Eager To See Brady

May 22nd, 2020

Fortunes change fast.

Some of Joe’s readers may not know who Rob Higgins is. Trust Joe, this guy is a heavy hitter.

Higgins is the executive director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission. He is directly responsible for luring the nation’s top sports events to the Tampa Bay area including the Super Bowl, the college football championship, the ACC and SEC basketball championships, the Frozen Four, various rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament, the NHL All-Star Game, Wrestlemania and so much more.

In a clip of a podcast he hosts with WTSP news anchor Ryan Bass called the “Tampa Bay 55” podcast, Higgins also proves he’s good at one-liners.

Hosting Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht on the pod, Higgins joked that Licht should have fought the paparazzi this week to get a glimpse of the biggest catch of his career, park-violating, home-invading Bucs quarterback Tom Brady. Earlier this week, Brady, wearing a Bucs helmet and practice jersey, worked out with a handful of his new Bucs teammates at Berkeley Prep High School.

Even Licht chuckled that the practice was so secluded, in order to get photos of Brady, the paparazzi had to fight through tree branches.

Licht admitted he can’t wait to see Brady practicing with the full Bucs team on the practice fields behind One Buc Palace.

“It will be exciting to see him obviously,” Licht said. “But also to see how our entire team communicates and reacts and how they gel and the chemistry and the leadership. …

“I think [Brady] will extract the best out of everybody.”

Higgins wasn’t finished. Wrestlemania 36 was scheduled for Tampa this spring but was wiped out due to The Sickness and moved to the WWE’s training center in Orlando, where new Bucs tight end Rob Gronkowski won the title he holds. Higgins joked who would have thought the area would have lost Wrestlemania but gained its champion, Gronk.

Licht noted he has heard whispers Bucco Bruce Arians may challenge Gronk for his title.

“I might hide in the bushes for that,” Licht said. “Who would have thought a year and a half ago, Bruce would be our head coach and Tom Brady would be our quarterback and Gronk would be here and we would be doing a draft from home?

“I guess it goes to show the possibilities are endless. You never discount anything.”

Licht is right. If two years ago Joe wrote that Arians would have come out of retirement to coach the Bucs and the Bucs would sign Brady — much less the Belicheats letting him hit the open market — people would have tried to have Joe committed.

It’s a great time to be a Bucs fan, the only better time is when we won the Super Bowl. I’m not predicting that the Bucs will win another one this year, but excited for the season!

On paper our team looks solid if not phenomenal. There is not one major hole to fill, just a few spot where players need to step up – and those spots are held by young players with upside potential. We should go far into the post season.

Super Bowl or bust for sure. Just saw in a facts to know article how unmatched Brady’s playoff resume is. I think he brings a lot to the table with some talented offensive skill players surrounding him. Should be a fun year in Tampa

I did last time you mentioned it. Sick stats. I think 27 TDs and ZERO INTs. Good size, too. I’ll definitely be watching their box scores this season.
