Jason Licht Talks Tom Brady Homework, “Refreshing Change” & More About The Brady Phone Call

April 10th, 2020

“Yes, Tommy. As you can see on film, we need you and a running game and to burn the film of our pre-Thanksgiving defense.”

Hearing general manager Jason Licht speak today on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio was rather enlightening.

Of course, Joe was listening and already has written up some of Licht’s comments (see the home page).

Very intriguing were Licht’s words on how Tom Brady was selling what he can bring to the Bucs on a very detailed level — because Brady had put in a lot of film work on the roster.

“I’m not that saying Tom was begging us to take him by any means, but Tom is a very, very smart guy,” Licht told host Adam Schein. “I’ve been around him for several years when I was with New England. He does his homework like no other. I put him in that category with Peyton Manning and those types of guys that take their craft very seriously. And he had done his homework. And when we were on the phone with him, he was rattling off all the players we had, all the different games that we played in that were close that came down to one play, or a whistle here, a dropped ball here. He had studied our entire team, our entire season. So he was more telling us how he can contribute to turn this thing around and make this a successful championship caliber team.”

Licht noted how even before Brady was signed his phone was blowing up with free agent calls compared to prior offseasons.

“We were very optimistic that this would be a place where quarterbacks would want to come, and that was the case,” Licht said. “We had a lot of calls. We had a lot of interest in that first week in the [free agency] negotiation period, especially.

“It was a refreshing change this year from past years, where this was a place where everybody wanted to come.”

The credit for the surge in free agency interest, per Licht, was all about Bucco Bruce Arians “changing the culture last year.”

Man, what fun it would be to hear Brady breaking down the 2019 Bucs. Joe would pay to hear that.

Keep changing that culture Bruce even if some don’t like it.

Go for the trenches in the 1st

  6. Ndog Says:

How did the culture change again? Lead the league in penalities, horrible kicking, no running game and yeah none of those things have anything to do with the QB.

  7. Ndog Says:

Oh yeah now we have liars and backstabbers running the team that how it changed my bad.

  8. Youngbucs Says:

Oh you talking now how is there no plan for the future again??????
How exactly did the mortgage the future do tell ????

  9. Youngbucs Says:

Your wanna b hof QB is the liar and backstabber keeping the organization in the dark for how long about you know what?????????
Go ahead and give me a watered down stupid response to that.
Or better yet act like you can’t see this post as usual

  10. Youngbucs Says:

And they still gave him the benefit of the doubt. Pick up 5 yr and all gtfoh

  11. Youngbucs Says:

If there are holes on this team and QB was 1 of them.
But you want a upgrade at every position but QB gtfoh.
I’m getting tired of this pity party

  12. Ndog Says:

No QB, no future period. If you can’t see that you can’t helped.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs had a total of 1,086 offensive plays last season, plus some ‘non-plays’ that add into making total offensive snaps taken. Here’s what the starting beasts in the trenches had:

    1 – LT Donovan Smith … 1,056 off snaps; plus 77 S/Ts snaps
    2 – LG Ali Marpet … 1,140 off snaps; plus 87 S/Ts snaps
    3 – C Ryan Jensen … 1,138 off snaps; plus 0 S/Ts snaps
    4 – RG Alex Cappa … 869 off snaps; plus 34 S/Ts snaps
    5 – RT Demar Dotson … 1,044 off snaps; plus 0 S/Ts snaps

Now compare that to what our RBs had:

    1 – Peyton Barber … 339 off snaps; plus 0 S/Ts snaps
    2 – Ronald Jones … 415 off snaps; plus 6 S/Ts snaps
    3 – Dare Ogunbowale … 361 off snaps; plus 318 S/Ts snaps
    4 – TJ Logan … 23 off snaps; plus 205 S/Ts snaps

So any RT we draft can expect to be on the field THREE TIMES as much as any RB we draft. BUILD THE TRENCHES FIRST (in Rnd 1), then grab a quality RB (in Rnd 2). A RT may not score as many TDs, but he’ll certainly influence the game (run-blocking AND pass protection) a whole bunch.

  14. Youngbucs Says:

Ndog that’s all u got I thought u talk facts

  15. Ndog Says:

Defense Rules nailed it and if they do it, it will be the first Olinemen drafted in the first round by the Bucs since Davin Joseph in 2006. Yep that sure is setting a QB up for success.

  16. Youngbucs Says:

We have a QB that at age 43 is better than the previous QB

  17. ncbucsfan Says:

    1st: DL Javon Kinlaw
2nd: Safety Kyle Dugger or Edge Bradley Anae
    3rd: OT Robert Hunt
    4th: RB Zack Moss
    4th: WR Van Jefferson

  18. Youngbucs Says:

But forget about let’s talk about who has been backstabbed I knew u would respond to that. But you sit up here and call them backstabbed. If so he had it coming seeing how as he was the 1st person backstabbing have a nice day🥱

  19. Ndog Says:

I can be looked at as we got weaker at two spots for the future. The QB we won’t have in two years AND the draft pick we use the draft some bum QB in the 3rd round that is not going to be a good Safety, WR or running back. People forget all of these choices have long term ramifications but when your coach and GM don’t care about long term this is what happens.

  20. Ndog Says:

Playing for now only means throwing away your future. Remember that, this the Miami Marlins so they better hope it works like it did for them, but then again football is not baseball.

Good morning sleeping beauty. Did you sleep well? JW is gone. You gotta calm down man. There’s a new sheriff in town. He’s got more rings than the rest of the team combined. You’ll be able to walk out of that stadium in a good mood for a change. You can’t have enjoyed these last few years always having visiting fans chanting on the way out. Now you’ll get your moneys worth. You won man. Stop crying.

  26. Adrnagy Says:

I really like the safety and return specialist from Cal with the 3 rd pick- Ashtyn Davis.

Send 2nd to jaguars for yannick

1st – trade down or take best available player.

    4th – Ben Bartch
    4th – John Hightower

Interested than suddenly everyone believes ROJO is a beast. So no RB in draft.

  27. Adrnagy Says:

    I’m your huckleberry

  28. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Knuckle Sandwich – have been enjoying your posts – good stuff man.

NDog – I believe you are on stage 3 of grieving. Acceptance is the last.

  29. Penny2shaq Says:

I think the “backstabbing” he was referring to was bruce arians trashing jameis in the press and behind the scenes at the combine. The bucs wanted to kill his market value, knowing that if brady fell through they could retain JW on the cheap. The problem was brady only had 2 choices, came to tampa after everyone else had signed, and jameis was left out in the cold because he wanted to return to the Bucs and was waiting on tom to make up his mind. The fault is just as easily placed on Jameis for not exploring his options day 1, and im sure most of you haters will bash him for his loyalty. The other problem is that the ole biscuit risker has a golden reputation in this fraternity, and no matter what he says to backtrack on trashing jameis, coaches have the mindset that he’s unfixable because arians couldn’t do it year 1. So yeah, i personally have a problem with bruce… because he’s using this fabricated “straight shooter” rep and people are eating up his bs. And jameis is definitely suffering because of it.

    NDOG

I’m no longer responding to you because I truly feel sorry for you. Get help!

But I will correct your CLUELESS statements!

“I can be looked at as we got weaker at two spots for the future. The QB we won’t have in two years”

FOUR of the Playoff QB’s this year were 24 or younger…2-3 years of experience.

1/3…33% of the PLAYOFF QB’S were kids…recent draft picks. 1/3 of anything means it’s not rare. I’m not even including the guys like Mayfield who still have the jury out on their careers.

You’ve been hanging with Mike Johnson too long. Your LOVE for JW has blinded you to reality and made you incredibly negative.

“Hope is a terrible things..unless it actually comes to fruition.”

How absurd it that? Hope is looking forward…actually coming to fruition is the past!!! DUH!!

  32. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Why do people after all this time think Winston is a sure fire hall of famer.

People think this is like letting Andrew Luck, Russel Wilson or Manning go when all we did was cut ties with a unemployed headcase of a turnover machine.

Go look into the stuff he did at FSU. It’s some sh!t.

JW is suffering because of how he plays football. Period.

It doesn’t matter what BA said after the season. Any good coach or FO man doesn’t need BA to tell them JW is broken. Film don’t lie.

BA’s the coach, TB’s the QB. That’s what matters here in Tampa now.

  36. geno711 Says:

Ndog will never truly be a Bucs fan. He roots for Jameis Winston even after he is off the team and roots against others on our team, including the coach. He acts like Jameis was the answer for the next two years for the Bucs. How ridiculous. Everyone else knows that Brady for the next two years is better than Winston for the next two years. We also see that Brady in the end cost us less than franchising Winston which was something Ndog suggested. He does not want to give Brady or the rest of the team any chance this year.

Ndog will NEVER be a true Buc fan.

  37. Adrnagy Says:

  41. Anonymous Says:

Get lost forever NDog you are the only one that is washed up, bucs are better without JW

  42. ©MadMax Says:

Ndog, the Pats wanted Brady….even went on record saying so. They just wanted to gamble and wait on him to come to them so BB could get him for about 20mill. They gambled and lost. Obviously we wanted Brady and he wanted us and the Pats were left going to the Prom without a date. You dont treat GOATS like some cheap backup date that’ll beg you for whatever morsel you’re willing to spare. This is another reason Brady will be playing with a chip on his shoulder…..and frankly I cant wait to witness it. Fun times!!

  43. Bird Says:

    Madmax

Kraft came out in news and said they were willing to offer 30 mil a year
Just another non factual statement by Ndog

Look around everywhere …brady was ready to leave before last season

  44. JimmyJack Says:

NDog is a pathetic dirt bag fan who values his own opinion over the betterment of the team. Like always he brings nothing but a rotten opinion to the table with no facts.

You can say no future muchambo but educated Bucs fans see wins on the horizon. There’s your future and there’s your culture change. Winning is contagious so come see me in five years when we are still winning with Bruce’s & Brady’s predecessor.

Bucs fans that have a clue also realize players like JPP and Suh aren’t wanting to sign back here to play for the same QB who can’t get out of his own way. On and off the field. Nor will Evans Chris or Shaq tolerate it much longer before they decide to take their services elsewhere. It takes a real life moron to not understand that bringing back Winston is the true gamble for the future of this franchise.

  45. Bucsfan951 Says:

For some fans, it’s super bowl or bust. That’s fine. What ever floats your boat, I guess.

For me, I just want to see improvement. If that’s with a 43 yr old qb, then so be it! I just want to win! I’m tired of the season being done by Halloween.

But if you’re expecting one of these “super bowl or bust” dudes to admit they were wrong if the Bucs actually make the playoffs, it just won’t happen. They will come with lame excuse on why the Bucs made the playoffs. I mean, it’s not even fun to argue with them like it used to be. It was fun to argue with them at first but we’re on week 3-4(?) of jw being gone and they still can’t get over it. It’s actually quite sad. It seems like the majority of them would rather see the Bucs fail so they can tell you “I told you so!”

Obviously, they said the same thing about the “Winston haters” I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️

  46. Steven007 Says:

951, that’s a good point and one I’ve been making throughout the threads since it happened. I can see it at first if you are a huge JW fan. After that, digest it, and if you’re an actual fan be happy. I simply don’t understand the mindset or mentality of those like Mister dog.

  47. JimmyJack Says:

951……Good post. And I agree it’s not fun to argue with these people no more(don’t even know if I can call them fans). But when their new schtick is taken to trashing our front office I won’t stand for it……..Just like I won’t stand for when they attacked fellow Buc fans only for being critical.

None of their attacks are deserved or warranted. And you are right. Their whole purpose is rooted in their desire to be right. That’s why I call them people and not fans. It’s pretty obvisous they are more fans of their own opinions above the team.

They expose themselfs as phonys. Posing as fans of the team when their true rooting interest is being proven right. They are fakes and must be exposed as the liars they are.

  48. SteveK Says:

2019 was the year of the turnover. They were ugly, plentiful, and the overall culprit for our loosing ways.

  49. SteveK Says:

Tom Brady is the man, and we are damn lucky to have him as our QB. This is a great time to be a Buc fan. No need to sit around and watch some slapdick prospect turn it over relentlessly.

  50. SteveK Says:

Not an FSU fan, but I wish they were better so some of the Jameis Honks could move on from the 2015 glory days of ACC football.

  51. LaMarcus Says:

I’m upset with the treatment of Jw. I’m mean just say we are moving on from the beginning like most pros. We should do business right and keep karma on our side. I mean I get it but how thats gonna be with the rest of the players 🤔

Jw should of stayed and I’m sticking to it. If Brady was 35-39 never mind but 43 come on and JW is better right now. Brady is world best but not right now. We looking for leadership says it all. Then CV? No time for reps?

The Bucs can make everything up with me IF John Taylor is there and we pick him or that Bechton guy.

  52. JimmyJack Says:

Lamarcus……Do you care to elaborate on this “bad treatment” of Winston? Because I hear a few of y’all say that and never once have anything to back it up.

It sounds to me like y’all are peddling that Jamie’s 1of1 clown who is the only one I have heard pushing that narritive………And let’s be honest, that dude is clearly biased based on his name. Not to mention he also made a few other claims that we’re proven innacurate. Like saying the Bucs were working on a long-term deal with Winston or that if Winston did become a free agent he would generate interest from multiple teams.

So you have anything more then that? Or just one clown whose made multiple false claims already?

  53. JimmyJack Says:

And that is who these people bashing Bruce and the front office are getting their news y’all. Just realize that. Their source for this is Jameis 1of1. That’s it. That’s the only guy saying it and that’s their one and only source.

That’s why these commenters never give any source. Because theirs only one guy peddling it and it’s that 1of1 guy. And they won’t say where they get their info because they know it has none credibility.

  54. Bucsfan951 Says:

    Lamarcus,

Serious question, how did the Bucs do jw wrong? What exactly did they do to “do him wrong?”

He wasn’t under contract anymore. It seems as if he was their 3rd option behind Brady and teddy.

I’m trying for the life of me to figure out how the Bucs did him wrong. I hear that being thrown around a lot and it baffles me.

Again, not beating a dead horse but he isn’t signed and there still is the draft and other qbs still not signed (cam, flacco). If he was such a great qb, why hasn’t anyone signed him yet?

And please people, don’t tell me the Tampa/national media has anything to do with this. He isn’t a cancer or locker room problem (at least it hasn’t been reported that way). No offense to the Tampa media, but they don’t have that much “pull” lol

Don’t even get me started on that Jameis 1 of 1 guy. I can’t even begin to say what I want to say about that dude bc this post you’re reading couldn’t get posted. That dude is a self centered a hole who has a real narcissistic problem with himself. He thinks he’s a bigger deal than what he is.

Best seller my arse! I bet he sold perhaps 1500-2000 books and I doubt that many were sold! Of course i got blocked by him tho haha

  58. lambchop Says:

Is Tom Brady seriously trademarking Tompa Bay and Tampa Brady? Jeez, please don’t spoil the narrative of the greatest QB coming to the Bucs with these cheap trademarks.

  59. JimmyJack Says:

951……Make no mistake.1of1 is the actual source these people are using to trash Bruce Arians. He is the only one saying Bruce mistreated Winston.

They can correct me if I’m wrong but I doubt that’s coming. If their actually was a credible source they’d of spit it out already….This 1of1 guy is a glorified entertainer. It’s laughable that’s where this narritive comes from.

  60. Adrnagy Says:

Tom Brady Needs to win a Sb here to be considered the best. Peyton Manning currently is the goat.

To win SB with different teams. Different coaches ,players. He’s the only QB to do it. Other HOF have try and fail.

I’m not too sure Brady will be able to try this year. Sad. Looks like the front office just threw away millions.

  61. Bucsfan951 Says:

    Mr chop,

With all of respect, I don’t care if he trademarks “bucsfan951 is the biggest a-hole d bag to ever walk this earth!” As long as he wins, he can do what ever he darn well wants to do lol

But if I had to pick one, I’m more of a tompa bay guy, myself.

  62. Adrnagy Says:

  63. Joe Says:

    Bird:

Once again, Joe has much better things to do than to take the time delete comments for some alleged personal vendetta.

If someone’s comments are in moderation it means a couple of things:

    1. They deserved it with repeated steps across the line aka “Crimes Against Joe.”

    2. The spam software has detected something weird in the comment (bizarre abbreviations or several links is a good bet). Joe does not write computer code so sometimes the spam filter works in mysterious ways that not even Joe has a clue about (see below).

Of course Joe reserves the right to delete and/or edit comments because Joe is responsible for each and every word typed on this site.

Quite literally Joe has to fish comments out of moderation All. Day. Long. From 5 a.m. until after midnight. And that is no exaggeration. Joe is guessing he spend an hour minimum every day — every day! — fishing comments out of moderation. That time could be spent to so much better use researching, writing or selling sponsorships.

Unless someone has earned it, there is no personal vendetta or aim to delete comments. Can promise you Joe doesn’t get up in the morning and say to himself, “Who can I ‘eff with today by toying with their comments?” Have much better things to do.

  64. Joe Says:

Brett favre after packers = failure In what way?
Joe Montana after 49ers = failure In what way?
Kurt Warner after rams = failure In what way?
Warren moon after oilers = failure In what way?
Ken stabler after raiders = failure Not sure Joe would call his career after Raiders “failure.”
Joe Namath after jets = failure True. He was a shell of his former self.

Now if you classify “failure” as not winning a Super Bowl, OK. — Joe

  65. Bucsfan951 Says:

    JJ,

Yeah I just have to laugh at the Jameis 1 of 1 guy. Just a loud mouth with zero credibility (in my eyes). Constantly puts down the media as if he’s some sort of “media slayer.” I’ve went back n forth with dude and ended up getting blocked. Again, I’m trying to purge myself of such ppl on Twitter. I’ve unfollowed so many ppl last night who are still hung up on the Jameis thing. The majority of them were ragging on carr for his comments.

I’m just tired of hearing it already… LET IT GO!!!

What else would you play for?

  68. Adrnagy Says:

The only one to do it is the goat. The sheriff. Peyton Manning.

  69. SteveK Says:

    Ndog Says:
    April 10th, 2020 at 3:28 pm
Oh yeah now we have liars and backstabbers running the team that how it changed my bad.
    __________________

@Ndog – am asking from sincere desire of hopefully gaining some insider knowledge. I hoped JW would be Bucs QB in 2020 and disappointed in Bucs decision to cast off JW.

When you say “liars and backstabbers”, can you expand on that? Who -BA/JL? BL?

What I am inferring from your statement, is that “they” told JW during 2019 season to “sling it” to win and they “had his back” since he was learning new offense, and just try to WIN the games, period.

Solid progression during middle part of season. When the last two games ended in losses with INTs, albeit with JW playing on bad knee/thumb/2nd string receivers…..losing those games and especially pick 6 on last throw vs ATL and finishing with losing record…..”they” changed their mindset, and reneged on promise. And made JW the scapegoat for 7-9 season vs 9-7 season with Glazers? is this the correct context?

FWIW – after JW played the final few games that had Zero playoff potential, and with thumb/knee injuries > either JW got bad advice from his agent or stubbornly chose to play. Or BA and team asked JW to suit up knowing he was injured and playing at 60% capacity in hopes of finishing w/a winning record – who knows?

Had JW sat out last 3 games with his injuries, he likely would be finalizing a new deal w Bucs.

Relationship tree went south after end of season. If you @Ndog can share any insider knowledge, would love that insight.

  71. Ndog Says:

Basically he was told that he was coming back and trusted them and played hurt for his team. Then they flipped on him the second they got word they might be able to get Brady. Then ripped him in public as much as possible to devalue him in case Brady didn’t come. That is in a nutshell and I’ve heard that from multiple places.

  72. Tampabuscsbro Says:

    @Ndog

    Do you have any proof?

  73. Ndog Says:

Of course Tampabuscsbro I’ll send it right over.

  74. Ndog Says:

But seriously do you remember Ian Rapport reporting the Bucs were bringing him back after the Lions game? Put it this way do you think he was making that up?

  75. ©MadMax Says:

I think JW was in contention for being brought back but then he jit the bed in those last 2 games…..what was it 7 ints? And then quite a few that were right there for the other team to catch but they didnt.

  76. ©MadMax Says:

Then claimed he was ballin? ROFL, that one sealed the deal for me.

I cant wait to see a true baller, TB12 will be ‘ballin’

  77. Ndog Says:

And if not @madmax and we just brought in a washed up has been, then what? Back to nothing at QB, great plan banking on something THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE.

General Manager of the New England Patriots And head coach 1 team.

Ndog Rapaport never said “the buccaneers told Jameis Winston he is being brought back”

We were told “the buccaneers are expected to bring back Jameis Winston”

essentially in the bucs front office it seemed like after the Lions game that winston would be brought back. Plans change which they did. This is NOT DOING JAMEIS WINSTON DIRTY. Everything past that is nothing but unfounded speculation.

@NDOG THANK YOU for your insights. Much appreciated!!!

I get why any team would go distance to land a 6X SB winning QB.

For me? 43 yr old short-term QB? Only if I am a short-term head coach. BOOM!

JW played hurt w/understanding he was the future QB. After “BA” knew he was landing Brady, BA went out of his way to publicly devalue JW to cover his self-proclaimed QB Whisperer reputation. BA knew long before the FA legal period that he had Brady, and BA had to set the public stage devaluing JW to justify casting off the Bucs #1 QB draft pick.

    CYA, BA! I am not a buyer….

🥱🥱🥱BA smart he ain’t walking the plank for Winston and why should he.
Dirk told us all he’s no dummy Winston is a coach killer.
Did you see how many QBs got signed before Winston you guys are grasping for anything but the film doesn’t lie. Let me ask you all a serious question when does the excuses stop???? Let’s say he gets signed and flops again you goons blame everything on everyone else again?????? When does Winston deserve to be held accountable in your eyes?????

Not blaming anyone or making excuses. 2020 will be a big reveal for all of us. We have to wait.

  87. ©MadMax Says:

Again, as many have stated, why isnt JW signed if he’s still playing like a #1 overall? It doesnt matter what argument you throw out, JW is NOT being sought after!!! And dont give me this BA ruined his rep crap….like many other NFL guys running organizations cant think for themselves or watch the tape for themselves! He might get a job as a backup somewhere after the draft but thats about it!

Haha now we’re going off of a tweet from a guy on twitter?

Now I’ve heard it all! Geez, the stuff that comes out of some peoples mouths just make me lol and shake my head. How they survive in life simply amazes me!

I seriously can’t stop laughing that someone is using a tweet from Ian freaking rapoport as a defense! Too funny

  92. Jeffbuc Says:

Ndog we had to move on from Winston. And with signing Brady to a two year contract and draft a guy to sit and learn fro two years and then have him start for two years on a team friendly contract. That sounds like a lot better plan then letting your man crush get another 4 seasons at double the salary he already had in hopes he got better. Or not signing Brady and drafting a QBs at 14 to be day 1 starter. So you really think the better plan for the bucs was to put all our eggs in the jameis Winston basket and hope each year this is the year he quits throwing interceptions and holding the ball way to long to let something try and develop down field instead of taking the 5 yard open pass. That usually leads to a sack, interception,or incomplete pass. When it should have been an easy 5 yard completion with the chance the receiver could break a tackle and make a big play. No thank you 5 years was enough for any rational person to make a decision on what we had with Winston.

  93. Jeffbuc Says:

Ardnagy you my friend are a liar with your stats. Tom Brady has thrown for more than 30 tds only once. No try seven times and his career average per season is 30.33. He has a QBs rating over 90 only three times you say. He has had seven years over 100 and 13 over 90 with a careee passer rating of 97. And completion percentage over 65 you say Brady only once he has done that 7 times with a career percentage at 63.7. So where did you get your stats
