About That Offensive Line

October 4th, 2020

Strong game.

After the game, of course Bucco Bruce Arians was effusive about his team’s character and not giving up when it would have been easy to mentally pack it in.

After lauding his team’s desire to win, Arians also raved about the Bucs’ offensive line. He’s got a helluva point.

Consider RoJo ran for 111 yards. About time. And the most impressive runs for RoJo were his Mike Alstott-like haystack-moving runs right up the gut.

No running back can do that alone. That was grit by the big uglies on the line.

Also notice that park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady, hardly a Lamar Jackson, did not get sacked once.

Yes, Brady took an ugly shot in the first half, but that was thanks to Shady McCoy’s full-blown matador block where he fully whiffed on a pass rusher. Actually stepped aside even.

“The whole offense was very confident,” Bucs guard Ali Marpet said on the Buccaneers Radio Network after the game. “I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but I think we ran the ball efficiently.”

He was right.

The Bucs are 3-1. And Joe doesn’t think that would be the case if the Bucs’ offense didn’t get the blocking from an offensive line that is too often mocked and scolded.

They were really awesome. Solid. Licking chops.

  2. Buczilla Says:

They usually deserve to be mocked, but the o line and Rojo played their butts off today. I’d love to see Vaughn get even more involved moving forward.

  3. Buddha Says:

Joe, agree with your assessment of the offensive line. But your constant complaining about RoJo is way off line. He ran hard and made a lot of his yards on second-effort. He has improved each year and his runs helped give Brady the extra time on play-action. When you average 5,6 yards a carry, you’ve had an outstanding day.

  4. RodStiffington Says:

    Wirfs dominated Bosa today!

  5. Doctor Stroud Says:

The 1 to 3 yard runs were no less critical because they set up the play fakes. Good job, Rojo, and congratulations on the 111 yard game!

  6. Rayjay1122 Says:

With all of the injury issues, I am worried about the short few days before we have to play a tough Bears team. The Defense is going to have to step it up a bunch.

  7. Op Says:

I think Bosa touched Brady once all game. Wirfs is a future all-pro.

  8. tampabaybucfan Says:

We ran the ball & they couldn’t ……Charges 23 carries for 46 yards…..you simply can’t run on our Defense.

And, I agree…..about the constant bashing of Rojo…..like I said many times….if he had just 15 carries a game he would have achieved 1008 yards last year….

He gets the ball 20 times and gets 111 yards……very nice.

  9. DaBux Says:

Wirfs had a few rookie mistakes, but damn did he smoke some folks today. Good game by the OL.

  10. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

    Bosa played today?!?!?

Op…..Wirfs was the right pick in the draft!

    Go Bucs!!!!

Here’s a shoutout to the informed fans on here. 3-1 and Brady is lucky he didn’t get his azz creamed. Defense won this one. It is a major announcement to the rest of the league. Defense will have to carry the team cos look at all the offensive players who are sidelined. OJ Howard?

  12. Wesley Says:

    They were good not great.

  13. Jeagan1999 Says:

Oline played hard and did a good job keeping TB12’s jersey clean! Kudos to that group!

  14. Buc4ever Says:

Wirfs is the real deal. He is bigger and just as fast as Bosa. Fantastic job for a rookie who has only played 4 games in the nfl. He will only get better each week.

  15. Casual Observer Says:

    No sacks of Brady.

  16. BuccoDav Says:

Joe says: “Consider RoJo ran for 111 yards. About time.”

If JBF was around in the mid to late 90’s, Joe would have tried to run Ronde Barber and John Lynch out of town…

  17. Jersey buc Says:

How did the D carry this team today? Herbert shredded them on mid direction plays and bombs. O put them up D let up a huge play. Now don’t get me wrong they made plays when they had 2 but they did not win the game today for them. Brady and the O was clicking in the second half

  18. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

O line is strong… They have their weakness and it will show in big games but they can get you through!! Words is a really solid player but looked to have trouble with a speedy bosa today!! But all in all he held his own!! The oline has been good for awhile but they for some reason just have bad days!! Where the technique is off, footwork, commination???…. Maybe that will be put behind them as the season goes on!?!

    Marpet is a beast

The offense scored 38 points today with Brady throwing 5 TD passes to five different receivers, despite Godwin out, Evans hurt, and OJ injured later. But the defense won this one??? I am so confused.

    orlbucfan might be on drugs…
OJ’s production can easily be replaced.
The defense wasn’t exactly something we could rely on today.

  22. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

I like how Rojo often waited behind Marpet or Jensen for the holes to open up, then he would shoot through! He didn’t do that last year.

  23. unbelievable Says:

So when the running game finally succeeds, we praise the o-line, but when it sputters, we blame the running backs?

    Lol.

    Got it.

  24. unbelievable Says:

@BuccoDav – yup you nailed it.

    Consider this:

If RoJo has just 12 touches per game last (which is nothing) he would have had 1,000 yards for the season.

  25. unbelievable Says:

*had just 12 touches per game last year *

  26. Bird Says:

You got rojo and fournette. 2 different styles of runners.

Here is a thought cause both runners have excelled in different games. Neither is a complete back so one may be better against team x compared to team y

Each gets the almost all touches per 1st or 2nd quarter. Break up by quarter in 1st half. Doesnt matter who plays 1st or 2nd

Whoever has more success In first half gets 75 % of touches for entire second half. Win win

  27. 813bucboi Says:

All the BL haters quiet right now…lol….

Bowles gotta tighten up…defense still giving up big plays

    GO BUCS

  28. Bucc941 Says:

Cappa is a liability. He’s going to get Brady injured. Don’t believe me? Watch the film it never lies.

  29. adam from ny Says:

wirfs is like the best ol pick since the guy on the colts like 2 years ago…

    quenten nelson…

wirfs is looking that good in my book

  30. Siege The Bay Says:

Nobody gives Donavan Smith credit when we have a no sack game. Its always someone else getting the praise, and him getting the hate when we have bad games. Hasn’t missed a game in his whole career.

Shoutout to Donovan and the whole offensive line. Got the job done today

  31. Colonel_mp Says:

Wirfs was amazing on Bosa all day. Stood him up at the line on a couple of pass rushes. One bad penalty on a FS late in the 4th which resulted in the FG to clinch. GREAT GAME WIRFS!

  32. RobB Says:

Donovan Smith is still the absolute worst left tackle in the NFL. Too many plays where you see the QB getting demolished and there is Smith with his hands on his hips disgusted with himself…

  33. Mrs. Entertainment Says:

Jersey Buc, I think you had it right: offensive carried the defence on Sunday; not the other way around.
