Dissecting The Hybrid

June 19th, 2020

A great NFL analyst you probably never heard of, a guy who also may be the next great quarterback whisperer, is a man greatly familiar with Bucco Bruce Arians.

He’s Jordan Palmer, Carson Palmer’s little brother. The former NFL backup tutors top QBs coming out of college and joined SiriusXM NFL Radio this week.

Jordan Palmer dropped a lot of great insight on the Bucs, including that his big brother believes Byron Leftwich is “brilliant, hard working, great dude, very mature.” Leftwich was Carson Palmer’s QB coach during his final days in Arizona.

The younger Palmer talked about the history many Bucs fans and analysts brought up this time last year: how Arians quarterbacks struggle during their first year in his system.

For that reason, Palmer believes what the Bucs roll out offensively will be a true hybrid of what Arians, Leftwich and Tom Brady want. He speculated the truth regarding the playcalling and play-design balance won’t come out. So fans should look for clues.

“There’s no way you’re going to tell Tom Brady to keep your mouth shut, come over here and run our plays. So who’s contributing and what does that look like?” Palmer said.

The traditional and true Arians offense leaves a ton on a quarterback to figure out presnap, Palmer said, along with the offensive line because it relies on so many five-man protections. He noted that Arians’ offenses were extraordinarily innovative in the area of receiver adjustments, specifically “sight adjusts” that put a ton of responsibility on the receiver — and lead to problems.

Those take a ton of work to integrate with a new QB, Palmer said, so he’s not writing off the Bucs offense looking a lot different this season.

So much of what he touched on is what will make the Bucs so hard to predict in September. That can be good — or bad. It’s also why an old fashioned impose-your-will run game would be so helpful.

That is very cool insight. I am looking forward to seeing what they come up with. Imagine, the Bucs, Offensive Juggernauts! Feared by D coaches everywhere! Never thought to see this in my lifetime. I can’t wait!!!

The run game…..run game….fix the run game…..almost every article…..as if the desperate calls from JBF are going to have an influence on what Bucs GM & Coaches do……months & months…..last year….FA period….draft & now….to no avail….
Joe seems to forget that we have DARE!!!

It’s also why an old fashioned impose-your-will run game would be so helpful… RUN RUN RUN I AGREE ….. we the OL to make 1 hole a hard nosed runner willget you out of the basement statistically and north of 3.75 a carry average

  4. Roy T. Buford Says:

Great article for comments, Joe. Where to start? First, I can’t stand the whole “first year in Arian’s system” thing. Coaches and QBs don’t have that luxury in the “win now NFL” anymore…and the offense really does not seem that complicated. So I think that’s more just a jingle people picked up just because some QBs had trouble the first year.

Second, I do agree Tom Brady will have a huge say, and I’ll as far to believe it will be MORE weight than what his OC, Leftwich, has. However, if it is true that Arians’ offense “puts a ton” on the receivers, I am betting only a few new wrinkles will show up, and they will be limited mostly what Tom Brady wants, especially with no real offseaon, no OTAs, mini camps, etc. That is, why make the receivers start over, save for the new guys?

Last, Leftwich: “brilliant, hard working, great dude, very mature.” Ooooh. Not so sure ALL are true (“brilliant”) given what we saw with formation and play calling too many times last year. “Hard working, great guy” is essential but won’t get you far without being effective. That said, Leftwich can claim a very high power NFL offense last year was largely his doing. What would he be without Arians though?

  5. Sport Says:

Brady knows how to read defenses, will make adjustments as needed and hit the open man over and over and over again.

That ability will bring out the running and establish balance on offense.

    In BA I Trust!

It’s funny how everyone is writing off Vaughn before he plays a snap…..

  7. Joe in Michigan Says:

Yes, Ke’Shawn Vaughn…One of the Joes always says something along the lines of “Vaughn was only a 3rd Round pick”, yet goes on and on about Devonta Freeman, who was a 4th Round pick. True, Freeman was good for a couple of years, but also hasn’t been good for a couple of years. You might say Vaughn is unproven and Freeman is proven, I say Vaughn has a lot of tread on his tires, while Freeman could very well be riding on donuts.

  8. Roy T. Buford Says:

Chris Godwin was a third round pick too. While everyone gushed over Evans, D. Jackson, and Brate going into 2017 (rigthfully so), Godwin came in and quietly made a name for himself. Nothing wrong with lower expecations for 3rd round picks than higher rounds; and it makes it that much nicer when you strike it rich.

Lightning has just closed its training facility. Yeah, tell me again how this NFL season is going to happen at all. NOT!

  11. Roy T. Buford Says:

@Imon, that is what the facists anarchists want…close it all down. NO! Consider testing positive with closure to follow is what is supposed to happen. Those who are infected are quarantined for 14 days, and they clean the facility. It’s going to happen. I do believe folks should be less wreckless in public. Too many inconsiderate folks are not covering up their faces. I’m not for making it law…you can leglislate for every moron. 4 simple rules to go by for a few more months: 1. Wear a mask in public. 2. Social distance 6 feet. 3. Don’t touch your face. 4. Wash your hands often.

  12. Roy T. Buford Says:

^^Correction: Can’t leglislate for every moron

  13. Joe in Michigan Says:

Good point on Godwin being a 3rd Rounder, RTB. Sometimes you get a steal.

  14. Imon Says:

@Roy, I couldn’t agree with you more about people disregarding common sense rules. But that is the fundamental problem… they can quarantine people and sterilize every surface, and then one guy goes to get a beer and the whole transmission cycle starts right over again. Given that FL is the state with the highest runaway new infection rate, it is pretty well unavoidable that at some point some elderly coaching staff (Gawd please don’t let it be Bucco Bruce) is going to end up on a ventilator. That would be such a PR disaster for the league (any league, not just NFL) that it’s going to make proceeding with any semblance of a season well nigh impossible IMHO.

  15. Roy T. Buford Says:

@Imon…Ouch! Hope no one ends up on a ventilator, obviously! Is Fl really “runaway?” What about testing, and deaths. New cases…sure. But I think all knew that with opening the economy. The key to that was letting supply chain for medical support catch up and in the process, protect the vulnerable better. That’s happened. I just think the same folks saying all that bad stuff are the same ones that didn’t catch how bad NY Gov and NYC Mayor were doing. Florida is paradise. People are tired of being couped up. Yup. Still…We could use some military self-discipline here. By all. Look at population in FL and other states. Let’s take Maryland for example. Not a whole lot of ruckus on that is there? They SUCK in how they’ve responded in Baltimore. Not a peep from CNN. This COVID stuff is bad–not overblown. But…prudence is key. And quite frankly, FL has done pretty well. Yup, folks gotta double down again. Totally agree, PR disaster for the league…which is why I will bet they don’t let it happen. The NFL will self-discipline. Nothing will be perfect. But it will tighter tighter than the community the teams live in, right? There will be more people screaming, “C’mon man, play football” than those saying “Excuse me, Sir, close it down.” The NFL will make it so they can blame the locals for the cases…as THEY are being MORE diligent. That’s my hunch.

  16. Roy T. Buford Says:

^^^Let me add. The Baltimore Ravens and NE Patriots will be able to say “We are doing x, y, and z, Mayor (and governor).” What are YOU doing? Case closed. Play football! Empty stadium. Ummm…doubt it. But don’t know. Play football? Oh yeah, they’re playing.

  17. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

The lightning report that those testing positive were asymptomatic, other than a couple of low-grade fevers. Since we now know that asymptomatic spread was just another fear factor which has been debunked, quarantine the two who had fevers–problem solved. Once your fever is gone, back to work, just like every other coronavirus sickness ever.

  18. Imon Says:

@Roy, your points are well taken, but keep in mind that FL has quadrupled its daily positive cases in less than a week, and the hospitalizations are spiking as well. Just announced that the 9ers have at least one positive, adding to the Broncos, Texans and Cowboys positives. Clemson has over two dozen positives, the Phillies and the Jays have just shut down… So again IMHO: When you start losing player after player to quarantines or worse, just exactly who is going to be on the field playing? Football robots? 🙂

  19. Chesapeake Bay Bucco Says:

To say: “There’s no way you’re going to tell Tom Brady to keep your mouth shut, come over here and run our plays” is just stupid. That has never been BA’s MO. When he took over at OC (read the book, Palmer!), he spent 2 weeks going through his playbook w/Big Ben and adjusting to what Ben liked/felt comfortable with. Just stupid to even say that. IMHO.

  20. SOEbuc Says:

I was excited about Godwin before they drafted him. He was posted somewhere on a Bucs possible draft picks. Watched the film and he was good. Projected mid two and we got him mid three. LET’S GO TYLER JOHNSON!!!

    #RedZoneKillas

    GO BUCS!!!

  21. stpetebucsfan Says:

BCP and other who have continued to float the canard that there is no asymptomatic transmission.

One poster even went so far as to quote the WHO saying this without also reporting that the same WHO recanted that statement the very next day calling it a “misunderstanding”.

Google is your friend…if you really care about facts and not “alternate facts”.
