“What He Learned Watching Practice, I Don’t Think It’s Going To Help Him Much In This One”

October 21st, 2020

“This should be my freakin’ 19th season coaching this %$&’n team. Bruce Arians is the fifth guy to steal my gig. I winning this damn game and mailing Glazer the game ball.”

Bitter, Glazer-jilted Chucky should have a unique advantage as head coach of the Raiders, the Bucs’ opponent on Sunday night in Las Vegas.

For years as an analyst for Monday Night Football, Chucky was welcomed to team practices as a member of the broadcast crew. And he got to sit down 1-on-1 with coaches and coordinator and quarterbacks (actually breathing together with them in the same room mask-free).

That means Chucky spent a lot of time with Bucco Bruce Arians when he coached a contending Arizona Cardinals team, and Todd Bowles when he was head coach of the Jets (2015-2018), and Tom Brady with the Belicheats.

Arians said today that he enjoyed building a relationship with Chucky through those encounters.

Joe asked Arians whether he thought he might have revealed too much.

Arians smirked and said, “No,” he was just accommodating the media, not dropping his football pants.

“What [Gruden] learned watching practice, I don’t think it’s going to help him much in this one,” Arians quipped.

Joe loves thinking of Chucky pulling out his covert recordings and notes of those meetings and trying to figure out how to avenge his surprise firing by Team Glazer in mid-January of 2009 — that started with Chucky taking a phone call at a Westchase restaurant on a cool Friday evening.

Yes, Joe thinks there’s a great chance Chucky will outsmart himself on Sunday night.

I rewatched the Raiders Dhiefs game, both teams have a ton of offensive weapons. This guy’s pretty smart, 10 days to prep and I’m sure he’s done even more than that with our D, who’s been mostly the same players. I bet ol chucky’s got something up his sleeve. Bucs can’t afford to have any let down to win this one on the road. Raiders have beaten a few good teams this year.

    Chiefs

  3. 813bucboi Says:

we all saw what happened when we play BUC BALL….

    simple as that….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  4. SufferingSince76 Says:

Chucky may want revenge, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to get it. The Bucs defense will scramble Carr’s brain just like they did Rodgers’. Raiders defense is average at best. Bucs should be able to take care of business if they don’t make too many mistakes.

  5. TampaTown Says:

We cannot underestimate what Gruden will have waiting for us. He does do a great job of figuring out a teams weakness. We gotta be up and ready for this and not fall for any tricks or stunts. That was the key to beating the Raiders in the SuperBowl

  6. EA Says:

I’m confident Brady can outfox gruden in this one, just because you can predict it doesn’t mean you can stop it.

  7. Bobby M. Says:

Honestly….Arians “system” is well documented, I dont think Gruden has any unique insight on the offense. I do expect Gruden to utilize delayed plays…like draws, screens, pitches to WRs….I think that will be Gruden’s counter to our attacking defense. Try to use our aggressiveness against us. I think a simple pump fake could give our CBs problems.

  8. Buc1987 Says:

    Bucs 34 Raiders31.

Last second Succop FG for the win!

  9. Mitch Says:

I think this week is a real opportunity for the Bucs offense to go off. I read from Greg Auman that the raiders defense has given up 30 points in 4/5 games this season and rank 22nd or worse in every statistical category. Maybe another 40 point game.

    i think you’re right…

screen hurt us every game vs the saints and the bears hurt us with draws and wheel routes….

i think the raiders will try make DW cover the RB out the back field often…he struggles in pass coverage…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  11. Howard Cosell Says:

    Oh the Drama!!

    Howard is torn.
He loves the Bucs obviously, but he also loves and respects Gruden

  12. Hodad Says:

If we can stop their run game, I don’t see Carr beating us. He cracks when pressured, and with their starting LT out, he’s going to crack!

  13. Nick2 Says:

Chucky could have had this team but he played hard ball and got the $100 million deal. I agree he got screwed when he was let go but he could have had this team. I love Jon Gruden but that being said I hope Rojo runs ruffshod over the damn Raider defense!!! Lets pound the rock!! Gruden would appreciate an ass wooping like that 🙂

  14. Cannon Says:

I expect at least one tricky play from Chucky in this game.

I was looking at the stat’s in this morning’s paper (yeah, real old school, I know) and noticed one that stood out. The Bucs are number 1 in the NFC for net points (#points scored – #points given up) at +46. The Cardinals are only 1 point behind, but then there’s a significant fall off. At six games into the season, this suggests to me that the Buc’s offense is consistently putting up points, and the defense is consistently limiting scoring by their opponents. A really good combination. If they can keep this trend going for the remainder of the season, they will definitely be a SB contender.

I’m not worried at all about the raiders!! Unless he dramatically changes the way they have been playing ball then the bucs will eat their lunch … Mark it down!!! They are a decent team and probably a team that will win 10 games!! But they are not built on offense to go up against this defense and they are horrible at getting pressure and when you give Brady time he will win the game for you!! I don’t see the raiders having any chance!! Or the chiefs later in the season for that matter!!! The only thing I worry about in both those games is our corners sometimes struggle against really fast receivers!! They can’t have bunting lined up outside at all in either of those games!! It’s got to be Dean and Davis…. Aside from that our linebackers will crush their whole game plan bro!! Both teams!!! You’re not going to out speed this defense for the most part tho!! The offense this team will have a hard time against are the Titans and hard nosed BIG hard hitting offenses like them!!

Gruden is a good coach. I think he and Arians on the same level of coaching ability. As offensive minds – they are less than Andy Reid and Sean Payton but they are more than Dirk Koetter and Jason Garrett.

Then how much do the motivate. I think that they are both good motivators that probably as time wears on – both can get a little tiresome to the same group of guys.

Lastly, how well do they build a staff. Well I know Chucky had a great defensive coordinator for our Super Bowl season here in Tampa along with the great defense to match.

Not ready to say that Arians staff rates up to that old Buc’s staff but not heard anything outstanding about Gruden’s current staff either.

Having a feeling that coaching for this game is part of the picture but unlikely to make a difference. Gotta think that 70 percent of this next game will be on the players and their individual matchups and how the other team might exploit them. Which is then back to coaching of that 30 percent and I think both these guys will be looking for any advantage they can get.

When Cleanhouse says Vegas has a ton of offensive weapons, does he think that Josh Jacobs is going to exploit the Buc’s run defense – I lean a strong no.

Does he think that there are receivers on Vegas that are better than Julio Jones and Michael Thomas that we face that will exploit us. I say no to that as well but not as strong a no.

Is Waller at TE better than many TE’s we have faced and can exploit maybe a linebacker in coverage. Maybe the best possibility.

We will see in the end – since we have not matched up with these guys before.
