….

  22. #1bucfan Says:

Agree joe. He’s gotta do better in coverage. He’s almost there. Most of the time he’s right there when the receiver ketches the ball. Just needs to get a hand on it or be a hair earlier. Feel like he’s getting close. He also had a few missed tackles. Bad game by everyone. Shaq got his sack fumble tho

  23. 813bucboi Says:

    DW+COVERAGE=TOAST

    GO BUCS!!!!

  24. Wayne PEREZ Says:

Devin is a legend in his own mind he cant pass defend to save his ass

  25. Pewter Power Says:

Mr I want to be the highest paid linebacker ever. They blitz him so much because he’s only useful don’t that and stopping the run. Has sucked against the pass all year which matters because teams don’t run on us. Coaches fault they can’t adjust to the players weakness because they pretend they don’t exist

  26. Doctor_Berto Says:

Starting to look like Josh Allen would have been the better pick with our aging, expensive, unproductive defensive line.

  27. alaskabuc Says:

Cool ate White’s lunch yesterday. He’s like Kwon 2.0, tons of energy, great tackler, terrible in pass coverage.

  28. Natron Says:

JPP sure could have used those fingers he lost from that firecracker accident last night

  29. Capt.Tim Says:

    White?
    Yeah, him too.
But for the second straight week, a team has centered its passing game on Jameel Dean.
Dean was lucky in NY. They missed some long throws against him.
Brees didn’t. If Dean doesn’t stop falling for double moves, and biting on fakes that leave his man alone running deep, then he’s gonna be watching Ryan Smith play the 3rd Corner
