Gronk The Wideout?

July 2nd, 2020

Lobbies for new position.

Joe reads and hears and sees so many things related to the Bucs that sometimes they all run together.

So pardon Joe for forgetting where he read/heard/saw the following, but some talking head was seriously discussing that with the Bucs possessing the best threesome at tight end in the league, all very athletic and tall guys, Cam Brate, O.J. Howard and Rob Gronkowski, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians should dabble with 13 personnel (one back, three tight ends).

Arians, he said, should have all three tight ends line up wide as well as the one wide receiver, which would essentially make the 13 personnel set a four-wide formation.

The football sophist explained that Brate, Gronk and Howard are so big and athletic that those guys potentially going one-on-one against  would be a nightmare for defenses.

It seems Gronk is down with that idea.

On Instagram yesterday, Gronk posted a photo from a practice with park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady. Joe assumes the photo was from yesterday.

The photo showed Gronk lining up wide left on the numbers. Gronk wrote, “Split me out wide, sweaty sweat 💦”

Joe isn’t sure what “Sweaty sweat” meant but Gronk out wide like a receiver is just a delicious thought. If Gronk is fully healthy, what corner would stop him one-on-one? The dude is so big and strong.

Man, if the Bucs used Brate, Gronk, Howard and Mike Evans out wide, that literally would be the “Dunkaneers” that Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht talked about when he first came to town in 2014.

Yes, maybe for a different look. I’d rather have Mr. Godwin out there more than most of the others.

  2. Clean House Says:

Line up Gronk and Evans right next to each other.
Although I was not impressed with the lack of creativity for Howard by the coaches last season.

    I’m not holding my breath.

  3. D1 Says:

If it’s putting the best 11 on the field, go empty which puts Godwin on the field.

At slot , Godwin could be moving from either side by a jet motion which would overload any defensive secondary in the league.

  4. Alanbucsfan Says:

The formation will depend on who they play and what matchup they are trying to take advantage of.

  5. richbucsfan Says:

Yes, it all runs together for me as well. This is the time of the great Bucs hype-machine. It is a predictable yearly event. Every year the Bucs have just what it takes to compete for the playoffs and every year they flounder. This season? Oh my…Tom Brady, Gronk, improved OL, budding defense, Super Bowl in Tampa…this time will be there! Really? Ok. We’ll see what COVID has to say about it, what injuries have to say about it, what depth has to say about it. Am I jaded? Yep.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I love that formation and that is exactly when we should run the ball……a bit of creativity with playcalling will improve our run game.

  7. Hodad Says:

Joe isn’t sure what sweaty sweat meant. Joe, it’s what me, and Gronk call his girlfriend!

  8. Jason Says:

Wasn’t this the same idea Joe had last year for O.J. Howard. I don’t see it happening though. That would require imagination, and that doesn’t seem to be B.L.’s strong suit.

  9. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

    Perfect goal line offense.

  10. unbelievable Says:

Gotta make good use of 12 and 13 personnel formation this year.

    Keep defenses guessing!

  11. Mike Johnson Says:

LMAO here. I guess Gronls antics have to entertain us somehow right/ I mean 10 mil is great money to play 8 to 10 games for one season. I know..everybody in Buc kingdom knows..Gronk has not finished an entire season since 2011. or is that..fake news too?

  12. stpetebucsfan Says:

It didn’t take long to show the weakness in that plan. One of those TE’s must sit to get CG14 on the field.

  13. Guinness8 Says:

Line em up with the 13 personnel and have Godwin line up as the RB

  14. PSL Bob Says:

I think if Chucky or some like-minded offensive guru were running this offense, no one could stop it. The passing game will already be lights out, and because of that the running game will improve dramatically. With the Buc’s current array of offensive weapons and some creative play calling this team would be unbelievable. I’m just fearful that Arians and Leftwich will stick to the old playbook and do the predictable. That will still yield good results, but with these weapons, great should be the expectation.

“Why does TB12 screamed at his past OCs?

It’s because he knows the quick short passing game better than any coach or player

20 years in NE with numerous different offensive coords and personnel
and the offense is still consistent and proficient

The reason TB12 is adamant about practicing during these questionable times is because the TB players and Leftwich offence in the short passing game is pathetic

TB12 knows the defenses will come after him and he knows the short passing game must be better for him to succeed and survive

    …to be continued”
