Bucs Reality

November 19th, 2020

No worries for Joe Gilbert.

Those who regularly enjoy “The Ira Kaufman Podcast” know Ira has a thing for an offensive line coach.

The name screams Hollywood: Dante Scarnecchia. The long-time Patriots offensive line coach is a close confidant of Bill Belicheat and he was damn good at his job.

Scarnecchia is to Ira what Rachel Watson is to Joe. Ira just loves this guy, Scarnecchia. But maybe he has been usurped by another offensive line coach?

Enter Mike Sando of The Athletic. Sando listed the biggest worry of each NFL team and then studied whether it is based in reality.

For the Bucs, and more specifically for park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, jet ski-losing Bucs quarterback Tom Brady, the worry is that Brady takes too much of a beating.

The worry: Tom Brady takes too many hits in Bruce Arians’ offense. Sando examines.

In-season reality: Brady has operated from a clean pocket 74 percent of the time, sixth-highest in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus. That’s a higher rate than Brady enjoyed during most of his recent seasons in New England. However, there have been games when Brady took too many hits and seemed to miss having receivers out of the backfield as quick outlets.

So Ira raves about this Scarnecchia but Sando seems to imply that Joe Gilbert, the guy in charge of the Bucs’ offensive line, is getting more out of his front-five. Interesting.

And it sure seems as though when the Bucs have Brady under center and in a two-tight end formation, and the Bucs have at least a threat of a run game, Brady not only enjoys protection but the offense hums.

Maybe some respect from Ira is due on his next pod?

I’m hoping that ROJO’s confidence took a major boost last week with that 98-yard TD scamper. If so, he may give the Bucs the run game they need this week to keep the Rams D on their toes and give Brady more time to locate his targets on passing plays. Fingers crossed. Please don’t let this be a repeat of the Saint’s game. That would suck so much, I shouldn’t even be thinking about it.

this game is a huge test against donald, floyd and that line. we have been owned on both sides of the ball in the trenches by the saints but those games this team was just woefully unprepared or something. hopefully it doesnt happen again and i wouldnt expect it. but the coaches need to realize against good defenses we need good protection. we will go as brady (offensive line) goes.

I see where Aaron Donald got 4 of his 9 sacks in one game, against Washington. Do the opposite of what “The Football Team” did.
