Pass Rusher Will Gholston

October 14th, 2020

Joe’s No. 1 surprise on the NFL’s No. 2-ranked defense, aka the Bucs defense, lies hidden and overshadowed.

And no, Joe’s not talking about the disappointing starts by Devin White and Sean Murphy-Bunting.

Joe’s talking about Will Gholston morphing into a dangerous pass rusher at 300+ pounds. It’s been quite a transformation for Gholston, a Bucs fourth-round pick in 2013.

A career run-stuffer who never could figure out getting to quarterbacks, Gholston is a changed player. Consider that he has seven quarterback hits this season, plus two sacks. Gholston’s season-high in QB hits is eight, when he was a starter under Lovie Smith in 2015.

Two sacks already? That represents Gholston’s total over the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons.

And if you turn on the film, you’ll see that Gholston isn’t getting lucky with his 2020 pass rush numbers.

Gholston has played 50 percent of the defensive snaps this season and his appearances have been rather limited on passing downs, which make his numbers even more impressive.

Joe’s eager to see what more Gholston snaps in Vita Vea’s absence will look like.

Is he a free agent after this season or do we have him one more year? He’s gonna be a big part in helping replace vita vea. Always been a beast against the run though. I think we were just starting to see how good Vita Vea truly is. He was eating double teams, getting pressure, and acted as a stone wall during running plays. Sucks to lose him.

i think he’ll step up and continue to improve….which will only make the dline stronger….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

Gholston has surprised me this year. He is very much better than last year. Nice off-season work.

“But if #3 were here he’d have 21 sacks by now!!!!!!!!!!!!!”, said NogTurd.

  5. Bobby M. Says:

He’s been solid….i dont think we’ll notice a major difference with Vea out. I anticipate the line performing a tad better on pass rushing situations. Vea is all around very effective but Gholston might provide a tad more quickness on passing downs.

  6. SB Says:

We are going to miss Vea.

  7. Lamarcus Says:

He has a been a solid and consistent run stopper all his career. Today he is actually better. One of my favorite d lineman

THIS TEAM IS IN TROUBLE…..ITS GON BE A SAD DAY IN TOMPA BAY FOR OUR SECONDARY SMH POOR TODD BOWLES

I have been a Gholston fan since he became a Buc. I am loving his recent transformation getting a lot more muscle and weight. Now he can become a star for us in the nick of time with Noches at 320 pounds playing the nose. I also think our backup from Nebraska will breakout now to become the replacement for Suh next year when the cap is lowered. Hope Vea will mend well. Maybe in time for the Super Bowl this year in our stadium. We just have to beat Green Bay Sunday for starters.

Agreed Joe. I’m seeing Gholston all over the field in a way that I haven’t seen in many years. That said, I imagine he may fade into obscurity again with Vea out for the season.

It may be the optimist in me but I think we play GB harder this week than we have played any team.
Just wish we had a 100% CG and ME. Would be nice to have Watson back too

Hey Joe. Just a thought, maybe I should change my IP address so I am not in Mod with every comment

  13. Dark Mominick Says:

    He is signed through 2022.

  14. August 1976 Buc Says:

Will is a solid DL, not great but a good player. Yes we will miss the Rhino V Vea, but they will weather the storm. Can the Bucs run the ball down G-Bay’s throat with ROJO and Fournette? Sure would help this week. Because the secondary most likely is going to have a rough game with Rodgers showing up. So if they can play keep away and have actual discipline with a return to scoring TD’s instead a bunch of field goals, would go along way to winning against GB. BTW RIP Pete Axthelm Back in the 80’s Pete used to call this game the “Bay of Pigs” And I would say it was very appropriate. lol GO BUCS!!!!!!

Speaking of Devin White, he better make up for a missing VV. He was the one who injured him.

Power cycle your modem! It should reset your IP address. At least Comcast works that way.

I’m not sure how the cellular system assigns IPs.

I remember after Suh signed, Gholston seemed excited to have him here, and seemed to shadow him all training camp. Has the student become a master?
