Research Before Practice

“Shady, thank God you arrived! I wanted you here so bad I promised Jason Licht I’d pick up his bar tab for the next month if he signed you.” (Photo courtesy of WFLA.com.)

Here is something Joe learned today about Shady McCoy that speaks to why he is such a professional and why coaches like him.

It seemed from his words during a Zoom conference with the Tampa Bay pen and mic club that he knew he was coming to Tampa for some time.

Why does Joe say that? Because Shady said so, and he admitted he was researching park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady.

You see, when asked about catching passes from Brady, Shady said he had spoken with former Belicheats running back Dion Lewis to find out what Brady looks for in a receiving back. And Shady plans to talk with other former teammates of Brady to learn both the quarterback and the man.

“I think with Tom Brady in this case, that’s one of the first things I asked him is, ‘Hey, make sure you let me know what you want out of the running backs from receiving, because I know you did a lot of that,’” Shady said. “I reached out to [former Patriots RB] Dion Lewis – we’re good friends – and just asked him about what Tom likes in receiving backs. [I am] probably going to reach out to [Patriots RB] James White next.

“That’s something that I don’t really think is too hard. I’ve had to beat linebackers and linemen in the hole and stuff like that, so just to run a route and beat a guy – I feel more comfortable with that. You’re getting the ball in space and when you’re doing that, you also become a threat. …

“So, I look forward to that. I really do. Then, the best thing about that is you get tackled by a little safety or a corner here and there, not by a big linebacker [or] like [Ndamukong] Suh, those type of guys.”

Shady is sharp like a veteran. Getting tackled more often by a defensive back will stretch your career out versus getting the snot knocked out of you play after play by someone like Suh.

Joe thinks Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht picking up Shady may be one of the more underrated moves this offseason.

Are there any further questions about Shady?!
Every RB on the roster should be learning from this guy on how to be a pro. It’s too bad he’s a little past his prime though.

  2. Clean House Says:

I think Licht has started to do a solid job bringing in Quality vets to mix with the youth.
I may consider changing my name Clean House.

  3. Clean House Says:

We need a vet DB in the mix and a solid Vet OL

  4. Clean House Says:

Starting to look like a team that can win

  5. SB Says:

    DaFuq?!?!!?
JL must spend a lot of time at the bar?

  6. Clean House Says:

That right side is lacking- Cappa and a rookie

  7. Clean House Says:

Don’t care how good he might be- hes a rook

  8. Joe in Michigan Says:

Cappa proved to be decent last year. Wirfs will have TE help quite a bit, and is already a better run blocker than what the Bucs had in years past.

  9. SB Says:

    @ Clean House………
Prolly we would be better if JW was back under center huh?

  10. james west Says:

    very interesting

  11. gp Says:

It’s about time we had vets wanting to come here and play rather than retire. Hopefully we can build on that attitude through the future.

  12. Buczilla Says:

    Licht is on a tear.

  13. Ndog Says:

Don’t get sucked in Clean House, don’t do it sir.

  14. bucsfan951 Says:

NPUPPY wants the bucs to fail so he can say “i told you so”… chump!

  15. Clean House Says:

Well, at very least, JW should be backing up, TB12- would have no problem with that at all. Could you have a better backup? And he makes less than Griffen whichnis absurd. Woulldn’t you like to have the NFL leading passer, #1 in total offense, #2 in TDs, with full familiarity of the offense? Shortsided.
I imagine they didn’t think he could be had ar such a low price.
He had a willingness to learn behind Brees, should be doing it behind TB12.
Saints are smart- I’m not completely sucked in but I am excited to see what transpires.

  16. Clean House Says:

SB I don’t claim JW is superior to TB- but I do know that he’s 26 with huge upside. And we haven’t seen anything yet- so far looks like TB12 has fantastic command of 3 yard out passes and knows how to really lead a practice.
I’m really hoping he turns out to be more than a coach on the field to quote Shady McCoy

    I am hopeful.

  17. Clean House Says:

And JW is the NFL passing leader, leader in pypg, leader in total offense, and #2 in TDs-

    Check yo sheet

  18. Clean House Says:

Gonna argue with that stat line?

  19. Roy T. Buford Says:

Joe’s been busy today…all good stuff too! No great stuff! I couldn’t keep up.

Good Lord Clean House…five years ago you could logically say Winston had an upside. Right now he’s nothing but a careless gunslinger who pitched 5000 garbage yards to go with his career garbage record and embarassing on and off field issues; he’s a dude who holds a much higher opinion of himself than all 32 teams. There is no denying that.

I checked his sheet. It is nothing but toilet paper.

  20. BucEmUp Says:

Shady looked washed up last season and that was during a season where Damien Williams didn’t exactly have a firm grasp on the starting job. I’m not quite sure what the excitement is about. I’m still looking forward to Rojo or one of the rookies showing what they can bring.

  21. Roy T. Buford Says:

    ^^^ That is, No….not good stuff…great stuff!

  22. SB Says:

    Dammmm Roy T.
    Way to dish it out.

  23. SB Says:

    @Clean House.

I don’t know you mostly because you are a new name here.
Anyone that has been here for at least 6 years knows that I may have been the Only Gators fan that fully supported the Winston drafting. (Full disclosure being that I was in the ‘trade down’ crowd as I didn’t like Mariota )
That said tho when JW put on pewter and red I was full on into it!!!! I tried for 5 years to make every excuse I could for him and I live in Montana.
You can’t imagine the grief I have suffered at JWs hands. 5 years later time is up and I am moving on. Some people should do the same

  24. Roy T. Buford Says:

@SB…LOL! Hey, if the shoe fits…

  25. Jerry Jones Says:

I’m all in on the signing!!!

I hate how he carries the ball.

  26. JimmyJack Says:

That’s a intresting quote. He doesn’t even talk about running the ball. Only catching passes. Sure sounds like he already knows coming in that his job will be the back we use on passing downs(sorry Dare).

Was pretty obvious that was gonna be the case. Still cool to hear him kinda confirm it.

  27. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    Shady ran a 4.45 40
I remember the former Pitt Panther very well.
Light did well to pick him up.
Brady throwing to Evans, Godwin, and Gronk is gonna create serious space for Shady, and I can see him having a Huge year for us.
Plus, not only is he a good blocker, he is also good at picking up the blitz.

  28. Ndog Says:

951 I’m not rooting for them to fail BUT if they do it does mean that the lying, backstabbing, useless, overrated “coach” Arians will be gone and that cannot happen soon enough.

Eric Bieniemy would be a fantastic hire for this team as he actually runs a modern offense and I am pretty sure there will be a QB available that would fit that system perfect.

  29. SB Says:

    Ndog
Nothing you say about our organization excuses the fact that your boyfriend is a backup, making less than Ryan Griffen.
Not sure how you square your mouth to say some of the things you do but I applaud you. More entertaining than T m a x for sure.

  30. Youngbucs Says:

Ndog why is our coach a liar and a backstabbing overrated coach???????
Because some guy said it on twitter 😂 get a life.

  31. Ndog Says:

    Um cause I have eyes…
