Tristan Wirfs No. 2

October 23rd, 2020

Disco dancing stud RT.

It sure seems like Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht hit a home run when he traded up to No. 13 and selected rookie right tackle Tristan Wirfs.

The cornfed Iowa product has not played like a rookie in any way. Yeah, he got toyed with a couple of times by Khalil Mack, including a one-armed bodyslam. Join the club, kid.

But in ranking where the top rookies stand as the NFL enters Week 7, Matthew Valdovinos has Wirfs ranked No. 2. In fact, Valdovinos thinks Wirfs is the best right tackle in the game, of any age, of any playing experience.

2. Tristan Wirfs, OT, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

This season, Tristan Wirfs has been the best right tackle in the NFL. Against an elite duo of edge rushers in Green Bay’s Preston Smith and Za’Darius Smith, Wirfs gave up zero sacks, zero pressures, and had zero penalties. Wirfs was the most athletic tackle in the 2020 NFL Draft class and was widely considered a player with massive upside. He’s managed to reach some of that upside six games into his NFL career with no signs of slowing down. Tampa Bay will have an elite offensive tackle on a rookie deal for the next three and a half years, as well as a fifth-year option.

The only rookie that Valdovinos thinks is playing better than Wirfs is Chase Young (who ironically, Wirfs never faced in college.)

The more Joe watches this Wirfs play, the more Joe is impressed. Who out there thought Wirfs would be playing at this high level so soon? He really only had one bad game (Chicago) and even that was more like three or four bad plays out of like 80 while facing an All-Pro linebacker.

In Valdovinos’ write up of Wirfs, he forgot to mention how Wirfs handled Cam Jordan in his very first NFL game.

However, Joe is starting to wonder about Wirfs. Has The Sickness messed with his mind so much he’s starting to crack and dance to disco songs?

(If the Red Chinese are really spying on Americans using TikTok video software, what might they say about Wirfs disco dancing? And is that a stain upon society?)

    *Cam Jordan

  2. BushidoEvans Says:

One of Licht’s most solid pick ups, that and the stable of DBs he’s stolen the past 3 drafts.

  3. adam from ny Says:

he’s currently offensive rookie of the year if the award went to a non skill position player

  4. Admiral Redbeard Says:

Hey Joe, have you been hanging out with Hunter Biden late night? Bucs moved up in the draft from 14 to 13 (not to 5), and Tristan faced Cam Jordan (not Newton) against the A’ints. lol

  5. Bobby M. Says:

The Bucs will have an elite LT on a rookie deal starting next year…..just watch.

Apparently Admiral deadbeard can’t read Joe.

  8. orlbucfan Says:

Admiral Redbeard must have copped off Hunter Biden. Joe wrote ‘13’ and ‘Cam Jordan’ in the read.

  9. Brooks Falzone Says:

I wish I could unsee that

andrew thomas was awful last year….lol…

    glad we got wirfs…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  13. Gettinthebucs Says:

They’ve definitely changed draft philosophy. You gotta draft freaks and coach them up. Jamel Dean and VV are perfect examples.

  14. Bucamania Says:

Wirfs is an absolute beast. Meanwhile Andrew Thomas (picked at 4) is rated as the worst pass blocking T in football.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

I am not at all surprised Wirfs is playing as he is.

I thought he was, by far, the best OL in the draft and was SHOCKED he fell to the Bucs. Shocked. I’ll bet Licht sported wood for a week.

I also would not be surprised if the Bucs flipped him to the left side in 2021.

  16. Teflon Don OG Says:

OL in the first round is never a sexy pick.. but damn sure we made this pick! after watching Thomas from the Giants last night and seeing the other two tackles with the Jets, and browns I’m glad Wirfs fell to us

  17. Billy Bob Bubba Says:

Recommendation for Joe Bucs fan. Do an article comparing Tristan Wirfs NFL performance with the other 3 top tackles taken in the 2020 draft up to this point

  18. Tampabuscsbro Says:

    It’s amazing

Look at the drafts we had from 2014-2017 they were average (2015) to atrocious.

Look at our last 3 drafts, those players are outright studs in comparison.

  19. Allbuccedup Says:

Wirfs and Wills were the best tackles in the draft by a long shot. Thomas hasn’t played well and has been suspended and the big guy from Louisville has been hurt and having trouble staying in shape.

  20. Allbuccedup Says:

Now if we can someone to replace overpaid Smith our line will be complete.

  21. james west Says:

put heage on the right and wirfs on the left

  22. Alanbucsfan Says:

Wirfs has been great, but Mekhi Becton of Jets was pretty dominating before his injury.

  23. Nick2 Says:

Love it Jasonour GM is definitely bailing out his legacy at the last moment but who cares he did it and should keep his job for sure.

  24. Pigsueybucsfan Says:

Billy Bob: great idea would be a very interesting read

  25. Admiral Redbeard Says:

Hey Joe, could you please let allbuccedup up and orlbucfan in on the secret that you updated from the original post? It would be the gentlemanly thing to do.

  26. #1bucfan Says:

Not going to lie when we drafted a Oline with our 1st pick man I was mad even knowing how well Nelson did last year for the colts as a rookie and how he helped make that line way better but I’m so happy we go him. People really had it out for our GM and yea all the losing wasn’t helping but now look at our draft picks. Davis dean rojo white Ali Cappa Evans Godwin Whitehead smb Winfield wirf and then he also traded for jpp. All the people calling for JLs head need to apologize cause all these draft picks are balling and even better that Ali and cappa are from small schools.
