Mike Evans On Jameis, Tom Brady

May 10th, 2020

Speaks on Bucs QBs.

This is the first time Joe has heard Bucs receiver Mike Evans, who is on a path to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, speak publicly about the change of Bucs quarterbacks this offseason.

In a video chat between former Bucs receiver Louis Murphy and Evans (it was posted on Twitter so Joe considers this fair game), Murphy asked Evans about Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. The conversation soon shifted to park-violating, home-invading six-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady.

Evans made it clear that he has deep appreciation for Jameis (“He’s my dawg!”) and said he wanted Jameis back for 2020, if not longer. Evans added that he has played receiver with Jameis at quarterback longer than any other quarterback he has ever had.

Evans confessed that when he heard Brady was coming to town, his emotions were eased.

“The opportunity to get Tom Brady, like that’s Tom Brady, bro,” Evans told Murphy. “That’s the greatest of all time. He’s a franchise-changer. He’s about to change the franchise.

“Like, ticket sales are going through the roof. Like, primetime games. And he understands football [like] nobody understands it at that level. … It’s going to be great to work with him. …

“It’s going to be great for the city, and just great overall. I hope we have a great season and everybody stays healthy.”

Joe has the video embedded below so watch it while it remains on social media.

You can tell in the video both Evans’ pain of losing Jameis but his youthful excitement to get to catch passes from Brady.

Joe the haters are going to be very angry at this article. According to them all of those numbers Evans put up had nothing to do with Jameis.

  2. cgmaster27 Says:

Trolls gonna love this article Joe. First they’ll attack you for “defending” Jameis and “slandering” Tom with your nick names at the beginning. Then they’ll tell you Mike Evans numbers have nothing to do with Jameis because he “can’t hit receivers in stride”. Then they’ll attack my post because I don’t mind calling them out for it. And by the way I was all for signing the goat and letting Jameis go at this point despite being a huge Jameis fan. Jameis wanted too much and the interceptions where just too much. I do find it hysterical when you poke the bear and watch them throw their tantrums in the comments section though Joe. It’s like my morning coffee.

  3. JAG Says:

Joe the haters are going to love this article. According to them all Of those numbers Winston put up had nothing to do with Mike.

  4. Steven007 Says:

Evans made manziel a first round draft pick. And he made JW… Whatever he’s become.

  5. SufferingSince76 Says:

Embrace the future (however short it may be) or forever be lost in the past.

  6. Youngbucs Says:

This is going to be Evans best season.

  7. Will Says:

This is the guy I’ve been wondering about and wanting to hear from. I can appreciate and respect what he’s saying.

  8. David Says:

    BradyBunch and Jag….

LoL. Exactly. Haters are going to hate and shift blame – ALWAYS.

  9. SteelStudBuc Says:

Remember Evan’s rookie season with McCown and Glennon at QB?
    12 TDs son

  10. SB Says:

    Nice one Steven007!

  11. David Says:

Some are probably starting to think I didn’t like Jameis, furthest from the truth. I am with Mike Evans. I wanted him back but… They had a chance to get Brady for a couple seasons, still playing at an extremely high level. Do that and move forward with a young quarterback underneath him next year.

Godwin and Evans both helped Jameis a lot last year Because they both have a large catch radius and can block out defenders.
Now they’re going to have a quarterback who is extremely accurate. That will benefit them but I don’t expect their numbers to go up.
Between them, a couple tight ends, a running back outlet, Watson or the rookie at slot, Brady is going to spread the wealth.
This offense has a chance to be one of the all-time great‘s, regardless of running back.
Lack of practice before the season starts really sucks bad!!!
It might take the line some time to gel and Brady a little time to chill with his receivers

  12. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

Evans said Brady throws a soft ball…..by 3 psi 😉

  13. Knuckle Sandwich Delivery Service Says:

Jameis didn’t have to go. Jameis could have signed on here as a backup at the same salary he’s making in NO. He’s got no problem on the bench learning from Brees, he could have done the same here with Brady. Jameis made the choice to move on with his 30 mil demand. He never would have taken the same contract he got from NO with the Bucs for some reason. We could have a good 1 and 2. Greed and ego makes you do dumb sh!t.

As for Evans, he knows what’s up.

  14. SB Says:

    @knuckle
JW decided to take a back up job to learn from ‘one of the best

You are indicating that if he were smart he would have taken a back up job to learn from “THE BEST’

Tells me either he isn’t smart or wasn’t welcome here anymore.

  15. Tye Says:

Nothing like good times to help people forget the bad…
Looks like the Bucs best days are ahead of them!

  16. BigHog Says:

Nope, nope, nope….where is it stated that the BUCS organization wanted Mr. 5,000 back in the building ….it may have been a condition of GOAT THE GREAT WHITE HOPE that FAMOUS not be resigned……I believe it was just Mr. Entertainment feeling he was just not wanted or it could have been upper management making a clean break from Jamie…nobody knows, but it will be different this season…will it work is the question!

  17. Anonymous Says:

@Joe, I know this might be hard for you, because negative people are just that. In the future can you just refer to Mr. Brady as GOAT or something postive?
Is it in the real of possibility? Joe is not negative. Joe already has referred to Brady in that way, and you don’t see what you don’t like on every post. The archives are there for you to view –Joe

  18. IMBUC Says:

Louis Murphy live in a frat house? Damn, man, can’t you afford some glassware after a few NFL season’s worth of pay checks? Solo cups at home? At least you classed it up by choosing blue over red?

  19. Pewter Power Says:

Josh Mccown got Vincent Jackson and mike Evans a 1000 yards in 2014 it didn’t mean sign him to a long term contract, all it got us is the number 1 overall pick. Evans streak I hope continues but I bet he’ll take wins Brady will bring over the yards Winston helped get him any day. Dude wants playoffs and knows his legacy is cemented in playoffs not regular season

  20. Youngbucs Says:

Evans is going to have his most yac ever.

  21. mark2001 Says:

Actually I think this article was very kind to Jameis, and says more about Mike than Jameis and his play. He would have been happy to play with Jameis for another year…But Brady is the GOAT…a game changer. Add that to Gronk? Wow…game changer. This just points out the intelligence of Mike and what a great teammate he is.

  22. ATrain Says:

    Love the word “Haters”

If you don’t love Jameis your a hater

He’s the best …. He is awesome

Umm He is making league Minimum Sooooo
Maybe you “Lovers” should be truthful

  23. Howard Cosell Says:

Joe! I’m sitting here sobbing my eyes out and my mascara is running all over because you had the gall to mention Americas QB Jameis Winston……here on a webpage!!! Does your evil know no bounds?

  24. Howard Cosell Says:

That said…there’s a very good chance that Winston COULD indeed succeed Brees in NO!

  25. Ivan The Insider Says:

    JOE –

Are you really going to continue with the “park-violating, home-invading” schtick everytime you write about Tom Brady?

As many other fans have already pointed out, it’s LAME. It’s not any sort of interesting, creative writing whatsoever.

It’s just adding unnecessary negatives to refer to Tom Brady, a QB we should all be very exciting about having after so many years of struggle.

I know it’s your site and you can write whatever you want, but I’d be willing to bet if you continue with this schtick for Brady you’ll be losing a lot of regular readers, myself included.

  26. Chris Says:

I think this will be Evans worst statistical season personally. Not because I think JW made him better, but because TB will be checking down a lot more and not forcing Evans the ball as much. I just can’t see him getting the same amount of targets this year like he has in the past. I hope he still gets 1,000 yards.

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I am just like Mike….in the respect that I would have been fine with Jameis returning…..but at a reasonable price….it was all about the market for me. And the alternatives were very unsettled & uncertain at the time.

He simply wasn’t worth big bucks…..not with the turnovers…

But….the decision was made and Brady was selected and I am excited about that. It brings relativity to the Bucs and the potential for great immediate success….
As a fan, you really can’t deny that. Sure, it’s short term but so was our last Championship…..they are very hard to come by so lets give it our best shot.

  28. BrianBucs Says:

Evans wanted Jameis because of their friendship.
However, professionally he knows Brady is a Godsend.
Evans is smart enough to know that Bucs couldn’t win with Winston and a change needed to be made.
I’m sure that Evans, just like everybody else on the team got tired of losing because of Winston’s continuous mistakes

  29. BigMacAttack Says:

I’m going out a limb here and predicting Jameis will put more cornerbacks in the Hall of Fame than receivers.

  30. Old Sombrero Kid Says:

Hate it or love it the Underdog’s on top… Right now we are paper champions like the backup Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback said back in 2002. We need to go out on the field and prove it. Go Bucs

  31. Alaska Abdominal Snowman Says:

Mike we all miss Jameis, you can tell by how he’s talked about every day. Even his detractors will miss raggin on him until they find their next scapegoat.
Can’t wait until this season and we can talk about THIS year and THIS team. It’s bad enough people are stuck in their houses, then we got to read the same commenters saying the same ish every day here.

  32. Youngbucs Says:

I’m surprised nobody’s said mike is clueless and doesn’t know football yet.

  33. SOEbuc Says:

I watch Brady 2018-19 highlights. We’re gonna tear it up the middle all year. Don’t tell me Brady’s arm and accuracy has fallen off in the past two years. Brady could end up getting +6,000 passing yards and lord knows how many TDs.

How are they not selling authentic Mike Evans men’s jerseys is very strange to me. I’d like a white.

  34. BigHog Says:

There were a lot of other reasons that the BUCS lost games last year that had nothing to do with Mr. 5,000….flages on the O/Line on great runs by ROJO…missed field goals…some bad play calling…bad execution by the offense!(running wrong patterns) …just bad team play…. BigMac you better grab hold to a rope or more jack-ax assumptions!!!

  35. Bigpaa43 Says:

I can’t wait to see what all you Bucs fans will have to say after the season.

  36. Big Stinky Says:

I for one am glad the JW3 experiment is over. Never thought we should have drafted him after just drafting Glennon 2 years earlier. Numbers PROVE they were ALMOST identical in numbers through their first 18 games. We were STILL rebuilding and could have used the extra picks we would have gotten for the #1 pick. God knows Jason Licht SUCKS at drafting players in the first place. Destiny was waiting for Jameis though!!!!! Pick 6 on his first pass as a Buccaneer and pick 6 on his last pass as a Buccaneer. Started his own 30/30 club and is the ONLY QB to throw 7 pick 6’s in a season in 100 years of football. Absolutely the WORST player to play the position since Trent Dilfer. Don’t know how he kept it together for the Ravens in 2000. Winston had me ready to stop watching football if he returned. I’m not kidding either!!! The excitement of watching football on Sunday is gone because of him and the Buccaneers franchise never ending belief in JW3. Tom Brady makes me want to watch again, especially with Gronk on the team too. They have chemistry already that can carry us early in the season while Brady gets his timing down with the WR’s. Just hope we can score over 30 a game because our CB’s are NOT very good. That’s 10 DB’s in the Draft in 5 years now and we STILL need a safety and a lock down corner against the other teams #1 receiver. Again, Licht SUCKS at drafting players!!! Always drafting players that were hurt in college and wondering why they are hurt in the NFL too. Did it AGAIN this year too!!! Kid missed 2 years and Licht drafts him in the 2nd round. Way to go MEATHEAD!!!! Just like giving up a 4th round pick to move up ONE spot to get a player that would have been there if you sat tight. Niners were taking Kinlaw regardless DUMBASS!!!! Anyway, the Glazers kept me from becoming a Nascar fan I guess. Guess I will have to watch for a couple more years now that Brady is here. Maybe we will get Aaron Rodgers next!!!!!!

  37. Buccos Says:

James has the 3rd worst percentage of converting potential game winning drives in the 4th quarter. He is 9-22 in such situations. He trails only Carson Wentz and Ryan Fitzpatrick among quarterbacks with atleast 10 opportunities. This is a very telling stat for a QB because it has nothing to do with your defense or your running game. It is all about the QB.

  38. Troll Says:

    Joe, I LOVE this article!

  39. Cainishere Says:

Jameis has had multiple people try and help him to be a better QB. Professional trainers, specialists and coaches have all tried to tame his vast talent but no one has cracked it. Winston’s accuracy has improved but is still dreadful for a 6th year vet. You see it was simple mathematics. A rookie QB would have made the same errors as this 6th year vet. Even without Brady Winston was doomed to be gone. Face it Winston just does not know how to WIN GAMES! Check Your Sheet

  40. TomTerrific Says:

    @Joe

Yiu must have zero gag reflex when it comes to Jamoist. Every chance you get it’s another reminder that in your world, the turnover machine would still be your first choice at QB. And yet, he’s a third string scrub on our biggest rival, just to pick his brain about our playbook. You have forfeited your right to be happy about any success in the post Uber grabber era. Please move to New Orleans.

  41. Buczilla Says:

Cool video, thanks. If old man Brady stays healthy and we get a proven running back, he is going to put up Tecmo Bowl numbers with this offense. Mike was loyal to Jameis and he should have been, since no one can question Jameis’s heart or passion. He also acknowledged what Brady is and what he’ll bring to the team. Class act.

  42. SOEbuc Says:

With Brady and a SB contender on paper and five prime time games we’re not going to be targeted with tons of flags. And people will realize our good plsayers. Greaseball Goodell would love to have Brady on the verge of retirement, he’ll make history at RayJay in 2021.

  43. Clean House Says:

Murphy was great at special teams if I remember correctly

  44. Hodad Says:

Tom Brady directing this offence is going to be an exciting thing. What I’m looking forward to is seeing what this defense does in year two together. If Tom has 12 picks on the season instead of 30 think how better off our defense will be. If our young secondary can take a leap, and Winfield solidifies the safety position we should create more turnovers. Brady usually makes teams pay when they turn it over. Brady’s effect on offense is obvious, what he’ll do for the defense is going to make the real difference this year.

  45. Oneilbucs Says:

Buccos how many times did this defense let him down through out his hold time here ?? A lot 5 times in 2017 4 times in 2018 and last year 4 times . So now Jamies is gone superbowl or bust no excuses …..

  46. Oneilbucs Says:

Big stinky if they bring in Rogers that will let all yall know they are trying to sale tickets . This is why this franchise suck and franchises like Pittsburgh , Green Bay , New Orleans , Baltimore , Denver , Seattle , Philadelphia will always be better than ours . Because there fan base holds the organization accountable while all yall care about is singing old players that haven’t done nothing for us . Like I said before I will believe it when I see it if this Brady thing works . The only thing is now who will be the next scapegoat because that’s all our fan base looks for . ….

  47. TOM EDRINGTON Says:

That makes one person who wanted Jameis back…………….

  48. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Joe, I believe you can STILL use the “America’s Quarterback” moniker. America’s Quarterback Tom Brady!!!

  49. Joe Says:

Joe, I believe you can STILL use the “America’s Quarterback” moniker. America’s Quarterback Tom Brady!!!

Joe can — and will — use whatever moniker he likes. Always have, always will. Joe knows he’s not everyone’s cup of tea. If folks don’t like something does, as the old saying goes, “Tough sh!tski.”

Guess what? Joe hates watching bad football. Still, Joe religiously watches the Bucs each week, year after year. Funny, huh?

  50. Bruno Says:

Mike Evans caugh all those passes and touchdowns from one Jameis Winston. And those pro bowls came on the arm of Winston, Chris Godwin breakout season came on the arm of Jameis, and Cameron Brate doesn’t get that big contract if Jameis is not throwing him the ball. The main problem in Tampa Bay during his playing days there, the defense always stunk and couldn’t stop my grandmother from scoring, and the kickers were always major chokers! New Orleans will win that division and his decision to sign there for less money is a wise decision. In two seasons he will leading the Saints and kicking the Bucs arse twice a year. Enjoy your 43 year old rental quarterback because it will not change the fate of the Bucs✌

  51. DBS Says:

Ok Bruno. Thanks for sharing. Now you can go back to your Saints fan site.

  52. diggler Says:

If the Glazer’s don’t do when they can to get 13 in in the HOF then fold the franchise. It will be the greatest failure of any franchise in the history of sports.

  53. Bradybru Says:

Bruno you should marry Ndog you both sound alike. Stop polluting this forum with the schizoid jay missy man. Stop living in the past and go to your new team. Gooooooooo Bucs

  54. D1 Says:

    Bruno,

Selling the future for a championship or securing a competitive team via a young franchise QB .

This is equation everyone is working from. (JBF to NDOG) acting as if it’s a legitimate premise distorts the conversation by providing false equivalents.

If we start by applying the same framework to both teams, instantly the premise you’re pushing falls apart.
(Ex, Tampa Bay is now in the QB rental business )
Let’s accept this as true. And it’s now true that New Orleans is in the QB rental business .

They have a 41 Yr starter who is 1 hit away from retirement this season and next season plans to retire.

I understand , 43 makes TB ancient. Brees is 41 and will retire next year. Brady wants to play 2 years but it’s Bradys age that’s an issue.

Seems both teams will be looking for another QB in 1 to 2 years.

If you believe winston is going to replace Brees , be the franchiise guy for the next 15yrs , then Brees is a rental and winston is the future. We’ve seen the future and decided it’s not much risk to let winston go.

Perhaps next year, we trade for taysom hill sign him to a 15yr contract. We now have a future and a another chip in the lobby. The mathematics of buying and selling works in this scenario. 3

Big Stinky’s stinking up the place with his stinkin thinkin!

  56. Cainishere Says:

Oh my goodness. Evans made every QB he has had look great. Take away the YAC and see what Jameis stats would be like. DREADFUL
