Chris Simms’ Top-10 QBs

November 20th, 2020

Leaves Tom Brady off list.

Former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms has a very small bone to pick with the current Bucs quarterback.

Simms, now a talking head at NBC Sports, produced his midseason Top-10 Quarterbacks. And one of his Bucs successors is off the list (currently). That would be park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, jet ski-losing Tom Brady.

Oh, Simms likes Brady a lot. A lot. In some respects Simms thinks Brady is sharp as a tack. But a top-10 NFL quarterback? Not now.

Simms explained on his podcast “Unbuttoned.”

“Brady was up there. Brady was up there,” Simms responded to questioning why Brady was not included in his top-10. “Brady, hey, the mind, the decision-making, I mean [he’s] throwing the ball down the field as well as ever.

“But the thing I will say too, hey, he’s on an all-star team. Alright? I mean the team is awesome. It’s awesome.”

Simms added that if one suggested Brady is the reason why the Bucs are not undefeated, one could build a logical argument.

“He’s lost games for them this year,” Simms said. “You can look at every game they lost and if you could pick a culprit, again, you could pick Tom Brady.

“The Saints game was bad. Both times. And then the Bears game was, ‘Oh, Wait I Thought It Was Third Down Game.'”

Simms also added he isn’t sure Brady can make plays when a play isn’t there. “That’s important to me,” Simms said.

And if you look at Simms’ list (see below) you will notice each of his top-10 quarterbacks have mobility. Brady isn’t all that mobile (but it’s not like he is immobile which was a knock on him in New England).

The way Joe looks at it, while Joe Burrow is a damn good rookie quarterback, not sure any team would want Burrow for 2020 over Brady.

Down the road? Of course, but in November 2020, Joe finds it dubious anyone would choose Burrow over Brady.

Simms added on his podcast after explained why he omitted Brady, that he expected some blowback for this decision. “I knew this would be a talking thing.”

  2. Mike Says:

Um, yeah, Brady should be in that top 10 for sure.

  3. August 1976 Buc Says:

Brady is like 4th in TD’s right now. I like Chris, he is pretty sharp but maybe Chris has lingering effects from his playing days. Sounds like “Dain Bramage” to me. Brady is top ten by sheer experience let alone transforming a losing culture, not just in name, but with on the field results. His top ten here should be titled “Dain Bramage” and good for the bottom of the bird cage lol. GO BUCS!!! KEEP TOM ALIVE FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP DRIVE!!!!!

  4. Goldenbuc Says:

The last two should be replaced by Carr and Brady. No doubt.

You could argue Brady is as good as Lamar Jackson. But if you take Simms’ statement at face value that he values “making a play” when none is available, can sort of understand why he has Jackson ahead of Brady.

Not saying Joe would take Jackson over Brady.

  6. The Red Mirage Says:

Two rookies with losing records are better than Brady this season? Ridiculous. You play to Win the game! Hello!!

  7. Acyrocks Says:

Is this the guy who said before that he was better than Brady?

  8. Pete I Says:

Taysom Hill Starting over Jameis Winston… Wow what an indictment!

  9. Robert Says:

The defense and scheme lost those saints games……Simms is fos on this one…..except for maybe TB locking in on gronk

  10. Robert Says:

    And Manning wasnā€™t mobile……guess heā€™s subpar. Lol

  11. Joe Says:

    And Manning wasnā€™t mobileā€¦ā€¦guess heā€™s subpar. Lol

Manning is no longer in the league. Simms’ list is who he thinks are the top-10 QBs as of the third week of November 2020.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Brady is better than the two rookies…..right now….

One does have to wonder what those rookies could do with our roster.

  13. AKicknTheBucNuts Says:

LOL! Isn’t it great to be kicking around if your quarterback should be in a top 10 list a week before Thanksgiving, rather than kicking around the top 10 draft picks we could get?

  14. Allbuccedup Says:

Why is Rodgers and Tannehill on there they are one dimensional QB like Brady?

  15. Deminion Says:

that’s been my only thing with Tom you have to play a certain way and be precise. With that being said tom is at least top 4.

  16. August 1976 Buc Says:

If Taysom the “The Gadget man” starts, I still do not see him running an offense for 70-80 plays. Jameis is going to get his fair share if not most of the snaps. Just how many passes has T Hill thrown in his career. Is it 18 or something. So for me it is Sean Payton playing bait and switch with T Hill, just like many sales cons. Sean is not going to give anything away until kickoff on Sunday. There is no way the Saints are going 5-0 like last year. The Falcons are going to score some points, and the pressure will be on the Saint offense to produce. The Game on Sunday Jameis looked very much the same. He threw a pick right to a player in the middle of the field that was dropped, he almost fumbled, and also did what he does- tried to play a hard nosed running back, and not sliding at all. He hit some easy passes, but struggled again in the redzone and was sacked multiple times. So what I saw for a half was the same player he was in Tampa. If he does not improve, he is going to lose a few. That opens the door wide for the Bucs.

  17. Tampabuscsbro Says:

    LOL

I guess if there is one person who knows good QBing then it’s Chris Simms. He would know better then anyone apparently.

  18. Logan Says:

Chris come on man. Of you truly watched the games we lost, you know that everyone was terrible. The defense was awful in the last Saint loss. Offensive playcalling has been abysmal at times. Special team’s has caused blocked FGā€™s, and if it’s not kicked through the endzone long kickoff returns. Yes, Brady screwed up on the loss downs, but many times heā€™s the reason the Bucs stay in games and pull them out. Last year everyone said the Bucs don’t win because of Winston and his turnovers and I agree, but now that we are winning we get told that the losses are on Brady??? Come on man.

Don’t get me started on the fact that you have Herbert and Burrow-both good young players-ahead of Brady when they have losing records. In the end it’s the number in the win column that count as the real stat.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

“The way Joe looks at it, while Joe Burrow is a damn good rookie quarterback, not sure any team would want Burrow for 2020 over Brady.”

I’d take Burrow in a heartbeat over Tom Brady right now. This team is good enough to make the playoffs with Burrow or Brady. BUT … Burrow’s got what, say 20 years ahead of him? Can’t say that about Tom.

  20. Joe Says:

Burrowā€™s got what, say 20 years ahead of him?

Not talking about 2040. Talking about the present-day, November 2020. Even the quote you used from Joe specifies 2020.

  21. Cannon Says:

“Simms also added he isnā€™t sure Brady can make plays when a play isnā€™t there. ”

This, right here, is about the only knock on Brady. Ironically, its also one of the only things you can tip your hat to with regards to our previous QB.

  22. unbelievable Says:

His point about ā€œmaking a play when itā€™s not thereā€ is 100% valid. Brady canā€™t scramble, and canā€™t do much to extend plays.

That said, Simms is placing way too much importance on that. Brady is still a far better QB than Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, Kyler Murray or Deshaun Watson. Like would any of you trade Brady for one of them? I surely would not (at least not this year)

  23. D-Rome Says:

    Clown show!

Tom Brady is having a better year than Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow.

  24. Buczilla Says:

For such a smart, knowledgeable, informed, entertaining guy, Simms sure does come up with some bullish!t lists. šŸ˜œ

  25. Anonymous Says:

Maannnm SHUT UP CHRIS. Your just pissed he wears the pewter and red better than you ever did ya bum!

  26. SufferingSince76 Says:

Agree with Robert. The game plan for the Saints game was god awful. What the heck were they thinking?

  27. stpetebucsfan Says:

I think Brady’s earned the top ten this year with his production. The Bucs certainly DO have talent but they have a tradition of sucking out loud!

One could make a case to lay the Bears loss on Brady.

But the Saints? C’mon man! The ENTIRE team sucked against the Saints. Our OL played like a bunch of pansies…no run game and Brady scrambling for his life.

The D never left the locker room. The coaches never seemed able to pull their heads out of their rectums…no the Saints loss isn’t on anybody it’s on everybody.

  28. James in Memphis Says:

Chris is just not a very good talent evaluator.. He’s been Stevie Wonderish on a lot of his predictions and analysis in his time at NBC…

  29. chickster Says:

    Sims is a bum

  30. Adam Lakers Carolla Says:

Real men do not use “LOL” or hail from st pete

  31. Anonymous Says:

Chris Simms – will always like him for his toughness, but he is FAR from being a QB guru (he’s salty and biased). He kept screaming about Tua being crap. Look who’s playing well in Miami. And blaming Brady for losses is like blaming someone catching the Rona because they breathe. Lazy analysis.

All of our losses have been from a lack of team play. Yes, Brady should have known it was 4th down, but we didn’t lose because of that. We played like crap the whole game.

Also, Chris will always be remembered for getting dressed down by Gruden.

  32. lambchop Says:

    @Cannon,

Brady can make plays when things break down, but he doesn’t do it consistently because he gets rid of the ball if the play isn’t there. That’s confidence in his ability to get it done on the next play. Something our ex-QB could never grasp.

  33. Glenn shippre Says:

I have heard simms talk about whats wrong with brady before. Is it jealouey or just that you really sucked as a quarterback. I have seen games were brady spent the entire game being bounced off the turf but yet he still could have wob the games.
