Better Than Zoom

June 15th, 2020

Funky exercise.

Now this is an exercise Joe’s never seen before.

Joe’s watched (and played) a long time. And Joe has never witnessed anything like this done by a receiver, but Joe can sure see where it would help.

In high school, Joe remembers doing something similar called “Monkey Rolls,” rolling on the ground and jumping over teammates who were also rolling but coming at you like a conveyor belt.

The drill was to improve getting up off the ground and getting on two feet quickly. As soon as you got up, you had to hit the ground again and roll and bounce back up to avoid the next teammate.

Chris Godwin is working out in a similar way; he rolls on the ground, but whenever he’s face-up he has to catch a pass. Basically, Godwin has a split second to locate the ball and catch it. Sort of like making a break in traffic and grabbing the ball coming right at your head in the blink of an eye.

There is little more to this story other than Joe thought it was a cool drill and thought readers would like to see it. Guessing Godwin gets more out of this than all his Zoom meetings combined.

Joe also has a hunch Godwin will have a helluva year this season.

  4. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

That was a lot more motivating than watching McIceCream short-stroking his sled drills.

  5. Delusional Intelligence Says:

We are indeed fortunate to have two legitimate #1 WRs. Their dedication to their craft is indeed motivating!

Now if we could only get OJ Howard to participate in this kind of a drill.

  6. Rob Tanner Says:

@Joe Who was throwing to him, in that drill?

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

Agreed Delusional. I’m hoping that the addition of Gronk will elevate OJ’s game.
One would think that these guys have an understanding of what they have: Playing a game while making millions of dollars as young men.
Most of us can only dream of that opportunity.

  8. El Buco Realisto Says:

Seems more like a drill for the last qb that was in Tampa!!!!!!!!!! The sheep know that qb!!!!! The one that after one year with the supposive self proclaimed “qb whisperer” went from ranked 19 to 33!!!!!!!!!! And who’s salary dropped even more significantly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any idoit that bought that stupid book full of lies should store it right were it belongs!!!!!!! In the trash!!!!!!!!!!! Ole stale biscuit’s reputation is already there!!!!!!! And after this season, so will his job and belongs at One Buc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. SufferingSince76 Says:

When game time comes Brady will throw to the open man. If that’s OJ he will get the ball. What he does with it will define his season.

  10. Steven007 Says:

He’s a stud for sure. Really glad we have him. reminds me a bit of an old sport science segment or Larry Fitzgerald was suspended upside down catching passes.

  11. Aceofaerospace Says:

Nice Joe. Need more like that.

  12. George Rauh Says:

He needs to be extended NOW!!! He hits the market next year he will be 18 million plus WR and we lose him.

  13. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

Word on the street is Brady caused a flood at his house form drooling after watching this video.

    Go Bucs!!!

  14. Sport Says:

Pretty cool. Body control, and ball focus. If you are a ‘body’ catcher, you couldn’t do that drill. Godwin is already great a catching in traffic, can he get even better? Knowing him, probably so.

I have zero problem locking this guy up long term.

    In BA I Trust!

As someone who has taught for the military and in civilian life has taught me one thing. While you want to impact every person in a meaningful way there will always be that handful that has been told throughout their whole lives how special and talented they are only to fall flat on their faces because they refuse to listen and learn from their superiors. IMHO Jameis was one of those types, while he had crazy potential and a natural talent he lacked the humility and discipline to shut up, listen and learn. While you can put part of that on previous coaches for coddling and for blowing smoke up his azz so that he believes he is one of the greatest of all time, you can’t put it all on BA for not getting JW to the next level. Change will only happens to those that are willing to change. Regardless of how good of a instructor or coach you are if the pupil refuses to learn then they will never succeed. If JW previous coaches started from the beginning instilling the humility and desire to BECOME one of the greatest of all time instead of being one of the greatest his path would be different than what it is today. Too many HS and Colleges push the myth that the end goal is to make it to the NFL not how to succeed in the NFL.

  16. Lou. Says:

Get so TIRED of hearing about how few JW interceptions were his fault. Like @BucFan77 says, look at the training and teaching and where it got him. BA was clearly doing a PR job in hopes that Winston would come around. Notice how the coach had all the statistics about WR deflections and bad routes but never mentioned the DBs dropping ints or receivers rescuing the QB from even more interceptions. How the team handled the off season tells us all there is to know.

On Godwin and this drill, so good to see some practice directed to special receiver skills. I think Joe wrote about Evans taking fastballs from 10 feet away to improve his hands after his sophomore season. This looks designed to either improve a strength or work on something he feels is a weakness.

  17. Joe Says:

Joe Who was throwing to him, in that drill?

    Unidentified.

Positive thinking always leads to positive results on whatever you focus on.
    Your focus determines your reality.
There are more positive thinkers in this comment box than the other so WE win.
Troll or disgruntled fan or whatever WE still win.
WE are chasing OUR 2nd ring! (Notice the correct usage of the exclamation point)
There are teams in the NFL that are dreaming of this opportunity and WE are living that dream as fans, players, and coaches.
WE want to hear cannons fire.
WE want to hear Gene’s voice take us to the promise land.
WE want to make Ronde happy.
WE want to go to La Teresa on Columbus for a victory dinner.
    We are going to Win
    PMA Go Bucs

  19. VdubVW Says:

    typo: La Teresita on Columbus

  20. Joe Says:

    La Teresita on Columbus

    Mmmmmmmmm…

  21. unbelievable Says:

I remember when everyone around here was hating on Godwin during hard knocks, because they thought his weights were too light when he was doing lateral Shoulder raises in the weight room with his gf.
