“The Only Difference Is… “

September 15th, 2020

Bold take.

It seems that Max Kellerman of BSPN is of the mind to think the Bucs may have made a massive mistake.

The professional hollerer took to the airwaves of BSPN for his hollering show “First Take,” which he co-hosts with screamin’ Stephen A. Smith. There on Monday, Kellerman declared to the world that park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady is finished. Kaput. Over. Done.

Then he went on to say the following, which Joe is confident that some Bucs fans will decry as heresy.

“If this was last year and Jameis [threw picks], we’d all be rolling our eyes, right?” Kellerman began. “The only difference is Jameis would have a whole lot of yards. And maybe some more touchdowns to go with the two costly interceptions.”

Wait a minute. Is Kellerman trying to suggest that Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston got more production than the six-time Super Bowl-winning Brady?

Joe sort of gets what Kellerman is trying to say, but he’s not going about it the right way. If the Bucs won, only a dedicated hater would be talking about two picks.

And no, Joe doesn’t believe Brady is toast.

  1. Lamarcus Says:

Brady look like straight trash. Yea he made a couple of throws but it doesn’t look good at all.

  2. tbbucs3 Says:

Its still way too early but BA’s offense (combined with a bad Bucs line) is incredibly hard for a non mobile QB to play in as opposed to the system friendly Josh McDaniels offense in New England.

Maybe Jameis was the better suited quarterback for the Bucs this year?

  3. Craig Says:

Jameis isn’t gone because of the picks. He is gone because he regressed during the season. It looked like he was going to make it work and then lost the last two games, badly.

Maybe Brady was overwhelmed during the first game. He will figure it out, hopefully soon. The big question is the play call. Maybe it was vanilla for Brady’s sake, but it looked a lot like last season’s crud.

Brady should be grabbing the bull by the horns, let’s see what it does.

  4. HeyItsAdam Says:

You know I don’t want to say “I told ya so,” but…..

actually, I do want to say it.

    I was right. Again.

Brady didn’t fix the running game. Didn’t fix the OL. Didn’t fix the pass D. Didn’t fix the bonehead-idiot-moron penalties.

You ID-10-Ts who ran Jameis threw the baby out with the bathwater.

  5. PuertoRicanBucFan Says:

Max Kellerman knows absolutely 0 about football. He is a boxing guy nothing more nothing less.

  6. Bucnjim Says:

There is another factor no one is talking about which is an injured Mike Evans. He went from doubtful to starting in less than a week. He had a very hard time with getting off the line and when he did he was slow through the entire route. Probably should have let him sit because he was just a decoy most of the game. The Saints knowing he couldn’t get deep crowded the line of scrimmage.

  7. PuertoRicanBucFan Says:

and to say Brady won’t be successful here or whatever negative nancy crap you’re posting youre showing that you know less than Max Kellerman does about this sport. They have had 0 offseason to get the chemistry down. Nobody had us winning that game or the division in Bradys 1st year for that matter. The Saints were 13-3 2 seasons in a row and have been together in the same scheme since 2006. They don’t need an offseason. We will he in the playoffs via wildcard and none of you clowns better be saying “see i told you we would get it together by the 3nd of the season!”

  8. Marine Buc Says:

I’m more disgusted and disappointed with LT Donovan Smith than I am Tom Brady.

  9. Joe Says:

They have had 0 offseason to get the chemistry down.

Bucs had less of an offseason than the Cardinals? Or the Panthers? Or the Bengals? Sure about that?

Kyler Murray didn’t seem to have any issues with timing with DeAndre Hopkins. Teddy Bridgewater didn’t seem to have any timing issues with his new receivers (and new team). Joe Burrow never played in the NFL before and he was OK.

Funny, Joe thought the Bucs looked sharp as a tack on the first two series.

  10. JimmyJack Says:

I actually thought Brady looked good on Sunday…..In terms of age. His arm still looks live to me. I thought he looked younge TD then Brees who looked scared to sling it downfield.

Brady still played like crap, dont get me wrong.

That pick 6 was unforgivable. He was brought in to be better then that. He’s supposted to be a bonafide leader, yeah well, that’s not how you lead……..I always refrained from blaming just the QB for a loss but Brady has higher standards. The loss is on him.

I’m not too worried about it. I’m guessing Brady gonna want to prove he’s better then that. With it being his first game here in a new city its understandable it could get him off his game…….If he’s the leader we all think he is determination will take over and he will make us all forget about Game 1.

    GO BUCS!!!

  11. Joe Says:

I’m more disgusted and disappointed with LT Donovan Smith than I am Tom Brady.

    Yes.

  12. Mitch Says:

I think the offensive line is the real culprit. They could run block or pass block very well.

  13. anderson Fa Gonzalez Says:

i love all the media overeacting to our first game especially Max Kellerman who has been a Tom Brady hater for the last 6 years

  14. BridleOaks Buc Says:

Kellerman is a tool…Straight up can’t listen to the guy, let alone give credence to anything that comes out of his pie hole

  15. Sesteprenelicus Says:

It’s reminiscent of the idiots that get half an inch more of rain in a year and say we are going to be 80 feet underwater by 2050.

Sample sizes of 1 are not exactly telling.

  16. BucEmUp Says:

The bias is mind dumbing and pathetic. Jameis will make this franchise look like the dumbest on the planet if he ever starts for the saints. Leftwich will keep this team in its losing ways against good teams( and lrobably bad team as well)

He sucks and has never been succesful as a play caller.Arains has but hes loafing his way into retirement. Same playbook but two totally different mindsets.

  17. Buc4ever Says:

Other Than the o-line, secondary, penalties, bad coaching, and running game the Bucs looked great. Lol. Seriously, leadfoot Smith has to go and the online needs better blocking schemes. Think it’s Also time to change the offensive play calling also. The 90’s style plays are not working…

  18. Coburn Says:

Actually had impression he could still make the throes based on time the protection was there and he was on same page. Mostly just a bad game and out of sync. Too early to say anything at this point

  19. zzbuc Says:

Max Kellermann should work for TMZ…he can take Bayless with him…Tabloid journalism…..good for nothing!!!!

  20. Bobby M. Says:

Arians worked with Manning…..who was never known to be mobile. Game 1 with live bullets didn’t go as hoped but I feel confident Arians and Brady will communicate on what he liked and didn’t, they’ll adjust and things will be a bit smoother with a team more on the same offseason level as us. The Panthers simply aren’t on the same level as the Saints no matter how you slice it. If we play disciplined, should get ourselves to 1-1.

  21. JimmyJack Says:

Buc4ever…..Your comment made me laugh but I disagree about the secondary.

Dean had one mistake and otherwise played well…..And I think we may just have some talent behind him if/when he makes another mistake and gets himself benched.

But all in all we shut down Thomas and Bress had nothing more then a generic day.

I thought the secondary was the best thing from Sunday because it was a huge question mark that now seems to have been answered

Bunting may have played the best game of any Buccaneer if it weren’t for David……And if Carlton keeps playing like that we might just have to use the term “shut down” when talking about him.

  22. bojim Says:

Let’s give him another game shall we?

  23. Godlovesbucs Says:

Joe, while i agree that those teams looked better, that is comparing apples to oranges.

First, the cardinals have more continuity. Murrays second year in a system is a huge bonus that brady doesnt have.

Second, the opponents that the panthers and bengals faced were not close to being on the siants d level. Both raiders and chargers boast a very average d and team. If derwin james was healthy i would say they are fairly close to saints level, but not even close without him.

  24. taylor Says:

    Smith is terrible

  25. Ra'Shad Brown Says:

Seems like people was expecting to go undefeated. Bucs were going to win in a heartbreaking fashion. Mike Edwards trying to cover that kick is what did us in.

  26. SlyPirate541 Says:

Easy. Slow your roll, everyone. It’s one game. No QB + New System + No Preseason. Let’s get 4 games into the season before jump ship.

  27. CrackerBall Says:

    What a bunch of nonsense…

The real mistake was made, at the 2015 NFL Draft, by taking Jameis Winston and wasting 5 years of this franchise trying to make a diamond from a lump of coal.

Give Tom Brady more than one week before saying something as stupid as Tom Brady is done. Hot take idiot.

  28. JimmyJack Says:

Godloves….I think you are giving a little bit too much praise to the Saints D…….Especially their secondary.

The Saints secondary has been getting burnt and scalded for years now. Granted, not as bad as the Bucs have over the years but still……Nothing special

  29. EA Says:

Brady will be fine, bucs have to figure out how to deflate some footballs, Brady is not used to throwing a tight spiral with an inflated football.

  30. Stanglassman Says:

Maybe Jameis did turn the corner and only played poorly the last few games because he was playing without his top two WRs and was gutting out too many injures himself.

  31. Alanbucsfan Says:

The running game was not bad
The 2 picks negated drives where more rushing yards would’ve been had.
Turnovers, poor execution, poor play calling/reads – Saints weren’t great but they made less mistakes.

  32. Of course Says:

If Winston is so great why is he 3rd string on the bench Lamarcus?

    Because everyone is racist?

Why isn’t he starting somewhere if he’s so great?

  33. Rayjay1122 Says:

Anyone know what the YPC on rushing attempts was on left vs right? Just curious because I would guess much better on the right behind Wirfs and Gronk.

  34. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Turnover differential
Every team except Dallas and San Francisco won

    New Orleans +3
    Washington. +3
    Baltimore. +2
    Jacksonville. +2
    LA Chargers. +2
    New England. +2
    Seattle +2
    Chicago +1
    Dallas. +1
    Green Bay +1
    Kansas City. +1
    Pittsburgh. +1
    San Francisco +1
    Tennessee +1

  35. Bucsfanman Says:

Some of you posters border on manic. One bad game and “Brady’s toast!” Against an NFC powerhouse, no less! It’s such a joke.

  36. Mike Says:

Saints are a tough and well coached team. Bucs did not play disciplined football. I expect things will improve from here though.

  37. RICHARD weeks Says:

The Doom and Gloom crowd is out in full force after one game..wouldnt expect anything less from the media and fans.

  38. StatGuy Says:

Not a fan of the play calling or the formations they were called out of

  39. TSmitty3000 Says:

The offensive line problems are magnified because Brady can’t escape sacks at his age. That’s understandable. Arians and company must adjust it to Brady.

  40. Mike Johnson Says:

Bucs fans were and are both desperate and delusional. What in the hell made you guys think..a 43 yr washed up GOAT was going to deliver you. He has had his days. Then to throw crap on the cake, he convinced the organization to being along his sidekick who has not..completed an entire season since 2011. I told you all back in March brady was not the QB for us. Just keep watching. sure we will win a few games. But we wasted 50 mil on a has been and his sidekick.

  41. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

I think that the O-line coach & Leftwich should take some credit for that loss. Leftwich is predictable & the O’line has not been good last year or last game. Those that are putting it all on Brady are idiots.

  42. stpetebucsfan Says:

I hope this Brady is done meme explodes this week. I can almost see the smoke rising over Davis Island from Brady’s ears.

Go ahead Max and the rest and REALLY pisss him off!!!

As if Brady wasn’t motivated enough!

And can we give it up JW fluffers. Comparing Brady to JW is like hosting a beauty competition and comparing Lizzo to Halle Berry. Lizzo is MUCH younger…she has a beautiful face, great voice…but she’s NO Halle Berry age or not.

  43. ClodHopper Says:

  44. ClodHopper Says:

I’m old enough to remember the “He’s done!!” chorus from the hollering talking heads in September every year for the last 4 years.

I used to joke with my Patriot fan friend that Bill and Toms motto was Wakr me up when September ends.

Judging Tom after one week is just dumb.

  45. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Mike

SHAME ON YOU! ARE YOU A BUCS FAN OR NOT. JW is the very reason for our desperation…check yo sheet Mike…28-42…7-9..pick six to start his career and a pick six in OT to end it.

    That’s the freaking desperation Mike!!!!

See if you can comprehend Mike…ONE GAME..are you such a wuss that you throw in the towel after ONE game. Oops…you’re not throwing in the towel because you are NOT a Bucs fan. You are a Jameis fan just hoping against hope that YOUR SAVIOR won’t look as bad. NOTHING can vindicate him Mike.
28-42…FOURTEEN games BELOW mediocrity…he’s a LOSER. IF Brady throws 50 more ints it won’t make Jameis look any better. Get over it!

You don’t get to have it both ways…when JW loses it’s the rest of the team and too much is made of the QB position…when Brady loses…ONE game…it’s all on him…not the ten points that ST’s gave up…not the crappy OL play…not the miscommunication between ME and TB12…Brady made ONE horrid throw..the weak arse toss to the sideline for the pick six. JW made a horrid throw every quarter.

If you’re going to come here with your weakarse JW crap expect to get it thrown right back at you.

BTW how did Jameis play on Sunday. Oh that’s right he can’t even make the second string of any NFL team. Why did Taysom Hill make a perfect throw while JW is simply watching? Why did the rest of the league take a pass.

He was worth 30 million if you ask JW…just check yo sheets he’s ballin’.
Last I checked he wasn’t even playing! His “Guaranteed” salary is UNDER one million bucks if he hits his bonuses he’ll get a little over two million…not the ludicrous 30 million HE and his agent claimed he was worth. Check yo sheet Mike.

  46. Rod Munch Says:

I said back in mid-March, before Winston went to the Saints, how it would be just like the Bucs to give up on their (just turned) 26-year old gunslinger coming off a 5000 yard season where he was 2nd in TDs and lead the leagues top passing offense and 3rd highest scoring offense, to get Brady, only to see Winston sign with the Saints, sit behind Brees for a year, then go on to put up 40 pts a game vs the Bucs for the next 15 years. That is what the Bucs, the most losing franchise in all of sports, would do…

With that said, I also said if you can sign Brady, you do it. It’s not about his play, it’s about changing the image of the team – and being the most watched thing on TV since the SB, well that’s what Brady brings.

Brady played fine in my opinion. His INT to Evans looked to be a miscommunication where Evans cut off the route – no idea who was in the wrong, but it didn’t look like a terrible play. The INT to Watson – no idea what happened there, except I do know Watson is garbage and caused at least INT in those last 2 games last year, and stumbled and tripped over his own two feet on a wide open TD and Watson shouldn’t even be on this team. I assume Watson ran the route too flat or somehow messed up, because that’s what he does, he’s the Ryan Smith of the offense.

Outside of those bad plays, Brady showed some great accuracy on some of the long passes. Don’t forget that Brady is well over 300 yards passing without the 71 yards in pass interference calls when throwing to Evans, and those were legit calls. If the special teams doesn’t play like dirt, the Bucs are in a 1 possession game in the 4th quarter against what might end up being the top defense in the NFL.

The big mistake the Bucs made, in my mind, was not trying to bring back Winston once it became apparent there was a soft market. They could have sold him that he sits for a year or two, learns from the GOAT, then he’s still just turning 28 when he takes back over if Brady makes it 2 years. OR — in my mind the real plan — if Brady looks old, Winston is right back in there. I hate losing Winston when it’s possible we could have had both – and even Winston said you can’t be mad losing your job to the GOAT.

BUT I think Brady will be fine. This week against the Panthers will tell me a lot, and I expect to see a good old fashion beat down. If we don’t get that, then people can start the panic. But anyone who thought the Bucs were the favorites in week 1 are just clueless and don’t understand how good the Saints are.

  47. Of course Says:

    @ANYONE

If Winston is so great WHY ISNT HE STARTING SOMEWHERE?

Why is he 3rd string riding the bench?

    I mean seriously?

He couldn’t even land a legit backup job ANYWHERE!!

And you yahoos come on here yapping about Winston lmao hahahahahahahHahaha

No one wanted him. NOONE HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

he’s a 3rd stringer and you all literally think he’s GREAT hahahahahaha

WHY ISNT HE SOMEWHERE STARTING? Hello?

He didn’t even get a legitimate BACKUP spot!

  48. RICHARD weeks Says:

    Stpetebucsfan

I agree with everything you said to Mike

  49. Pewter Power Says:

Max is an idiot and it’s not a bold take it’s a stupid take which he is full of on a daily basis. Your kind of dumb yourselves for roasting SAS hot takes but giving this idiot credit for nonsense that retired meshawn Johnson even called him crazy. You saying Max Kellerman who knows nothing about football has more knowledge or more interested in defending Winston as usual.

  50. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Rod Munch

Most of your points were correct but the adding and subtracting of the final score and stating a few plays when saints were playing prevent is childish thinking

90% of all NFL games is under 7 points. You can say that childish talk in every game

Saints were running the ball and playing field position at the 4th quarter

Saints and their defense was in full control in the 2nd half.

Brady is not going to last half the season if he is holding the ball and running around behind that porus offensive line

    That is a fact”

    Kobe Faker

  51. Ed Says:

Winston, did not throw one pass for Tampa, on Sunday, yet Buc’s fan try to fine a way to blame him. Brady is a old man. who can see the play, but can not react. H e is staring down receivers. i guess Smith threw the two interceptions and threw the ball to one receiver all game. this team will have separation in the locker room by the fourth game. Brady would have had three turn overs if the ball did not bounce back to him.

  52. Arians Is Over-Rated Says:

It’s sunburned Santa’s offense! Everyone throws pics in it.

  53. JimmyJack Says:

St Pete allow me to answer for Mike…..A few years ago when we were done by Halloween Mike proclaimed he was now going to root for the Jags(that was the year then made it to the AFC Championship)…….So while he may call himself a Bucs fan. He is not a diehard like the majority rest of us here.

  54. JimmyJack Says:

    Mike bleeds rainbows. Not pewter.

  55. BringBucsBack Says:

I made this same comment on another article after Sunday’s game. It bares repeating.

By comparison, in his first game under BA & BL, Jameis threw 3 picks (had two more dropped) & 2 pick-sixes against a defense that was not as good a year ago as the Saints are today and he had the luxury of a full off-season & pre-season. Also, the TEAM played well-enough to win the 9er game last year; that can’t be said for last Sunday’s game.

  56. stpetebucsfan Says:

    JJ

Thanks for that explanation. Now it all makes sense.

Ed…wow your Jameis bias is certainly showing, It wasn’t us blaming Jameis it was YOUR side who brought up Jameis not us. You were hoping for a neener neener moment…perhaps not you Ed but the posts that drew the reaction were doing just that.

They’re trying to say I told you so one game into the season. Sadly the bottom line is nothing Brady can do will erase our memories of erratic Jameis who was so damn dumb he loses the final game and a chance to at least be .500 and says he’s been ballin’ check yo sheets. He was worth thirty million

There is an old cliche. You don’t make your own furniture look any better by trashing your neighbors,

Only ONE thing can ever redeem Jameis. He needs to become a #1 QB for another team and succeed in getting that team to the playoffs. If he’s half as good as his fluffers here maintain he should eventually go deep into the playoffs.

  57. Iamabuc Says:

Why is anybody bothered with what he’s saying anyway? We can all tell that he didn’t even see the damn game….🙄

  58. BuccoDav Says:

how many quarterbacks can say they began and ended their careers with a pick 6?

  59. BigMacAttack Says:

1 game against the Saints, class of the NFC and guys are throwing in the towel. Based on Bucs history, I can’t blame you, but seriously guys I think you’re calling it way too soon. Now can we get these balls deflated please. 😂

  60. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Munch

The Biggest problem I see with your scenario of having JW on the team with Brady— How much $$ can you tie up in QB’s?

That and it was clear ( to every GM in the league) that the value for JW just wasn’t there.

You don’t really think he would have signed for league minimum ( which is one of two reasons the Saints signed him), to stay on a team that drafted him number 1 only to ride the pine do you.

Check yo sheet, JW thought he was worth 30 million per. No one else thought so… not even close.

  61. adam from ny Says:

    go easy on max kellerman…

yeah he doesn’t know much about anything but boxing…

but he is pretty good with his boxing jargon…

a couple fast facts about kellerman…

he was a white rapper in the mid 90’s…

go figure…a rapper !…a hip hop rapper…you can google it…

and his brother sam was murdered about 15 years ago…

so go easy on the dude…

he takes a lot of ish from steven a smith…lol

  62. Of course Says:

WHY ISNT HE SOMEWHERE STARTING? Hello?

He didn’t even get a legitimate BACKUP spot!

I knew none of you WINSTON apologists would dare to answer this. Instead you all just glossed over it and yapped about nothing. Bunch of losers.

  63. JimmyJack Says:

Joe give the dog a bone. These people cannot handle a couple of days without a Winston article.

  64. Athlete Says:

Hey BuccoDav,, how many QB’s have ended a season and started the season with a pick 6??? Oh, is that 3 games in a row with pick 6’s Tommy???? Hmmm

  65. Rod Munch Says:

How great is it Michael Thomas, that piece of garbage, got hurt in garbage time. I love it. After the cheapshot on Godwin, Suh should have clipped Brees, but at least something happened.

  66. Rod Munch Says:

Jmarkbuc – Winston only got a million as a backup in NO, that’s my point, once it was obvious the market wasn’t going to pay him starter money, the Bucs could have stepped in and tried to make a deal with him. Instead we have Gabbert as the backup, if he plays at all this year the season is done, he’s awful. As for Winston he had bigger contracts on that table that he turned down – he was thinking more about his future, and that’s where the Bucs could have made something happen. But they didn’t.

Now, with that said, if Winston wasn’t interested in doing a deal like he did in NO, then I understand that – pride can be difficult to overcome, but he did say you can’t be mad at losing your job to the GOAT, so that tells me he would have at least considered my scenario.

  67. Rod Munch Says:

Kobe – As I said, the Saints might end up being the best defense in football – and special teams took a bad offensive performance and turned the game into a no win situation. Sort of like how special teams lost at least 2 games for the Bucs last year. I’m more concerned about that than I’m concerned about Brady at the moment.

  68. Greg Says:

@Adam intersting info on Hellerman I had not heard before however his gig is entertainment and that is what he is providing. I doubt he watched any of the game. As others have said it is one game against a team we should have lost to. The Saints are good and well oiled. We see the areas that need to be addressed and I am confident they will respond. In regard to TB’s age give me a break and him credit he physically is in his 30’s easy Time will tell of course and we will be laughing about how the over reaction was to this first game.

  69. hammerhead Says:

one game and this stuff begins… no offseason or preseason, new offense, new teammates… probably a little early to make judgements. But these guys have to have a “take” or they cease to exist. I’ll wait a while to worry about Brady.

  70. Wesley Says:

Max Kellerman is a freaking buffoon anyhow. No one should give two cents what he thinks including you Joe.

  71. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

The reason JW is not starting is he strapped it up for the last two games with no weapons and 2 injuries , if he sits out like his agent wanted him to-he gets paid.
You cannot fire the owners , but yet they are the problem. Gruden won because dumb and dumber-Errrrrr I mean joel and bryan got the hell out of his and Bruce Allens’ way.
Extending Dsmith all those years was the one of the most foolish personnel moves ever–Errrrrrrr other than wasting top picks on a FREAKING KICKER.
Winfield is a star in the making , so I guarantee you Licht Brain had no input with that pick.

  72. Buczilla Says:

Kellerman knows his boxing, but he’s got a grating personality. I’d rather watch my wife’s nails dry than that screaming show that he is on.

  73. ElBajito43 Says:

    Go Bucs just testing 123

  74. Kord Says:

It was one game, Bucs still gonna roll!

  75. Richard Dickson Says:

First real game action for a lot of new pieces vs. a team that’s been pretty much in this form for years now. It’s one game. No time to panic just yet.

  76. Brandon Says:

To be fair, Kellerman was brought into BSPN to be a boxing commentator. He seemed to know boxing fairly well, he clearly knows very little about football.

  77. HC Says:

The best indicator play was when the Saints tricked the Bucs in to jumping offside on 4th down short. The groans around town could be heard for miles.

  78. lambchop Says:

    @Joe,

When you compare Brady to Burrow, Murray, etc., you do realize that Brady is a veteran who has played in one system for 20 years. Sometimes, old habits die hard. Brady was lights out on that first drive. And was average after that. What does that tell you?

They need to incorporate more Patriots plays. Don’t let your ego get in the way of utilizing Brady’s strengths and experience. You’re getting 0, zilch, nada, experience in an offense Brady is not suited for. The more they delay incorporating a heavy Patriots influenced offense, this offense is going to look erratic.

BA and BL really have yet to call a complete game as far as I’m concerned where I would be confident in their play calls. I mean, we had Koetter who runs the ball 4 straight times, and BL who telegraphs runs to the D.

If you bring in the Goat, you gotta bring the spices too to make a good Goat Curry.
