No Helmets For 13 Days?

July 21st, 2020

Joe wonders whether Tom Brady will still be holding private workouts with teammates once training camp begins.

The terms of NFL camps re-opening are being negotiated between owners and players and for the first-ever time in August, underwear football is going to get extremely popular. Assuming veteran players show up for work on time just one week from today, they won’t be doing much on the field for two weeks, per NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport took to Twitter today to explain:

“What would training camp be like under the NFL’s latest ramp-up proposal? — Testing & physicals for 5-6 days — Strength & conditioning plus walk-throughs thru Day 12. — Off Day 13 — Ramp up with helmets through Day 18 — Off Day 19 — On the 20th day, the pads go on. So, different.”

The no-helmets until Day 14 intrigues Joe because Tom Brady practices with a helmet now in his private workouts with various Bucs. Does this mean the helmet we be optional, or will there be a no-helmet order?

Will Brady strongly suggest his new teammates not take two weeks off from football activities during the no-football work of the first 13 days (as outlined above) and join him off-site?

Peer pressure, on many levels, will be an interesting element to this wacky offseason.

What’s the deal with no helmets? I would have guessed that putting a clear face shield on helmets may actually help stop the spread of Covid-19? Sounds backwards to me?

  2. ocala Says:

You wouldn’t think something that provides safety(helmet) would not be allowed to be worn.

  3. Roy T. Buford Says:

Yeah, can’t figure out why no helmets. I know they get hot, and guys are always messing with them. So maybe it’s just about keeping hands away from the face.

The players may be well advised to rethink the positions of their union representatives in these negotiations.
Reduced prep time for the season will lead to sloppy play early on, Sloppy play leads to more injuries. Lack of protection in practice(helmets) is yet another indication of negligence on the part of the negotiators.
Yes, I assume that the ‘no helmet’ practices will also be ‘no contact’ practices. There are other reasons to ‘get used’ to wearing the helmets.

All these restrictions are only hurting the play of all nfl teams. My opinion majority of players could care less about covid they are just using covid as a bargaining chip.

The players aren’t the only ones…

This just shows you how everything about this is political. It’s an airborne virus (allegedly) so helmets and face masks should help. Ridiculous

  8. Bush's Coke Spoon Says:

Helmets suck because they’re heavy and cause fatigue. Which is why you wear them early and often, to GET USED to it and strengthen your neck.

Welcome to the new pencil neck NFL.

No is a time when every person with any authority takes the opportunity to set some rule that makes them feel important….

I’m waiting rationale behind no helmets.

If players are isolated too much from regular playing conditions like no preseason games….no practices with other teams and limited practices….they will be in jeopardy of more injuries early in the season.

Somewhat off topic, but Mike Garafolo is reporting that the NFLPA has told players there will be no preseason games in 2020.

Tuesday morning the NFL offered up no preseason games in a proposal. It’s all but impossible to believe the NFLPA would not take that offer.

I can tell a lot of you dont wear mask as instructed by the medical profession. What in the he11 does a helmet cover? It does not cover your mouth and nose. You know, the instruments that spread the virus. A helmet is a face guard but your nose and mouth is still exposed. Come on man, you guys cant be that slow. Political? Well now your president as of today is finally saying wear a mask. Finally. It only took him 5 months to do so. Is that political too? You people are funny.

  14. webster Says:

All these countries that have flatten their virus outbreaks have been wearing mask for months. Was that political or were they taking the advice of the medical professionals? Countries like canada and countries all over Europe wont even let americans in their country because of our outbreak numbers. The bahamas said we are not allowed there. Is that also political against your dear leader? You guys are too funny its sad.

I heard TEAM GLAZER was super pissed that Brady was practicing at one point in his New England because the inept, lazy, snitching equipment manager didn’t do his job and jet him a Bucs one. Brady’s didn’t even have the the flag on it once he did get one.

  16. Craig Says:

I heard so many rumors of a COVID resistant helmet, that I thought the NFL might be able to pull this off.

If that was true, then the helmets need to be out sooner than that. Regular helmets take some getting used to. If they changed it, they will take a lot of getting used.

Goodell needs to drag up a soapbox and explain how this season will work, for everyone, not just the owners.

It will not be a season this year or they will not finish the season . And we have a 43 year old quarterback and next year he will be 44 . This quick fix is not going to work .
