Banking On Winfield

August 30th, 2020

Versatile.

The Bucs thought they got an absolute steal with Minnesota safety Antoine Winfield. And Joe would not be surprised if he is starting.

Joe hasn’t seen Winfield make a splash play (like a pick or a scoop-and-score against the first-team offense). That will likely come. But from all accounts, Winfield is a smart ballplayer who learns quickly and is steady and reliable. For a rookie with virtually no offseason, that’s a good sign.

Albert Breer of SI.com spent a couple of days with the Bucs and from what he gathers, a starting safety job is Winfield’s to lose.

@AlbertBreer: Antoine Winfield has been a star in camp, making a head-turning play every day at practice. With flexibility to play FS, SS and nickel, Bruce Arians sees him stylistically as he saw Tyrann Mathieu and Budda Baker in AZ—a movable chess piece.

Safety being a need, good news.

That is good news. And what is starting to surface is the Bucs have two defensive backs that can play multiple positions well, Sean Murphy-Bunting and Winfield.

So this should allow Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles to get creative and develop exotic defenses to confuse offenses. How much of this Winfield can grasp and execute with such a limited offseason/preseason is unknown. But the possibilities are delicious.

Winfield is a stud and he is about as well prepared as any rookie can be, offseason or not. Excited to see this defense get after it!

I was screaming with joy when we drafted this kid. He is going to be a pro-bowler if he keeps his head on straight. And I see no reason that shouldn’t happen. Huge steal in the second. He had no business falling that far.

Joe like Wirfs, who’s better? Don’t care if it was college, Wirfs has started more games at RT the last three years then Haeg, or any other Buc on the team. Winfield was drafted because we haven’t had a consistent safety in forever. They are already better then anyone on our roster at those positions. Do you think because Haeg has played in the NFL he’ll do better opening day against Jordan then Wirfs? Think Edwards, Whitehead, Adams are better then Winfield because they’ve played NFL games? If they, or Haeg were the answer, we wouldn’t have used used our 1st, and 2nd pick on a RT, and safety.

Winfield was a great pick. With all our defensive talent this kid will shine. I expect at least one rookie of the week. Kudos to the GM and his crew.

Thats good news. I was worried because few players his size make a big impact in the NFL.

Of course they are “banking on Winfield”!!!!!!!!!!!! They could not coach up and develop the players on the roster so they have to draft players that can p!at right away!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its player ” replacement” with no player “development”!!!!!!!!!! Once again proving that the ” roster” that the GM built was the”real” problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And if the toilet bowls defense runs the same three plays can you really call that “exotic”???????? They better hope that they play a bunch of backup qb’s like they did at the end of last year so they can look average!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Realisto, (yawn). I’m gonna start reading your comments right before I go to bed. It should help me get to sleep. Maybe I’ll count your sheep after that.

Thanks for the nap again Realist. Your drivel puts me right to sleep.

Actually, I skip over your comments every time – so I actually do not even know what you said, but am 100% sure it was the same old drivel. You seriously should just stop.

    Go Bucs!

You know many 2nd rounders miss. It seems like Jason Licht has turned the corner and is drafting and signing better.

    Good for the Buc’s.

I actually try to read it sometimes but just can’t get through it. I just wonder what kind of sadist eagerly follows and comments on something that makes him so angry. If I hated anything as much as this guy hates all things Bucs, I surely wouldn’t go near it. For the record, I’ve never once went on an ice dancing blog, a golf or bowling blog, anything that i hate. Hell, I hate veganism, but I don’t follow vegans on social media and eat up every word like a do a juicy steak and then spit out hate. There is seriously something wrong with these people. I wonder if the guy in the cubicle next to him, or his mommy upstairs, knows that people like these are probably sociopaths.
