Shaq Says He’s Staying With Tampa Bay

Says he will stay with Bucs.

UPDATED: 2:40 p.m. – Last week NFL sack king Shaq Barrett was on NFL Network and said he was “50-50” on signing his franchise tag by the deadline of July 15.

(The “deadline” only means July 15 is the last day a long-term contract extension can be negotiated until the end of the season.)

Today Shaq went on SiriusXM NFL Radio to clear things up and reassure Bucs fans he’s going to be wearing pewter and red this fall.

Appearing on “The Blitz” with Bruce Murray and Brady Quinn, Shaq said he has yet to sign his franchise tag because his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is still talking turkey with the Bucs about a long-term deal. When Murray asked him point-blank if he will sign his franchise tag by July 15 if a deal cannot be worked out, Shaq replied, “Yeah, yeah, that is accurate.”

When Quinn mentioned to Shaq that a lot of Bucs fans would be relieved to know he will be with the team this fall, Shaq said, “I am most definitely going to be here next year.”

Joe will breathe a sigh of relief along with Bucs fans.

Shaq appeared to say (his phone cut out a bit) that he’s working on signing a one-year contract that could be more than the franchise tag, which is worth just under $16 million this season. Shaq added that him not joining workouts with Tom Brady in Tampa has been, “kind of like a holdout type of thing trying to figure out to get a deal done, but not really a holdout. I’m not an offensive guy anyway.”

You can hear an excerpt from Shaq’s appearance below courtesy of SiriusXM NFL Radio.

where have i heard this reassurance before, i live in orlando, and i do believe it was a guy named shaq also, oh yeah shaq o’neal, as he bolted for the lakers

  5. Tvan101 Says:

@james west The Magic offered shaw less than a max contract. This allowed the lakers to swoop in, it had nothing to do with Shaq. He was gonna resign until Orlando insulted him with less than max.

  6. lokog Says:

    pay him and godwin

  7. Pa fan Says:

I just hope Bucs find a way to lock down both shaq and Godwin two of my favorite Buccaneers. They will be huge to the future kf this franchise!

  8. lambchop Says:

The Bucs have him listed as a LB and he would get paid an additional 2M if he were listed as a DE. I guarantee that is one of the things holding things up. Everybody and their mother (including slimy Drew), know the Bucs have no cap space and still have to get a deal done for Chris Godwin.

Why not just say it’s all about the 2M? I think he deserves it, but if it’s about a long-term deal, everyone knows that will have to wait till next year and if they want to start those talks early, fine, but sign the franchise tag one way or another. The hold up on this year’s contract is the positional designation.

  9. Clean House Says:

Dumb, he just lost his leverage

  10. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

He’s not going anywhere!! at least not until 2021 …

  11. TDTB Says:

What rationale justifies signing him to a one year deal for more than the franchise tag. A multi-year deal that has a declining salary might make sense but a one year doesn’t make sense to me.

  12. DaBux Says:

Nah, let us dump some bad contracts, extend him next year and find a way to sign Gronk for one more year after this one. Football is and should be fun again in the Bay!

  13. bojim Says:

If he doesn’t sign and holds out for the season his price tag goes down. Both he and especially his agent knows that. Shaq wants to be here. I’m not concerned.

  14. SOEbuc Says:

DE in round one and DT in round two 2021.

  15. Chill Buc Says:

He must not play much poker. He done showed his cards

  16. ModHairKen Says:

Why would they pay him more than the franchise tag for a one year contract? Would they untag him and then tag Chris Godwin?

  17. Cainishere Says:

The Bucs probably should give Shaq a long contract. Tie him down for his career.
    Godwin should be priority next season. 2021 Draft – 1 – QB 2 – DT 3 – DB
Does anybody know if Sinette is in quarantine or has he been participating with Brady and his workouts? Go BUCS!!
