“That’s Always A Barometer For Me”

August 17th, 2020

Bruce Arians after practice this morning.

A quiet truth of training camp is that coaches really don’t fully evaluate anything until after they’ve scrutinized the practice film of a day’s session.

That means they don’t have detailed answers to reporters questions as soon as a practice ends.

The truth comes later.

So today Joe asked Bucco Bruce Arians after morning practice for his impressions of Friday’s first-of-the-year session of offense versus defense.

“Speed of practice,” Arians replied. “For the first day really going against each other, I think we had 11 minutes left on the clock. And that’s always a barometer for me. I don’t add plays. We script enough plays to get our work done. And in the speed in which we practice, I like seeing extra time on the [practice] clock. But the overall execution defensively and offensively I thought was extremely high [Friday and today]. The biggest thing right now is getting used to hard counts on offense.

“We had way too many penalties offensively, pre-snap penalties — offense and defense — using hard counts. And Tom’s got a good hard count. Blaine’s got a good hard count. We just got to get better at our snap counts and pre-snap penalties.”

Interesting to hear that Tom Brady’s hard count is drawing penalties on both sides of the ball. That’s a hard count!

Totally understandable for there to be too many penalties during the first day in pads; no need to overreact.

Joe’s glad to hear the Bucs were setting a fast pace and still executing. That bodes well.

Sounds like Tom Brady was shredding the D. Great question Joe!

Reminded me of all them times over the years I saw Brady rushing all the snaps going as fast as possible so he could keep exploiting the defense…….Straight into the endzone and the defense never knew how to adjust. That’s some great QB right there.

So Joe! Does that mean Winston had a weak hard count which created confusion and all those o-line penalties too?!?!?!

Please check the sheet and get back with me. Thanks!

OK I admit it. When I’m eating W’s my hard count can get weak at times.

Well then; hard counts were like audibles. Mostly non-existant.
