Stick To Play-Action

October 17th, 2020

Dangerous in play-action.

Joe has maintained on both the “Ira Kaufman Podcast” and on the pages of this here website that perhaps the Bucs might want to go ground-and-pound tomorrow.

The Bucs are rated to be the best team running between the guards in the NFL, up the middle. And the Packers are allowing 4.8 yards per carry on the ground, including 6.1 yards an attempt on the road.

And in the last two games, Ronald Jones has (finally!) had his best two back-to-back games in the NFL, gaining 111 and 106 yards against the Chargers and Bears.

In the NFL Network video below, NFL Network analyst David Carr notes that when park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting Bucs quarterback Tom Brady throws out of play-action, he is damn effective.

In fact, Brady is second in the NFL (11.5 yards per attempt) when throwing out of play-action passes.

And if you don’t run the ball, the play-action pass fools no one. And if you can run the ball, you keep the ball out of the hands of the hottest quarterback in the NFL, Packers signalcaller Aaron Rodgers.

Watch Carr explain about Brady throwing the ball in the NFL Network video below.

Here’s what you do, use playaction on 1st down IN the first half! It doesn’t always need to be on 2nd and 9 because you just run it up the gut on 1st down and everyone in the stadium knows what the play is.

THEN you can run it on 2nd down if you want, it doesn’t just have to be on 1st down.

These are things you’d think Leftwich would have learned by now.

  2. lowercaseg Says:

Playaction every play i dont care. More playaction.

  3. Swampbuc Says:

Leftwich needs to get some serious critique from his boss and his QB. His play calling in the second half of every game except the Chargers has been abysmal.

  4. Lamarcus Says:

BL dont know how or when to call them. BL hasn’t showed any consistency or no true development out the offense. Brady needs to fire him

  5. Godlovesbucs Says:

In his defense, the playcalling was forces to be one dimentional in the chicago game. When you are constantly 1st or 2nd and 20 you have to pass.

  6. $acbuc$ Says:

Great Questions from the Tampa media all week way to go ladies and gents.

  7. $acbuc$ Says:

During Film study I noticed that in the Chicago game it was under 4 minutes we up by 3 and the Bears are on there 30 yard line. It was 3rd and 12 and they called that phantom call On Shaq attack. All I’m saying is that prolonged the game and we lost Vita for the year under 2mins. That hurts!

In the Saints game at the beginning of the 4th quarter we driving and we down by 7 and a pedestrian offense gave the ball back. We could of won that game.

If we don’t rotate this all star roster and play more disciplined football then we are gonna be the Eagles. It’s Bruce offense that’s killing us. BL calls the plays but it’s the down field mismatch stuff getting the QB crushed and our receivers hammy problems.

I can just imagine what Sean Payton or Andy Reid would do with this offensive roster. Heck I would even take Norv Turner or Chudinski right now. We are to fast and to tall not to be playing basketball on turf! Dunkaneers!

  8. Buczilla Says:

Just like we foolishly didn’t do against Chicago last week, we need to pound the ball until the Packers stop it. Don’t give the refs the chance to decide the outcome of the game. Even with some key players banged up, we have the talent to hang with anyone in the league. Zero excuses for us to be an undisciplined team 2 years in a row. If our highly touted coaches are so good, then I expect us to win today period. Being 3-3 is unacceptable and will lead me to think that there is something else going on behind the scenes. I mean, did Arians and crew just flat out forget how to coach? Frustrating gosh darn team. 😂

  9. JA Says:

Don’t understand why Brady doesn’t ignore BL’s play if he is not in agreement. Supposedly, a man with his football IQ has the green light to opt out of any call he sees fit. Even if he doesn’t have that option, on a team where undisciplined behavior seems the norm instead of the exception, what are they going to do to Brady if he takes things into his own hands— bench him?

    Super Bowl rings:

    TB 6
    BL 0

Who should be calling the plays?

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Buc fan for life … Tom Brady is the Field General, not the OC. No doubt he changes plays at the line based on defensive alignments, etc, but play-calling and play design are up to BL, not Brady.

Maybe I’m wrong, but it looks like the Bucs are struggling trying to merge TWO very different offensive philosophies … BA’s Bombs Away and TB’s more methodical, pick em apart approach. I think a lot of our miscues are because of that. Had there been a preseason to work out the kinks, it probably would’ve gone much smoother than it is.

I’m not enamored with BL’s performance as an OC admittedly, but he might be caught between a rock & a hard place as they say, trying to please too many others. The Packers’ game puts him & the Bucs offense at a crossroads IMO. This is the game where we’ll either show a ‘signature’ offensive approach (that’ll endure for the rest of the season), or where we’ll continue to sputter & be inconsistent. Difficult to be consistent without an identity.

  12. BucEmUp Says:

For once id like to see some fast paced creativity on offense. Why isnt scott miller a focal point in the ahort passing game? Line Evans up in the slot occationally. Throw the ball to brate before using tanner hudson. What about that 10 million dollar tight end oh whats his name again???
This offense is a regressing embarrassment. Year two of Leftwich is crumbling now that DCS know his predictable tendencies.

  13. adam from ny Says:

if left-twitch bombs out with play calling sunday, do they bench him next week against the little chuckaneer ???

  14. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

BL & BA are too hard headed to adjust and take the obvious. No, they will insist on 2/3s of the Offense being passing plays. Hopefully with Godwin playing, it will work.

  15. SOEbuc Says:

I’m assuming there is going to be a lot of running in this game in the first place. If we can get a run game going early in the game the PA could look mighty fine with all the receiver’s returning.

  16. Brandon Says:

Actually, studies have shown that what makes play action effective is just simply the frequency of running the ball not so much of running it well. It doesn’t even have to be effective, just done.

  17. orlbucfan Says:

Arians calls the shots, not BL nor Methuselah. I would like to see why people consider him so great. He has the players for a complete game. So, how about calling one for a change!

  18. Sport Says:

More play call whining…. all you brilliant armchair play callers trained by Madden 2010 are hillarious.

Keep it up, you Definitely know more about it than trained professionals.

    Bwaaahaaahaaa!

    In BA I Trust!

  19. bojim Says:

Lets see. RoJo can run and Brady is great out of play action. BL ‘Nope”.

  20. O'Neilbuc Says:

No yall are not going to make BL a scapegoat because yall did this last year with Jamies !!!!
