Same Plays, Different Results

Difference explained

Joe had a simple question for Harold Goodwin today, the Bucs’ run game coordinator/assistant head coach/offensive line coach.

JoeBucsFan.com: Coach, what’s the best way to explain what the difference is in the running game this year?

Harold Goodwin: I think RoJo is a little bit more seasoned. I think our guys are a little bit more seasoned up front, the tight ends and the O-line, just from a technique standpoint [and] knowing what we want. To be honest with you, most of the plays are still the same. We just have a better understanding of what we’re trying to get done. And I think Ro has done a hell of a job this year just getting to downhill, not being indecisive, just taking the hole when he sees it.

Last year, even with a mobile quarterback, the Bucs ranked 28th in yards per carry. It was ugly.

This year they’re up to 18th-ranked in the NFL in yards per carry without a scrambler under center. RoJo, Leonard Fournette and KeShawn Vaughn have combined for 153 carries and a 4.74 yards-per-carry average.

Now that’s a real running game. What a breath of fresh air.

defenses have to respect the qb we have behind center now….no more begging our qb to throw….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  2. Soggy Says:

everything is a breath of fresh air this year OH YA GO BUCS

  3. Steven007 Says:

    813, exactly right.

  4. O'Neilbuc Says:

Defenses new we were throwing the ball every play because we didn’t even try to run the ball . And again Brady has not played good against good defenses . So yall can act like this the same playbook on offense and Bruce Arians didn’t change his trash no risk no biscuit offense when every quarterback he has ever coach threw a lot of interceptions . Brady said after the saints game we ain’t running those plays any more . I’m bringing in my own offense and it’s shows because look at Mike Evans numbers and Godwin . Brady throws to Miller and Gronk most of the time . And not to mention Brady has thrown the ball to the runningbacks more than any quarterback in the league just like in New England . And that was smart on his part we saw the first week with the trash no risk it no biscuit offense .

  5. Doctor Stroud Says:

A breath of fresh air with all of the doors and windows wide open on a cool late October day in the middle of the Fall…but not like Coach Koetter’s fresh air.

  6. Boston Boy Says:

The difference is Tom Brady. Think its overextension? Look at the Patriots now compared with last year. The only thing that changed in BOTH situations is the QBs.

  7. Anonymous Says:

Everything is not Tom Brady and neither is it supposed to be….for when he moves on what shall we do?

  8. ModHairKen Says:

He seems to be running harder into the line and not trying to avoid the first hit. He’s strong enough to make yards through the first hit.

  9. August 1976 Buc Says:

Their a massive difference, the Master and GOAT is playing Sheriff Marshal Dillion around these parts now. There is a huge difference now in accountability. Look at the difference since the Chi Town give away. That is just example of accountability. And the fact that teams fear Mr 6 rings and will not load up the box. When you see Ryan Jensen getting real and owning stupid undisciplined play, that tells you everything about there being a change.of heart and attitude that this team has shown to everybody. This leopard has changed its spots. This is not the same ol YUCS anymore. The Balance of power in the NFC has shifted to the Bucs and we will soon see how well they do against the KC Chiefs. GO BUCS!!!!!

  10. Hawk Says:

“.for when he moves on what shall we do?”
Hopefully, he will have instilled some self-confidence in the rest of the team.

  11. “That guy” Says:

Same plays, only difference is a qb the defense has to respect.

  12. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

    the year of change…..

…from Den of Depression to Tompa Stadium.

    Go Bucs!!!!

  13. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

    Well said Hawk

  14. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

    What shall we do..?

Well, maybe polish a couple Super Bowl trophies.

  15. SlyPirate Says:

How great would a Bucs-Steelers Super Bowl be?

    TONS OF HEADLINES
    Top 2 Defenses.
    2 most complete teams.
    Brady vs Roth.
    AND … Steelers vs AB!!!!

Let’s do our part and get there.

  16. SlyPirate Says:

Joe, quick question: Do the Bucs still have 1-2 female coaches?

If so, how are they doing? What do they coach?

If not, it kind of answers the aforementioned questions.

  17. tickrdr Says:

  19. 74 Bucs fan Says:

So… the Saints are going to see a 4 wide Pro Bowl set:

    Evans
    Godwin
    Gronk
    AB

Thrown to from the GOAT. Yeah, good luck with that! Crazy

  20. August 1976 Buc Says:

It definately smelled like a certain Dog walked in the room. lol Anonymous Welcome to the new Normal, Highest scoring offense and #1 Defense. GO BUCS!!!!!!!!

  21. D1 Says:

Expectations rose the second Brady was signed. Players admitted they worked harder in the off season and the preseason and expections have only risen since then.

  22. August 1976 Buc Says:

Hey 74 Bucs I got bottle of tarnex, we are good to go for the next couple of years. GO BUCS!!! NFC CHAMPIONSHIP ROLLS THROUGH TAMPA!!!!

  23. Nutbucer Says:

The Fournette breakout game is coming

  24. unbelievable Says:

Less loaded boxes + better o-line play + RoJo more confident

    Simple as that.

  25. Craig Says:

Yep, no more loading the box and daring the QB to throw.

Cappa also got late last season and RoJo got a few decent runs behind him. Drafting Wirfs was lucky deal. He has been great and Rojo has found some holes that didn’t happen last season.

  26. unbelievable Says:

Also is anyone watching this Carolina Atlanta game?

We should absolutely destroy these teams the next time we play them. Destroy I say!

  27. adam from ny Says:

atlanta is now 2-1 with raheem as head coach…

if they didn’t blow that game last week to detroit he’d be 3-0 as head coach there…go figure…

don’t sleep on atlanta, they started out the same last year then won something like 7 of their last 8 games to finish the season…

you can never take your division opponents lightly…more often than not you end up splitting the season series…

hopefully in a season like this, we sweep through both of these division rivals

  28. webster Says:

Some of you guys clearly dont know what you are talking about. There were no stacked boxes last year. No defense was worried about barber or rojo. Teams flooded the secondary. I know it fits your narrative but teams constantly had more players in the secondary because they constantly stopped the run with their front 4. Like the coach said, the oline, rojo are more seasoned this year.

  29. unbelievable Says:

Division games are always tough, no doubt. But we’ve seen ATL and NO hang huge double digit losses on us over the years.

It’s our turn to unleash some pain.

  30. Bucsfanman Says:

Nothing makes me happier than seeing a healthy, EFFECTIVE running game!
Go ahead and try to kid yourself that it doesn’t make a difference!

  31. Youngbucs Says:

Oneilbucs brady is better than Winston the second you accept it you can be at peace brother!!!!!

  32. Youngbucs Says:

You really are a 🤡 still whinny dude makes excuses for losing. Now he continues to make excuses for winning it’s sad what winston does to peoples brains. Dude shut up and enjoy good football for a change you need help.

  33. Oneilbuc Says:

Youngbucs you the clown cookie we have the number 1 defense in the NFL . And you try to make it about Brady but this is a defense lead team with a running game . I told yall that Mike or Godwin will not get a 1,000 yards with this quarterback because of the plays . But you said Evans will be Moss . Again I love my defense more than the offense because of the bears game and saints game . Our defense beat the Packers . Again defense wins championships .

  34. Sourbob Says:

Hopefully Brady’s spending a little extra time with ROJO on catching, imagine if he could hold those short passes,he could be dangerous.

  35. Youngbucs Says:

Oneil you’re the clown Winston had a negative affect on the team including the defense whether you wanna admit it or not. By the way Brady throws to the open man so stfu. Also you can talk no risk bull crap all you want. Here’s a fact for you 20 of winston ints were short to intermediate so the excuse about pushing the ball down field is a bull excuses.

  36. Youngbucs Says:

Oneil we don’t care about your opinions you said we were downgrading at QB remember your words hold no weight here.

  37. Youngbucs Says:

Brady is smarter more accurate and a better leader it’s just facts except it. He was the right QB for the team right now it’s ok dude.

  38. Oneilbuc Says:

I still think it’s a downgrade go ask Evans and Godwin . Brady is not the reason why we are winning . He’s done well against bad teams . But with good defenses he’s not been good . We run the ball more now and we throw more short passes now and that’s the difference between last year and this year .

  39. Youngbucs Says:

Yea because you’re a clown you don’t think anybody’s better then winston let alone Tom Brady. Go back to your master on Twitter. You’re a moron Brady is better than Winston in every category and it has nothing to do with run gm and defense. Tickrdr please throw up the numbers for oneil so he can run back into hiding. You out here lying Brady is 1 of the best QBs throwing deep leads the league in 20+ but go ahead change the subject spew more lies you don’t talk fact you say anything you got nothing. You’re a waste of my time.

  40. Youngbucs Says:

We throw more short passes but 20 of Winston ints where between 1-12 and 12-15 yds go figure.

  41. Youngbucs Says:

Don’t come with opinions come with some facts to support or shut up!!!!!

  42. TOM Says:

Accuracy! You want accuracy. Watch the throw to Miller last week. Grady is both smart & accurate even at this late stage of his career.

  43. Bucsfanman Says:

“I still think it’s a downgrade go ask Evans and Godwin.”

You mean our top 2 WRs who have been injured since game #1?! One who, has been playing on ONE ankle, the other who has hamstring and finger problems. Surely, those have nothing to do with their production. I’m sure they’re being “black-balled” by Brady, his top 2 WRs. Yes, that makes complete sense!
The GOAT is a “downgrade”! You heard it here folks. From actual Buc “fans”!

  44. Oneilbuc Says:

Youngbucs you are stupid I’ve never said who was better Brady is old and can’t move . Jamies is younger and can move plus he’s still young . Cookie you know nothing about football we run the ball waaaaay more this year then we did in 4 years . Brady is not ask to do the same thing Jamies had to do . Bruce Arians didn’t tell Brady to gain 20 ponds because he was going to take a lot of hits . That’s why this a hold new playbook that you try to ignore . They didn’t give Jamies a new right tackle , 4 new runningbacks, a new tight and with another wr like A.B . That’s a fact and it still superbowl or bust Cookie !!!!

  45. Youngbucs Says:

Ok oneil whatever you say they told winston to throw 30 ints and before that dirk told him to lead the league every year in turnovers it’s everybody’s fault but winston he does no wrong. Dam it feels good to have a real QB!!!!!! I’m enjoying the winning I know the team is also. Real Bucs fans deserve this feeling not crying about 1 dude outta 53. Like I said Brady is better and was the right choice every knows that even you continue to die on your hill moron I’m done with you.

  46. Youngbucs Says:

By the way you just repeated Brady was a downgrade that’s saying winston is better do you have a brain you type anything you’re a waste of time smh!
