Godwin = Points

July 20th, 2020

Bucs WR Chris Godwin.

You can talk about every friggin’ stat you want to but there is only one stat more important than points.

That would be wins.

Back to points: The Bucs finished tied for third last year in points scored.

Only two teams that finished in the top-10 in points scored failed to make the playoffs. Your Tampa Bay Buccaneers, baby, and the Dallas Cowboys.

The Bucs scored 458 points in 2019, a great deal more than the previous season when the Bucs had 386.

Why was that? NextGen stats seems to point to Chris Godwin as the reason. Godwin scored nine touchdowns last year. That’s 54 points. And NextGen stats demonstrated that Godwin averaged more points per target than any other wide receiver in the game in 2018. See the chart below.

Now Joe wouldn’t say Godwin was the main reason the Bucs scored more points. He scored seven touchdowns last season, that’s 42 points. But Joe gets what the NextGen stat suggests, that Godwin in a damn valuable receiver.

I believe 100% in Chris Godwin on his own merits. He’s super talented, laser focused, confident and works his tail off.

TB is obviously an all-time great. It will be exciting to see what he can accomplish with Godwin.

I for one believe that Jameis Winston, had more than a large part in his receivers success. He also put in much time and dedication and built an important chemistry with his receivers.

It will be revealing to see what transpires. I don’t bet against TB and Godwin, Evans etc.

However I think Bucs fans may very well be in for the startling revelation that they had a very special talent in their midst, who was kore than a key factor in the offense having been so high powered.

    JW
    #1 in NFL total offense
    #1 in total passing yards
    #1 passing yards per game
    #2 in TD’s

Check yo sheet to find out what most of you took for granted behind door #1

    More than a key factor

    Ndog list the negatives too.

Granted you don’t because THERE IS NO DOWNSIDE. NOTHING BUT UPSIDE.

  4. Buczilla Says:

If Godwin puts up similar numbers this year to what he did last year, then he’ll be the second best receiver in the NFL behind only Mike. He’s gotta do it more than once for me to put him above other guys, but I have faith in him. Hell, I wouldn’t be shocked If he overtook Mike this year for number one. Crazy good, tough as nails player that we are lucky to have. Good job Licht, now please go get us a threat at running back.

    I’m not NDog

Clean House, I agree with all that you said, including what a talent JW is. BUT you have to include the turnovers – it is a big factor. One of the most important real stats is TO Differential, right? And JW killed us there.

Yes, it will be very interesting to see what TB can do. I believe TB does not have to score as many points to improve the W-L of this team. It will be keeping TOs down and all TB’s intangibles.

  7. SOEbuc Says:

Tampabucsbro… definitely nothing but upside. The only reason he might get a slight change in his numbers is because of using more TE plays probably in the red zone this year.

^^Why opposing secondary cannot leave anyone open.^^

Clean House. Hey nuggler, clean off yo chin.

  10. Clean House Says:

What does that mean Jim Buc 2?
What are you attempting to say to me?

If his numbers are the same or better I hope it’s because. Brady is playing that well. Everyone should know Brady loves to spread the ball around. With the WRs, TEs and RBs he has in Tampa, it will be interesting to see how much better the team is. Winston did not do what Brady will. He wasn’t as cerebral as Brady. Plus, Brady has seen pretty much any D you can imagine. He will find someone open that Winston never did. Now if Brady is declining…all bets are off to what will happen. I think this year he will be Ok, next season is the question. From the reports that I have seen Brady might have lost a bit of zip. But if the OL can keep the D off him, he will still produce big numbers.

All that said, I would not be surprised if all the weapons he has have similar numbers. Meaning when you look at the stats next off season you very well might see say 50 catches by each WR, 40-ish by TEs and say 30 per RB. If Bruce is seriously going to use some plays Brady likes, it is really going to be special. Gronk might start the year as the leading pass catcher due to how many years he played with Brady. Once a good bond with the WRs happens… that’s when it will get interesting. Godwin is similar in size to other WRs Brady has played with and is faster with better hands. I look for him to be a go to target by game 3 or 4. Evans in the deep area of the field if Brady can get it there is going to be lethal. And then potential Pro Bowl TEs in the red zone and goal line area.

This could be a very special year in Tampa.

I live in Houston, but I am a Brady/Michigan fan! Go Bucs!
