Now Official: O.J. Done For Year

October 6th, 2020

MRI results are in.

The expected has happened.

The Bucs placed tight end O.J. Howard on injured reserve today, ending his season. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the MRI results of Howard’s injured Achilles is that he tore it.

The Bucs previously believed he had ruptured the Achilles. Joe is confident the doctors that frequent this site can explain the difference, if there is a difference.

So sad. OJ seemed excited about the year. BL/BA had started to come around on using TEs in the passing game and our WRs are hurt. The Bucs could have used OJ and he likely would have done well. Get well.

  2. Brandon Says:

Not much of a difference, Joe. Either way, in this day and age, it is about a 6-8 month injury for most athletes to come back 100%. He will be in a boot and not walking for six weeks. This surgery and recovery has come a long way in the past 10 years. It is no longer an athlete’s death sentence. I elected to have my Achilles cut to remove a giant spur on my heel and 10 months later I’m happy I did. I was cleared for sports after five months, 110% testing at six months, and felt 100% by eight. He should be ready for voluntary workouts in May.

  3. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

Brandon, thank you for that encouraging post and info…

Still so sad to lose OJ this season…

He was going to be competing for Gronk’s 2011 TE TD Record this year!!! Dang it!

  4. adam from ny Says:

    wow so sad…

he’s had it ultra tough from the injury standpoint over his few years with the bucs…

if what brandon says is correct, that’ good news because this injury has ended many a career in many a sport… ^^^^^

it could alter his greyhound like speed tho…

    get well yung juice

  5. Dewey Selmon Says:

The whole NFL could know who Tanner Hudson is by the end of the season.

  6. Mike Says:

It sucks that he is out for the year, but it will be great if he can come back healthy next year, as he still has a bright future ahead if he can recover 100%.

  7. Wesley Says:

Blows, but he’ll be back strong.

  8. Davenport Buc Says:

He’s due $6M in 2021 but not guaranteed — he may have played his last down for the Bucs

  9. Davenport Buc Says:

wait … sorry, Bucs picked up his 5th year. His $6M is guaranteed next year. Damn. that’s a lot of cash if he doesn’t come back strong.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

My information is that Auclair will be back shortly after his mini-IR stint…..that should complete our TE corps……Gronk, Brate, Auclair & Hudson

  11. zzbuc Says:

really sad, great player, great teammate!!!!
Wish OJ the very best and a speedy recovery…..

  12. PSL Bob Says:

Is it just me or does it seem like the NFL is experiencing a ton of injuries this year. Probably due to the lack of OTAs, pre-season, conditioning, etc. due to the virus. Feel bad for OJ, but thank goodness we’re deep at the position.

    Yep, this was predicted.

  14. pewter941 Says:

    Tanner Hudson time

  15. Dano407 Says:

    When is Auclair coming back??

  16. NPRSageBoy Says:

    Your best ability is availability.

OJ hasn’t completed a full season since he joined the Bucs.

    Time to move on.

    Peace, out

  17. Joe Says:

    When is Auclair coming back??

    “Getting there” Arians said.

Feel free to interpret that however you wish.

  18. bojim Says:

    Good luck OJ.

  19. David Says:

I think Brady is going to like Brate.

As for the injuries, McCaffrey is on IR and a few other big names wentbonnIR this weekend.
Lots of tendons popping. Lack of camp in the summer heat

  20. adam from ny Says:

    david:

    ummm…

brady already knows if he likes brate,,,

    in fact, loooong ago

  21. Mort Says:

Hey lets go trade Cameron Brate for a six pack and a bag of cheetos!

    – All of you idiots before last week.

  22. #1bucfan Says:

This is a bummer. I love watching O.J. play. He’s a beast. Sucks he has only played one full season in his career. Just can’t seem to stay healthy. On the bright side Brate will step in and take care of Buisness as usual. He’s not as talented as O.J. but he’s MR RELIABLE. the other positive is if gronk or Brate get hurt we get to see Hudson and I think he will shine if he gets the chance. Go Bucs

  23. Anonymous Says:

Gronk, Brate and Hudson should be able to step up in OJ’s absence. Keep it going guys!

Sorry for O.J., he was going to have a strong year with TB12.

  24. Karma Says:

I’m glad we got rid of Brate and his high salary of $5-6Million as some of the couch/keyboard GM’s had suggested on here…Sarcasm 😉

  25. Karma Says:

This juice ain’t worth the squeeze…Good one Mort!

  26. TheBucsAnthem Says:

OJ seems to be always injured……..he’s wearing his body out…..sad really

I just don’t see OJ with the bucs come next season if he cannot stay on field long enough.

  27. D-Rome Says:

So Joe, do you think this the end of OJ Howard’s career in Tampa?

  28. D-Rome Says:

Very interesting, Brandon. I’ve had bone spurs in my Achilles for 16 years and I nearly opted for surgery after a recent bout of severe pain. I did physical therapy instead and six weeks later I can resume all my sports. I’m about 90% now.

  29. Roster Says:

I believe 5th year option is guaranteed for injury. Is that not correct?

  30. CalBucsFan Says:

Tough break, or guess I should say tough tear, for OJ. But Brate has been one of the Bucs bright spots for several years now, and he is the better receiving TE anyway. He’s been the forgotten TE for too long, so I’m very happy to see that he should be getting more game action now.

  31. Allbuccedup Says:

No Godwin, no Howard and maybe no Evans not good.

  32. lambchop Says:

    Allbuccedup,

It’s the Bears! LOL. I’m sure it will be next man up for our offense and with a strong D, this shouldn’t be an issue this Thursday. It all depends if we play 60 or 30. Gotta play 60 to not beat yourself in this league.

  33. FactTeller Says:

Ruptured my left one Feb 2011 @27 yrs old made full recovery…
Had surgery by a former doctor/team surgeon of Steelers. He told me you will have a higher percentage of tearing your other one do to over compensating (mental)

I came back active and played all my sports recrearionally albeit until spring of 2016 when I did rupture my right one. I Knew right away do to going thru it before…. still mmade full recovery. KOBE, T-Suggs, on and on had this and CAME back.

OJ is young and will def be back. He will have surgery by the best in the world amd crush rehab. Right now he is still a BUC and trust me the BEST thing we can do is send positive vibes and mojo his way. Maybe he reads these or maybe he dont but lets support our own NOW and worry about next year when it comes. Remeber when we get our hardware in Feb. HE WILL GET ONE TOO!!
    (Pardon the long post)

    Go Bucs!!!

  34. Mike C Says:

Man Brady is so lucky!!!!! Only 2 RBs left on the roster, a rash of injuries for the WR group, and now his most productive TE out for the year….. can you imagine a luckier QB! Smh go piss on a tree n pup.

  35. unbelievable Says:

That is incorrect, OJ completely 1 full season.

The other 2 years he ended on IR towards the end of the season
