Arians Takes Blame

October 9th, 2020

Confession.

Yes, when the Bucs took a 13-0 lead last night with seven minutes left in the first half, there were national NFL writers wondering on Twitter if Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians was going to run up the score on the Bears in payback for not hiring him last decade.

Aside from the obvious answer (Arians and Bears defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano are like blood-brothers), Arians really did have to apologize in the wee hours of the morning today for what happened in Chicago last night.

Arians took the bullet for his team playing awful football in the second half.

What could have been a game-winning drive that began on the 50 blew up in the Bucs’ faces with a blizzard of penalties few Bucs fans have seen since Kenyatta Walker left the team.

“It was poor execution,” Arians said. Penalties were “poor coaching. It was just poor coaching.”

To be fair, the Bucs were victims of two really bad flags that contributed to the loss. Both were against NFL sack king Shaq Barrett and both extended Bears drives.

Barrett was flagged for offsides on a third-down when replays clearly showed he was drawn offsides. Later, Shaq blasted Bears quarterback Nick Foles a hair after he released the ball. Shaq was flagged for a late hit even though Shaq was “this close” to jarring the ball loose.

i believe they took the week off and “wanged it” going into chicago…

with a talk thru without a walk thru on the plane ride over…

i expect a different team vs. green bay at home next week…

i believe teams are starting to take the approach going into thusday night games that they are football players and to just go play…

the nfl is not giving teams any time to rest or prepare for a thurday after sunday game…

the bucs wanged it, and it showed…

  2. August 1976 Buc Says:

In the midst of all the mistakes, if they make 2 first downs on the second to last time they had the ball, they still win. Whatever, on to the Green Bay Buzz saw that is coming. No pressure on Rodgers and it will be a long game.GO BUCS!!!

  3. DaBux Says:

Why in God’s name go deep from the 50 when RoJo was finally running the ball good? That would have been the time to go full ball control and force the Bears’ safeties up on to the line to open up the deep middle later on in the drive. I agree, this one was on BA.

  4. Tompa Says:

Bout to get routed by the Packers.

Season 1 or 2 games away from over.

Oh well just like every other year.
    Not surprised.

  5. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Before the season I thought the Bucs would go 4-4 the first half and 6-2 the second half for a total record of 10-6. I haven’t seen anything to change my mind about that prediction. I think they’ll lose to the Packers and Raiders then beat the Giants, and then we’ll see major improvement over the final eight games.

Also, it’s obvious the Bucs needs to draft a QB and a LT in the upcoming draft. Not a knock on Brady but he’s not too far away from being done. One year, maybe two, that’s it.

  6. JA Says:

Brady was obviously upset with another of the the temper driven stupid penalties by Ryan Jensen I think, at that point, Brady may have realized the difference between his old team and the Bucs. You can’t win close ball games with a lack of enforced discipline within the coaching ranks. If this were the Patriots, I wouldn’t be the least surprised if Belicheck sent Jensen packing today.

  7. Roy T. Buford Says:

I will say it: As of this morning, neither the Bears nor the Bucs have beaten a really good team this year.

The Bucs D really didn’t have a bad game and bad officiating can never supplant bad coaching and bad execution. I put most of this on the offense, and the offensive line to be specific. It’s too much to expect Wirfs to keep Mack at bay, and too often the Bears were allowed right into the backfield. We are lucky TB12 walked out of there. His bell must have been rung pretty good thinking he still had one more down when he threw his last pass of the game.

On a positive note, they are still in 1st place, even once the Saints beat the Chargers Monday. There is much healing needed, in more ways than one, before the Packers roll in here of their own bye week. This loss tastes worse than usual, and I expect they will not want to let this one happen again.

  8. August 1976 Buc Says:

Spot on JA This would not happen on the Pats. BA time to man up, and clean up the careless, and selfish actions that have nothing to do with winning games. I am not saying cut R Jensen, but there has to be accountability if they are going to win games. GO BUCS!!!

  9. Alanbucsfan Says:

The biggest play of game was when trailing 17-16, Bucs had a 1st down on Bears 16 with 6 minutes left and K Mack made DSmith look like a HS tackle and easily sacked Brady. A td on that drive instead of Bucs settling for fg would have been HUGE.
Foles said it best when describing the game- “It reminded me of like, a good old fistfight from Philly. Now, I get to do it in Chicago. “

  10. Robert Says:

Mad Dog Russo has been saying for years. Every time you think this team is on a roll they crap on their shoes. The coaching, the offensive play calling, the defensive calls, the penalties were a joke last night. With the Packers coming to town in 10 days we got reminded that this team isnt elite at any level.

  11. ModHairKen Says:

They did not lose because of two bad calls by the officials. They lost because the players played poorly over and again and the coaches made errors and the Bears played hard.

It easily could have been a win. It was a loss. It’s done.

Ice up. Sleep. Get ready for GB.

  12. Buczilla Says:

Gotta expect some home cooking on the road from refs. Dean dropped two catchable int’s, stupid a$$ penalties, blah, blah, blah. Wirfs looked human too. It sucks man, but it’s not like we weren’t in the game. If this team is really up to snuff, they will be hungry as all hell against the Packers.

  13. TheBucsAnthem Says:

This should be no surprise to bucs fans

    * Brady had no weapons

    * Undisciplined players

    * Bad coaching overall

This whole season has been a complete mirage to fans because the Bucs haven’t beaten anyone yet

….and the teams they did beat sucked and they didn’t exactly dominate them either.

After the loss from the Packers coming up……….makes the Bucs a sub.500 team.

  14. ItzOK Says:

    Arians deserves the blame.

Bucs were dominating and instead of sticking with the run before the half he gets cute, bears turnover on big hit, and they score to take the lead.

Bucs have the ball with under 3 minutes and again he can’t stick with running forcing bears to use their timeouts. only 19 seconds off the clock.

Put Donovan Smith on Mack one on one. After Mack got going double him.

Penalties are on the coach and the bucs self destructed with those penalties.

Love the last play for the bears by the wy where shaq barrett is in pass coverage 20 yards down the field. How about using your best player to ruch the passer and have another person cover the back.

The sheer stupidity of this coaching staff. They had this game dominated and instead just self implode

I am so sick of Arians ineptitude. .

  15. Bucsfanman Says:

We can’t beat ourselves and expect to win. It was a poor showing all the way around.
I’m really getting tired of Donovan Smith. They had better start secession planning at LT or that will continue to be a weak link.
Talk about high drama too! I guess it comes with the territory.
“Why didn’t Tom shake his hand?” “What’s wrong with Tom?” “Foles is undefeated against Tom!”

Oh, and coach, get this mess cleaned up.

  16. BUC CHEEKS Says:

That was a nightmare!!! I woke up confused… Part booze – part disbelief! That hurt, yet felt so familiar. Ughhhh!!!! F it… Maybe it’s a wake up call… However, definitely not confident against the Packers after that!

  17. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Byron is a schizophrenic play caller; is BA calling any plays because sometimes he will call a play like the screen to gronk and its amazing and then other times it belongs in the CFL. And 76 is dog crap and might as well throw D5 Cappa in the mix they are going to get Gabbert in as the starting QB real soon

  18. Allbuccedup Says:

    Its a bucs life.

  19. rrsrq Says:

Tanner dropped a passed early, Brady overthrew Tanner wide open in the end zone – if not for potential flag when “sneak” got blasted, they wouldn’t even called that a catch and fumble. Donovan Smith doing Donavan Smith things, Ryan Jensen doing Ryan Jensen things. Carlton Davis doing Carlton Davis things (but he did have another INT), Bowles channeling his inner Mike Smith with all the cushion. Refs doing refs things- not only the two penalties called on Shaq that should’ve not been called, but the no face mask call on punt return they missed. What happened to Tyler Johnson in the second half

  20. Ed Says:

Look at it from the bright side, Green Bay is due for a letdown and the Bucs have been more physical at home. They will need to play 2 full halves of football and certainly can step up against Rodgers. I don’t see the Packers as unbeatable.

The Bucs aren’t as bad as they were last night and Green Bay doesn’t have a defense like Chicago has. Clearly the Bucs offense will have to play well. With 10 days to prepare and heal, they will get a chance to be healthier on offense.

Gronk is starting to look like he’s getting into football shape. Protect Brady and this offense is good. Feed him to the dogs like they did last night and he has to be more concerned with not getting hurt than holding on to the ball.

  21. orlbucfan Says:

BAzz needs to take the blame period. I could only watch the first third, and I saw him call that play on 4th and 1 with the Bucs on their 15. Are you kidding me? He didn’t do it again with the game on the line? He’s not the only Methuselah complete with brain farts guiding this team.

  22. Steven Kenneth Allen Says:

Was that game coached by the Trump administration last night?????????? WTF?????

  23. SmoothBayRider Says:

The Bucs Anthem . Do you know what the prefix “sub” means ? Or Are you really that bad at math ? A loss to the Packers puts them at .500 , not Sub .500 .

This is an example of how stupid the #3 nuthuggers are .

  24. Bobby M. Says:

I said earlier this week…our secondary has been exposed. Everyone is going over the top on us, the TE got over the top which from a speed perspective, how does that happen? For whatever reason, if we dont have a lot of film on the QB in their respective system, we tend to struggle in the secondary. I dont know if those guys are simply not studying in their off time or if the coaches go vanilla but we dont seem to have any effective adjustments. When we do play back, teams keep running that receiver into the flat for chunks of yds.

  25. Rayjay1122 Says:

I have defended BA time and time again. I have been excited about TB12, I have been optimistic about this season but this morning I am ashamed of this coaching staff and this team as a whole. Undisciplined underachievers collectively so far.

The only glaring weakness this team has is LT and if they do not replace this dude ASAP, we are done. Brady sucks when under constant pressure like last night.

  26. Ndog Says:

We were told we just have to eliminate the turnovers and we’ll win every game right Bruce?

We were told we were going to upgrade a quarterback to a guy who dominated the fourth quarter right Bruce?

We were told all the sacks were because the previous quarterback held the ball too long right Bruce?

We were told we’re going to get a quarterback who doesn’t embarrass us by forgetting what down it is right Bruce?

  27. Erick Says:

What a crappy way to start a Friday. Such a frustrating loss. Doesn’t matter who QBs this team. Dumb, undisciplined players will cause this team to be average at best despite the talent.

  28. Ndog Says:

What is just the most priceless thing I can possibly imagine is seeing every single person that called various things excuses when people mention them for Jameis are now doing the exact same thing for Brady. It’s not him it’s the penalties, it’s not him it’s the coaching, it’s not him it’s the offensive line, it’s not him it’s the refs! Boy you guys are some hypocritical folks aren’t you, unbelievable but not really as this is exactly what I expected have a great day.

  29. Ndog Says:

I could have sworn someone on this very blog said yes we might not have as many turnovers but we also need to still score points.

    I wonder who that was?

    4 field goals anyone?

Hey at least we have a kicker that can make them all now imagine if the previous quarterback had that luxury?

  30. Bucsfanman Says:

^^^”And now for the emboldened troll hour. Sponsored by 3rd-string Hurricane maker mix and apple turnovers. Because everyone loves a turnover.”

Brace yourself folks, they’re coming out today.

We had a five-year run of some of THEE most embarrassing moments in football history. Nothing will ever top “eating W’s”!

  31. Erick Says:

If I was Brady, I would’ve retired right then and there in locker room.

“Boys that was a joke. Not gonna let you clowns hurt my legacy in anyway.”

Take pads off and take a separate flight to one of my many homes other than Tampa

  32. Ndog Says:

Yeah call whoever that doesn’t get brainwashed a Troll. How about open your eyes and realize you got PLAYED!!!

  33. Ndog Says:

Also classy move walking off the field without congratulationing the other team.

    Like I said spoiled rotten!!!!

  34. Jmarkbuc Says:

Largest coaching staff in the free world and a team with no discipline…

Too many cooks spoil the broth. Is BA too busy being the “cool teacher”?

  35. Bucsfanman Says:

Not brainwashed, a Bucs fan. The only ones “played” around here are the ones still holding on to players that aren’t here anymore.
    It’s football dude.

    One word: DECAF!

  36. Athlete Says:

Bucsfanman,,, I believe that thinking that you had a fourth down after fourth down was already played is a little more embarrassing 😳

  37. alaskabuc Says:

He absolutely should be taking all the blame in this game. If I didn’t know any better I would have thought Lovie and Mike Smith were back in charge watching that sh!t show. Boring, uncreative, lack of imagination offense, complemented by Charmin soft secondary.

  38. Youngbucs Says:

I told y’all ndog wouldn’t have any new material till we lost a gm. Tht win streak was killing him 😂.

  40. Bucsfanman Says:

Athlete- Oh no, I give you that it was quite embarrassing, especially from Brady. But to say THAT was more embarrassing than previous QB antics?!
No. Rewatch that infamous moment and I dare you not to cringe!
It’s not even about him anyway. It’s about THIS team! THIS team was not good enough last night and was embarrassing to watch. Even though we were in it the whole way too! That’s what makes it sting even more.
    We beat ourselves…again!

  41. Ndog Says:

    That’s all you got YoungBucs?

Can dish it out but can’t take it uh?

  42. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Arians needs to accept responsibility by saying…..”OK guys, I am going to punish myself by not taking any days off between games…..I’ll be coaching you how to do your jobs better so you’ll be working with me….see you at practice tomorrow.”

  43. Anonymous Says:

Did anyone see a few times we the D didn’t even line up correctly I saw lvd push d white to his assignment and smb was out of alignment pre snap too

  44. UKBuccaneer Says:

Don’t get too high after W’s. Don’t get too down after L’s. It’s a long season, and I expect the bucs to play up to Green Bay’s level next week as they played down to the Bears last night.

When this team ends the playoff drought in January, there’ll be some posters here pretending like they never quit on their team.

  45. Anonymous Says:

The players are not supposed to shake hands after the games anymore. Remember covid nut dog? The league will be cracking down on that now.

  46. El Buco Realisto Is a Dicko and NDogTurd is a Crybaby and TheBucsAnus and LovesJameisTighties are Trolls Says:

Not surprised the trolls are in high gear today. That what trolls do.
Meanwhile, REAL fans are not happy today. Unlike the trolls, we’re not giddy with joy saying “I told you so”. It’s just #3 nuthuggers at their finest.
Let’s heal up and get ready for Green Bay.

  47. stpetebucsfan Says:

OFFSIDES!!! Not just once but one player did it TWICE. What possible excuse is there for an offsides in a stadium emptied by the Covid?

Seriously!! Where is the accountability for this. Once was unforgivable…twice is just mind numbing. I like D Smith but those are simply head up the rectum plays. We got away with the first one but the overall stat is not an aberration.

We now LEAD the league in penalties both in number called and the yardage lost is waaay at the top of the league. It’s double what is average!

  48. Roy T. Buford Says:

Ndog, here is what you fail to see:
The Bucs would have been 1-3 at best heading into last night with Winston’s average turnovers per game all by himself. On average with Winston, that would equate to another 9 -10 points off of turnovers by game’s end. The Bucs would not be in a position to blow by D. They would not have been in it with 7-8 minutes left. No one has said Winston was the only problem. But he was the biggest problem. Check yo sheet. He wasn’t ballin.

  49. 813bucboi Says:

  50. 813bucboi Says:

BA embarrassed himself and the team last night…..

    GO BUCS!!!!

  51. JamoistSucks Says:

Npuppy is back with a vengeance. Sadly, some of his nonsense turned out to be the truth. Even the GOAT looks lost in this terrible system. Can’t wait for a team dumb enough to hire BL as a head coach. And BA can go with him. I’ve heard enough excuses. It’s a Bucs life.

  52. SufferingSince76 Says:

Thanks Ndog for your continued wisdom and support of the Bucs. You’re a real class act.

  53. RICHARD weeks Says:

I am starting to believe Ndog is actually jameis Winston’s agent..He is pissed his client is a third string quarterback that every team passed on to be a starter..no worries Ndog the XFL is coming back..

  54. JameisAlmighty Says:

Terrible Tom Brady, Loser Licht, and Blundering Bruce are the reason the Bucs are in this situation. Brutal Brady played the Bucs to play in nice weather while he moved into his retirement home. Terrible Tom isn’t leading this team anywhere except to more disappointment. Brutal Brady even has the benefit of a kicker who makes kicks. If Jameis had a competent kicker to make up for the incompetence of Jason Idiot Licht, then we’d all still be Jameis fans.

  55. El Buco Realisto Is a Dicko and NDogTurd is a Crybaby and TheBucsAnus and LovesJameisTighties are Trolls Says:

“But if Jameis, blah, blah, blah……….”.

Gee, there’s something we haven’t heard before.

  56. bucsrschmucs Says:

Shmuco buco bruce is leading the bucs down to schmucksville again. Horrible play calling, none disciplined players, idiotic blunders with Jenson on online, and a Q B who is probably wondering why in hell he is even here.
