Learning The Ropes

September 10th, 2020

Bucs QB Tom Brady.

For two decades, park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady had a routine with his old teammates.

The keyword there is “old.”

Brady’s on a new team. Everything is new and fresh. And old man Brady came clean that all this newness after two decades is sort of mentally refreshing.

Those who don’t believe the Bucs will reach the playoffs this winter believe that newness is the key reason why the Bucs won’t be playing meaningful games in January: Brady has too much to learn early on (as do his Bucs teammates) to avoid potholes that will be too large to climb out of later.

When speaking to the pen and mic club today, Brady didn’t exactly throw cold water on those concerns. He did admit if the Bucs’ offense is chasing perfection, they are a long way away from that.

“The difference is there are a lot of things that are new for a first game,” Brady said. “The processes that we go through and how we prepare for first down, second down, third down, in the red zone, all the different situations that come up. We are talking about those things for the first time and it is not a preseason game. …

“I think we realize there is going to be a learning curve associated with how to get up to speed and how to be at our best. I think we are putting in the time every day to make those corrections and try not to make corrections day after day but to learn from our mistakes so that we can be better the next time we take the field.”

And that “next time” after tomorrow will be a real live NFL game.

“That kind of hit me today,” Brady said. “The reality hit me today that we are actually getting ready to play a game. … something I haven’t done in nine months.

“We are going to have to learn quickly and get up to speed quickly. I think the first quarter of the game is going to be new for everybody just getting our feet wet and understanding the speed of the game. It will be a little faster than what it was in practice.”

So what is it the Bucs need to work on offensively to try to meet Brady’s standards? Well, Brady mentioned the ever-popular communication.

“I think we are constantly working at it,” Brady said. “I don’t think we will be done with that anytime soon. We are going to learn a lot over the course of the season. …

“We are going to figure out what we are good at and not good at. I wish we knew those things now.

“The reality is we don’t know what we are very good at. We don’t know what we are not good at. But we will try some things and see what it looks under real competition.”

So why is so much attention being paid to Brady learning a new offense and learning his new teammates and vice-versa? Because unfamaliarity makes it harder to be efficient and score points early in the season, Brady noted.

“It is a big challenge,” Brady said. “There is no margin for error when you play great football teams.”

And make no mistake, Brady added. New Orleans is a “great” team. And has been for quite some time.

And Brady would know all about that. He’s been on an elite team for a long time.

    and you call him WHAT?

Boy is that FUNNY. And the PETER KING waste of any sane persons time moniker is HILARIOUS!!

  2. All lives matter Says:

If anyone can step right in and do his part relatively smooth it’s Terrific Tom. Now we just need to hope our receivers are crisp and decisive in their route tree.

  3. bojim Says:

Paul can’t you deal with it? That’s all you talk about. It’s getting old. Real old.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I am thoroughly convinced that it is on our defense to win……all of the focus is on the offence because of Brady & all the new pieces…..jelling etc….but it’s the defense that will surprise.

  5. Mike Says:

Like N pup about JW Paul….. ease off of it bro.

Ahh! I love the sound of triggered Paul’s in the afternoon..Said no one ever. On that note.. Park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady will have a great season. Hopefully more accolades will follow!

Not nice. Joe doesn’t have enough interest to do what you’re asking. What’s done is done. If it doesn’t change, Joe’s interest will change. Also, Joe discussed this at length on the Ira Kaufman Podcast. –Joe

  8. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I think Brady’s responses are fair and realistic.

I know one thing, the Bucs have quite a challenge out in front but Tom Brady is an upgrade over Jameis Winston all day and every day. Last year watching Bucs ball was painful, certainly not worth paying for NFL Sunday ticket. Some of it was awesome like seeing Shaq and some of our defense excel. Have to believe that this year will be more enjoyable all the way around.

  10. Craig Says:

It is newer for some other teams. When the turf gets mucked up and bodies flag, Brady will step up and do what needs done. Other teams won’t have that.

This year will be different for us too. Now we have a QB who knows the pro game, the last few years we didn’t have that. I doubt we will see the deer in the headlights look like we saw for a few years.

The look that made our hands go past the glass and straight to the bottle.

  11. ben Says:

Winston is America’s qb …Joe def has a favorite who plays for the other team

  12. AlteredEgo Say: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Brady will call and old Patriots play in the Red Zone and only he a Gronk will know what’s up … touchdown Tampa Bay as 10 other guys looking puzzled

  14. El Buco Realisto Says:

Paul does not “realize” that what he posted is what the old cheating goat brady did in another team and town!!!!!!!!!!

Joe is just posting what the old cheating goat brady has done in Tampa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Realist just said something sensible for a change.

  16. Colonel Angus Says:

Game 1 is going to be preseason for the league. Only that it counts in the standings. NFL should have foreseen no preseason and scheduled non conference games to open up with, they at least could have scheduled non division games.

  17. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Buco, what would you like the GOAT to have done so far this season in Tampa? Don’t you have some sheep to herd back in the pen?

I agree with you. Defense wins championships! Defense will have to bail us out early.

  19. alaskabuc Says:

Not on topic, but I’m watching Vernon get roasted right now and I can’t help but wonder how much it helped our secondary dumping that clown.

Look at that Clyde show out for KC! Man it hurt so bad when I heard them call his name with that 32nd pick.

Ya’ll seeing now why I wanted him so bad…mmm, boys gonna be good!

    Paul, I agree with you.

Sounds much better and much more respectful for a player who has earned it more than any other active player.

Bet you won’t approve my last comment Joe and you know it’s true. You should lay off Tom Brady with your home invading garbage. Really? Make him feel welcome and show some class.

I was with you on him. Wanted him over Johnathon Taylor easy.

  27. Ndog Says:

Brady’s not welcome, why doesn’t he just go the F back where he came from. People who have rooted against him for 20 years don’t want him here. REAL FANS don’t flip after 20 years like a little bit’h.

  28. BigMacAttack Says:

You guys kill me. Tom Brady has what we can only dream of, and humility as well. Look at his wife or bank statement. He hasn’t played a down yet and all these pot shots taken at him. Belichick was the cheater. Great coach still. If TB cheated it was at BB’s direction undoubtedly. Who here wouldn’t trade places with Tom in a heartbeat? Idiots 😂

  29. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Man I love the den of outright boomer delusions and trolling that are these comment sections.

  32. JimbobBucsFan Says:

We can’t win them all during the off season.

I do believe Clyde Edwards-Helaire was targeted highly on our draft board. Perhaps, he was not not valued enough that we were willing to use draft capital to jump back into the first round to get him. If he was available we may have moved up in the second round for him.

I do feel that Wirfs was first and then Wills would have been our second choice.
I think a chance at Thomas was considered a ridiculous long shot. I also think Becton was out because we were/are all in for this year mainly.

I am intrigued by Antoine Winfield Jr and will be watching him closely this weekend. I overlooked him in my draft considerations.

We had a phenomenal off season anyway!

  33. ©MadMax Says:

Agreed Jimbo. I think most had Clyde going in the top 5-10 of the 2nd round and Im sure he wouldve been targeted by us if he had lasted that long. But hey, we got Vaughn who isnt bad at all, and now Fournette….I mean no complaints here lol. We had to spend on O line and safety, and Winfield is going to show out. cant wait to see him intercept Brees Sunday.
