Bruce Arians Talks Tua Tagovailoa

June 5th, 2020

It’s not every day you hear an NFL coach weigh in on another team’s quarterback situation.

But hey, not every coach is Bucco Bruce Arians.

Arians joined 100.9 FM in Alabama yesterday and was asked about playing time for Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Joe was very interested in the exchange because it gave insight into why the Bucs haven’t drafted a quarterback the last two years despite hiring The Quarterback Whisperer and his team of QB gurus. Frankly, Joe considers that reality an organizational misstep.

Retired running back Trent Richardson asked Arians the following: “Coach, if you was in a situation like Miami, they got Tua [Tagovailoa], would you play him this year? Or would you sit him out for the rest of the year, or would you just see if he was just ready [now].”

“I think it all depends on his health; if he’s healthy I’m playing him,” Arians said of Tagovailoa.

“I don’t think you learn anything holding a clipboard. You know, I had Peyton Manning his first year, Andrew Luck his first year, Ben [Roethlisberger] was one of those guys that went in by accident because Tommy Maddox got hurt. You miss all the practice reps, you miss the game reps. I don’t know what you learn holding a clipboard watching.”

Providing possibly more insight into Arians’ opinion of developmental rookie quarterbacks, he shared one reason he doesn’t miss college coaching. “I can’t stand rookies, let alone freshman.” There was also this Arians gem of a take on college recruiting. “You buy’em legally in the NFL.”

Maybe next year the Bucs will draft a QB to learn alongside Tom Brady. But if you believe Arians’ chatter here, it will be a very low priority.

Why draft a QB when we already have the QB of the future in Blaine Gabbert.

  2. Allbuccedup Says:

Gabbert is worse than Winston when it comes to ints look at his career stats.

  3. El Buco Realisto Says:

There is no reason to draft a rookie!!!!!!!! As soon, and it will be soon, that ole stale biscuit is shown the door, it will be a full house cleaning!!!!!!!! And the new staff will not want a stale biscuit type guy that does not fit in any system!!!!!!!!!!! Let’s not setup the next regime for failure having to work with bruce Arrogance’s mistakes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Ra'Shad Says:

Me personally, I’d like to see what Ryan Griffin can do.

  5. Elita Vita Says:

I read an article recently noting the top 1st round draft pick bust for all nfl teams. The biggest 1st round draft pick bust for the Jacksonville Jaguars was non other than Blaine Gabbert. Perhaps he has improved since then, I have no idea.

  6. gp Says:

Unless we are playing him in the next game or planning to trade for him next year, why are we talking about him?

  7. Leighroy Says:

It’s a big “no thank you” to most of the QB prospects in ’21 if their names aren’t Lawrence or Fields, unless someone else comes out of nowhere to light it up this year.

There really aren’t any decent QB’s set to be FA’s after next year either unless Jerry Jones can’t find a way to sign Dak.

The future at QB won’t arrive to Tampa until 2022….

  8. SlyPirate541 Says:

This was a ridiculous hypothetical to give BA.

I believe he would put Tua as QB2. Tua would get practice reps. He would learn the plays. Learn the timing of your route runners. Learn to read defenses pre-snap by watching tape. Plus, you let him heal further. You’re not going to the playoffs so why risk the future.

  9. Statguy Says:

That’s why he lost his patience with Winston still making rookie mistakes year 5

  10. pick6 Says:

Derek Carr will be the QB in 2022. keep building up the roster (especially trenches and defense) and don’t worry about people feel about not having all-world QB play. an average QB that allows us to keep Evans\Godwin and pay guys like Vea, Devin White, and the best of our young DBs when their time comes

  11. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Why draft a QB in first few rounds if they are going to sit under Brady for 2 years? The later rounds for a QB is risky and chances of them ever being a quality starter is low. BA and Licht was smart not to waste a pick for a QB this year. If one had slipped to the last two rounds, I am sure BA and Licht would have pulled the string.

  12. SOEbuc Says:

    Ra’Shad

Yeah is it me or did Griffin have a decent pre season last year?

  13. SOEbuc Says:

Griffin 2019 preseason: 60 for 92 for 744 yards and four TDs (one each game).

  14. stpetebucsfan Says:

For all of you guys throwing so much love at Blaine Gabbert…you’ll be glad to know that he makes MORE than JW this year.

Of course Ryan Griffin is scheduled to earn more than both of them.

Who would have thunk heading into those final two games that Griffin and Gabbert would earn more than JW in 2020…but then who thought those guys would be Bucs and JW would not.

  15. Delusional Intelligence Says:

No worries on drafting a rookie…Aaron Rodgers is the next Buc’s QB

  16. Hodad Says:

Soon as Brady hangs it up, swoop in and sign Rodgers, problem solved for another few years.

  17. Owlykat Says:

Like your thinking Hodad! There will also be some decent other QBs in the 2021 draft including Gator QB, Kyle Trask, who if Athlon Sports Magazine is accurate will be leading the top team in the SEC this year and should beat Georgia and play Bama for the SEC Title and a shot at the top four if they win. Trask has only lost three games over the last two years as QB of the Gators and didn’t even start at QB in High School. He can hit the long throws accurately like BA wants for his Offense. Let him learn from Brady next year.

  18. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Just because Gabbert makes more than Winston means nothing. I love how you detractors think you’re so smart saying the smallest meaningless thing to make it sound meaningful. Winston makes more than Scam Newton but does that make him a better qb??? Nah I don’t think so. Unless a qb of the future was available this year passing this year was smart because if Brady goes down this team is kaput anyways. Next year it’s another story or unless they get Carr after next year or as Joe has written before we can get Aaron Rogers. A one of the Greatest ever cast off who can still play at a high enough level is still better than most rookies coming out of college. We can kind of wait for that franchise qb if all this happens because what better than to have him learn from Greats??

  19. Oneilbucs Says:

All yall talking about Rogers are a bunch of losers . When are yall going to demand the franchise to develop our own quarterback lol lol ?? If they bring in Rogers man yall can keep this trash team and fan base because then it will be official to me that the city of Tampa is a bunch of losers and suckas because they you dummies will go to the games just because of the names they bring in . I will be done with this team .
