“Man, Who’s Better?”

May 3rd, 2020

Kurt Warner speaks

Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner served up an important question for Bucs fans and NFL fans as he relaxed during an interview last week with 98.7 FM in Arizona.

Warner was analyzing the post-draft NFL and noted something Joe and all fans will hear plenty about when training camps kick off; the NFC seems a hell of a lot stronger than the AFC. Joe agrees. The NFL adding one additional playoff team per conference this season is an especially welcome move.

Warner looks at the NFC and can’t get that lingering question out of his mind.

“I think you look at the Bucs and you say, ‘Man, who’s better?'” Warner said. “You know, who has talent across the board or better in more areas than the Bucs? I think they’ve got a chance to really compete for this thing if they put it together quickly.”

It’s a good question. The Bucs are stone cold loaded on offense after scoring the third-most points in the NFL last year. And they could still add a running back upgrade.

Talent, however, isn’t everything. Every NFL season is filled with underachievers. The Bucs have landed in that category many times. And it sickens Joe to think about how the Saints finished six games better than the Bucs last year. That’s a lot of ground to make up.

On the “quickly” front, that’s probably the key to the season. Somehow the Bucs must find a way to break their seven-year streak of going 3-5 or worse in the first half of the season.

    “13 or more”! Why?! Because……….
    16-
    -Dash-
    -Zero

    That’s why!

  2. View from 132 Says:

8-8 or 9-7 and a very dangerous playoff team. I think the first half will be tough with limited prep.

  3. Bucsfanman Says:

View- You could literally argue that we were 3 plays away from being 10-6 last year. Consider too that ALL teams face the same prep issues.
Say it with me View! 16-DASH-0!

  4. BucDan Says:

I really believe that having Brady greatly reduces our TOs and leads to scores on our side of the ball. This means less short fields for the opposing team and the Bucs playing ahead and not from behind.

I feel like that is worth an extra four wins (at the least), which is why I went for 11 on the poll.

    Go Bucs!

  5. SteveK Says:

Bucs go 11-0 and win the super bowl in a potentially shortened season. I’d be thrilled with that. 😁

  6. Alanbucsfan Says:

    49ers 2018 4-12
    49ers 2019 13-3

If healthy, Bucs will go 12-4

  7. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

The fan in me so wants to buy into the hype, but it seems like every year there’s a perennial doormat team that becomes the media darling of the sports talking heads, and every year that team seems to crap the bed. Last year it was the Browns, but the most memorable example was the “Dream Team” Eagles squad. I certainly this team to win 9 or 10, but I have this nagging feeling that with so many new players, and with the Kung Flu causing so much disruption, this could easily be a disappointing 7 or 8 win season. However 2020 ends up record wise I still applaud the franchise for putting all its chips on the table for a one or two year ‘win now or blow it up!” window. At least it gives us fans the feeling that ownership is as sick of mediocrity as we are.

  8. Byrd Says:

I said 12 wins 4 loss could be saints chiefs and 2 games during season we don’t play well against a playoff team. Name your 7 playoff teams in NFC….

    Saints
    Bucs
    49ers
    Cowboys
    GB
    Seahawks
    Eagles??

  9. Buc1987 Says:

    10

  10. Youngbucs Says:

  11. TheBradyBunch Says:

View, gtfo! If the Bucs had a real field goal kicker they were at least a 9 win team last year. So you think with Brady, Gronk, Wirfs, Winfield and JPP for the entire season they are worse than last year??? I mean everyone blames Jameis as the reason for all of our losses, but Gay missed a chip shot in the Giants game and all three makeable attempts in the Falcons game. I am not even including the 50 yarder he misses and the end of the Seattle game and the blown call by the refs in the Titans game. If these team goes 8-8 the coach and GM should be fired as soon as the season ends. You have to be a casual fan if you really think the team is taking a step backward after the offseason moves they have made.

  12. Kobe Faker Says:

“The key to 2020 is BA and his adopted son Polk county community college Bryon Leftwich

The weakness is Bradys mobility and durability

will the offense and scheme be pro TB12? the ball must be out quickly to keep the pass rush honest and have the old Goat standing

Yes, he threw deep to Randy Moss but he always had the Wes Welker, Edelman, Deion Branch, Troy Brown, Amendola, David Patton, Davin Givens, Kevin Faulk, James White, Danny Woodhead, Shane Vareen, Dion Lewis

Adam Hump was that type of player which Tom Brady wanted last year in NE

Chris Godwin does not have the body type and not that player

    Who Dat player?”

    Kobe Faker

  13. Dapostman Says:

    10 and 6.

    Should make the playoffs.

No playoffs bye bye Licht, Arians, Leftwich Bowles and all the other coaches.

  14. Architek Says:

Great story thanks for the post!!!!!

  15. 2002WasALongTimeAgo Says:

The paper ran an article on the season giving credit to JW for either wins or losses. They felt he was responsible for 6 of the losses. So, we should be much better. Gay has competition now, too.

  16. Pewter Power Says:

Offensive weapons will improve and have been good for a while, win total will depend on the defense, this is how Brees top 5 offense took the leap from multiple 7-9 seasons it was when they drafted and upgraded their defense

  17. bucnjim Says:

I said 10-6 and that is a little conservative. Also not only will there be an ENTIRE NFL Season there will be an entire college football season, Golf, NBA, even MLB and NHL are planning their seasons. By the end of May most states will have lifted ALL social distancing rules. The media will be infatuated with the upcoming election and just like the H1N1 we will hear very little of this over hyped virus again. I had previously estimated May 1st so I was 5 days off on my first prediction.

  18. oxycondoms Says:

What kind of money do the bucs have left for an rb upgrade. Freeman still seemed decent last year albeit injury prone.

  19. Swampbuc Says:

Every time Buc fandom gets all hyped up (after 2010, after 2012, after 2016), the team craps the bed and the neighborhood. Don’t buy it, Bucfans. The Glazers still own the team and its not Malcolm.

  20. MarineBucsFan Says:

    @Joe,

I understand the Saints finished six games better than us last year, but there is no ground to make up here. We all start the season 0-0!!

  21. AJ Says:

6 game difference is kinda of misleading. As they play two head to head games, which the Bucs lost. So that is a 4 game swing to the Aints. A play here or there in either of those games and the delta isn’t so much. NO will be tough as always. But Bucs usually play them well.

  22. Adrnagy Says:

We will be lucky to get 10 wins. With our secondary and kicker, punter .

    In the other hand.
Sean Payton fixed Brees. Teddy. And now Winston on the list.
Following year after this one jaboo will get a starting job and 100M contract while we keep dreaming about 14,13,16 wins lol.

  23. Youngbucs Says:

Brees fixed the saints sorry nut hugger stop lying

  24. Adrnagy Says:

We should’ve taken Jordan love in the first.
    Second Pick Akers
Trade up spit and snagged josh jones
    Smh ….

  25. Adrnagy Says:

So you think after Brees sting with the chargers he went to the saints and fixed that organization Lol lol.

  26. Adrnagy Says:

I’m better off nesting after seeing the dumbest posts. I can’t believe how many kids drank toilet water growing up.

  27. Pryda...Sec147 Says:

This team should easily win 8 games I think if we want more we going to have to play smart football not beat ourselves up above all we need to stay relatively healthy especially Oline/Dline

  28. Youngbucs Says:

Brees had an injury concern he was all ready good 🛑

  29. Youngbucs Says:

Y’all always trying to compare him to these greats lol. But he’s missing that all important thing called a 🧠.

  30. Youngbucs Says:

I’m telling you the saints wouldn’t be spit without Drew

  31. El Buco Realisto Says:

    7 wins!!!!!!!!!!

Injuries and not the soft schedule we all saw in 2019 will be to big of an obstacle!!!!!!!!! After two games gronk will be exposed of not able to play in the nfl anymore!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. Youngbucs Says:

I honestly see us sweeping the falcons and panthers

  33. Bucsfan951 Says:

I was between 10-11 wins and I went with 10… I’ve been burned by our Bucs team too much in the past!

  34. kyle Says:

have to agree with ^ view from 132. this whole virus nonsense is killing our off season program. I would think we might struggle on offense for a month or so, similar to the superbowl team, gruden’s first year. with the expanded wildcard, if we can get to 9 wins and be playing our best football the last quarter of the season, the bucs are going to be a handful!!

  35. Godlovesbucs Says:

If this were a normal off-season I would have said 12. 11 seems fitting due to the chemistry that needs to build. This years schedule also seems tough, but if the harder games are later that would help a ton.

  36. Matt Says:

I said 11 with the roster as it is currently. If we add another savy pass rusher and another lineman for depth I’ll say 12. Yes, totally agree that this virus crap will definitely hurt our offense the first month or so. People will say Tom Brady is washed up early on then around game 4 or 5 we will start clicking and that playaction game will be LETHAL!!!

  37. JP09 Says:

If we got to 7 wins with terrible QB play, a suspect D for the first half of the year and a inconsistent kicker at best, I believe 11 wins is possible this season

  38. Mike Evans Goat Says:

Just cutting the turnovers in half wins us 3-4 more games. The only games we lost and Jameis played well and had 0 interceptions in were Seattle and NO. Even if Tom throws 15 interceptions we are gonna win 10 games lol.

  39. Mike Evans Goat Says:

Tom didn’t throw 2 picks in the same game at all last year. Jameis threw 2 or more picks in NINE games last year. And he threw 3 or more in FIVE games………….

  40. Defense Rules Says:

Any pick for the number of wins is strictly subjective (OK, emotional) at this point in the season. Bucs have a hard schedule this year IMO: Falcons twice; Saints twice; Panthers twice, as always. Then the Bears, Broncos, Lions, Giants & Raiders away, plus Packers, Vikings, Chiefs, Chargers & Rams here.

Packers, Vikings & Chiefs as well as our division games will all be ball-busters. There’s 9 games right there that’ll be dogfights. And of the other games, several of those teams have made some pretty good upgrades this year already.

I’m thinking that to ONLY lose 5-7 games (necessary to have a winning season) would be pretty good. IOW someplace between 11-5 and 9-7 on the season. Will that be good enough to make the playoffs? Who knows? Kinda depends on how the OTHER NFC teams do.

  41. Rod Munch Says:

Gay lost us 2 games all by himself — and the refs totally F’d us in Tennessee – that’s 10-6. I had Winston taking us to 11-5 this year – so I’d certainly expect Brady to do that as well, with Brady giving the team a boost in the playoffs.

  42. 541BucsFan Says:

One loss. Last reg season game. Sitting starters.

  43. Buczilla Says:

10 wins for me until we get at least ONE running back that is a proven, consistent threat to defenses. It’s both sad and pitiful that we continue to neglect the running back position even when we are attempting a super bowl run.

You would think that the front office would have learned a lesson with Jameis. Stop wishing and hoping that Rojo fullfils his potential. Have a solid backup plan if he does not. Sign Devonta Freeman Licht and stop f’ing around. If Rojo finally blossoms, then that is icing on the cake!

  44. Etzel Says:

This team has 9-7 written all over it

  45. Youngbucs Says:

They like to say the defense was bad lol. Week d played great run gm was clicking wonder why we lost 🤔🤔🤔🤔missed kicks nope 🤔🤔🤔🤔this guy sabotage our season in week 1 bye bye bum.

  46. TheBradyBunch Says:

Rod, we were a 9-7 team minimum and more like 10 because of kickers and bad referees and guys like Etzel are predicting 9 wins. Jesus Christ these fans have low expectations. Like you, I think with Jameis they would go 11-5 next year. If bringing in Gronk and Brady equate to no more wins then last year (yes the kicker cost them two wins) then what the hell did we do all of this for.

  47. Youngbucs Says:

Start the season already the field will speak the truth!!!

  48. Youngbucs Says:

The field doesn’t lie that’s why Winstons more than likely gonna be a journeyman.

  49. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

    19-0.

  50. Rayjay1122 Says:

Good thing all32 teams have an abnormal, off season. So it cancels each other out. Brady will sneak in time with his weapons. No doubt abour that. This time we won’t know about his shenanigans.

  52. JimmyJack Says:

Dude did Kobe Faker just say we would be better off with Hump because This can’t hang with Brady at QB………Bro as a poster you are entertaining but good darn you some stupid thoughts ratting through that tin can of yours.

Dumbest take since the last time NDog said something.

  53. JimmyJack Says:

    Chris can’t hang with Brady***

  54. Jean Lafitte Says:

Making the playoffs should be our main focus and to get there you are almost guaranteed with 11 wins or better. Tom will string wins together to get us to 11, and we’ll have returned to post season play after almost a century and half. I’m so excited for the first time since 2 years ago I thought Jameis was finally gonna get us there. I want to start tomorrow!

    Go Bucs!

  55. Rod Munch Says:

TheBradyBunch – I think they get off to a slow start, with Winston I don’t think they would have been an issue. I do think at playoff time Brady, if healthy, will be a difference maker. But if the Bucs make a deep playoff run it will be hard to argue with the move. We shall see.

  56. White Tiger Says:

Nice to see expectations sky high! It is hard to believe that in the space of a few months, our fortunes have changed SO much that now, anything less than 10 wins will be unacceptable.. amazing!?

  57. Buc4evr Says:

The Bucs are loaded with talent however with the current situation hampering off season workouts and meetings, I think the Bucs are going to be at a big disadvantage this season. With a new QB learning the plays and the rookies that make the rooster, I’m thinking 9 or 10 wins.

  58. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Gee.. I wonder how we can make those games up?? Hhhhmmmmm??? Could it be not turning the ball over 40 times… Naaaa that can’t be it cause Winston was balln remember!? … Yeah I’m not sure?? It’s an enigma wrapped in a mystery!!!!
