Jeremiah: Bucs Are Calling Around

April 17th, 2020

Drops inside knowledge.

So it seems it is not just a tall tale that the Bucs are interested in moving up in the draft.

Former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah, now a draft analyst for NFL Network, did a conference call yesterday to discuss the draft. There, Jeremiah was asked how likely it may be for the Bucs to trade up to draft an offensive tackle.

Earlier this week Albert Breer of SI.com wrote that he had heard through his many front office contacts the Bucs wanted to trade up to draft one of the Big Four tackles and were not so sure one would be left when Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht is on the clock at No. 14.

Jeremiah, who Joe knows is tight with several NFL general managers, said he is fully aware the Bucs are trying to trade up.

“Well, I know it’s normal during this time of year to call a bunch of teams, so I don’t want to maybe [make] too much of it. But I know Tampa has already made phone calls to inquire what it would cost to move up, so I would not be surprised at all if they tried to move up.

“And I keep coming back to kind of that Jacksonville area [at No. 9]. If you wanted a tackle, that’s the partner because you’d get ahead of Cleveland who’s a tackle team and the Jets who are a tackle team. That would not shock me at all if Tampa moved up there to get their choice of who’s left at that point in time. That would not shock me.”

This also adds sizzle to the rumor dropped by Michael Lombardi on his podcast “GM Shuffle.” Lombardi, after making a national radio appearance last weekend saying tight end O.J. Howard would blow up playing with Tom Brady, was tipped off by a league source to back off the Howard hype because the Bucs are shopping Howard.

Could it be, rather than give up valuable draft capital to jump up five spots (if the Bucs are trading with Jacksonville), that the Bucs are trying to sweeten the pot for a trade by dangling Howard?

This is all very interesting to Joe.

    Makes perfect sense.
If Bucs want one of the, say, top two of those tackles, he probably won’t be there at 14.
However, maybe the Bucs have their eye on another player at a different position. (Hope Not)

  2. ElBajito43 Says:

Maybe Trash Licht is going to trade up to draft to draft Grant Delpit #5 overall

  3. Joe in Michigan Says:

From the draft trade value chart I was looking at, the 9th pick has a 1350 value, Bucs 14th is 1100, a difference of 250. If we traded Howard to New England for two 3rd Round picks (they have three 3rd Rounders this year), that would be a value of 263 we could send to Jax…It doesn’t sound worth it, to me. I’d be okay with trading Howard if the right deal came along, he didn’t look too enthused to play football last year.

  4. CPN Says:

Trade up to grab an OT makes sense.

Maybe be crazy and get a safety?

Trading up for anything else is dumb.

  5. Sport Says:

Last years performance by Howard created doubts. The guy looks stiff as hell and looks like he developed a case of Manos De Piedra, great for a boxer, bad for a pass catching TE.

    In BA I Trust!

  6. Caleb Lee Says:

New England already had interest in OJ..

So if Gronk does end up wanting to play with Tom again then I would think we just end up trading away OJ for Gronk plus a draft pick.

We’re obviously in it to win it now. So it only makes sense to do the due diligence and see what it would take to move up and get the guy they believe will have the most impact.

I, for one, am excited to see to see how we navigate the waters on this big treasure hunt. Will we find our prized hidden gem? Or end up with fools gold?

  7. Cometowin2 Says:

I hate that we are giving up on Howard. His biggest issue last year is that BA’s system does not feature the TEs and he did screw up on a large number of his limited attempts. I’m sure with Tom Brady, his productivity would radically improve. Love me some Cam Brate but would rather see him traded if needed. Bigger salary, has had some back problems and older.

    Go Bucs!!!

  8. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Ain’t buying it. Jacksonville is putting out smoke to increase the value of the #9 pick. I just don’t see 4 OT going in the top 13. There’s ALWAYS first round shockers that go way too high which should push an OT our way.

Don’t do it man, don’t do it.

  9. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Is 6 weeks in moderation normal?

  10. ©MadMax Says:

I saw a mock that had all the teams individually listed….Wills went at #9. If he’s there, yes def at #9. It’ll probably cost more than just OJ though…Maybe our two 4ths? We need to keep our 2nd and 3rd.

    I need that 2nd and 3rd Mr. Licht 🙂

  11. Jean Lafitte Says:

Since we’re speculating and reading between multiple lines maybe there could be some credence to the rumors of a Gronkowski return?

  12. DoooshLaRue Says:

I thought delusional Nuthuggers got 8 weeks in the cooler🤣

  13. '79 Defense Says:

Alaskan, only 6 weeks? Try over three years. And still not sure why.

  14. ElBajito43 Says:

Hey as long as NDOG isn’t here I’m good or Lamarcus

  15. ©MadMax Says:

What I see going top 13…

    4 QB’s, 2 OT’s, 1 DE, 2 DT’s, 1 LB, 3 WR

Unless Wills is there at #11, I think we can be patient. We all know trade ups for QB and WR are always out there every draft….even then, Wills still might make it to us since RT is his only position.

  16. ©MadMax Says:

But if Simmons is still there at #9….whew buddy, look out!

  17. adam from ny Says:

you don’t trade howard until the trade deadline…

you give him the opp to work with brady and see if things pan out…

if brate is brady’s complete favorite, and say tanner hudson is gaining steam in the offense, you send oj packing, as he at that point has bust tattooed across his forehead

  18. adam from ny Says:

    these are all smoke screens…

you keep your potential star tight ends, as that is brady’s bread and butter…

you at least see how things go for a minute…

unless the bucs know something about howard that others don’t

  19. Buccan8 Says:

Smoke screen or not, it has enough legs to let it run.

Bucs at the deadline last season couldn’t get a 2nd for OJ. Jax should jump at getting OJ plus our #14 right now. And doing so gives us leverage on Thurs.

If we are at #9 and two QBs, Simmons, Okudah, and Young are off the board (as expected), that leaves at least one of the following for you at #9:
OT of choice, either Tua or Herbert, the top WR, or your favorite interior DLman.

I would listen to any call after pick #8 is made, just to see what someone would give up to have those kinds of options with that pick. Someone will give up at least a 3rd to get Brown or Jeudy/Lamb and probably a 2nd to get Herbert if he’s still there at 9. And if no OTs are off the board yet, you may have a chance to move back just one or two slots, bag that 2nd or 3rd, and STILL get who you wanted (a la SF with Solomon Thomas).

If you can get YOUR guy AND an extra pick like that, you win. Getting a third rounder, half a disappointing season later than you were offered originally is taking advantage of the market at a time when your trade partner only has 10 min. to convince you.

  20. Joeypoppems Says:

I said yesterday that I would rather see Howard traded for a pick instead of being traded in a package deal to move up. However, if they were able to use Howard to move up without giving up a 2020 draft pick as well I think I would be cool with it.

14 + Howard + 2nd round pick in 2021? Maybe that gets it done

  21. Buc believer Says:

@Alaskan… it is if you dared insult one of the Joes or one of his favorite contributors who appears hear at least 3 times a week and is a co-host with a famous ex Buc. I have been in moderation for 3 months plus now. Hell this contribution will be monitored and I wonder if it will even make the page.

  22. Go Bucs 72 Says:

The Moving the Chains podcast is the best daily football podcast there is IMO. DJ & Bucky both being former players and scouts give great insight into both jobs. They explain things technically then give you real life examples of what they are talking about. It’s very informative.

  24. Jason Says:

If we do trade up it will be to take Max Duffy from Kentucky. Because Jason Licht.

  25. Frank Pillow Says:

Auburn’s D. Brown has the makings of the kind of man-beast DL this team could use, particularly with Suh on a one year rental. As much as moving up for an OT is a sensible argument, if we’re going to be paying a premium to get there, it makes just as much sense to do it for the premier DL in the draft.

  26. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

While I’m certainly not saying we don’t have a need at OL, I’ll be surprised if the Bucs trade up for a RT. Developing rookie O-lineman seems to take time, Arians ain’t getting younger, and with the highly uncertain amount of practice that teams will get this offseason to work out plays it seems like the better move might be to sign one (or two) O-linemen that get cut from rosters and draft a guy(s) later (maybe round 3 or later?) to develop (or throw in as starters if injuries hit)?

    BINGO!!!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  28. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

I would be fine moving up if all it cost was OJ but why stop at #9. If the Bucs are moving up, OT is not the target. Any team that wants an OT like the Giants at #4, the Chargers at #6, or even the Cardinals at #8 would be interested.

They would surmise correctly that the Bucs were moving up for Isaiah Simmons or Derek Brown and they would be guaranteed a top 4 OT at #14. Maybe even a choice between Wirfs and Thomas.

Imagine the Chargers trading back to #14 and still picking Herbert or Love. Genius!

  29. TOM Says:

Like I’ve said before if the so called top 4 OT are gone I would take Jones at 14. Still believe he should be in the conversation with the top 4. Who knows he could turn out to be the best of the bunch. Crap shoot. Nobody knows for sure. Also double up on OT in 2nd rd or Dobbins if available.

  30. SirClicksAlot Says:

Moving up for an OT to play RT would be crazy. It’s not worth it! The drop off from the top 4 to the next 3 is not that big, especially if you are only looking for someone to be your second best tackle. I hope this is all just smokescreen. I know Licht is rumored about trading up almost every year. He could just be trying to gauge what his pick is worth to other teams in order to estimate trading down. I really hope that’s the case and we don’t go all in for a position we can fill in the 2nd.

  31. Buczilla Says:

If all we need to do is give Howard to Jacksonville to move up to 9, then I am fine with it. No, hell no, to giving up a single draft pick to trade up in the first round. Teams are routinely fleeced by trading up in the first round. There are a few happy endings (Julio Jones for instance), but they are too few and far between for my taste. Stick and pick Licht! We need all the talent that we can get.

  32. DaMayan Says:

Every year Licht tells us in his draft press conferences that he calls every team pre-draft and makes tentative trade plans for every pick. This really isn’t anything new or different.

But on the other hand it seems very likely from the outside that they would try to get a top OT and should be willing to trade up for it.
