Jake Arians Mocks RT To Dad’s Team

April 16th, 2020

Like son like father?

Feel free to place however much value in this that you choose.

In a mock draft that Jake Arians, son of Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians, participated in with the gang over at TheDraftNetwork, Arians selected for the Bucs — naturally.

So when the Tampa Bay came up at No. 14, who did Arians go with?

Georgia tackle Andrew Thomas.

14.TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: ANDREW THOMAS, OT, GEORGIA

The Buccaneers have had a pretty amazing offseason so far and don’t have a lot of holes to fill but right tackle remains one of them. Andrew Thomas is a plug-and-play starter on the right side of the line and will have to step up fast; protecting Tom Brady is his new job.

It is hardly novel that someone would mock an offensive tackle to the Bucs at No. 14. Hell, Joe can do that.

But what makes this interesting is the guy who made this selection.

Joe is just going to guess the guy had an adult beverage or two with a guy who will have a significant voice on who the Bucs select at No. 14., And they likely broke down the top players in great deal to the guy in this mock draft.

Sometimes, it is not what you know, but who you know.

Itz all the same dis-information. The Bucs are taking Antoine Winfield Jr at 14

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The perfect “smokescreen” ……….inside source, family source.

  3. ©MadMax Says:

I dont know….Im seeing Wirfs fall down past us in a few mocks. If its between Wirfs and Thomas at 14, im going with Wirfs. Theres your future all pro RG, Cappa to back him up. Then grab a RT in the 3rd, Bartch or Peart.

When I wanted V, I said the big fastest strongest ones are a no miss, and look how he’s turned out for us. Remember wanting Quenton Nelson? Well, heres the other guy, just on the other side of the line….and if we can get him at 14, boom!

  4. Bucsfanman Says:

Building the trenches is a no-brainer.

  5. Sarasota Garey Says:

Realistically what would be the best case scenario for the Bucs in the draft? I believe it would be to get a starting tackle, after trading back for an additional second or third rd pick

  6. Defense Rules Says:

Mock drafts may be fun, but at best they only give you a little insight into which player(s) a certain team MIGHT select IF everyone who picks in front of them does what the mocker predicts. The farther away from Rnd 1 you get, the more IFFY it becomes obviously.

What is valuable is insight into what a team’s PRIORITIES should be. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that our Bucs have TWO glaring holes on the offensive side of the ball right now: RT & RB. We COULD fill 1 or both with FAs, but odds are that we would’ve already done that if we were leaning that way. It’d leave us with almost no salary Cap $$$ in the kitty, so odds are we’ll use our top draft picks to fill the RT & RB holes in our starting lineup.

But we also have a couple of significant holes on the DEFENSIVE side of the ball: DT & DE. We lost DT Allen & DE Nassib and haven’t replaced EITHER … yet. Neither was a starter, but they were (collectively) key rotational players. Nelson isn’t a replacement for either of them IMO since he was on the team last year (he’ll most likely get a lot more snaps however). So odds are that we’ll replace at least 1 of those 2 in the draft, as yet another PRIORITY.

Logically Bucs will pick a RT, RB and DT/DE in the Top-3 Rnds … order based on BPA in those positions when we select. WILL we do that? Heaven only knows. But in the meantime everyone and his brother (or son) will offer up predictions. Hurry up draft.

  7. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Serious doubt one of the four OT drop down to # 14. I see Bucs drafting the DT Javon Kinlaw or trading down for an extra pick. There are plenty of good RT in the second round.

  8. Bucs Guy Says:

OK Tampabaybucfan, if this is a smokescreen, who’s the pick? I would prefer an OT, but I’m OK with Brown or Kinlaw at DT. Definately not a WR or RB at #14 and certainly not Love. He has bust written all over him.

  9. Bucs Guy Says:

If the Bucs don’t get one of the big 4 OTs, pick Josh Jones or trade back. Along with trading OJ, it would be fantastic if the Bucs could end up with 5 picks in the first 3 rounds. There’s a lot of good talent in the top 3 rounds at RB, S, DT, G/C and DE. Get a WR on day 3.

  10. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bucs have 6 picks as of now.
5 of the picks will surely be 2 OLinemen, (Unless they re-sign 1 of their FA’s on the cheap), 1 or 2 D Linemen, RB, and Safety.
Chances of drafting TE, QB or LB are slim.
A surprise FA signing or 2 is probable.

  11. Alanbucsfan Says:

^ I forgot Bucs have an extra 4th round pick, so they have 7 picks.

  12. Gobucs Says:

If you really want to build the trenches go thomas in first and grab Isaiah Wilson in the 2nd. Who I believe will be a future right guard. Cappa will be a fine backup. Then Akers in the third !

  13. 1sparkybuc Says:

I love the optimism that there will even be games played this fall. Are the new stadiums in LA and Vegas even done? Restrictions on crowds could still be an issue everywhere, but it’s already being discussed in California. If the season is cancelled, we not only have no SB, but we have a 44 year old QB with a guaranteed contract who hasn’t played in two years. Would a return of Jameis Winston then be our best option? Would Arians even want to coach again? Who gets paid what if the season is cancelled? The draft is really a minor consideration right now. The games can be televised in empty stadiums, but it’s impossible to keep the players and staff safe. Life in America is in for a new normal. The “good old days” are just months in the past. We have a new perspective about who or what is really important in our lives.

  14. Alanbucsfan Says:

    1Sparkybuc-

I am optimistic that the American people will wake up and realize that this self-imposed economic suicide is based on Fascist Governors making decisions which are based not only on flawed models and assumptions, but which violate the US Constitution .

LOL…that pick is ALL over the internet….I had a brilliant draft idea as I was falling asleep last night but can’t remember it this morning….

dont forget after the draft there will be some interesting players that are cut…… happens every year .

  18. PSL Bob Says:

Many of the mock drafts have Thomas going to the Bucs at #14, so Arians’ pick is not surprising.

@Gobucs….That would be a home run draft

    kinlaw-1st round
    isaiah wilson-2nd round

    I. Wilson is a plug and play RT….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  21. gotbbucs Says:

There’s alot of high draft pick offensive tackles that bust, don’t kid yourselves and think that just because it’s an offensive lineman that it’s a safe pick.
If the choice ends up being between the fourth best offensive tackle(Thomas) and the first or second best defensive tackle(Kinlaw), I’m taking the defensive tackle. Pick #14 is too high to be settling for the ugly friend, it’s too early in the night for that.

You also have to remember that this is a GM that was a former offensive lineman that prides himself on finding diamonds in the rough beyond the 1st round.

  22. SufferingSince76 Says:

Now Danny Dimes aka DantheTanMan is commentating as 1Sparkybuc!

Get the best available RT at 14. Please do not trade any picks now or in the future to move up.

  23. Admiral Redbeard Says:

Trade back, get another pick or two, and draft Isaiah Wilson. A true R-OT that can start on day 1. That extra pick can be used to get someone like Bartch or Hunt, who can backup at OT or G with a chance to be a starter in the future. Leki Fotu or Davon Hamilton are prototypical 3-4 DL’s, and that is who we should be targeting to backup our already stout D-line while they are groomed to take over in a year or two.

  24. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Defense

I agree. But what about FS and SS? I personally am not satisfied with who we have starting and our depth is pretty weak. I would think if there is a possible starting safety available in round 3 we could be pulling the trigger on that guy.

    Then WR in round 4.

  25. TheBradyBunch Says:

Sparky, even if there isn’t football this season the draft is still happening this year and those players taken will be with the team when football is eventually played again. The players they take a week from now will be important selections for the team at some point. It is not optimism to speculate who the draft choices will be for a draft that is happening. SMH!

  26. TheBradyBunch Says:

I would say that is especially true too given the fact that if there is no college football next year it will be extremely difficult to figure out who to draft in 2021. I mean if Joe Burrow had not played this past season he probably would be looking at a 4th or 5th round selection. I would say that makes this upcoming draft very important as they have more film on these guys coming out vs what they may end up having next year.

  27. 1sparkybuc Says:

I respect people in general, and leaders in particular, who place a higher value on lives than they do on $$$$. Describing a leader who shares that opinion as a fascist reveals a profound misunderstanding of the definition of the word. My questions about the future of the NFL in general, and the Bucs in particular, are legitimate. Alan, you’ve got to look at the bright side. Killing off half the people over 65 will save billions of dollars in Social Security and Medicare costs. My guess is the fifth best OT in the draft will be just fine.

  28. DBS Says:

And we have people thinking this only hits the elderly. Why don’t you go volunteer at a hospital.

  29. TheBradyBunch Says:

Sparky you have to ignore the guys like Alan. What is scary there a lot of people out there (definitely the minority but still a lot) who are as ignorant as him. My guess is that he turns to Fox News, Breitbart and maybe some InfoWars as his trusted news sources. People like him are what makes getting rid of this virus ASAP so difficult. There were protestors yesterday in MI gathered in close groups with no masks spouting the same type of stuff.

  30. Alanbucsfan Says:

    1Sparkybuc-
Thank God your thinking wasn’t around during WWIi or the Allies wouldn’t have invaded Europe because it wasn’t Safe enough.

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @1Sparky and Bradybunch

Agree with both of you and I tend to ignore RWNJ’s who as you say have specious info behind their opinions.

And Sparky even if we get through this with a few deaths as possible we have ALREADY save a TON of money.

Nursing homes…5 years ago..last time I shopped for a mother in law…were 6,000 a month! The VAST MAJORITY of seniors in nursing homes are paid for by the Gov’t.

This virus has ALREADY eliminated thousands who lived in homes.

I could criticize Gov DeSantis for a lot but he does have a great idea in sending in National Guard as special reserves in our health care force who will simply go in and start testing residents and workers in our nursing homes. This is borderline catastrophic for the residents and their FAMILIES!! No transparency.

And the workers in these homes expose themselves and their families every night when they return home. Where is the freaking compassion?

Do RWNJ’s have some place they go to get their feelings anesthetized and their humanity surgically removed?

  32. Alanbucsfan Says:

    BradyBunch-
Poverty, Depression, Despair – these can become a pandemic as well.

  33. Alanbucsfan Says:

    St Pete-
I would expect better from you than following the classic Liberal playbook of condescending labeling of anyone you disagree with.

Alot of people are losing their life’s investment in businesses and careers because of this shutdown.

  34. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Alanbucsfan

“Alot of people are losing their life’s investment in businesses and careers because of this shutdown.”

As opposed to losing their LIVES!! Their mothers and fathers! Children!

And you have presented a false choice! It’s not either or. Of course I feel sorry for people losing businesses they’ve spent a lifetime building. I have been a small businessman. In retirement one of my wife and I’s major investment is a rental duplex. We’ already been told by our management company to prepare for missed rent payments. I responded that’s OK…fortunately we do not have a mortgage on the property so we can be very generous with our tenants.

I feel for them as well. For us it’ll mean a significant tightening of our belts but not losing the property since there’s no mortgage.

$$$ lost get my sympathy and empathy but nowhere NEAR the tragedy of families losing lives. I saw a story on a family in New Orleans that has lost FOUR family members in the past ten days!

  35. stpetebucsfan Says:

    BTW Alan

I once read a great description of the difference between liberals and conservatives.

If a social problem…healthcare…hunger etc…requires $9 a person to fix the liberals will vote $10 the conservative $8.

IMO I vote the $10 and then work like hell to find that dollar waste and correct it.

  37. Alanbucsfan Says:

    St Pete-
I agree with you- it’s not either/ or.

My point is , let the government give guidelines for dealing with this (which they have) and support for the hospitals, medical professionals, etc

Let businesses decide whether they want to stay open and let people decide if they want to quarantine or not.

The original intent of the shutdown was to give time for medical community to be ready for an onslaught of patients.
Well, the projections and assumptions have been vastly overestimated-

I trust American people to use their own judgment a helluvalot more than I trust Government officials- who, by the way, are not losing their jobs or paychecks.

  38. QUE589 Says:

Licht will surprise everyone and draft CJ Henderson. Nickel is now a base package in the NFL. Have to upgrade pass defense and CJ will be best available DB on the board at 14. Davis, SMB & CJ would give Bucs a young dynamic DB core.

  39. 1sparkybuc Says:

Even with the directive to maintain a safe distance and cover faces you have idiots deliberately going against it. That’s fine if they are only contaminating each other, but they’re not. They are infecting anyone and everyone they come in contact with. There are people who don’t show any symptoms that transmit the virus. Just so you know, I volunteered and served my full enlistment during the Vietnam era. It was a different war. All of the enemies were on one side. This war has enemies in leadership positions in our government and walking around on the streets of America. No AK-47s or surface to air missiles involved, but people are dying just the same. The death toll for this will be much more than the lives we lost in Vietnam. The economy will recover eventually. There is no recovery from death.

  40. bucsfaninoregon Says:

Well, I declare! An actual discussion of the possibility of NO football in 2020. Alan, you really think this is a liberal plot to castrate the cream of American youth, why not volunteer at a hospital or nursery home? The quicker it is over the better it will be for the Dear Leader and his agenda.
I’m interested how old you are. I’m old enough to be rooting for the Bucs since ’78. I am facing the next 1-2 years in virtual isolation. Does that make me a stupid, fearful snowflake? What does a macho man like you think?

  41. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … I agree wholeheartedly with you about needing a Safety and a #3 WR. I really like Mike Edwards as a pick last year, but I still see him more as a ‘hybrid’ CB/Safety for specific situations as opposed to being a pure Safety. But IMO our Secondary doesn’t need another rookie back there. I’ve commented often that I feel it’s critical that the Bucs sign a quality veteran Safety to start opposite Whitehead.

I’ve also commented that of all the Safeties on the market, Tony Jefferson would be my choice (he’s still available). He’s 5’11” and 211 lbs and played for Arizona from 2013-2016 so he knows TB’s system. He then moved on to Baltimore where he started for 2 years (2017-2018) and then got hurt in Game 5 last year (started all those 5 games) & went onto IR for the rest of the season. In those 5 games last season he was targeted 14 times & the opposition completed 8 of those … respectable defense IMO. I think we could sign him for $4-$5 mil and we have enough salary Cap room to do that.

Agree with you about using a Rnd 4 pick on a #3 WR. This is supposed to be a deep WR draft, so finding a potential #3 WR should be doable in Rnd 4. I still would really like to see us draft AJ Dillon as a RB/FB. Just a gut feeling, but I think his size & skillset will translate very very well at the NFL level.

  44. Cassidysid Says:

Every team wants to trade down. I see it every year on here about trading down to get x amount of picks. I don’t predict trade downs cause it just to difficult to figure out how far and what we get in return.

I believe they will go RT even though I feel like DE to replace SUH or add a Safety is more important. I’m not a fan of drafting a RT unless that rookie will be taking over the LT position at some point in the future. And so far it looks like Smith is going to be our LT for the next few years.
