Bucs Ranked Brady Ahead Of Brees

May 29th, 2020

Back in February, Joe chatted with Bucs quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen on Radio Row at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Fun times.

Christensen shared nuggets of being ordered to write up formal evaluations of Drew Brees and Tom Brady, among others, as the Bucs’ searched for a replacement at quarterback.

That was about three weeks before Brees avoided free agency and re-signed with New Orleans.

Listening to Bucs general manager Jason Licht on the Tampa Bay 55 podcast last week, he said Brady was the Bucs’ No. 1 pick when asked about the process to land Brady.

“It was a big sigh of relief because the buildup and just the angst of wondering if this was going to come to fruition; you know, since the end of the season when we started evaluating quarterbacks and he was the No. 1 option for us,” Licht said. “No. 1, we didn’t know if he was going to leave the Patriots and No. 2, if he did, if he would choose Tampa.”

Joe thinks it’s very cool that Bucco Bruce Arians and friends had Brady ranked No. 1 on their board with the possibility of Brees still being available. And now the duo will clash on opening day.

Per BSPN, the legends have another thing in common: only Brees was sacked or hit less than Tom Brady over the past two NFL seasons. The Bucs offensive line has a high bar to reach to give their new QB the environment in which he thrives.

I am still in shock that New England allowed Brady to walk.

  2. Youngbucs Says:

The Bucs offensive line was better than the pats last year. I’m not worried lot of false narratives out here. But the field doesn’t lie we shall see.

    so what

  4. SOEbuc Says:

    Chris

I’m still loving how Brady shoved it up Belicheat and Bob Kraft bunghole to not retire with the Pat’s. Especially if he can get us into the playoffs.

  5. ZZbuc Says:

    Chris and SOEbuc….
Two franchise with two diferent situations….Pats could do what they did, Belichik has the levarge and like it or not they are rebuilding, Bucs need things to happen right now, on paper they look great…..GM and Arians do not have the leverage and time…they need things to happen now……….
I am the ones that for the first time in several years that have an optimistic view of the situation…..the proof will be with us at the end of the year……..
I don´t see this talent all together with the Bucs uniform since the early 2000s…..

ZZBUC i’m with ya buddy, have not been this excited since they fired lovie dovie smith, dirk koetter and his happless and hopeless DC, won’t even mention his name, yep i say let’s get it on, bring it

“Who knows more Bellichick or our Jason Gump?

Older players do not slowly regress but instead production falls off the cliff

Of the past great QBs (ex Dan Marino) mobility/pocket awareness/leg injuries is by far the leading cause of demise of their playing career

Kobe has stated repeatedly that TB12 worst fit is with BA/BL offense

    Kobe Faker has posted

    And it shall be”

  8. SB Says:

Keep Brady’s Jersey clean and we are ALL GOOD!

  9. SB Says:

I mean, ME13 got a 1,000 yard season with Mike Glennon and Josh McCown throwing to him as a rook. Chemistry?
TB12 is gonna Eat that sh!t up!!!!!!!!

  10. Stanglassman Says:

Can you imagine if Jason said; We like Drew better than Tom but unfortunately the saints resigned him so we had to settle for Brady.

This is just like the interviews after the draft where they always get exactly who they wanted every time.

  11. TheBradyBunch Says:

Stanglass – yeah, exactly what I was thinking when I read this. It is always amazing that teams get every player they targeted in the draft! However, in this case I am sure the Glazers would have made damn sure that Arians and Licht targeted Brady. From a business standpoint it was a no brainer for a forgotten franchise to bring in the GOAT. Publicity and ticket sales would follow him and the Glazers are trying to make money with this franchise.

  12. geno711 Says:

Getting Brady, getting Suh, getting JPP – franchise on Barrett. Great off season. See no reason why Brady will not be a huge upgrade.

He was certainly my number 1 choice!

  13. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

    @SOEbuc
I am so glad Brady decided to shove it up Belichik’s arse, and come to Tampa.
IF we can protect him, Mike Evans is gonna think he died and went to heaven.
And, Brady has not had a receiver like him, since Randy Moss.
Mike Evans literally made Johnny Manziel, and IMHO, he also sort of made Jameis.
But both Jameis and Manziel were never known for their accuracy.
    But, Tom Brady sure is!

  14. TheBradyBunch Says:

I hate that narrative. Look Jameis is gone but stop acting like Jameis was holding these guys back. Evans was putting up hall of fame numbers with Jameis throwing to him. Winston has had a large part in his success. Godwin was a third round pick that is now a pro bowler while Jameis was throwing to him. Perriman was a colossal bust prior to last year and in the last few games Jameis helped him look like Jerry Rice and he got a big fat contract out of the Jets. Humphries and Brate were UFAs and they all got paid for putting up numbers while Jameis was throwing to him. Either this has been the greatest run of picking receivers or Jameis played a large part in their success. I will go with the latter.

  15. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Brady Bunch….it’s been a great run of picking receivers. Don’t give Jay Miss too much credit. He’s a 3rd stringer in NOLA if you want to follow his career. He might even dress for some games!

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

And while we’re giving JW props for ME’s success or CG’s success but no mention of the torture he inflicted on our defensive guys…tearing their guts out week after week after week with brain dead decisions…life sucking ints and fumbles and of course the freaking pick sixes.

He made a lot of DB’s look great as well as our WR’s!

  17. TheBradyBunch Says:

And StPete for 4.5 years of Jameis’ time here that defense utter sh$%! It goes both ways.

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“I hate that narrative. Look Jameis is gone but stop acting like Jameis was holding these guys back.”

I love Jameis as a player, and I would have taken him over Bridgewater, Rivers, and Mariota…simple because I believe he will one day be elite.

With that said, he certainly did cost this team wins last year. Much as I believe in him, those turnovers killed the season. They did the year before as well. It wasn’t all on him…kicking became an issue late in the season. And before that, kicking was horrible for entire seasons.

Moving on from Jameis was justified, even though I would have preferred to hold onto him.

Tom Brady is NOT washed up like some haters are saying. Numerous times over the past decade, New England fans suggested moving on from him because he had a ‘down year’, and he fed off that and returned to the Superbowl.

Even last year, his supposedly down year, he led the Pats to a good winning season.

Haters are haters, and they always find something negative to say no matter what side they are on. We can wish Winston success AND believe in Brady and the Bucs. I do.

My only real disappointments this off season are:

    • We didn’t draft or sign a young QB to train under Brady. I think that will bit us later.
    • We didn’t sign a serious competitor for Matt Gay. I personally think Gay will improve, but I’m a firm believer in having a backup guy to stash on the Practice Squad in case we need him.
    • I wish we could have kept Carl Nassib for depth.

  19. TheBradyBunch Says:

No need to waste a draft pick this year on a scrub QB. Next year if there is a good one available they definitely should take one. This year is all about winning and on paper this looks like a homerun of a draft. I love the first four picks and think the receiver out of MN might be another Godwin type of steal. I am very happy we got Brady and would have been disappointed with anyone else. I do think Jameis will eventually be elite and would have been fine if we had resigned him, but it is pretty damn cool to have the Bucs be one of the most talked about teams again. Bringing Gronk with him was just icing on the cake. Cant wait to see if this all translates into wins.

  20. Cainishere Says:

Does anyone remember seeing Brees looking like Dan Marino’s final season at the end of last season? I did. He looked very bad in his final game of the season. Tom is in a far better position for man heading strong towards 50 years old. That is one of the reasons he was ranked ahead of Brees. The Bucs Receiver corps will provide Brady with so much opportunity to perform awesome plays that is almost ridiculous. GO BUCS!!!!!

  21. SOEbuc Says:

    ZZbuc

All the Licht hater’s are off crying and sucking their thumbs in a deep dark cave right now. Jason is a good scout that “rebuilds threw the draft”.” Win now” like he’s sitting around with his thumb up his butt and not putting together multiple situations for two years down the road.

…But he never could put together a staff though till now. I’m hoping Todd or BL take over after BA to help keep good staff BA put together. Maybe even Christensen.

  22. Cainishere Says:

I believe Jason has done a decent job of team building and in contrast to our last GM Rich Mckay who’s player contracts put us in salary cap hell for years after our Superbowl run in 2002. The statement that the Glazers do not know how to win (the boys I mean) to me is not accurate. They have shown they do have what it takes to run a team properly. Personally the boys are coming on strong these days. Sure they paid Brady 60 MILLION after bonuses for two seasons but isn’t the world’s best football QB worth that kind of money? Why were we able to do that? Because of the excellent contracts Jason and the Glazers have set up allowing us to bring in both Brady and Gronk plus an astounding return of everyone that will be needed. Not many teams have accomplished that in an offseason when compared to what the Bucs have the past few seasons. The Glazers learned many lessons after 2002 and now the payoff. RESULTS? SUPERBOWL OR AT LEAST PLAYOFFS. GO BUCS!!!!

  23. Oneilbucs Says:

Jason Licht is trash bro this guy missed on a hold draft . The 2016 draft he missed on every pick . I can’t wait until the season starts . Man yall have lost yall mind behind Tom Brady who haven’t threw 1 pass for us . No one knows what’s going to happen with Brady or Jamies future in the NFL . BRADY IS 43 YEARS OLD AND BRADY HAS NOT LOOKED GOOD THE PAST 2 YEARS . I know yall will say he won the superbowl 2 years ago but we all know that Sony Mitchell carried the offense that year he threw 1 int in no touchdown in that superbowl even though they cheated the Chiefs with that roughing the passer . And looke what happened last year in the playoffs with a great defense without Sony Mitchell he looked bad and threw a pick six because the Titans knew they couldn’t run the ball . So be happy now but remember we don’t run the ball or either we can’t run the ball and we definitely don’t have a number 1 defense . No excuses …..

  24. mh1023 Says:

Brady will get the ball out on time to anyone available. So yes, the OL will only be better. And it will make any RB look good too when the D backs off.

  25. tbbucs3 Says:

“And StPete for 4.5 years of Jameis’ time here that defense utter sh$%! It goes both ways.”

Nobody wants to talk about the crap defense for the last 4.5 years because it doesnt fit the anti Winston narrative, especially St Pete. Wont hear a word about the dreadful pass defense from most Bucs fans.

  26. tbbucs3 Says:

“He made a lot of DB’s look great as well as our WR’s!”

Im sure 43 year old Brady would’ve done amazing work with……

    – Vernon Hargreaves
    – Johnathon Banks
    – Tim Jennings
    – Mike Jenkins
    – Sterling Moore
    – Brent Grimes

Do you think Brady would’ve given the defense a pass like most of you did for only playing good for 1/2 a season last year? Nope.

Because he doesnt come from a losing culture and understands that you need a quality defense to play well for a complete season in order to win. Wonder if Belichick wouldve been satisfied with the 2019 Bucs defense?……im gonna guess NO.

  27. Cainishere Says:

Sure you can go back and look at the 2016 draft and say Jason stinks at his job. Obviously you do not remember the terribad hole Rich McKay put us in to where we couldn’t afford a grocery bagger to play for us. Sure Jason struck out in some places but every single GM has done that bud, every single one. Even the best at it. Secondly. I do remember our crappy secondary but they don’t throw interceptions do they? when your QB goes out and throws a pick after chastising his team for not putting forth enough effort. I’ve gotta stop giving the ball to the other team.” Turnovers have plagued Winston throughout his five-year NFL career. His 109 turnovers is more than any other player in the league since 2015 — and 23 more than the next closest player, Philip Rivers. Then you go and blame the defense for that? get a life bud get a real life.

  28. Oneilbucs Says:

cainishere And Payton had more turnovers and Payton had 2 hall of fame runningbacks and with a team waaaaay better than ours but you will never hear no body bring up those facts …….

  29. Oneilbucs Says:

And by the way I don’t want to hear it was a different time . Because if you played in the NFL after the 70s and then you played in the Mel Blunt rules . Wich means you couldn’t grab or hold after 5 yards .

  30. Cainishere Says:

What if I told you that the QB in the end of the draft was selected for Brady what would you say? Also, Who cried when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Beat Those Rams in the Championship? I did I sobbed like a baby. I loved that team.
    GO BUCS!!!!

  31. Cainishere Says:

Oneilbucs The Colts are my second favorite team sir. Yes Dungy had a powerful team but that is because of Coach Dungy honestly. People gave their all for that man. Any team that had him as a coach was blessed. GO BUCS!!!
