The Bucs Get A Running Back

April 24th, 2020

Bucs RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn.

Can an SEC running back save the Bucs? Peyton Barber didn’t.

But the Bucs are hoping a third-round draft pick from Vanderbilt does. That would be Ke’Shawn Vaughn.

Vaughn is the No. 14 back in the draft per Dane Brugler of The Athletic.

SUMMARY: A two-year starter at Vanderbilt, Vaughn was the feature back in former offensive coordinator Gerry Gdowski’s scheme. He became the third player in school history with multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons, ranking No. 5 on the school’s all-time rushing list (2,272). Vaughn is a speedy, run-to-daylight ball carrier with the active play style that helps create missed tackles. While he is fairly reliable as a pass catcher and blocker, he might not have the decision-making qualities required to be a dependable every-down back vs. NFL defenses. Overall, Vaughn gets in trouble when he passes up singles looking for extra-base hits, but he accelerates well while shifting gears to catch defenders off balance, projecting as a capable third-down option with potential to be more.

You can watch his highlights below.

Rojo clone??? Or am I waaaaay off???

  2. Anonymous Says:

    Who???? No clue

  3. NYbucsfan Says:

Jason can’t draft to save his life.

  4. Anonymous Says:

Should have took Moss the florida kid from Utah.

  5. Buccaneerscotty Says:

    I like it!

  6. alaskabuc Says:

I swear we just tried a running back for 3 years that ran right up the middle without picking up his head.

  7. Zero_bucs_given Says:

Rojo is more a 1-2 down back

  8. CPN Says:

I’m content with this pick. Vaughn has some upsides to him.

  9. IrishTony Says:

Bad pick jesus I hope they address RB in FA.

  10. EA Says:

Welcome to Tampa Bay muscle hamster 2.0.

  11. Kalind Says:

This is a miss. Too bad.

  12. LongSeason Says:

Hmmm. Didn’t see this one coming. This pick insures Ronald Jones is our starter.

  13. Guzzie Says:

Hes a beast, he played at Vanderbilt and still put up good production very happy

  14. BucAllNight Says:

    Draft unfolding nice…

    DT, G/C, WR, QB

    Super Bowl Bound!!!

  15. Rod Munch Says:

Everyone whines and screams about how we have to take a RB, then we take a RB, and everyone whines and screams…

I will agree with the 2nd part, we didn’t need a RB in the draft.

I read up on guys before the draft and out of the 3rd tier guys I thought this guy was probably the best choice, but I’m not sure we were down to picking 3rd tier guys at this point.

Anywho, you guys got your RB. I said we didn’t need one, you did, so like it and stop complaining.

  16. Dirks Great Granpappy Says:

    Definitely would have preferred Moss

  17. Bucsfan77 Says:

He’s a north to south runner, with the new OT, Gronk, and O.J. blocking opening holes it should be a good pick.

  18. HeavyE Says:

    We need a GM!!! WTF????

  19. Leighroy Says:

Any Gator fan knows that Vaughn was among the (very) few standout guys from Vandy who actually raised your blood pressure during what otherwise should have been a cupcake game. Vandy was always overmatched but he found a way to stand out. Excited to see what this kid can do with some real talent around him!

  20. Calibucfan Says:

Would have rathered kinlaw in 1st
    Rb in second
Trade 3 and 4 for Josh jones in 3rd or maybe
    He falls to us

  21. C-Rock Says:

Bruce Arians drafted David Johnson in the 3rd. This is not Jason’s pick.

  22. Tom S. Says:

Ugh. One moment Licht and Co actually take a player over need in Rd 2 then go right back to using the Draft to reach for need as if there is no other way to fill a specific position. Reminds me of the Charles Sims selection. You know the one where Licht took a transfer redshirt senior RB over two long term starting guards include 5x Pro Bowler in Trai Turner

  23. BUC CHEEKS Says:

We could’ve had Dobbins and taken numerous safeties here! Ugh, F it… we got Brady GRONK and wirfs… Winfield should be good but damn… I just don’t know if we did the right thing

  24. Guzzie Says:

    Kareem Hunt 2.0

  25. 407Buc Says:

    No Utah kid???

  26. SMDH Says:

Ugh… what is it with Licht and picking RB’s? Rojo better have a breakout year this year!

  27. Wesley Says:

Still gotta sign a free agent back.

  28. tbbucs3 Says:

Welcome to the 30 INT club Brady!!

  29. Anonymous Says:

Heard the jags called the Bucs to trade fournette

  30. Bucfan Says:

    WTF…..This is crazy…..draft is a F so far…

  31. Buczilla Says:

Too little too late. We needed one of the top 5 running backs this year in a bad way. From everything that I have read on this kid, he is nothing special. Hopefully I’m wrong, but I think that a mentally challenged orangutan could have made better second day picks than Licht.

  32. Jimmy Says:

I hope we find a way to trade OJ for Fournette. RB is a glaring weakness and this guy isn’t going to fix it.

  33. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Rojo 2.0 would be just fine with me…….for all you down on Rojo…..his 4.2 yards per carry last year would total 1008 yards with just 15 carries per game….

We just didn’t hand him the ball…….

The question is….did we improve on Barber….probably….

  34. BigZ Says:

Hes not a beast. Vanda doesn’t produce beasts. The beasts were taken in round 1 and 2. This guy is a 3rd down back. Better off trading for fournette on a one year deal. JW is laughing. Sorry TB, JW had no running game.

  35. Plex Says:

His highlights are trash. He get tackled by the first man on most of the highlughts. This has bust written all over it.

  36. Bucsfan77 Says:

For all the people that is complaining about the draft. … look at it in this perspective, off season we resign 95% of the defense, got Brady, Gronk, and a beast OT, anything else is just sprinkles on the cake.

  37. Casual Observer Says:

He put up some good numbers at a weak football school. The scouts saw something most fans probably didn’t. Deserves a chance. Might be a steal – especially for third down work. Plus – a trade/FA is always possible yet.

  38. DBS Says:

Oh look who is not happy. SURPRISE!!!!

  39. donuts Says:

He played well v LSU, which has NFL level talent on DEF. His effort at the goal line was superb.

  40. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

MEATHEAD trying to be cute. Zack Moss was there! Zack Moss can be elite. This no name from VANDERBILT?? He would have been there in the 5th!!! MEATHEAD!!!!

  41. Dewey Selmon Says:

We need a north/south runner, we will have leads this year without our QB throwing the other team back into the game. we will be running out the clock.

  42. Al121976 Says:

He may be a little slow but he seems like a pretty smart runner, time will tell on this pick

  43. Jason Mclaurin Says:

I’m not mad about this one but I do feel we should’ve went DT here. Leki Fotu would really complete our defensive line and would allow Vea to play DE which he has proven he can play. I would love to trade back into the fourth and grab Fotu. Guy has serious game

  44. Pewter Power Says:

Dude told you he doesn’t believe in using premium picks on running backs and you didn’t believe him. projecting as a capable third-down option, what else did you expect? It was Dare who needed to be replaced not Rojo. It’s a passing league right, they already have a 2nd round pick. I’m honestly hoping Rojo was seeking out help with pass pro, can’t miss blocks with Brady under center. With all the runs he had called back thanks to smith and Dotson he would have probably been a 1000 yard rusher

  45. jb Says:

    Detroit robbed us.

  46. Architek Says:

    Better get a FA!

  47. Buccaneerscotty Says:

Y’all including joe suck and are the biggest crybaby people in the world!!!

  48. TOM Says:

Who? Never heard of him. Passed on Moss. WTF Licht you would FU a wet dream. I was so upbeat after yesterday & now I’m as down as can be. Loser Licht always tries & be cute & reach for a RB rated as low as 14 when Moss was sitting there. OMG Licht has to go. What a waste.

  49. Bucsfan77 Says:

Jason I agree, I’d rather prefer them drafting a DE, but not upset at this pick

  50. IrishTony Says:

Ok Bruce why in the name of God did you allow JL make the pick at RB? You were involved in the OL pick, Bowles make the Winfield pick (which I was ok with) and then Mr. Thicky (bad rb evaluator) make the 3rd round pick? Who’s left out there in FA? Nobody. This is your running back stable? So I’m assuming that Ogunbuwale is your pass catching back? Brady are you ok with this nonsense?

  51. swolesome Says:

Like Leighroy said. Vaughn made us Gators squirm in our seats. I think this was a good pick for us.

  52. tbbucs3 Says:

No running game again. Time to sign a FA back ASAP.

    His film screams average.

  53. Rod Munch Says:

There’s another highlight video that is 9:11 minutes long – check that one out, it’s much much better made than this one and Vaughn looks much more impressive.

Watch this and speeding through it, I don’t know about the basic north/south stuff – I see some good jukes in here, and he flows in and out of traffic pretty well. He’s not a stop and guy go, or a shifty guy, but runs with good speed.

This other highlight makes me feel a lot better about the pick – I can see what they see in him, in particular in his freshman season. The Vanderbilt highlights are mostly him running through big holes, and anyone can do that, but some of the early ones at Illinois, he’s needing to do more, and he does.

But the basic north/south stuff, I’m not buying it watching more of his stuff. I don’t like the pick when so many FA RB’s are available, or you could trade for Fournette and get him for basically nothing, but this pick might turn out just fine.

  54. Hamsadwitchtime Says:

@ rod… need and still need top tier RB not Payton Barber 2. This was terrible pick! Camp meat!!should have moved and taken Taylor or Akers in 2nd. Hell we could have grabbed Eason here and got this clown in the 6th. Joke!!!!!

  55. m0j0 Says:

Kinda reminds me of a cross between Doug Martin and Peyton Barber. A north south guy who runs hard and can catch the ball if needed.

  56. Inspired Says:

I haven’t read the comments yet BUT WHO IN THE #@&$ IS THIS GUY¿ Never heard of him. Don’t we NEED a “PASS CATCHING” all purpose back? I’m confused but I’m going to try to be patient and get a little more educated on this guy Before I pop a fuse. What did the commentators say? “Sufficient” pass catcher?!?… Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

My first instinct is to throw up…. BUT I’m practicing Patience. First…..

I general I’ve been a touch more than satisfied with our picks. So I’m going to try some Yogurt. I mean, Yoga. And meditation. Ok, how does it go…. O yeah noises, Umm…. Derr…. Umm….Duh….
Seriously, I’m going to go and Just…

  57. Inspired Says:

    Was Moss still around?

  58. Guzzie Says:

He ran a 4.51, got a 3 down toolset, he played on the weakest SEC team, and still was productive, STEAL

  59. JA Says:

To all that hate the pick, I love the pick!
To all that love the pick, I hate the pick!

  60. Dano Says:

Bucs had Zack Moss available & they get this guy. I feel sick.

  61. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

    MEATHEAD TRASH

  62. TBXTBucs Says:

Saw a report Jags called us to trade Leonard and we chose to draft Vaugh instead yea not a fan of that pick we get one person year this is the one!

  63. CharlieV Says:

i agree with Architec Says.. ywan ..
plenty more to say but who cares.

yeaaaaaa!!!!!! i got that mf’er mosquito!!!!! sorry real life gets in the way once again.

  64. Inspired Says:

    Gotta give him a chance…. 👍

  65. tbbucs3 Says:

Its just so obvious when you compare Cam Akers tape vs Keshawn Vaughn’s side by side Akers is so much better. Odd pick Licht.

  66. Bucsfan951 Says:

This is one of those picks where in about 2-3 years, we’ll look back and see that a pro bowler was drafted just 3 picks behind this dude lol

But for real, Licht has gotten at least 3 starters in the first 4 rounds. That’s what they needed! Good job, Licht! I’m happy!!!

  67. AwShbucs Says:

Guzzle are you joking? This kids game is not even remotely similar to Kareem Hunt…

  68. Guzzie Says:

Kamara and Hunt ran a 4.56, no one thought they’d be stars, both 3rd rounders, promise hes gonna be a stud

  69. TheBradyBunch Says:

I agree Rod. Hamsadwitch definitely has seen the video we have. Looks very impressive for a 3rd down RB. Do you guys think that Arians and Licht don’t know who Moss is??? They know more than all these posters bashing this pick.

  70. Guzzie Says:

Guess we’ll find out who’s wrong, I’m stoked love Vaugh

  71. SOEbuc Says:

    Rod Munch

“veryone whines and screams about how we have to take a RB, then we take a RB, and everyone whines and screams…”

Lol. I know right. He can catch the ball and pass block. Did you people not see him drag that entire LSU defense for a TD and then busted out another long one? WTF? Knew they wouldn’t have Rojo on the bench all year. I’m excited to see how he produces.

  72. TheBradyBunch Says:

    has not

  73. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

Can’t fault Licht for passing on Moss. Seems like other GM’s are too, so maybe there’s something behind the scenes (medical issue perhaps) there? I thought they’d wait until day 3 to draft a RB, but I’m good with the Buc’s draft so far.

  74. CharlieV Says:

Maybe Eric Metcalf’s clone Antonio Gibson from Memphis if he’s there in the 5th?

  75. SOEbuc Says:

    Rod Munch

“veryone whines and screams about how we have to take a RB, then we take a RB, and everyone whines and screams…”

…but, but he wasn’t on Mel Kiper’s top pick list??? Burn in hell Licht!!! lol

  76. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

On your way to the Skyway, please everyone consider this.
    1. The Bucs obtained a terrific OT and S in the first two rounds;
    2. Zach Moss racked up big numbers against average PAC-12 competition. He did have flashes but totally disappeared in the bowl game against Texas
    3. Vaughn, racked up big numbers on an average team in the SEC, playing teams that were most likely better than Vandy and playing from behind.
    4. Vaughn catches the ball. Brady can squeeze every once of ability from a player like this. Remain calm folks.

  77. Doctor Stroud Says:

I liked the highlight against LSU.

  78. Pewter Power Says:

The couch gm’s that did all the background work ups on all draft prospects are coming to this website to show disgust for this pick in all their infinite wisdom and knowledge from decades of scouting🙄🙄🙄🙄

Expect Rojo to be a better runner with improved run blocking

  79. SOEbuc Says:

“Did you people not see him drag that entire LSU defense for a TD and then busted out another long one? WTF?”

He picked up 130 yards and two TD on 20 carries in that LSU game, also.

  80. Inspired Says:

After watching his highlight real I’ve come out of it feeling better.

    ~ Workhorse
    ~ Tenacious
~ Bounces off defenders pretty well And DOES NOT go down on first contact….
~ Best of all for me, With my “not a professional evaluator of talent eye” IS a Better than Average pass catcher..

So Maybe it is a good pic.. Steal?? The jury is still out on that…

  81. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I like this pick. Moss would’ve been nice but this guy should pair well with RoJo. If he can do it in the SEC at Vandy then that tells you he has talent. He can also catch so I think he could have value for sure.

Licht got us 2 starters with our 1st 2 picks and a good 3rd down back that has potential. I personally like RoJo if they would just give him some more carries. Which he should get more since we have a reliable QB managing the game.

  82. Al da pewter King Says:

I’ve read comments for weeks on how we need a running back. We finally take one and all the know it alls want to write him off before he plays one down. There are players like this that end up having good careers. Chill out people!

  83. ncbucsfan Says:

    https://youtu.be/yQKhfwFq4Nw

He has good hands!!! I like this pick now.

  84. adam from ny Says:

    this pick is…

    JAG

we coulda and shoulda done better at picking a back

    #PoorMansDougMartin

  85. ChanEpic Says:

Based on those highlights. Not impressed

  86. ©MadMax Says:

Small but stocky speedy guy….doesnt waste time finding holes, no dancing around. Its a 3rd rounder…..

Yes I wouldve preferred Moss but maybe they saw something negative with him that I didnt…wonderlic maybe?

  87. Brandon Says:

Terrible analysis. This dude is straight line with decent speed and slightly above average power. He’s nothing special but he’s definitely not a jitter bug like he was described.

  88. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

The main reason we got this guy is that he was the best pass-blocking RB left on the board and he’s also a serviceable all-around RB it looks like to me… But definitely not flashy

I hobestly think Rojo is going to be a Superstar, starting this year…

  89. Erik Hesson - Fine Artist - City of St Pete Says:

*honestly…. I’m predicting 1200-1500yds for Rojo this year.

  90. FairMinded Says:

Guess we really believe in RoJo because Vaughn doesn’t look particularly special. Probably could have gotten him much later…

  91. PanthersSuck! Says:

Smooth runner. Reminds me a little of Cadillac Williams.

  92. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

Brady need s a RB that can catch & we just got one… Last year when we picked SMB everyone freaked out & he seems to be a good pick…

  93. Bucsfanman Says:

Looks like he has the tools to be a decent back. Not a “name” guy, but appears solid.
I have no issue with this pick.

  94. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

    Looks fragile

  95. Buc-it Says:

Zack Moss is going to make the Bucs regret this one. I cannot believe they passed on him.. I watched him play a lot at Utah. He is going to be a star.

  96. Jeffbuc Says:

You guys crying saying we could have got moss. Do you just see a name or a ranking. The dude ran a 4.65 his draft profile says he has a fumbling issue. And he doesn’t have the elusiveness or speed for the nfl speed. And his violent running style won’t hold up versus nfl guys.

  97. SAP Says:

It furiates me that we didn’t do whatever we needed to trade up & get Swift from Georgia

Brady is big on throwing to RB’s out of the backfield, and as of right now we don’t have anyone who can fill that role.

We haven’t been aggressive in moving up for big players since we traded up to get Derrick Brooks in the first round.

Jason Licht still clueless and should have been down the road with Winston.
