Perfect Setup

April 24th, 2020

Example for Bucs rookie.

Browsing through the interwebs this morning, Joe was trying to find out who is Tristan Wirfs.

The Bucs’ first-round draft pick last night, Wirfs brings unreal skills to the Bucs as the projected new starting right tackle.

Joe has read so many stories about Wirfs but it sounds like the guy is too good to be true. Joe cannot find any real ding about the guy. He is a superior athlete. Maybe the best offensive lineman ever to play for a program rich in developing offensive lineman. Great character. Super nice guy.

Well, the latter just might be his only flaw.

Chad Leistikow of the Des Moines Register notes the main crack in Wirfs’ armor that could hold him back from being a top-flight offensive lineman is the guy is too damn nice.

One of the most common things we heard from Iowa coaches during his time here was that he needed to become meaner, in terms of finishing blocks. Wirfs is a giant puppy dog in a large man’s body, and although that quality is endearing to those around him, it did hold him back in terms of becoming a dominant run blocker at Iowa. He was overpowering at times as a junior.

Well, the Bucs have a guy on the roster who could help change that.

The Bucs have a center who is a good guy off the field but an ornery SOB on the field, Ryan Jensen. In fact, Jensen sort of has a rap for being, well, for pushing the envelope on the field. Let’s just leave it at that.

Joe hopes Bucs coaches tell Wirfs, “You see that red-haired center? He’s a dirty, er mean mofo. Do what he does and you will be fine.”

Joe suspects after a couple of cheap shots by one of the slimy Saints, Wirfs will be OK.

Mr. Jensen, for the time being, you have a new little brother. Teach him the ways of the world. And it isn’t Mount Vernon, Iowa, where they leave their doors unlocked at night and buy everyone in the Legion hall a beer when you first walk in.

Ah the Geral McCoy of O-linemen.

One of the main reasons I wanted Suh over GMC. GMC was a bigger threat against the pass but he was so damn soft! And I felt that made the whole D-line soft. Suh, like Jensen, are mean as hell in the field and that carries across the whole team.

    I could be imagining this…

a center/guard today would be nice

Get that kid to bunker up with jensen! I think we go RB and QB tonight!

Sounds a little like 76. I’m sure this kid loves his mom. Somebody needs to tell him some yo momma jokes before the snap so he can go all water bottles on them!

Just had a thought…with the Packers drafting Jordan Love, it is entirely possible that Rogers could leave the Packers in 1-2 years. Right when Brady leaves us.

  7. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Know what? I’m totally cool with Wirfs picking up the DE of the opposing team off the ground after he pancakes his arse, lol…
Time after time after time, haha.

  8. SOEbuc Says:

I’m not looking for more personal foul calls like Jensen does Joe.

  9. Larry Says:

Running back and a stud safety and we are good to go. Build for positional/developmental depth after that.

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

A concern I have this year: Injuries. Without a physical camp, conditioning will not be nearly as good.

  11. passthebuc Says:

Ray Nitschke was a puppy dog off the field.

  12. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Yeah Bonzai true. Everyone is going to have that problem so we are on an even playing field.

People forget how good McCoy was while consistently not having any help

Man Saints/Bucs both setting up to have dominant O-lines.

I read the Panthers liked Simmons a lot but felt his talents may be wasted if he didn’t go to an established talented team. Basically they are admitting rebuilding and know they are a few years away and need to build with the trenches.

The Falcons pick seems like one of the biggest reaches per the draft experts.

  15. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

I believe Wirfs will be just fine playing next to Cappa then Jensen – as neither one of those dudes takes any sh1t from anyone.

JBF already putting a target on this kids back lol

  17. SOEbuc Says:

No more PF, but I’m wondering how much dead lift weight this oline can put together. Of course OL are strong, but Smith, Marpet, Jensen, Cappa, now Whirfs. These are some bad dude’s in the weight room. One more plus.

Can you please explain why and refresh those who “forgot” how “good” McCoy was? I’m very interested to suddenly remember why he was so “good”

  19. TampaBay AllDay Says:

Umm…i guess 6x probowler and 3x all pro means nothing these days. Doing it on some of the worst coached bucs teams and rosters

Yo !!! Joes… has Scotty Miller put on any man weight?

  21. TampaBay AllDay Says:

Like I said he was good. Definitely not trash

Six pro bowls was a bit much for my standards because GMC had a big name. And you are totally right. We haven’t had one HC resigned after four years (IF THAT!) since Gruden. Jameis worked his tail off and was the first in the door and last to leave. I really wish Arians drafted him and not the rest of these schmuck coaching squads we’ve had over the last decade.

pass…Nitschke was a great guy. Years back, I took my family to a Packer tail gate party, my wife being a Packer fan. Nitschke was signing autographs. My daughter and I were in line to get her an autograph, and the guy in front of us asked to try on his SB ring. Of course, he said, forget it. My daughter approached for an autograph..she was about 9, and he asked her if she would like to try on his SB ring. She did and of course thanked him while returning it. What a great guy.

What surprised me was how big boned his hands were… not long fingered…but just heavy boned. No wonder he could give a licking to RB’s and keep on ticking.

You don’t win a state wrestling championship in IOWA by being a puppy dog. It’s you against your opponent each match. It takes a lot of grit.

    i agree…

sean isnt going to let the o-line get weak on his watch….at least not with drew behind center….

dont want to face d.brown twice a year but drafting wirfs made it a little better….

aj terrell is decent but yeah, the falcons reached….they probably thought cj henderson was going to fall and felt pressured to get a CB…

would like to see DT R2….raewkon davis or the kid from tamu….gotta get suh’s replacement today….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  27. Iamabuc Says:

Tristan…please do not become a McCoy…we need you to be nasty…

  28. Old Time Buc Says:

I happen to think he was the best player available and we went and got him! Congrats TW and welcome to TB.

    Not to worry.
