Bucs Sign Veteran Center

August 24th, 2020

UPDATED 5:15 p.m. – Another intriguing, all-in move by the Buccaneers.

ESPN is reporting today that the shotcallers at One Buc Palace have dipped into the Bucco Bruce Arians handbag of ex-players and pulled out center A.Q. Shipley.

He started all 16 games for Arizona last season at center after missing the 2018 season with a blown knee. Shipley is 34 years old and played for Bucco Bruce Arians from 2015 through 2017 with the Cardinals, and in 2012 with the Colts. He has played a little guard in his career.

Shipley also was a teammate of Ryan Jensen in Baltimore back in 2013.

So why was Shipley sitting on the street after starting at center for a solid offense last season?

Regardless, this is great depth for the Bucs, much like last week’s signing of old man defensive tackle Kyle Love.

Joe’s been reading old comments from Cardinals fans and the consensus is Shipley played reasonably well last year, though he’ll never be confused with a Pro Bowler. Apparently, the Cardinals wanted to go younger, understandable with a Pro Bowl quarterback in just his second season.

Well the poor cap space teams keep getting poorer!
JK A.Q. Shipley! Welcome! You have a great last name for the team!

  2. Chris Adams Says:

Maybe he does’t sweat like our boy.

  3. Joe in Michigan Says:

Nice. I wondered who’d be the backup center, Shackelford or Fabiano. Neither, apparently.

  4. james west Says:

has jensen played another position on the line other than center, this intrigues me, they bring in shipley a serviceable center, is there going to be a shift from kappa, maybe with jensen

I am worried zhitless over the backup QB of the future situation

  6. SOEbuc Says:

This is what Super Bowl teams look like. Great vet depth and rotation to go with up and coming young players or players in their prime. And BA and Jensen with a former center they’ve played with is a good call. Nice play.

  7. JimmyJack Says:

I like these BA guys we’ve seen on the field. Minter has been a very solid player. Logan did a good job handling kickoffs. Watford was a nice depth on OL. I’m sure I missed a few players

  8. JimmyJack Says:

James West. Nice thought but I just dont think you mess with the C/QB exchange. It’s the most important chemistry in football. You get a good C you keep him there.

  9. Pryda...sec147 Says:

I’ll take it need the depth

  10. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

No point reading into this signing. It rare to go the entire season with all five of your starting lineman. Makes sense to pick up Shipley for league minimum if your current backup players aren’t up to par. BA already said Jensen was best lineman last season and Cappa was doing pretty good by season’s end, therefore I doubt there will be any re-assignments among the current starters.

  11. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

According to ESPN, A.Q. Shipley was the fifth highest ranked centers in the league with a pass block win rate of 96%.

  12. Clw JB Says:

Great depth signing and another clear indication we are ALL IN TO WIN NOW!!

  13. Buczilla Says:

Cool with me. Win now or bust.

  14. Roy T. Buford Says:

He’s probably a lot dryer than Jensen?

  15. CPN Says:

Another one of Arians’ guys from AZ.

    Cool.

  16. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

    Cappa competition?

  17. bud tocks Says:

Yes, did Brady complain that Jensen had too much Butt sweat ? Perhaps the folded towel and talcum powder just didn’t control the moisture in Jensens taint ?

  18. Rod Munch Says:

The team needs depth on the o-line – hopefully the guy can provide that depth if needed. But without knowing anything about the guy, who is to say what? I mean the PFF fake news nerds swore that Evan Smith was a quality backup a couple of years ago, and all I saw was him get ran over every time he came into the game.

  19. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Come on now…..

That’s BA all suited up ain’t it?
    😁

  20. mark2001 Says:

Doosh…you think BA has arms that big?

  21. james west Says:

yeah i agree with ya jimmy jack, what about this dude shipley, center his only position?

  22. Hawk Says:

Shipley has also played some at guard.

  23. teacherman777 Says:

I have been calling for a OG/C in the 2nd round for 4 years!

    Instead, we picked MJ Stewart.

I warned everybody. I said Jensen had back issues, is old, and super expensive.

    Cappa sucks.

We needed an OG/C in the 2nd round four years in a row!

  24. SmoothBayRider Says:

The guy is a rotational guard and a backup center . Have a nice day .

  25. David Says:

Back up center and back up guard. A depth signing

  26. Joe in Michigan Says:

Jensen is 29 years old and the 8th rated Center by Lindy’s Sports (10th by Athlon Sports). That’s the first I’ve heard of Jensen having back issues. Are you thinking of JR Sweezy?

  27. Cobraboy Says:

Obviously, coaches are not impressed with the back-ups.

    Solid signing.

If I did a google image serch for “grozzled NFL OL veteran”, I would expect to get an inmage like the one in the post.

  28. DanBucsFan Says:

Licht is sure doing a good job IMHO of building a serious contender. Our offensive line is dare I say stacked with depth now, Shipley and Haeg are both proven starters coming off the bench. Our rb room has nice depth as well with addition of Shady. Nice job !! GO BUCS

  29. Allbuccedup Says:

While we are getting ex Cardinal players cut Griffin sign Carson Palmer hes 3 years younger than Brady.
