“Nobody Is Asking Him To Babysit Your Kid”

October 31st, 2020

Nothing limp about Bucs.

Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles isn’t a fan of Antonio Brown the person. He is a huge fan of Antonio Brown the receiver.

So in his weekly podcast “In the Trenches,” the popular local sports radio voice explained Bucs fans should let Bucs brass worry if Brown is an arse or not.

“Nobody is asking him to babysit your kid, OK?” Beckles said of Brown. “If [the Bucs] were asking him to babysit your kid, I would probably say, ‘Let’s not do that.’ Antonio Brown is a football player going into a football locker room with fifty-something other athletes and grownups. Let them worry about it.

“As a Buccaneer fan, all you should worry about is if Antonio Brown will make us better on Sunday. Forget about what kind of a person he is! I’m letting you know guys, you guys cheer for a lot of bad people a lot of the time in a lot of different sports.

“So don’t worry about what kind of person he is. Is he a good person? Hell no, he’s not a good person. He does some really f’ed up stuff. Obviously, stuff I never want to be around and never want to do.

“But can he play football? Hell yes! And I think the fact that Bruce Arians and Jason Licht and Tom Brady believe that this locker room is ready for Antonio Brown to roll up into I think is a good thing. I really do.”

Beckles believes the Bucs almost couldn’t pass on Brown.

“Bringing Antonio Brown in is a sacrifice the team has to make,” Beckles said. “It is a sacrifice for a lot of people.
Antonio Brown, when healthy, with his mind right and his mind straight — which has been a while — the Bucs hope is still, we hope, one of the best receivers in the world.

“We could have not picked him up and we could have run into him in the playoffs and he could have whooped our @ss. … So let’s be happy we signed Antonio Brown. He’s either going to sh!t on himself and he’s going to get cut, or he is going to lead us to the promised land. So I really wouldn’t want to trip on this too much.”

Beckles also offered other observations on the win over the Raiders to raise the Bucs’ record to 5-2.

* Beckles believes Evans is starting to get upset over not being targeted as he has in years past. “Mike Evans is clearly frustrated,” Beckles believes. “He did a few frustrated things [last Sunday], showing his frustration on the sidelines. Hey, whatever. It is an aggressive, passionate sport. That’s OK. You don’t really want to see your star receiver p!ssed off if you are winning. Tom Brady is sprinkling the ball everywhere. Everywhere. Everybody is getting some. Mike Evans is not getting his normal load, which is maybe something he is going to have to start getting used to.

“Scotty Miller was the man [Sunday]. He’s not always going to be the man. Chris Godwin is the man sometimes. Sometimes Mike Evans, sometimes Gronk, sometimes RoJo. That is the mentality these guys have to have. That’s the mentality the New England Patriots had with Tom Brady all of those years. You have no time to b!tch and moan about not getting the ball. We’re too busy winning, man. … So sometimes you have to make sacrifices to get rings.”

* Beckles said the 33-yard pass from Brady to Miller was a work of art. “That pass that Scotty Miller caught for a touchdown was one of the prettiest things I have ever seen in any walk of life. That pass that Tom Brady threw was absolutely gorgeous. You couldn’t throw it any better. Couldn’t be any softer; couldn’t place it any better.

* Here comes Gronk: “Rob Gronkowski is starting to show he can score being physical. And that’s a beautiful thing.”

* Winning is more important than running. “They didn’t run the ball as much as I would have liked to have seen, but I’m not complaining about that.”

* Superstars inside on defense. “Devin White on defense is a superstar as is Lavonte David. They were getting a lot of run from NFL Today and all those pregame shows saying they are the best pair of linebackers in the game. They might be right. Those two cats can fly. Devin White had three sacks. When is the last time we had a middle linebacker — I will tell you when: Never.

“I don’t think I have ever seen a middle linebacker get three sacks in Tampa Bay. That should tell you about the schemes Todd Bowles is putting out there and the way he is using his athletes. That’s the cool thing about Todd Bowles: He takes his athletes and develops his system around them.”

* It’s a good time to be a Bucs fan. “As a Buccaneers fan, you should feel really good about yourself. … This Buccaneer team is proving every week why they shouldn’t lose to a crappy football team and that is a good thing.

* The Giants are garbage. “If you watch football like I do, listen, there should be no gosh darn reason [the Bucs] should lose to the Giants. There should be no reason to lose to anybody in that division. Awful, just awful. Really, really bad.”

As always, Beckles welcomes feedback and encourages listeners to submit Bucs questions by e-mailing him at IanBeckles@RadioInfluence.com.

Imagine the Bucs’ playoff chances if NO or Seattle signed Brown instead of the Bucs…

  2. Elita Vita Says:

Agreed Ian. It’s all in to win the SB this year. Bucs must not let however Brown disrupt the team psychologically to its detriment.

  3. Rico 210 Says:

Great points made. If any player is eligible to play and can help us win then sign em up. Winning is all that matters. Stats while nice be damned. The Evans thing is bothersome to me and now another all-pro receiver showed up. Cmon Godzilla keep ya focus. Brady will feed you.
    Go Bucs

  4. Elita Vita Says:

Brady seems to utilize the whole team. It’s actually a work of art that really keeps opponents on their toes. Certainly not optimal for players wanting to create increased stats but it is best for the team as a whole.

  5. mark2001 Says:

I said he wouldn’t be a good person to be attending a church couples retreat with other couples. But the point is the same, I think.

  6. mark2001 Says:

And BTW Joe…when will we have that AB press conference, that I thought we wouldn’t have until post game press conferences, at best?

  7. Al121976 Says:

Those are probably the most solid points I’ve ever heard from Ian. Good write up!

  8. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    @Cobraboy
Exactly! Imagine The Saints with both Thomas and Antonio Brown ?

  9. Joe in Michigan Says:

Warren Sapp wasn’t the nicest guy, but the Bucs probably wouldn’t have won a Super Bowl without him. The Bucs need Brown less than they needed Sapp, but I believe he’ll contribute and not be much trouble, this year, anyway.

  10. SufferingSince76 Says:

Either Evans is a team player or he isn’t. If he’s more worried about his stats than winning, I question his commitment.

  11. Rayjay1122 Says:

ME13, Godwin, Scooter and AB will be by far the most dangerous WR group in the NFL. If the OL can continue to give TB12 time to throw the ball, this Bucs team will be the biggest Juggernaut the NFL maybe has ever seen as it has great defense and offense at the same time.

I only worry about games when the bad #76 shows up. The last couple of weeks he has done great but I just hope winning motivates him to continue playing with high effort.

  12. Boston Boy Says:

Exactly what well rounded Bucs fans have been saying to Joe. Football isn’t a bridge game. The guy is not in your house

    * The Giants are garbage. “If you watch football like I do, listen, there should be no gosh darn reason [the Bucs] should lose to the Giants. There should be no reason to lose to anybody in that division. Awful, just awful. Really, really bad.”

Yeah…. this should be a beat down every Bucs fan can be proud of

    Let the good time ROLL

  15. Rayjay1122 Says:

The Giants have almost zero chance of beating this Bucs team and the only way the Giants win is if the Bucs lay an egg and beat themselves and even then I doubt the Giants win. Hopefully we learned a season long lesson in Chicago about being undisciplined and avoid any repeats.

  16. Rayjay1122 Says:

I predict 5 offensive TDs and 1 defensive TD with the Giants only scoring on a pair of FGs. 42-6 Bucs.

  17. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Nobody was complaining that he was going to have to babysit kids… That whole argument is irrelevant!! The fact that these players can act that way then get greeted with open arms later is pathetic!!! As soon as he used a racist slur he should have been out of the league!!! Fight racism is on every helmet, every basketball court, every billboard all over the place!! Hypocrites!!! Except you know, racism against white people is impossible right?? ONLY whites can be racist right?? Brainwashed morons!!! …. Same goes for Richie incognito!! Soon as he called that guy the N word he should have been bounced from the league for good!!! It’s pathetic, immoral and screams in the face of justice!! There are more important things in life than money, football and championships!! Kids look up to these guys and by allowing these things we are telling our kids that it’s ok to be a racist, violent idiot… As long as you can run fast with a football!! Is that what you would sit down and tell your children to their face?? Because that’s exactly what your telling them by cheering for this kind of guy and making excuses for his behavior!!! We’re going to lose Godwin or Evans over this you watch!!! And THAT is when brown will be brown!!!

  18. Rayjay1122 Says:

Sorryjack you are obviously filled with hate. Step back from the ledge and gi see a shrink. Oh, and remember to vote because based on your rant it is obvious who you support.

  19. Swampbuc Says:

Or jump off the ledge, even better.

  20. August 1976 Buc Says:

The bottom line with Antonio Brown is on the Football field he strikes fear in the hearts of Defensive coaches and Players. The same goes for Brady. When is the last time the Bucs had players that struck fear in anything. As Swaggu said on ESPN Antonio Brown is a problem for the NFL, meaning teams that have to play the Bucs. Again Defensive coaches are going to be crapping their pants trying to figure out how you stop the unstoppable. Clean Jersey for Tom, no turnovers, and the consistent Defense they are playing is unstoppable right now, and barring injury will represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. We have the Titanic tilt coming up against KC soon. We will see who is better very quickly. KC is awesome, but the Bucs are no joke, so we will see. GO BUCS!!! KEEP TOM ALIVE FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP DRIVE!!!!!!!

  21. stpetebucsfan Says:

Antonio Brown is in his 30’s and well aware his time is running short. He comes to us incredibly motivated…both on the field and off.

And again…some people grow up slower than others. I joke..I think…that I didn’t mature until around 50. Perhaps with Brady, Anthony Robbins, guys like ME, CG, Gronk and the rest…AB may find true happiness and actually FIT in on a TEAM.

  22. Architek Says:

I agree with Beckles on every take! I’m fine with AB coming, this is about winning, not a kids show.

Let’s not forget last December and let’s also not forget how bad the Bucs have been since Gruden. I would think media and fans would be more grateful and excited about top shelf talent and relevancy.

  23. Ron says Says:

It makes it a lot easier for Brady cause he almost can’t make a mistake in that most teams would not consider it a mistake to throw to Evan, Godwin, Brown or Gronk or even Fournette out of the backfield regardless of the coverage. Now he actually has the ability to put each of them in favorable positions with the defense deluded and spread. It makes us a tough team to guard.

  24. Bucamania Says:

Beckles with some great takes as always. That pass to MIller was a freaking thing of beauty! AB will bring even more swagger and SuperBowl winning experience to an already talented WR group. Can’t wait for the Saints rematch!

  25. TOM Says:

Beckles is a jerk. I don’t read anything he has to say

  26. Mike Johnson Says:

Nope..I don’t believe Evans is upset about not being targeted as much. He seems more upset at all the double coverage and non-calls he’s been getting. Evans is not like you Beckles. Evans is a quality character guy. There is a difference.

  27. Buczilla Says:

    Great stuff.

  28. adam from ny Says:

    what if :

evans isn’t giving in to brady as “the man on the offensive side of the ball”…

then there can be a bit of tension…

all other receivers are brady subordinates and acting as such…

    i doubt mike is…

brady night be looking at other options on the field until mike gets it…

tom can literally starve mike out there if he so chooses…

mike needs to fall in line as a brady subordinate and tom will feed the mofo like never before…

this is just a take, but what if it’s actually what’s going on beneath the surface right now…

    just a thought…

hopefully mike is just hobbled a bit and the matter will clear itself organically…

we don’t need any power struggles on a team doing so well…

    then in comes AB…yikes

  29. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Rayjay swampbuc …. I’m the hate filled one huh?? Lol …. Are you racist?? Whatever color either of you are if you worked somewhere and someone did the things that he has done and called you whatever stereotypical thing matches you wouldn’t you expect that person to be fired and never allowed back in the building?? If you beat up someone and got convicted of a felony or was tied to a rape or sent threatening text to some woman wouldn’t you expect to be punished?? Why should we hold these people to any other standard!! You morons in here sticking up for a trash human being who probably thinks of people like you as peons and just little glitch azz white boy!! If you believe in the first racism stuff and the metoo movement and all that crap but still support someone like this guy then congratulations… You are the biggest hypocrite in the world!!! …. All I’m saying is everyone else that is poor to middle class are treated a certain was and are expected to act right and be polite and not break the law or they will pay the price!! Why is it a different standard for people like this?? … You just telling me to drop dead or whatever stupid thing you said just shows you have no way to debate your point because your shallow hypocrites!!! You are the problem in this country!! NOT the guy demanding ACCOUNTABILITY!!! Guess bucs fans are still getting used to concept!!
