“You Should Be P!ssed Off”

September 11th, 2020

Bucs DC Todd Bowles.

Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is a cool cat. Whether he is happy as can be or so upset he wants to break things, you would rarely know. Cool as a cucumber.

But he sort of admitted to being PO’ed yesterday, or at least his defensive players should be, he said.

The Bucs travel to New Orleans to play the slimy Saints to open the season Sunday. Last year the Bucs lost twice to the slimy Saints.

Shaq Barrett says the defense “didn’t have no chance.” Let’s just say Bowles’ has a too-fresh memory of those two games.

“The biggest thing that sticks out to me is that we lost the game(s),” Bowles said. “All nine games stick out to me in the loss column, there are no two games that separate the others. You don’t like to lose as a competitor.

“You learn from each experience and grow from it. You should be p!ssed off just to play ball anyway. [His Bucs defenders have] gotten better mentally. But you have to put it out on the field obviously. Every game is an important game and this is the first game so it is important.”

Can the defense be mad enough to continue to haunt the slimy Saints in their run of bad luck on opening weekends? The Saints have lost five of their last six games to open a season.

Right now, Bowles is concerned with one element of his defense, he said, and Bowles won’t have any insight into whether his worries are valid until the game starts Sunday.

“Well, the tackling part of it,” Bowles responded when asked what jumps out at him with the abbreviated offseason this summer. “You don’t get to tackle as much coming in at the time we did. But that was everybody in the league.”

The 2019 Bucs played the slimy Saints twice in their first 10 games, before the Bucs defense seemingly turned the corner.

In the first contest in the Superdome, the Bucs allowed a sinful 457 yards (third-most yards allowed last year) in a 31-24 loss. The defense played much better the second time in Week 10 at the Den of Depression, coughing up 328 yards. The Bucs allowed more yards than that in just one game the rest of the season (373 against Atlanta in Week 17).

Its strange to think, that our defense actually has more continuity than our offense.

    12-4

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  3. BillyBucFan Says:

Sad to think that our defense gave up 100 yards fewer and lost worse
Only takes 2 initials to describe what happened: JW

  4. Hodad Says:

Being mad won’t make a difference. Playing good sound fundamental defense will.

  5. Casual Observer Says:

Our front 7 is as good or better than any other team.

One thing we can bet on is the Saints will be going after Winfield if he indeed starts Sunday. Which is why I bet the Bucs wil change up the defense a lot and he may less over more…as of all the positions other than QB, being a DB as a rookie and with no preseason has got to be the toughest thing to do in Football.

“Flawed team building by Jason Gump once again

After Brady our next important acquisition should have been a shut down corner

Our 3 cornerback stooges are green and gullible

It’s a passing league and all playoff teams have a capable #1 corner”

    roy

    they might…BUT…

KC returned their starters on defense and started a rookie CB last night against the texans…..watson went at him early and he held his own…chris jones turned it up….honey badger turned it up….rookie had a great game and picked watson off….kid was a 4th rounder…..

im not saying the kid is going to be in the HOF, but he did his job for 1 game….and thats all we’re asking winfield to do…know his assignment and do his job week1….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

I think this article brings up an interesting question: do football players (and athletes in general maybe) play better angry? I apologize in advance for opening up this can of worms, but wasn’t that one of the biggest knocks on GMC?

  11. bucsfan951 Says:

i gotta say, i agree with kobe on his take.

i wish the bucs would’ve brought in a true #1 corner instead of relying on what we have. i am not sold on our cbs. i hope i am wrong (i will love to admit i am wrong in this case)

It’s really funny how right after those 10 games VHIII was cut like an anchor dragging a ship down.

  13. Roy T. Buford Says:

@Bucboi…that’s awesome to hear. Hope that comes the Bucs way!

  15. Will Says:

Yes that rookie corner last night played great. He had the luxury of a great pass rush as well. We’ve gotta get pressure on Brees right up the gut. Get him off his spots, hit him when we can and make him uncomfortable. I’m on board that we need a lock down corner but I’m hoping one of these young guys is that corner.

    Jason:

Some do, some don’t. There’s a fine line between “playing angry” and “playing out of control.” Different strokes for different folks.

Ray Lewis played angry. Lee Roy Selmon played like he just walked out of church. Both were among the best whoever played.

“$10 mill to a retired buffoon WWE wrestler in a already competent and talented tight end group

This part time player will play maximum 8 games. $10 million dollars cash grab

Goof will be impersonating mascot Captain Fear than a competent and committed football player

Gump, why have you forsaken us”

    Kobe Faker

  18. 813bucboi Says:

why are folks talking about a lock down CB?

who’s the niners lockdown CB?…who’s KCs lockdown CB?…Packers?….

our secondary is solid…young but solid…

    SHAQ&JPP stay healthy…nelson produces…LVD&DW get pressure…they’ll be fine!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  19. 813bucboi Says:

gotta draft and develop your own shutdown CB….unless you want to throw away 1st round draft picks…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  20. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

They better tackle well Sunday because the Saints running back can take it to the house, if you miss him.
I bite my nails every time Kamara touches the ball.

  21. Jmarkbuc Says:

    813

    You mean like Vern?

  22. JimmyJack Says:

Chris agreed. And that’s precisely why you draft a D.White. If he is worth his draft status then he will step up and make his presence known against top players like Kamara.

Last year against the Saints he was bad. I’ll give him a rookie pass. This year no excuses. This is a big game for the franchise ……Whites gonna be good but if he cant bring it against the best in the league he’s nothing special.

    GO BUCS!!

  23. BuucccNASTY Says:

5 of 6 losers of opening season games.. but wait, I’m pretty sure that means Jameis NEVER won an opening season game lol FitzMagic was 1 and 0 so I got faith Brady will follow suit

  24. Brandon Says:

Kobe… go away, you dishonest buffoon. You’re full of hot air among other things. You were supposed to go when RoJo proved you a fool… but like a certain cowboy from Brokeback, you can’t quit … you really should.

Our green corners… Dean and Davis were both top 5 in passes defended last season and were the ONLY duo to allow QBs 50% or less completions against them. Yeah, they’re terrible. SMB led all rookies in INTs. Nah, that’s just you. Go away, crack baby.
