Mike Edwards’ Impact

October 26th, 2020

Playing time growing.

A week ago against the Packers, Mike Edwards damn near had a pick-six against the great Aaron Rodgers.

Edwards was one block from making that rare play. After struggling as a rookie safety, Edwards had a strong 2020 training camp and that has carried over into the regular season, so much so that Bucco Bruce Arians has told his defensive assistants they must get Edwards on the field more.

Yesterday during the crushing of Chucky’s Raiders, Edwards’ defensive impact continued. He tipped a pass that Antoine Winfield intercepted and Edwards also had a pick of a Derek Carr pass that was wiped out because of a defensive penalty.

“When it is a passing situation, we have to have him on the field,” Arians said of Edwards.

The Bucs already have a good defense. For a guy to grow into being a contributor off the bench only means more depth and options.

If Edwards can continue to get his mitts on passes like he has in his past two games, that’s lethal potential.

As observed by those unbiased, this young secondary continuing to improve and make plays is damn fun to watch.

This tram is now a true powerhouse. Each and every unit is playing at a very high level.

We are imposing our will on teams. We have depth and they are producing.

When we play our game, we can’t be beat.

I see the Trollbags are in full retreat. Waiting and probably hoping the Bucs will lose soon so they can spew their same old Wrong drivel.

Meanwhile, while sitting in first place…..

    In BA I Trust!

Mike Edwards has earned more playing time. Every time he gets in the field he makes plays.

  3. adam from ny Says:

edwards is playing very well during his time allotted…

smb is becoming somewhat of a liability…

might need to find another depth corner….

    where is motley now (lol)

either smb is hurt or getting worse, or the rest of the guys have just really gotten better and matured on the field, while smb is sort of remaining what he was during most of last season…

hoping it’s just a lingering injury to the groin…

otherwise he’s going to start getting targeted heavily by opponents…

he’s becoming a glaring weak link back there

  4. Iamabuc Says:

After an promising debut, SMB has been invisible.

  5. adam from ny Says:

    ^^^

    he’s not so invisible…

he’s getting torched, often out of position and missing tackles…

the situation is not correcting itself and might need to be addressed at this point

  6. adam from ny Says:

also injured justin evans might need that release at this point…

the secondary has matured and grown without him a whole lot now

  7. geno711 Says:

Raiders corners got tourched more than SMB.

Which player do you want to bring in that will be better than SMB?

  8. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

If Edwards can improve on his tackling, which he excelled in college, he would be a top ten safety.

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

Great ‘problem’ to have. You can never have enough competent DBs. Mike is making plays.

    Let’s go BUCS!!

Sport you ain’t ever lie! You only see those trolls when we lose, well one will come up crying his fav qb didn’t have all this going on last year, all ignoring the fact he did have all those turnovers something we’re happily missing this year! Brady IS the reason this offense is jumping off on teams. He’s proven Bellicheat is the obesity who can’t win w/o Brady. Every week Brady gets to say HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW????? !!!!!

  12. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

I think that Brady has proven that it’s the qb not Arians No Riskit No Biskit system that causes all those interceptions AND you need to involve the TEs in the offense. Proof that Arians can make adjustments. Now if only he can get BL to adjust his 1st down runs to play action pass, I mean REAL play action pass!

Well said Sport, SUPER BOWL OR BUST!!!! GO BUCS!!!!!

  14. Darin Says:

    Alabama
Exactly. If he gets a lil mo crazy he gets on the field in all situations. Run tackling at that level isnt for everyone

  15. #1bucfan Says:

Really like Edwards. Doesn’t shy away from hitting and seems to be around the ball a lot. If his int didnt get wipedout with a penalty he would have 3 int this year in a part time role. Get this guy on the field more please

  16. 813bucboi Says:

edwards needs to start with winfield at safety….he’s earned it….

SMB is an outside CB strictly….unfortunately, his slot cb experiment hasnt gone the way we all hoped….and thats fine….he’ll continue to improve….

but he still a good player….. no need to bench him…the only way he’ll get bbetter is if he continues to play…..

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  17. Hodad Says:

Yes, Edwards, and Winfield should be our starting safety tandem. Edwards range is ridiculous. Both have great instincts something we haven’t had on the back end for years. Two ball hawk safeties, they should never come off the field. Stick a fork in Justin Evans already. We can use that 1.3 million salary somewhere else. Doubt the kid ever plays again. Even if he does get healthy, where’s the need?

  18. admin Says:

Stick a fork in Justin Evans already.

    Who?

  19. Fernando Says:

For some reason Bunting is struggling out of place getting beat etc

  20. Joe in Michigan Says:

Glad to see Mike Edwards playing well, I’ve had high hopes for him.

  21. lowercaseg Says:

good in coverage thats 4 sure

  22. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Not sold on him just yet!! For sure want to see him out there more but looks more like he has been the receiver of a lot of luck!! The tip was great…. But last year he was out of position A LOT!! Not that he wasn’t playing good when he was in good position…. But man he got caught in the wrong one over and over …. For sure want to see more of him tho!! Exactly like Arians said in passing downs and take out whitehead

  23. Brandon Says:

Interesting stats on Profootballreference. SMB is giving up 85% completions on the season. Dean and Davis are fairing far better. They both allow less than 65%, I think Dean is around 55%. Anyways, when the season started, SMB was playing well… then he got hurt and he’s been in a downward spiral.

I can see a platoon coming with Whitehead and Edwards. Whitehead is excellent near the LoS and Edwards in coverage. I like them both but their strengths are opposites.

  24. duvalmike Says:

maybe play a little more Antoine Winfield in the slot and whitehead/ edwards at safety. not sure if Winfield would be better in the slot than SMB but i think it would be an interesting competition.

Nice Mike………..nice & keep the bow going forward. I knew you had it all along.
