“Huge, Huge Advantage”

May 8th, 2020

Says disadvantage: Bucs.

Last night when the schedule was released, virtually the entire NFL global community raised their glasses and rejoiced that park-violating, home-invading Bucs quarterback Tom Brady and Drew Brees and the slimy Saints will square off to open the season.

This morning, the other side of the coin was flipped.

First it was Kyle Brandt of NFL Network (whose video curiously vanished from the internet just moments after it was published; Joe wonders whose feathers got ruffled on Park Avenue?) and then it was former Jets and Dolphins general manager Mike Tannebaum.

Now working for BSPN, Tannebaum took to Twitter to explain that the slimy Saints have a major leg up on the Bucs.

“On paper, seems like a great matchup,” Tannebaum said. “Drew Brees. Hall of Famer. Tom Brady. Hall of Famer.

“However, I think there is a huge, huge advantage for the New Orleans Saints. Because for years and years and years, Drew Brees has been with Sean Payton. And because with this unusual offseason, Tom Brady hasn’t been with Bruce Arians.”

While Joe isn’t about to doubt the lack of time Brady and Bucco Bruce Arians will have, it seems neither Brandt nor Tannebaum factored in that the slimy Saints are notoriously slow starters.

But look out once they have a couple of games under their belts.

You can see Tannebaum’s full take below.

    BINGO!!!!

further proof they only started paying attention to the bucs a few months ago…lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!

Not really worried about this issue at all. Our Super Bowl year we lost to the Saints week 1 and then picked up from there.

Actually hoping for a repeat, I will take that loss for a Super Bowl win. LOL

We had the defense hold the team up while the offense got it’s barring.

……….that ain’t the only thang “HUGE” around here!!!! (snickering) 🙂

  4. Dewey Selmon Says:

10 returning starters on defense that have played Brees before will have something to say about this.

  5. Dewey Selmon Says:

And I still think Payton will devise a small package for Winston.

  6. Will Says:

Joe love this site and the articles. You guys are good writers and do a great job keeping the fans informed. You don’t really need the little high school nicknames you tend to love to use but it’s your site and I’ll just continue to skip over them and enjoy the meat and potatoes of the article.
    Go Bucs!

  7. Ateonetree Says:

If Fitzpatrick could do what he did opening day two years ago against the saints Brady will have no problem against them

  8. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    @ Dewey Selmon

You are 100% correct good Sir!!!!!!

He knows how bad Jameis wants to play against the Bucs…….but the only way he sees the field if the saints are winning and it’s barely anytime left on the clock in the 4th Quarter

  9. Bangkok Buc Says:

    Dewey,

Sure hope it is one of those famous Jamous’ Pix 6’s. That would really throw us off 😉 Go Bucs!!!

“Notoriously slow starters” is a bunch of hogwash. It’s not hogwash when you’ve had the same coach and QB for 14 seasons.–Joe Every season is a new one and to expect carry over from last year, or as you’re stating, multiple years is fantasyland. First you would have to show a pattern and second you would have to explain the different circumstances and variables involved yada yada yada it’s a bunch of hogwash Joe.
I think it is definitely an unfair advantage but that’s why they get paid the big bucks, to figure this stuff out. While I understand the dynamic it doesn’t shift my expectations.

  11. Steven007 Says:

Will, I hear you. I have railed against those mind numbing, sophomoric (to be kind) nicknames and monikers since I’ve been coming here. It’s patronizing and dumbs down otherwise good articles. But it’s their “shtick”. But sometimes they do occasionally listen. They went from the insufferable “(advertisers don’t want you calling that” – with an embedded link to the same article) to “The Sickness” (which makes me envision a movie directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duval). This was a vast improvement.

JW WONT MAKE IT ON THE FIELD EVEN IF BREES IS HURT….. SEAN ISNT STUPID ….OUR DEFENSE WANTS TO PUNISH JAYMISS…. FOR ALL HIS STUPID GIVEAWAYS…..

  13. Phil Says:

The Saints won’t know what hit them. They don’t have any film on Tom Brady throwing to Mike Evans & Chris Godwin & Gronk. Good luck with that. We know exactly what Drew Brees is going to do.

  14. Coburn Says:

Can’t say I disagree here. They do have the advantage of continuity. We will se what reality is though

Slimy is to good for the Saints. I hope we beat their tired ass mercilessly! Their is a new sheriff in town!

So this is how you’re going to refer to Brady from now on? Why didn’t you give Winston an introduction like that instead of that America’s QB BS? There are a whole lot of names we could have given Crablegs.

  19. Joe Says:

Why didn’t you give Winston an introduction like that instead of that America’s QB BS?

Joe did… and does. Where have you been?

  20. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

I’ll bite Joe, not sure what you would consider a ‘start’ so I did the first four games and the first game of the last 14 years for the Saints.

Since 2006, the Saints are 28-28 in the first quarter of the season.

Since 2006, the Saints are 6-8 in season openers.

The last two season the Saints opened the season 3-1. Last year they won the opener and the other one, well we know what happened there.

    Now the Bucs:

Since 2006, the Bucs are 21-35 in the first quarter of the season.

Since 2006, the Bucs are 5-9 in season openers.

The last 3 years we are 2-2 in the first quarter.

What does it all mean? Well by your logic we are sitting pretty because the Saints are “notorious slow starters”.
By your logic, the Saints should be lickin their chops since we are even more notorious for being slow starters. That doesn’t even consider the team’s continuity this season.

So ether your argument is hogwash or your point about slow starts actually points to more trouble for the Bucs, not less.

    Cant argue FACTS.

  21. Hodad Says:

Winston might not even dress as the third QB if he can’t beat out Hill.

  22. Craig Says:

I think there was dissension between Brees and Payton last season. The Saints might not be on the same page to start the season.

The Bucs will be closer, because of Brady, the team will be in good shape. I don’t think anyone wants to be the first to let him down.

I would love to see Winston play. Payton will give him a nice little out throw and he will telegraph it so Davis can get a pick 6. Just like that Winston will be out of football.

  23. Joeypoppems Says:

Im expecting to trade road games with the Saints. We get them week 1 in NO, they get us week 9 at home.

  24. SOEbuc Says:

Joeypoppems… week 9 on a Sunday night. Nice.

Brady will have control of this team by week four at the latest. Game one at the Superdome is going to be loud.

  25. REDZONE BA Fan Says:

@Joe – Agree – Advantage BUCS – for first game, even on road. Given Payton’s great strategic mind, it is weird that every year Saints are so slow off the track-blocks. This year has potential to be different for Payton prep since Bucs have GOAT Tompa and Gronk; and NFC South Div winner will be either Saints or Bucs, and our head-to-head will matter greatly by end of year.

I am religious Sunday TV Bucs fan and do not care if fans-in-the stands. I make my own noise. Will be awesome to see this game as mental relief in this Covid situation.

    🙂

Anyone remember shortly after the stadium opened that some dude in Largo rigged up a cannon in his backyard and every time the Bucs scored a touchdown and also after a win, he’d fire off the cannon like the one in the north end zone?

It got to the point the neighbors complained so much the cops got involved and apparently his cannon was illegal so he had to knock it off.

Joe thought that was cool as hell, to have your own backyard cannon to fire off when the Bucs scored!

Yeah unless you’re a NY carpetbagger that lives next door. Buc fans are a rare breed even in their own backyard.

  28. Joe Says:

Yeah unless you’re a NY carpetbagger that lives next door.

Joe’s guessing it was either that or some old woman who doesn’t know the difference between a down marker and a goal post got her bingo cards all messed up from the cannon.

(Back when shuttle vans at the airport were a thing, Joe shared a van with a woman in her 50s or 60s who bought a house a block or two from the stadium a few years after it was built. She railed about the traffic on gamedays. 🤦‍♂️)

  29. Bucsfanman Says:

Hey, that’s why they play the games folks. Otherwise we could just skip opening week, take the loss, and move to a “winnable game” in the Panthers.
Say it with me…….16 and 0!

  30. OneBuc55 Says:

The Saints are in trouble imo…

We’ve played them tight for years without #12…Now we finally have a leader under center with a loaded offense…I liked Winston but Mr. Brady is a cold-blooded assassin on the field…He won’t self implode and hurt the team…If we protect him I don’t see us losing many games this year…

  31. lowercaseg Says:

    I love a good upset!

  32. Smashsquatch Says:

Less pressure on Bucs, more on Brees & Saints. They’re expected to win, will be favored, and have a built in advantage; meanwhile Bucs are the road underdogs. Perfect time to set the tone as new NFC South powerhouse. Love it!
