“I Saw A Playoff Team”

October 24th, 2020

Ian Beckles likes what he sees.

Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles calls it like he sees it.

When he thinks a Bucs player or the team played like crap he says so. When a Bucs player or the team plays well, he says so.

For some reason this gets people bent. Guess they are conditioned to read the propaganda from Buccaneers.com where every year is a playoff year and everyone on the roster is a budding Pro Bowl player.

Beckles, despite the Bucs having a winning record entering the Green Bay game, was not impressed by their play. That changed last Sunday with the huge beatdown over the Packers.

Taking to his podcast, “In the Trenches,” Beckles really, really liked what he saw from the Bucs.

“That was Super Bowl-caliber football,” Beckles said. “I don’t blow smoke up nobody’s @sss. You have to prove to me first you can play. And the three previous victories the Buccaneers have had I think I have said the same thing: ‘OK, we won. Good, did some good things, did some bad things. That’s not playoff football.’

“I’m going to say this: After [the win over the Packers], the Buccaneers are 4-2, and the Buccaneers played playoff-style football. If you are going to talk about playing football that is going to get you into the playoffs, it is playing without deficiencies. And the Bucs didn’t have many deficiencies [Sunday].”

Beckles was even more impressed with who they pounded, not how they pounded them.

“They just outplayed the Packers in every aspect of the game,” Beckles said. Beckles didn’t even think the Chiefs could score 38 unanswered points on the Packers, much less the Bucs offense that has too often sputtered this season.

Beckles thought when Aaron Rodgers scored a touchdown and struck a Rick Rude pose to go up 10, the Bucs were in deep trouble.

Other observations from Beckles:

* “The Buccaneers are becoming that defense.”

* “Lavonte David’s defense is as good as anybody [in the league].”

* On Devin White: “Devin White looks like the best middle linebacker in football. That’s not me blowing smoke, people. That’s me putting the film on and seeing that.”

* On what the Bucs defensive coordinator is doing right: “Todd Bowles is doing a wonderful job of disguising blitzes, moving guys around.”

* The number of team sacks and picks the Bucs are racking up is “Serious business, now.”

* Finally, Beckles said, it looks like the Bucs have a running back. “We are doing wonderful things on both sides of the football. Running the football with Ronald Jones getting 100 yards a game just about every game. I’ve been begging for that. And here it is.”

* On a little-discussed fact why the Bucs have been such losers through the decades: “The last time the Buccaneers didn’t commit a penalty in a game you have to go all the way back to 1983. There’s a lot of losing in between there, people.”

Overall, Beckles likes the direction the Bucs are going.

“In the three wins previously, I didn’t see a playoff team,” Beckles said. “In the win [Sunday] I saw a playoff team.”

In retrospect – the Broncos win is looking better and better. They at minimum have a solid defense and remain extremely competitive even with all their stars out. The Chargers win looks better and better as obviously they are extremely competitive, and the Panthers are pretty damn good. The point is their 3 wins have been against pretty good teams. We aren’t talking about the jets, bengals, or any NFC East team

  2. August 1976 Buc Says:

They will continue to get better and better, enjoy the ride Buc Fans. The stench of the Den of depression is gone and the lost decade is gone. SUPERBOWL OR BUST!!! GO BUCS!!!!

  3. @Hands2theface Says:

The pose Rodgers did after the TD was actually a very funny reenactment of the Key & Peele comedy bit named McCringleberry’s Excessive Celebration

[Looked like Rick Rude’s signature pose to Joe.]

Totally agree with him. I’m not complaining about winning at all weather it’s a good looking win or a ugly win a win is a win but the win against the packers has to be the standard of winning against good teams not just the broncos or chargers type wins we gotta beat good teams and the bad teams we should destroy. Fire those cannons. Let’s go Bucs

I agree completely. NDOG wants to blast good ole Irish Tom Brady for being lucky. As a fellow Irishman I always embrace the “Luck of the Irish”. I’d rather have a “lucky” QB than an unlucky one.

Part of this year’s luck has been the way the schedule has fallen into place. I agree with GFTF…All three of the wins are against teams nobody will want to play the final six games of the season. We caught them all at just the right time and I do not count Carolina as an automatic win in our rematch.

    It’s all good…talent…coaching…and finally…something Buc fans haven’t seen a lot of…LUCK!!!

Michael thomas and sanders out for saints 👀

Carolina in new orleans but bridgewater very familiar with his third home

  7. ClwJB Says:

Very easy to see us sitting at 6-2 in two weeks, Raiders D is not great, Carr needs a run game and won’t have one against us – and Monday night at the GMen- love that matchup

Split the next 4 which is the toughest part of our schedule and we are 8-4 staring at MN, Det, Atl twice –

Looking very good right about now

“…Broncos win is looking better and better… The Chargers win looks better and better…”

Totally agree. Said the same thing after the Bucs beat the Chargers. I thought the Chargers looked good and it was not because the Bucs played poorly.

Now, the Bucs’ offense needs chemistry badly. ME is hurt; Godwin has not played much bc of injury; and now we have brand-new Brown. On top of all that, except for the Giants next week, we are going into the meat of our schedule: Saints, Panthers, Rams and Chiefs. The Bucs should be rocking by playoff time. But we need to win tomorrow and beat the Saints in 2 weeks – we need to win the NFCS!

  9. Casual Observer Says:

He had a different tune before the Packer game. Didn’t “see them going to the post season”. Just sayin … .

  10. Architek Says:

Man Ian is so flaky some times but he’s on point with these takes!

  11. Bob Says:

Is that Pam Bondi with Ian?

  12. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

Running game is making everything better. There is more rest time for the defense keeping them fresh. Now let’s keep blitzing to create 3 and outs.

    Go Bucs!!!

I met Pam Bondi at a Brandon Chamber Of Commerce Party, back before she was attorney general.
She is a very nice person, and a fellow Dog owner and lover.

    pam bondi very nice

  17. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

The last thing Pam Bondi and Rick Scott did on the way out of office was sign some nice RINO red-flag legislation.

    Traitors are everywhere.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

“Beckles didn’t even think the Chiefs could score 38 unanswered points on the Packers, much less the Bucs offense that has too often sputtered this season.”

Interesting observation, especially in light of the rest of what Ian said, which was almost entirely about the Bucs’ DEFENSE (5 mentions for the defense, 1 for RB & 1 for no penalties).

Wow, sounds like what it takes to ignite this offense is for our DEFENSE to quickly throttle the opposing offense, take their lunch money, and then feed our offense with it. Eleven TOs in 6 games leading to 55 pts scored thanks to COMPLIMENTARY FOOTBALL is a nice start.

  19. Mike Johnson Says:

Beckles is a regular jeckl-hyde guy. One minute he luvs the bucs and the next he pays a beautiful woman to…

  20. Go Bucs 72 Says:

It was 100% the Key & Peele skit about the excessive celebration penalty (3 hip thrusts) on Hingel McCringleberry. It may have resembled whatever Rick Rude does but that wasn’t what Rogers was doing. Do yourself a favor and go watch the skits. They are outstanding.

  21. TheBradyBunch Says:

I don’t know why so many give him grief. Beckles is a really really good analyst and is spot on imo.

  22. @Hands2theface Says:

Joe, it may have looked like Rick Rude but it was the McCringleberry skit. Rodgers even talked about it this past Tuesday on the Pat McAfee show. Not trying to argue, just inform.

  23. OriginalJud Says:

Gotta update that photo Joe. That jewelry commercial he’s on shows him to be looking more like grandpa
