Jason Licht Taken To Task

July 27th, 2020

Ranked

It seems a national analyst has issues with a Bucs shot-caller.

July is the month of lists. You have a list, that guy has a list, the dude over there has a list. July cannot pass, it seems, unless fireworks (legal and illegal) are fired off and every red-blooded American compiles some sort of NFL list.

Therefore, Patrick Daugherty of Rotoworld.com jumps into the fray with his annual general managers list. Daugherty is not very kind to Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht this year, ranking him No. 25.

25. Jason Licht, Bucs

Jason Licht has three coaches and zero playoff wins to show for six years on the job. That he has yet to be pink slipped with that résumé is a remarkable act of front office survival. After attempting to build around 2015 No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston, Licht has now resorted to the get rich quick scheme of 43-year-old Tom Brady. Licht needs Brady to accomplish things that have literally never been done before for the move to pay off. To Licht’s credit, he has put the weapons in place for Brady to do so. He also leveraged Brady’s arrival into a zero-downside acquisition of Rob Gronkowski. 2019 Licht stroke of genius Shaq Barrett is back via the franchise tag. The Bucs are not lacking for high-end talent. Licht desperately needs Brady to be the missing piece. If he’s not, someone else will be assembling the Bucs’ puzzle in 2021.

Daugherty seems to be talking out of both sides of his mouth. First, he torches Licht for the Bucs not making the playoffs under his watch and going through coaches nearly as quickly as Joe goes through cold Big Storm beers on a hot summer afternoon.

Look, there is no way to airbrush the Bucs’ record under Licht. That cannot be wished away. As the great Derrick Brooks would say, “It is what it is.”

First, let’s get one thing straight: Licht didn’t hire lousy Lovie Smith. Licht was not on the Bucs payroll when Team Glazer lured Lovie. If anything, Licht should be lauded for having the stones to run the guy out of town.

(Joe thinks of all the starters Lovie claimed were either no good or couldn’t play for him — man! Lovie is without question the worst evaluator of talent Joe has ever seen from an NFL head coach.)

Then Daugherty gives Licht props for assembling the talent now on the team. The Bucs are considered a playoff threat on the heels’ of Licht’s wheeling and dealing.

Has Licht made mistakes? Of course. Could it be worse? Absolutely. Just look at all the nonsense in Washington. My, what a stew Bruce Almighty cooked up in our nation’s capital!

How Mark Dominick continues to escape criticism puzzles me…

As for Licht….he has had some terrible draft picks…..perhaps the last two drafts are an exception (not a coincidence) that BA & Bowles have essentially made the picks…..along with FAs Suh, Barrett & Perriman….

  2. geno711 Says:

I am all in with this coaching staff hiring last year.
Then the assembling of the defense over the last couple of years.
Then the free agency pickup of Tom Brady.

Before the last two years, I agree with the 25th ranked GM.
If this starts to payoff this year, how quick to we wait to move him into top 10 category.

How about this for a record at the start of his career – how many Bucs fans would be calling for this coaches head:
    6-10
    7-9
    7-9
    11-5
    5-11
    and
    5-11

After that 5-11 season, this coach went on to win 6 Super Bowls and play in 3 others. Thankfully for New England they hung in there with Belichick.

As Joe said, I do not count the Lovie Smith decision. I give Licht these two seasons with Brady and an alleged improved coaching and defense.

  3. Ndog Says:

When you draft a QB #1 overall and proceed to not draft any olinemen, pass rusher or running back in the first round during said QBs tenure you should fired period end of discussion.

Is it at all ironic while Jameis was here no olinemen drafted in the first round and no huge pass rusher brought in via big money or first round pick?

First year for Brady BOOM first round olinemen and BOOM and huge amount of cash on a franchise pass rusher.

    Weird isn’t it…..🤔

  4. ATrain Says:

    Jamies????

Oh that bench rider on the Saints sorry didn’t know who you were talking about

Hahah still making excuses and the guy barely got A minimum contract to be a back up

You would be the guy on Titanic saying everything is ok

  5. 76SeasonBuc Says:

Joe- you say it could be worse? How can it get worse than zero postseason appearances (forget wins) during Lichts tenure? There are no consolation prizes in football. No prizes for “assembling the most talented roster that never sees a playoff game.”

The fact of the matter is that Licht has failed. I’m sure he is a nice guy and a good human being but he’s failed at building a winning football team. Period.

  6. Joe Says:

Joe- you say it could be worse? How can it get worse than zero postseason appearances (forget wins) during Lichts tenure?

Pretty sure Joe included an example in the story of how.

  7. 76SeasonBuc Says:

I don’t see the relevance of the example, Joe. Not trying to be argumentative, but Washington is only several seasons removed from winning their division and appearing in the playoffs. Again, when it comes down to brass tacks, the Bucs don’t have a winning team and the buck stops with the GM.

  8. PSL Bob Says:

Geno711, we wish we were 11-5 one year. 9-7 in 2016 was the best the team could muster under Licht’s tenure to date, and that wasn’t good enough for the playoffs.

  9. Joe Says:

I don’t see the relevance of the example, Joe.

Joe’s pretty sure its spelled it out in the story. But just to help, when a team is squeezed to change its name, minority owners are bailing, the team in embroiled in all sorts of potential lawsuits and the owner may be forced to sell his team, yeah, Joe would say the Redskins are in worse shape than the Bucs.

  10. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Ndog is back?

I guess the Covid rumor wasn’t true.

    Damn……

  11. Allbuccedup Says:

I agree Joe it could be worse. I believe that its the Glazers boys fault, Lovie couldn’t evaluate talent and the Glazer boys can’t evaluate GMs and coaches. When Malcolm passed on the football sense went with him 😢.

  12. DoooshLaRue Says:

Actually this could be great news!

It’s possible that JayMiss’s love liquid is actually the cure and Ndog is the first to be cured.

    Oh my

  13. Alanbucsfan Says:

NDog has a point- the 2016 draft had several quality OLinemen available and Bucs took Hargreaves

  14. Bobby M. Says:

At the end of the day, you get measured on results…..especially in the NFL. Licht’s results are terrible. There’s promise this season, all the pieces seem to be there, but the product on the field has to produce. Time will tell.

  15. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Licht’s done better lately but still no playoffs. At some point we will have to improve or get rid of him.

  16. Buczilla Says:

I rip on Licht all the time but he has done a good job lately. He also drafted the current best receiver in the league in Mike Evans and another top 10 receiver in Chris Godwin. If one of our current running backs ends up being good, or if he goes out and aquires a good one, I will trust him again.

  17. John Sinclear Says:

I was not aware that the General Manager of the team played on the field. Does he play offense or defense? What position ?? The players on the field win or lose games.

  18. Ndog Says:

I know you all are flying high now but in two years this team is going to be HORRIBLE at best. Just look at this list of who will not be here in two years:

    Brady (QB)
    Gronk (TE)
    Smith (LT)
    Jensen (C)
    Suh (DT)
    JPP (OLB)
    David (ILB)
    Arains (Head Coach)

So please tell me how you replace the two most important people in a franchise in two years (QB/HC) along with the starting Center, best TE in NFL history, starting DT, top 2 pass rusher on the team, and team Capitan on defense?

This is just the last stupid thing he will do to this franchise, but it will set us back for at least a decade.

  19. Mike Says:

Drafting a QB at #1 that is a bust sets you back a decade……. this will just add 2 years to the total.

  20. SlyPirate541 Says:

No one ever talks about improvement.

We wanted Licht to be a great GM from day 1 but the reality it was his first GM gig. He had a rocky start but he’s gotten better every year with coaching hires, FA acquisitions, and draft picks. He’s really good at managing the cap and keeping us out of dead money situations.

The arrow is pointed up on Licht. I’d keep him.

  21. Buccfan37 Says:

Licht still sucks. His droopy on the job training is a dismal failure.

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

Ali Marpet may have been a steal but he’s pro bowl material. The Bucs spent a fortune on a proven center…not gambling a first rounder but spending the very top dollar on JW’s center…DS was taken in the 2nd round 34th overall. Dot was the retread that they failed to replace. Cappa will play for Brady.

IE…ALL OF THE SAME GUYS WHO PLAYED FOR JW EXCEPT FOR ONE…ONE…ARE THE SAME GUYS WHO WILL BLOCK FOR BRADY!!!

VHG was a mistake! Period! Nothing to do with his position. If he was a pro bowl DB a shutdown corner we would be thrilled with him.

  23. Jmarkbuc Says:

J Licht is not a good GM, and never will be. He riding the Arians/Brady train popularity train right now, but that doesn’t change the facts

  24. Roy T. Buford Says:

C’mon Ndog…we gave Winston 5 FREAKIN YEARS! Why are you so distraught? Keep your immunities up with positive thoughts or you will get the COVID.

So what do we all do, just say screw the next two seasons–will be lousy after that. Such negativity. You should see a priest…HURRY!

Now, instead of worrying about who WON’T be with the team in two years, think about who CAN be with the team in two years. Draft, free agency, etc. You’re totally unarmed.

  25. Ndog Says:

Yes Roy giving a QB two great WRs and two average TEs is the road to success. Let’s close our eyes and pretend anything else on the team was even average during his tenure.

The FACTS are he gave this franchise way more than it gave him.

  26. Youngbucs Says:

    ^^^^^^^^😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  27. Youngbucs Says:

He gave this franchise embarrassment on and off the field. And they still paid that clown he should be grateful.

  28. Youngbucs Says:

Had to take his picture off the stadium and still paid him giving him every opportunity!!!!!!!

  29. Youngbucs Says:

    Gtfoh

  30. Roy T. Buford Says:

Ndog, Pardon me, Sir, but it was Winston who was the #1 Overall Pick. It’s not what they should have given him. You remember the “Weapons for Winston” spin and they DID give him the WRs, including DJax (that he couldn’t use), Brate, and drafted high in the O line department, including LT and G, right?

You should ask what Jameis Winston gave his team? And I’ll answer that. He gave them selfish, knuckleheaded, embarassing behaviour that got him suspended, that got ME13 suspended, record breaking interceptions, playing just well enough down the stretch of lost seasons due largely to him, to convince people that he deserved MORE chances.

    Yeah, thanks Winston.

  31. Youngbucs Says:

    ^^^^^^💯

  32. Joe in Michigan Says:

Ndog is out of hiding (although we knew he/she was Clean House the whole time, there’s not a human alive that loves JW more, including JW’s wife and family). Welcome back, you might want to treat people with more respect this time around. Capisce?

  33. Sport Says:

JW would do well to become a journeyman. He’s one conduct issue from getting kicked out and he signed for league minimum to be a 3rd (possibly 4th) stringer this year.

I appreciate his humble decision. But with another draft class coming next year, a lot of clubs are set at QB. he won’t find a starting job outright. He will have to hope for an injury and perform at a consistent level he’s NEVER shown.

Baseball is looking like a serious option for him.

But sure, he’s the best QB ever to some of you 1oc1’rs.

    In BA I Trust!
