NFL Strikes Deal With Players On Training Camp

July 8th, 2020

You can exhale if you’ve been worried about training camp starting this month.

Per Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, the NFL and the players union have signed off on protocols for players in camp, something that was being hotly debated over the past weeks.

More details are sure to come out, but Florio shared these nuggets, among others.

The agreement allows teams to have up to two fan events at the stadium during training-camp practice, as long as state and local requirements are followed as to the number of fans, no fans are permitted on the field, and no fans will have contact or interaction with players.

Strict physical distancing requirements appear throughout the document, with locker-room reconfiguration required to allow at least six feet between players. Players must be at least six feet apart in the facility at all times, whether in the weight room, shower room, training room, etc. Saunas and steam rooms will not be used during training camp.

The players had wanted all meetings to be conducted virtually; the document requires them “to the extent possible.” If in-person meetings are necessary, teams must try to hold them outdoors. Physical distancing and masks are required for all meetings that occur in the facility, whether inside or outside.

What a change this will represent for the Bucs and all teams. Just the locker room changes alone is a lot to figure out for a full summer roster of 90, in addition to changes to weigh room scheduling, meetings and more.

Joe wrote about the potential return of FanFest four days ago.

No word yet on whether the NFL will let players opt-out for the entire season.

They can use the Visitors locker room to facilitate their requirements

Pure stupidity! When the season starts they are all gonna be piled up play after play with dudes slobbering, sweating and bleeding all over each other.

No such thing at One Buc Palace. Guessing the Bucs will have an outdoors locker room (tents with portable showers). No clue if there are shower facilities at the Glazer Shed.

visitors locker room at the stadium is friggin’ tiny. Maybe you could fit a dozen players in there with social distancing. Maybe.

Joe is starting to think if the Bucs hold practice at the stadium, it would be stacked practices. Social distancing with 75+ guys at the stadium would be pretty tricky.

    Gonna be a KRAZZZZYYY season

  9. bucsfaninoregon Says:

Is this supposed to be evidence we are going to have a season? All these protocols about the locker room, etc. and nothing about face to face practices and games. This is football not badminton.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Not a problem…..they will do most anything to get the season in…..$5billion plus on the line…..quarantine, expand rosters & play ball!!! Just like any other business….the sacrifice is fans in the stands…..

  11. Buddhaboy19 Says:

SO GHAYE, especially for something that has a .017% death rate in florida.
    New #s came out yesterday.

These players are a thousand times more likely to die driving into One Buc.

We are truly scared of a summer cold.

  12. Black lives matter Says:

They can separate some players practice at stadium and some at the facility

  13. Alanbucsfan Says:

Split up the practices to 3/day 30 players per practice and split up the coaching staff accordingly.

That sounds good…we should also replace the gatorade bottles with drinkable bleach.

Why distamce befroe the season just to play the game? Herd immunity would benefit everyone much faster than waitinf on a vaccine

    Bring on the season!

This is fantastic news! Thanks Joe.

I’ve talked to Brian Ford at the Bucs about how all this going, and it is amazing, the time and expense going in to making sure if a season is possible, it will happen. I’m past wanting one way or the other to be able to go to games this year. I just want a season. This news puts me into a pretty good mood.

people dont seem to get it,its not the young healthy people that are going to die.but they will bring it to their aged and sick relatives, some old, some young but not able to fight off the virus.im sure you have someone you care about that could die from this.is anything that important to chance losing them forever? selfish brats if you ask me

More directly, some young people who catch this are still struggling months later with respiratory issues. These guys make money with their bodies. Kind of hard for these guys to get back on the field from this if they can’t breathe right.

  23. Buddhaboy19 Says:

The cases have skyrocketed in the last few weeks because they are usable what are probable cases as cases.

If someone tests positive, they use contact tracing to determine the number of people they have been around. In some cases, one positive test has had up to 36 probable cases, which are counted as real. now you see why they went from tracking deaths to cases.

Its a scam. A effing scam. And were the fools.

  24. DBS Says:

And some people just talk crap. And we know the type. Yes the person had Covid but that did not kill them it was the fluid in their lungs from the pneumonia they developed that did. GTFOH.

  25. BD Says:

not worth the risk..once someone dies, they never are coming back. Football will be back I love it ,but no sir not that much..

  26. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Maybe they could hold some  guys back at One Buc Place while the others were practicing in front of the fans at the stadium.  This would be in keeping with the “two track” practices that BA instituted last year.

Certainly this would allow them to evaluate the rookies, UDFAs, etc.  This would allow them to maximize the time used for getting the rotational and backup guys into whatever playing shape they can.  It might allow linemen to get more of the contact reps they need too.

Of course it might help a bit in keeping groups of guys separated from each other as much as is practical.

Dumbest comment of the day is shared by “herd immunity” and “.017” Death Rate. That is 2 out of every 100 infected go dead. Is that the same for common cold or flu?
And think how many would be dead if we had ~90% herd immunity. 234,000 Floridians known infections- -let’s say twice that many have it. So 600,000 Floridians have the virus. Then let’s double that so that maybe as many as 1.2 M have it. Only 17 M to go to get to herd immunity. 2% of that is 340,000 dead in Florida ONLY!
Still want to try for herd immunity?
(Disclaimer: these are back of envelop calculations so these are rough figures.)

  32. stpetebucsfan Says:

The link will trigger the moderation but hopefully Joe will let this get through in the interest of education.

There has been discussion about “herd Immunity”. Here is what the MAYO Clinic says about Covid 19 and herd immunity. Of course the MAYO is a highly respected “mainstream” health organization so do we trust them?

    https://www.mayoclinic.org/herd-immunity-and-coronavirus/art-20486808

However, there are some major problems with relying on community infection to create herd immunity to the virus that causes COVID-19. First, it isn’t yet clear if infection with the COVID-19 virus makes a person immune to future infection.

Research suggests that after infection with some coronaviruses, reinfection with the same virus — though usually mild and only happening in a fraction of people — is possible after a period of months or years. Further research is needed to determine the protective effect of antibodies to the virus in those who have been infected.

Even if infection with the COVID-19 virus creates long-lasting immunity, a large number of people would have to become infected to reach the herd immunity threshold. Experts estimate that in the U.S., 70% of the population — more than 200 million people — would have to recover from COVID-19 to halt the epidemic. If many people become sick with COVID-19 at once, the health care system could quickly become overwhelmed

  33. JimmyJack Says:

St Pete you really cant trust much and almost nothing. Everything is argued and rebutted and we get two opposing opinions. At the end of the day this thing is out the spreading and we all gotta figure out for ourselves how much risk we take.

Lucky for me I’m young and healthy and so is my family so we are very low risk. I know you said your older, hopefully your are in good health, so God bless and hopefully you make through it OK. My best advice if your worried about it is to avoid catching it for as long as you can. You might not be able to avoid it forever but treatment seems to be more and more successful over time so the longer you can avoid it the better chance to fight it off.

  34. JimmyJack Says:

And try to avoid it the best you can during spikes like right now. This is not a good day to catch it when our healthcare is struggling to keep up and have enough resources. Hey your a Floridian, you know how to hunker down proper.

  35. bucsfaninoregon Says:

Jimmy, nice thoughts. I’m in the same boat. My health risks read like the CDC list of virus problems. I get it- -I’m dead.
The reason that I post on this site ridiculing those that think it business as usual is simply I think it is stupid to wonder how many passes Brady will complete to Gronk when the whole season is likely to go up in smoke. So far I haven’t heard one cogent scenario showing how it will work with football even sans spectators.
Believe me, no one wants the 2020 season to occur. The Oregon Ducks are truly loaded this year and I wanted to see them in the playoffs. But, I don’t think it will happen- -that’s my point.

  36. bucsfaninoregon Says:

err, no one wants the 2020 to occur MORE THAN ME.

  37. stpetebucsfan Says:

    JimmyJack

Thanks for the concern. I’m careful but not overly cautious. I do not wipe stuff down incessantly because most of my reading reveals the infection generally comes from contact with an infected person not an infected surface.

Your last sentence is the most important and we can be factually optimistic.

Back in the horrible days of the NYC spike only 20% of the people who went into ICU came out again. We’ve learned so much from treating so many patients that now we’ve reversed those numbers. 80% come out and 20% die.

I’m very positive….not with Covid I hope lol. It’s just a matter of time.

The most frustrating thing for me is that this year football is not the same.
Even if we get a season the records will all have a giant *.

  38. D1 Says:

    Stpete,

To your point of treatments improving.

There’s been 10 consecutive weeks of declining deaths from covid 19.
Last week the number is under 100 (subject to change) . The worst weeks were in late March.

Obviously, the focus has been on new cases and they’re escalating at an alarming rate. If the death rates continue to decline or hold steady over the next month then it’s time to move forward.

  39. BucsFanForever Says:

Today, the Ravens announced that they would allow 14,000 fans to attend games this year, in a 71,000 seat stadium. The Ravens have deferred 2020 tickets to 2021 for permanent seat license holders. The Chiefs and Packers have also today announced significantly reduced seating for 2020, with the Chiefs offering either a full refund or a credit for the 2021 season. The NFL is leaving the policy up to each team.

Joe – is there anything from the Bucs yet on their 2020 policy???

Are teams not required to practice in stadiums this year? Could have sworn I read that somewhere.

  42. Clean House Says:

OR Bucs fan where in OR are you?

  43. Hodad Says:

With only 2 preseason games, and limited practice time, I don’t see the need for 90 players in camp. Throw that out the window, 65, 70 tops.

  44. Jack M. Karako Says:

Buddhaboy19 – don’t believe everything you see on FoxNews. Even younger people who have come down with COVID have said that it feels like they were slammed by a train, and recovery is lengthy with unknown lifetime affects. Millionaire athletes, who already risk physical injury on the field, are not gladiators risking life for pleasure of sports fans. They do not want to risk their earning power for long term lung, heart, kidney and liver ailments that the scientific community and COVID survivors claim to have after overcoming the virus. If there is a season – great. If not, thank God we are alive.

We’re not the only one that talks about the upcoming season. NFL Network does it all day long. Not ever a mention of the season being cancelled. We only hear from the likes of you and a few others.

If the season goes on will you finally shut up about it being cancelled?
